West Nile Virus
According to federal health officials the current West Nile Virus outbreak is one of the largest in the U.S., with four times the usual number of cases for this time of year. The CDC has much more to say on this here: CDC on West Nile Virus 2012
The best way to prevent West Nile disease is to avoid mosquito bites. Insect repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants are some of the recommended strategies. Also, empty standing water from buckets and other places to discourage breeding.
