Security researchers have managed to extract the secret key used by Intel CPUs to encrypt updates and the effects of their discovery could be wide reaching.
With the key in hand, it's now possible to decrypt the microcode updates Intel releases to patch security vulnerabilities and other bugs. This could potentially even allow hackers to release chip updates with their own microcode though they wouldn't be able to survive a system reboot.
Independent researcher Maxim Goryachy along with researchers Dmitry Sklyarov and Mark Ermolov from Positive Technologies made the discovery by leveraging a critical vulnerability Ermolov and Goryachy found in the Intel Management Engine back in 2017.
Goryachy provided further insight on the research team's latest discovery in a direct message to Ars Technica, saying:
At the moment, it is quite difficult to assess the security impact. But in any case, this is the first time in the history of Intel processors when you can execute your microcode inside and analyze the updates.
Three years ago Goryachy and Ermolov discovered a critical vulnerability in the Intel Management Engine, indexed as Intel SA-00086, that allowed them to execute any code they wanted inside the dependent core of Intel's CPUs. While the chip giant released a patch fixing the bug, it could still be exploited as CPUs can be rolled back to an earlier firmware version without the fix.
Earlier this year, the research team was able to use the vulnerability they found to unlock a service mode embedded in Intel chips called Red Unlock which is used by its engineers to debug microcode. Goryachy, Ermolov and Sklyarov then named their tool for accessing the debugger Chip Red Pill in a reference to The Matrix.
By accessing one of Intel's Goldmont-based CPUs in Red Unlock mode, the researchers were able to extract a special ROM area called MSROM (microcode sequencer ROM). They then reverse engineered the chip maker's microcode and following months of analysis, were able to extract the RC4 key used by Intel in the update process. However, the researchers were not able to discover the signing key used by Intel to cryptographically prove whether an update is authentic or not.
In a statement, Intel officials downplayed the team's discovery while reassuring users that their CPUs are safe from potentially malicious chip updates, saying:
The issue described does not represent security exposure to customers, and we do not rely on obfuscation of information behind red unlock as a security measure. In addition to the INTEL-SA-00086 mitigation, OEMs following Intels manufacturing guidance have mitigated the OEM specific unlock capabilities required for this research. The private key used to authenticate microcode does not reside in the silicon, and an attacker cannot load an unauthenticated patch on a remote system.
Goryachy, Ermolov and Sklyarov's discovery may not be able to be used by hackers but for security researchers it could be a real help as they'll now be able to analyze Intel's microcode patches to see how the company fixes bugs and security vulnerabilities.

Human Rights First has received previously undisclosed records that reveal how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been carrying out illegal expulsions of asylum seekers and children.
Since March 2020, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at ports of entry and Border Patrol agents have blocked thousands of asylum seekers and unaccompanied children from requesting humanitarian protection at the border and summarily expelled them from the United Statesin violation of U.S. refugee and anti-trafficking laws and treaty obligations. In so doing, DHS has used as a pretext an order from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on COVID-19issued over objections of senior CDC officials and pursuant to instructions by Trump administration officials.
A group of leading epidemiologists and public health experts wrote that the order, which was indefinitely extended on May 19 and re-issued with minor modifications on October 13, relies on specious arguments, including false claims about CBP capacity to process asylum seekers, and fails to further public health and disregards alternative measures that can protect public health while preserving access to asylum and other protection.
The documentswhich we received from DHS via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requestdetail the highly concerning practices that have led to illegal expulsions, including:
A highly and intentionally flawed screening process
Forced returns of pregnant asylum seekers and migrants to Mexico
Evasion of U.S. anti-trafficking laws adopted to protect children
In addition, the FOIA results indicate that:

CHICAGO (CBS) We continue to hear from people who are desperate for help, but who are just stuck waiting for a callback from the states unemployment office in one case for six weeks.
We dug deeper, and with new documents in hand, CBS 2s Tara Molina on Thursday night had an inside look at how well the Illinois Department of Employment Security call center is actually operating.
Molina talked to a couple both dealing with unemployment fraud, and both dealing with long waits for help putting an end to it. Now, we have a better idea of why.
Someone filed on our behalf, and thats been frightening, said Gary.
Husband and wife Gary and Nancy are both dealing with fraudulent unemployment claims. They are also both dealing with the Illinois Department of Employment Securitys callback-only model.
It would be, of course, nice to have the option of waiting on hold for those that are able to do so, Gary said.
Instead, they are stuck in the states queue waiting glued to the phone. It took almost 6six weeks for Gary to get a callback.
Five and half weeks later, they called back, he said.
Nancy is still waiting.
A lot can happen in five weeks, she said. More fraud can happen.
Weve heard constant complaints since the callback-only model first debuted in July from people who say its failing.
We wanted to know why.
Also From CBS Chicago:
Several public records requests later, we broke that information down, and now we have a clearer picture.
The first day the callback model debuted, IDES call-takers handled about one third of the number of the calls they did the day before 2,086 compared with 6,025. The spokesperson for IDES says thats because contractual agents were being trained in waves to staff increasingly complex queues which can and often do result in taking longer to answer questions + calls. Going on to say the information we received is not reflective of all the information.
And we found it took almost a month for the callback system to handle as many calls as call-takers were before it debuted with the average weekly handling call more than doubling from 7.9 minutes in June to 23 minutes in October. When we asked IDES spokesperson why handling time went up she said; The average time could have fluctuated in the positive or negative if you were to look at the information as a whole rather than in the pieces you have, but she did not provide the information she claims we dont have.
We learned there is an that the average percentage of the time that call agents are not ready. At one point in September, that was 24 percent of the time. We asked the spokesperson for IDES to explain that. This was her response: Call center agents are presented with a dashboard in which they are either in ready status or not ready status (accepting calls or not accepting calls). There are a variety of reasons for which an agent may not be in ready status theyre on a break, theyre discussing an issue with their supervisor, etc. The industry standard benchmark for the ready status metric is around 80%, to which the contractual agents are consistently in line. Though this metric fluctuates week to week (perhaps the week in question agents spent more time speaking with a supervisor than in prior weeks), the Department is pleased with the performance of this metric and happy with its consistency.
And finally, we found that while call-takers were added over the summer, those numbers dipped this month, with fewer call-takers working in October than September.
Molina brought all of this back to the state, and sent a request to the spokeswoman for IDES last night. On Thursday, she called to say they need more time to go through the information provided to us. She got back to us Friday. This story has been updated with her responses.
CBS 2 is committing to Working For Chicago, connecting you every day with the information you or a loved one might need about the jobs market, and helping you remove roadblocks to getting back to work.
Well keep uncovering information every day to help this community get back to work, until the job crisis passes. CBS 2 has several helpful items right here on our website, including a look at specific companies that are hiring, and information from the state about the best way to get through to file for unemployment benefits in the meantime.

All of Eli Roths films are so imbued with his signature style and directorial sensibilities that they can never be mistaken as the works of any other filmmaker. Often regarded as part of the Splat Pack, an unofficial group of independent filmmakers who have been making R-rated horror films since 2002, Roth is most known for his horror projects like Cabin Fever, the Hostel series, and The Green Inferno. Knock Knock is his first attempt at an erotic thriller. The film stars Keanu Reeves as Evan Webber, a successful architect with a wife and two children.
One rainy night, he lets two young girls, Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) and Bel (Ana de Armas), into his home after they appear at his doorstep, asking directions to a party. He hires a car for them and makes sure that they are comfortable. As the night progresses, the girls seduce him into having a threesome with them. When he tries again to get them to leave the house, their playful demeanor takes a darker turn as they begin to blackmail him. For the most part, Knock Knock is set in typical American suburbia. In this article, we try to find out which locations Roth and his team used to film the project.
Roth and his cinematographer Antonio Quercia predominantly filmed Knock Knock in Santiago de Chile and the City of Chicureo. Roth has a long association with the country. In 2012, he wrote, produced, and starred in Nicols Lpezs disaster horror film Aftershock. It was through Lpez that Roth met his future first wife, Izzo, while he was working on The Green Inferno.
The couple tied the knot in 2014. Before appearing in Knock Knock, Izzo portrayed a supporting character in Aftershock and the lead in The Green Inferno. Armas is also a Chilean national, and so are several other members of the cast and crew. Roth once said that, between Chile and the US, he prefers filming in the former country as it is easier to do so there.
The picturesque Chilean capital served as one of the filming locations for Knock Knock. In the past, the city has hosted the production teams of projects like The Amazing Race, Kingdoms, and The Wolf House.

The glasshouse depicted in Knock Knock as Evans home is located in Chicureo, a town in the Chacabuco Province, Chile. At the time of filming, it belonged to an interior decorator, who apparently visited the set right after the scene in which the girls vandalized the property and had the shock of her life.
I saw her pull up and I run inside, Aaron Burns, who is cast as Louis in the film, recalled. Guys make sure she does not come in here. She comes ripping through her house. She almost fainted. Shes just distraught. We had to re-sod the whole backyard.

Barack Obama's Inauguration Day was on January 20, 2009. But for the daughters of the Bush and Obama families, the "passing of the torch" was on a day in 2008, when Jenna Bush Hager and her twin sister, Barbara, took young Malia and Sasha Obama on a tour of the White House to help them transition to their new lives as first daughters.
While on The Dr. Oz Show, the book club maven, TODAY anchor, and memoirist opened up about the day the Bush sisters met the Obama sisters. Bush Hager said she and Barbara "loved that moment," per People.
We showed them what was our bedrooms, which was going to become their bedrooms. We just had such a beautiful day because, really, we have so much more in common than what divides usespecially the kids, Bush Hager said.
Bush Hager knows the White House better than most. Although she was a teenager when her father, George W. Bush, was elected president, she was similar in age to Sasha and Malia when her grandfather, George Bush, was inaugurated.
The mother-of-three also recently recalled the time her grandmother, Barbara Bush, scolded her and her sister for ordering peanut butter sandwiches to the White House bowling alley. You opened the door, scolding us, telling us under no circumstances could we order food in the White House again; this was not a hotel," she wrote in a tribute letter after Barbara's death.
The Obama girls had a similar incident of adjusting to White House life, which White House interior decorator Michael S. Smith describes in his book Designing History. After living in a D.C. hotel for a few weeks, Malia and Sasha savvily learned to request wake up calls from the White House operator once they moved in. Mrs. Obama then asked that Smith install alarm clocks in their bedrooms, as the White House was not a hotel.
Brooks KraftGetty Images
Given their similar situations, Bush Hager and her sister felt instantly connected to Sasha and Malia. We saw ourselves in those precious little girls, because when our grandfather become president, we were their age, she said on Dr. Oz, referring to George H. W. Bush. So we knew what was magical about the White House.
And on that tour, they showed the Obama girls what was "magical" about the White House. According to Bush Hager, they got up to some hijinks: We taught them how to slide down the banister, which Im sure Mrs. Obama loved, Bush Hager joked. There's photo evidence: Smith included a photo of the girls sliding down a ramp from the White House Solarium in his book.
Bush Hager and Barbara also wrote a letter for the Obama daughters in 2008. "It's your turn to fill the house with laughter. Although it's an honor and full of so many extraordinary opportunities, it isn't always easy being a member of the club you are about to join," they said, per CNN. "Our dad, like yours, is a man of great integrity and love; a man who always put us first. We still see him now as we did when we were 7: as our loving daddy." They included other tips, like cherishing their pets, and "going to anything and everything you possibly can."
Ralf-Finn HestoftGetty Images
Now, Sasha and Malia are 19- and 22-year-old college students, with the White House years behind them. For Bush Hager and Barbarafellow White House alumnaethe connection remains strong. Were so proud of those girls, she said.
When Sasha and Malia prepared to leave the White House after eight years, the Bush twins wrote them a letterjust like they did in 2008. In eight years, you have done so much. Seen so much. We have watched you grow from girls to impressive young women with grace and ease. And through it all you had each other. Just like we did," the Bush sisters wrote.

window door installation
TORONTO (PRWEB) October 30, 2020
Established as one of the leading locksmith companies in the GTA, FC Locksmith decided to provide an even more complete package of services to its customers by entering the business of window and door installations as well as door repairs.
Increasing security, restoring security, doing everything in our power to quickly address problems with keys and locks have always been main goals in our company, explain the owner of FC Locksmith, Eran Gurvich. After all, we run a locksmith Toronto company; the higher security possible is the ultimate goal of all services. Naturally, even the best high-security locks cannot do much to prevent some form of break-in if the door is hollow, broken, rotten. That concept led us to our latest decision; that of entering the field of door and window services.
According to the official Canadian crime rates, the break and enter cases are thousands annually. Burglaries and home invasions have become a real threat, a full-time, lucrative business according to the police, while there are also organized and gang-break-ins. Crime tourism is booming too. Burglars visit from other countries to break-in.
Burglars simply walk to the back of the residence and try a window or the sliding patio door. Many burglaries happen due to unlocked doors and windows. But the majority of break-ins is made possible due to the use of force. The burglars pick or break locks, kick doors, vandalize windows, and damage strikes.
The doors and the windows must be as strong and kick-proof as the locks, says Eran Gurvich. Spending money on good locks when the windows and the doors all entry doors, the back, the side, the patio, and the front door, are of poor quality is not right. It's the combination of things that makes a difference. All entry doors and windows in a home must be strong and resistant, but also well-installed. This is where we come in with our new services. We don't only know all about locks but also ensure the excellent windows installation and doors. Let me ask you this. What's the point of having a good lock if the door or the window is rotten? And what's the point of getting a durable window or door if it's not installed correctly?
The official 2013 Canadian burglary statistics revealed that only 31% of crimes are reported. A house burglarized once is 12 times likely that it will be broken into again. Burglaries cause depression, sleeping problems, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In the 5-year period of 2008-2012, 1 out of 34 houses in the city of Toronto alone was burglarized. If we add the monetary consequences, the emotional effects and the fact that NOT all break-ins are reported, the actual risks are not only high but also come with terrible repercussions.
There's a solution. It's not absolute. It doesn't signify the end of crime. Break-ins always occurred and will continue to occur but the fewer the incidents, the better. And if you think that a properly installed window, door repairs, professional entry and patio door installations combined with good locks will lead this way, it's actually an easy first step. A dynamic step, we as a locksmith company, have proudly taken in an attempt to ensure even higher security, better solutions to our customers, concluded Gurvich.

Southern Charm is a reality show that focuses on the lives of a bunch of socialites from Charleston, South Carolina. The estates and properties owned by the families have a rich history; many of them used to be plantations. The series gives us a peek into the modern-day lives of aristocrats and a little political history of Charleston. What makes it so interesting, is the dramatic interpersonal dynamics between the cast members.
Over the years, the cast has seen a lot of changes, especially in the seventh season.Cameran Eubanks, Naomie Olindo, Chelsea Meissner, and Eliza Limehouse stepped out after the sixth season. The show continues season 7 with Madison LeCroy, Austen Kroll, Shep Rose, John Pringle, Craig Conover, Kathryn Calhoun Dennis, and her friend Leva Bonaparte. Let us not keep you waiting and take you through the beautiful locations that feature in the series!
Apart from focusing on the lives of the socialites, Southern Charm also features some historical landmarks like the Lewisfield Plantation and the Isaac Jenkins Mikell House. The filming for the seventh season was on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic but eventually resumed with a few changes. If you are wondering where the series is filmed, we have got you covered.
When the filming for the seventh season resumed, most of it comprised video chats, outdoor scenes, or filming through patio doors to ensure everyones safety. But the grand properties that are a part of Southern Charm are one of the main aspects of the show, albeit having a controversial past involving slavery.
One of the most well-known and historic plantations belong to Patricia Altschul, which is the Isaac Jenkins Mikell House. Built in 1850 by a wealthy cotton planter, this estate is a regular feature on Southern Charm. Patricia is known for the incredible parties she throws, although there isnt one in season 7.
You may also remember polo matches from season 4 and season 5, which were filmed at Brookland Plantation on Edisto Island. It was an indigo plantation from the early 1800s and was owned by many people before it became Thomas Ravenels place. We see the Airy Hall Plantation in the sixth season, which belongs to Eliza Limehouses family. Another historical landmark of Charleston is the Lewisfield Plantation, where Kathryn Calhoun Dennis grew up.
