PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Two construction workers were killed Wednesday morning when the lift truck they were in toppled over.

The scissor lift was extended about 2 to 3 stories high and investigators believe it may have toppled over after being parked on a slope.

Lt. Brandon Jones with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said that the two men were contractors who were painting the side of a building.

"The inmates out in the rec yard actually saw this take place... they were able to see this and what they said two people just jumped off the roof. So to them it looked somebody jumping from the roof when in fact they were attached to this device and this device fell over" said Lt. Jones.

Paramedics responded and took both men to St Joseph's Hospital but medical staff were unable to save both men.

The names of the men are not being released by authorities, both men worked for Riddell Painting Company.
