Indoor, outdoor fun remain available in Northern Illinois as some venues shutter for cold season amid pandemic – Northwest Herald

    - October 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even with cold weather approaching and some businesses such as Regal movie theaters shutting down indefinitely while COVID-19 inhibits the appeal of being indoors, Northern Illinois residents still have options to get out of the house for arts, entertainment and recreation.

Operators of destinations such as cinemas and family centers are getting creative and staying open, featuring bowling, laser tag and miniature golf as they prepare for temperatures to drop, in hopes of drawing customers to what they believe are safe indoor environments.

Meanwhile, senior centers are continuing to welcome ideas for virtual events and outdoor, in-person get-togethers for limited numbers of participants at a time. And cultural facilities and downtown business organizations are extending into November seasonal attractions that have proven popular during this strange year.

Mayor Wayne Jett, co-owner of the McHenry Downtown Indoor Theater, said the business is changing directions to offer more than just film showings. He said one of its theaters is being remodeled to include a 20-foot-by-12-foot stage that will remain even after the outbreak is under control, with the right lighting and sound to host live acts such as stand-up comedy, magic shows and plays with small casts.

Comedians Jim Florentine and Kevin Farley are set to come to the revamped theater for two shows each the nights of Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, respectively, with tickets available online at bit.ly/3nGGfOa.

In downtown DeKalb, the Egyptian Theatre has succeeded in showing off its $6.5 million expansion by increasing the frequency of its haunted tours, normally offered only once a month or every other month, said Jeanine Holcomb, marketing and communications director for the theater. They are now available on all Friday nights through the end of the month and into November, she said.

Tickets for those tours are almost sold out, with only one remaining for Oct. 16, and limited availability for the theaters high octane haunted tour on Halloween night, which will feature a special paranormal medium tour guide, Holcomb said. At least two more tours are going to be offered in November, which is unusual for the theater, Holcomb said.

We felt like it would be the logical choice to keep offering them. People keep buying them, she said.

It is also showing classic horror movies Saturday and Sunday nights in its 1,400-seat theater that allows adequate social distancing, as well as a production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show Oct. 30 that will scale back how close cast members get to the audience, Holcomb said.

We cant wait until COVID has passed and we can have a large party and show people the new digs, she said. Until then, were glad to continue having people in small groups.

In Aurora, downtown storefronts along the Fox River are decorated by local artists with colorful skulls as part of the celebration of Mexican heritage for the Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, that the organization Aurora Downtown has helped put on, its manager Marissa Amoni said. The area will be known as Sugar Skull City from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15 for people to take self-guided tours, and the month will include a virtual how-to class on making your own sugar skulls, according to the Aurora Downtown website.

We have a very large downtown, so things are separated, and people dont congregate necessarily along one street. Were using that to our advantage, and weve come up with crowd-free activities, which include scavenger hunts, Amoni said. We are inviting people to downtown to experience authentic Mexican culture by visiting Mexican bakeries, restaurants and seeing decorated storefronts. Dozens of businesses have hired local artists to decorate their storefronts for Day of the Dead heritage.

Agritourism operators in Northern Illinois offering visitors the chance to navigate corn mazes, pick pumpkins and enjoy other harvest season fun on the farm are expecting to have a big year as the heightened risk of indoor virus spread gives outdoor activities more appeal, the Northwest Herald reported last month.

For Selmis Greenhouse, Farm and Pumpkin Patch in Rock Falls, whose corn maze this year is in the shape of a decorated skull when seen from above in honor of Day of the Dead, the weekends have indeed been busy, farmhand Ava Prior said.

The pandemic and the limited options for having fun away from home this year may have brought some first-timers to the farm this season, even as certain attractions, such as its haunted house and jump houses, are closed this year because of the outbreak, Prior said.

Id say we have had a lot of new faces here for sure, Prior said.

Residents and tourists looking for a bit of friendly competition can test their skills at bowling, miniature golf, arcade games or laser tag at Plum Hollow Family Center in Dixon, which has been open since late June and is limiting groups to fewer than 25 customers, with empty lanes between parties.

Plum Hollows bar is shut down, but food and beverage service is still available at tables.

In comparison to being closed, its much better, Plum Hollow owner Al Norman said. We make our money on the large groups. Its that window, historically December through March, where we need to be able to have big numbers of people in the building. But for right now, its keeping people on payroll, its keeping the lights going. Were not losing money.

Senior citizens, who are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19 than younger populations, still have options to get out of the house and gather together in small numbers, or online.

McHenry Township Senior Center is unable to host programming in its facility still, activity director Jane Gregory said. However, she has found some seniors enjoy the knitting and crocheting classes she has been able to offer in a park shelter near the center, and games such as hangman played over video chat, including a round Gregory led Thursday, have been a hit, too, she said.

We play pokeno on Mondays, bingo on Wednesdays and exercise (via Zoom) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Gregory said.

She is also open to suggestions from community members on virtual or in-person events to offer to small numbers of participants.

We are planning on being outside and doing activity even into next month if we can, she said, adding that seniors can access a shelter with a fireplace that can accommodate up to six people with social distancing in place.

Believe it or not: Artificial coloring could be used to disinfect the air from COVID-19 – Entrepreneur

A biomedical engineering laboratory in the US has developed a way to potentially neutralize airborne viruses using food coloring sprays.

Editor's Note: This research report is a brief overview of interesting academic work.

By Young Kim , Purdue University ; Hee-Jae Jeon , Purdue University ; Jung Woo Leem , Purdue University , and Yuhyun Ji , Purdue University

Our Biomedical Engineering laboratory has developed a way to potentially neutralize airborne viruses using food coloring sprays approved by the FDA, the US health agency. Aerosols are small pieces of solid or liquid matter suspended in the air.

Our idea was inspired by photodynamic therapy , which is a medical treatment, even for certain types of cancer. Photodynamic therapy uses a photosensitizer, a chemical that reacts with oxygen in the presence of light to produce free oxygen radicals . These radicals are highly reactive, meaning that they trigger other chemical reactions, including those that kill harmful pathogens.

Instead of using expensive medical photosensitizers, we have identified several FDA-approved food dyes that can be used to generate free radicals in visible light. We use ultrasound to generate tiny sprays that contain the food coloring so the dyes can float and stay in the air. Sprays are barely visible and their small size and short shelf life mean they don't stain surfaces.

We use this technique to produce a device, Photodynamic Airborne Cleaner, that disinfects airborne pathogens. To the best of our knowledge and belief, this is the first photodynamic therapy aerosol generator for airborne disinfection.

Viruses and bacteria are often transmitted through the air. A person infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, who coughs or sneezes produces contaminated droplets and aerosols that float in the air and can trigger the disease .

Due to this risk, all types of indoor meetings are now limited. Being able to disinfect large volumes of indoor air where there are many people is essential to reduce the chances of transmission.

Photodynamic therapy was first demonstrated as a means of fighting bacterial infections . Oxygen free radicals, specifically singlet oxygen , can also inactivate viruses by damaging the nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids that make them up. In particular, singlet oxygen is effective in breaking down the lipid envelopes that form protective layers around many viruses. Most viruses that are harmful to humans, including SARS-CoV-2, have these envelopes.

Various other disinfection techniques are available, for example hydrogen peroxide spray, hydrogen peroxide vapor, ozone, steam, and UV-C or 'deep UV' lighting. However, these are more appropriate for disinfecting surfaces than for disabling airborne pathogens. Additionally, they can be dangerous to humans. For example, deep ultraviolet rays are commonly used as a disinfectant, but they are carcinogenic.

We are preparing to collaborate with a federal research team to evaluate the effectiveness of our airborne photodynamic cleaner against airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

FDA approved food coloring sprays and their singlet oxygen generation do not last long. These dye sprays degrade in light and singlet oxygen is not generated without light. However, although the food coloring is approved by the FDA for consumption, it is necessary to test the safety of possible inhalation and oral intake.

How Light Therapy Quickly Cured My Seasonal Affective Disorder – British Vogue

    - October 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Every autumn its the same. My sprightly post-summer mood evaporates, and a rather stubborn cloud of despair appears in its place. Ah, hello again, seasonal affective disorder.

Seasonal affective disorder, often referred to using the painfully apt acronym SAD, affects one in three people in the UK, and statistics indicate that women are 40 per cent more likely to suffer with it. Whether its a mild case of winter blues or spirals into full-blown depression, it comes with a raft of symptoms ranging from a lack of energy and changes to appetite and sleeping patterns, to feeling sad, tearful or hopeless. When its really serious, SAD can lead to suicidal thoughts, for which professional help should always be sought.

The Lumie Vitamin L SAD Lamp.

For me, it manifests as lethargy, an uptick in hunger (at all times), and the sort of sadness and sporadic crying fits that I just dont experience the rest of the year. I am lucky that it isnt worse, but especially last year, it started to impact my daily life. Luckily, my job at Vogue involves researching all manner of maladies and wellness trends, which led me to come across light therapy, and subsequently the Lumie Vitamin L SAD Lamp.

Since SAD is linked to the fact we are less exposed to sunlight within the winter months cue a disruption to our circadian rhythms and a lack of happy-making serotonin one way of treating it is with artificial light (or light therapy). SAD lamps essentially beam a very bright light into our cells, prompting them to react as though it is real sunlight theyre absorbing, which can help ease symptoms. Its not just any old light sitting in front of the Anglepoise on your desk sadly wont cut it rather, 10,000 lux of cool-white fluorescent light with 20 times the power of ordinary indoor lighting.

All you have to do is sit between 16 and 50cm from the lamp, eyes forward and directly in front of it, for at least 20 minutes each day morning is best. I now do this each morning while putting my make-up on. If nothing else, its an excellent light in which to apply foundation, but be religious with it and according to the Seasonal Affective Disorder Association it will help dispel a low mood in 85 per cent of cases.

I can personally vouch for it. Having come across the Lumie lamp slap-bang in the middle of last winter, I saw a marked difference during the second half. I actually felt a little more chipper after day one of using it for 20 minutes first thing, but a week in, I was back. My mood lifted, my energy levels returned to normal, I could (finally) resist the chocolate stash, and most importantly I felt like myself again. It might be the best 75 I ever spent.

Peace by Hampton BR30 smart bulb review – TechHive

    - October 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

If youre looking for a bargain-priced smart floodlight that doesnt require a hub, the new Peace by Hampton BR30 Smart Wi-Fi bulbs might fit the billprovided youre willing to pay for a four-pack.

One of the first three devices in Hampton Productss new Peace by Hampton product line, this easy-to-install BR30 smart bulb connects directly to your Wi-Fi network, and it boasts robust automation tools, along with support for Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri. That said, vacation and sleep/wake-up routines are missing, and while the manufacturer says they can be used indoors or out, theyre not bright enough to qualify as security lighting.

The Peace by Hampton smart line currently includes two lighting products: an A19 multi-color bulband the BR30 multi-color floodlight thats the subject of this review. A Peace by Hampton smart plug (see our review) is also available.

Both the A19 and BR30 bulbs are available exclusively through Best Buy, and at a little more than $16 a bulb, the Peace by Hampton BR30 hovers around the lower end of other color-capable BR30 lights weve tested. But as weve already noted, the Peace by Hampton BR30 bulbs are only sold in four-packs for $65.

Rated to last up to 13.7 years based on about three hours of use per day, the Peace by Hampton BR30 has a standard E26 base and is mainly intended for indoor use (e.g., in a recessed ceiling can), although the bulbs specifications note that it can be used in damp locations, such as under an eave or otherwise protected from direct contact with rain or snow.

When I inquired further, a Hampton Products rep told me that the floodlight and its completely sealed housing could also be used outside where its directly exposed to the elements. Screwing the bulb into an outdoor socket typically reserved for a weatherized Philips Hue BR30 bulb, the Peace by Hampton BR30 survived a week of Brooklyn thunderstorms and appeared ready for more.

Capable of emitting up to 760 lumens of light (a bit shy of a 60-watt incandescent bulb), this BR30 bulb had no problem lighting up my office during an indoor test, but the bulb did look noticeably dimmer outdoors than my 800-lumen Philips Hue B30 smart bulb. If you intend to use the Peace by Hampton BR30 outside, you might want to use it more as mood lighting than for, say, illuminating a dark walkway.

As with the Peace by Hampton A19 bulb, the BR30 floodlights white light can be tuned from a warm 2,700 Kelvin to a cooler 5,000 Kelvin, and it can glow in up to 16 million colors.

Because the Peace by Hampton BR30 bulb can connect directly to Wi-Fi, you wont need a hub to add the floodlight to your home network. All you need to do is download and install the Peace by Hampton mobile app, which can automatically scan for new Peace by Hampton bulbs once youve registered for an account (you cant log in with Google or Facebook, so youll need to enter your email address and create a password). Like most other smart bulbs, the Peace by Hampton BR30 spotlight only connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks, but the bulb managed to connect to my dual-band Wi-Fi router without the need to temporarily disable its 5GHz network.

Once youve added the bulbor bulbs, given that were dealing with a four-packyou can add them to rooms in your home (Living Room, Master Bedroom, Kitchen, and so on), and then start grouping them together or with other Peace by Hampton lights. Oddly, the app doesnt let you control all the lights in a room, but it does let you control every light in a group, so you might (annoyingly) find yourself having to create lights groups that correspond to your rooms in the app.

The Peace by Hampton app lets you tune the bulbs white light, adjust its colors, and change or edit lighting scenes, some of which are animated.

The Peace by Hampton app features a three-tabbed interface that lets you tune the BR30s white light, change colors, or set a lighting scene.

You also get some basic scheduling and some powerful (and potentially intimidating) multi-step automation features, although vacation and sleep/wake-up routines are missing.

As far as smart home integrations go, the Peace by Hampton BR30 bulb supports Alexa and Google Assistant (which means you can ask either Alexa or Google to gradually dim or brighten the light at night or in the morning). The floodlight also lets you export tap-to-run automations as Siri Shortcuts, but theres no full-on HomeKit integration.

Reliable and reasonably priced (but only available in a four-pack), the Peace by Hampton BR30 Smart Wi-Fi bulbs coms with an impressive set of automation tools, plus support for Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri Shortcuts. That said, while these tunable white and color smart bulbs can be used outdoors, we dont think theyre quite bright enough to serve as anything more than mood lighting outside, and were disappointed that the Peace by Hampton app lacks vacation and gradual sleep/wake-up routines.

LED bulb penetration 88% in India: study – ETRealty.com

    - October 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

KOLKATA: Energy efficiency in Indian households has touched 88 per cent with LED bulbs lighting up homes due to affordable government schemes, while more than 75 per cent of air-conditioner users and 60 per cent of refrigerator customers are using star-labelled products, a study said on Wednesday.

However, only 25 per cent of Indian households are aware of the Bureau of Energy Efficiencys star labelling programme, it said.

The study by not-for-profit the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) also found that 77 per cent of grid users are satisfied with their electricity services.

It is the first-ever pan-India survey on the state of energy access, consumption and energy efficiency in Indian homes.

The CEEW study also found that 97 per cent of Indian households were connected to the grid, with another 0.33 per cent exclusively relying on off-grid electricity sources such as solar home systems, solar mini-grids, and battery storage.

An estimated 2.4 per cent of the households in the country remained unelectrified, it said.

"Our focus is now going to be on quality, reliability and consumer satisfaction to increase satisfaction rates from 77 per cent to 90 per cent and even higher," additional power secretary Sanjay Malhotra said in a statement.

"We are setting up a committee to develop a framework to rank the distribution companies. Improving satisfaction rates, and viability and sustainability of discoms is very important. State-run discoms lose almost a rupee per unit sold.. we need to improve the wherewithal of the discoms," he said.

According to the CEEW study, Jharkhand had the lowest share of grid users billed regularly (55 per cent).

An Oakmont pedestrian safety project, inspired by a traffic study and a borough Girl Scout, is planned for next year.

Borough officials earmarked $40,000 in the 2021 budget for line painting for crosswalks along Allegheny River Boulevard and Allegheny Avenue.

It is unclear how much painting could be done with that amount of money.

The decision to improve the crosswalks was done after reviewing a traffic study by Wooster and Associates of Pittsburgh and a report from resident Audrey Myers, a ninth-grader at Riverview High School.

I think she inspired us to move forward on it, and she has given us a wonderful tool to work with, Councilwoman Nancy Ride said. Were able to use it rather than doing our research with our own staff, and we thank her.

Audrey examined about 120 intersections this past spring and noted the quality of the crosswalks and whether there were sidewalk ramps. Audrey also took photos of all of the intersections.

She submitted her data to the borough in March. Officials put that data into an interactive dashboard for Oakmonts geographic information systems a few months later.

According to Audreys report, 53 of the intersections examined had crosswalks while 61 only had sidewalk ramps.

Out of those crosswalks, seven were listed in good condition, 20 in fair condition, 21 were poor and three earned mixed reviews.

Myers is a member of Girl Scout Troop 52359 in Oakmont and Boy Scout Troop 9143 in Monroeville.

Her efforts will go toward her Girl Scouts Silver Award.

The traffic study was released a few months ago. It included an analysis of traffic along Allegheny Avenue, Third Street and Cedar Way from Hulton Road to College Avenue.

The study showed several intersections were dangerous for walkers.

We have a vehicle/pedestrian conflict in a lot of places, borough manager Scot Fodi said. If we did some improvements on signage and paint on the streets wed have a better chance of lessening the conflicts.

Fodi said there were a lot of near misses this year and previous years, but no one was actually struck.

Theres been no pedestrian incidents, he said. The accidents we are seeing at intersections happen to be driver incidents when they make bad judgments. If theres an accident along Third Street and Hulton Road, typically its a driver trying to push the envelope and try to cross when they shouldnt have.

Wooster and Associates officials said most of the study data, such as how many cars travel throughout the borough, would likely be different now due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The crosswalks are expected to eventually look like piano keys and be uniform on the main streets and mid-block intersections.

Fodi said he plans to work with local contractors to find the best paint price. Bids could go out sometime in February.

Diego’s, a husband restaurant to Frida’s, opens tomorrow in University City – St. Louis Magazine

    - October 13, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The day has finally come, quips Natasha Kwan, co-owner of Diegos Mexican restaurant which opens tomorrow, It only took 22 months.

Planning a restaurant, especially retrofitting an exciting one, is never easy because of the unknowns, and there were a lot of them, says Kwan regarding the former Momos Ouzaria Taverna. Our plan was to keep the walk-in and the hood, move the bar, do a little painting, and open the doors. Little did we know there was a disaster behind every wall. Contractors told us it was the top two of the worst projects theyd ever seen. Then in the middle of the prolongation, along came COVID-19.

Opening a restaurant in the middle of the pandemic is risky, to be sure, but Kwan and Roloff were fortunate to be able to open utilizing 50 percent of the seating rather than 25. The look and layout of Diego's will evolve due to furniture and artwork delays, Kwan says, and patio seating and to-go service will become increasingly important. Regardless, she says, the response from pre-opening guests has been more than positive, with echoes of well worth the wait.

Kwan and Roloff own a handful of several businesses in a (west-of-the-Loop) pocket of U City that includes Fridas, a vegetarian caf named after Kwans cat and as an homage to painter Frida Kahlo. She married a fellow painter, Diego Rivera, in 1927, and the name and culinary theme was a natural, says Kwan.

A bright blue, orange, and green color palate matches the one at Museo Frida Kahlo (a.k.a. La Casa Azul), the artists childhood home. Homages to Frida and Diego are both obvious (prints on the wall) and hidden (check the mosaic tile in the window seats and the art on the patio walls). The script in the logo was built off of Diegos signature.

The back bar is festooned with Mexican masks, the bar top has moveable dividers, and the bar face boasts a sea of Day of the Dead-themed tile. Liquor cubbies (where tequila and mezcal are both featured) are splashed with colorful ceramic tile, a theme repeated throughout the three-room cantina.

Espolon is the house tequila and Montelobos supplies the mezcal (we want people to understand and recognize the difference, says Kwan). The former is base for an unconventional margarita, served in a pint glass and made with fresh lime juice, a touch of agave, and splash of orange juiceno Triple Sec or orange liqueur of any kind. The resulting quaff is brighter and thankfully, not cloyingly sweet.

The cocktail list includes a selection of two margaritas on tap, $10 house and classic cocktails, and a flight of tequilas. Except for a $75 top, top shelf margarita, topped with Grand Marnier Cuvee du Centenaire (a blend of XO Cognacs aged up to 25 years combined with the essence of wild tropical oranges), there are no overwrought preparations. No 10-minute cocktails and no two-foot mixing spoons, says Kwan. I would rather my bartenders establish a rapport with the customer than spend that time crafting a cocktail with an egg white that took forever to froth. To me, tending bar is about knowing the customer and getting them a cocktail, fast.

Those speedy cocktails are paired with street food-themed, small plates, featuring seafood and poultry, but no beef or pork. Its more about the seasoning and the sauce, rather than the choice of meat, says Kwan. Favorites are the tacos with grilled barramundi, chicken carnitas (pictured above), and grilled shrimp, served in a flavorful and just-thick-enough single corn shell.

Recommended are the costras, traditionally a cooked disc of cheese that doubles as a surrogate taco tortilla. Here, the cheese is cooked onto the tortilla, and the result, served two ways, is memorable.

Other options include tlayudas (like a thin masa pizza); sheet pan nachos, thoughtfully constructed in a single layer (not a heap); and the attention-grabbing queso flameado (think: Mexican saganaki), an homage to Chuck Paner, the late owner of the former Momos.

Theres a dessert showstopper, too: grilled bananas with strawberries and caramel, dusted with cinnamon and a smidge of cayenne, an adaptation of a dish that intrigued Kwan.

Knowing that tables at Mexican restaurants often get cluttered (chips, salsa water glasses, margaritas, plates, etc.), Kwan opted for more real estate at Diegos, which is all the more dramatic since theyre all made of different, hand-selected stonepink, gray, yellow, and quartzite (Rick and I share a mutual dislike for wooden tabletops, Kwan says).

There are hanging gardens, a copper Mayan calendar, Mexican fishing baskets doubling as pendant lights, and kitschy coconut palm trees. Mexican tiles sweeping the archways cause guests to linger, just for a moment. Arriving soon are works from local artist Kevin Glazer and a print from Espolon, to be set in an 8-by-6 foot frame.

In a nod to the times, Kwan and Roloff have pulled out all the stopsdividers, partitions, air scrubbers, stanchions, single use tableware, table carafes, and bags for masksto keep staffers and diners safe. Despite the current climate, we plan on being here a while and we have other things in the works," Kwan says. "A pandemic wont stop us building the community we have created in U City."
