Report: Connecticut city is one of the 'rattiest' in the country

The fear of mice and rats is called musophobia, and anyone who has it might want to be wary of going to Hartford, Connecticut.

According to pest control company Orkin's annual ranking, Hartford has one of the biggest rat problems in the U.S. The "Top 50 Rattiest Cities List," ranks places based on "the number of new rodent treatments performed from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020."

Hartford comes in at number 27, and it's the only Connecticut city on the list. But experts say the state's rat problem may only be getting worse.

Pest control experts told Hearst Connecticut Media Group that the increase in rodent activity in Connecticut has been going on for a while, and the pandemic is having an effect on it because the food supply has changed since Connecticut went into lockdown in March.

No longer able to dine at the dumpster behind their favorite restaurants, the experts said, rats have been on the move, away from the closed businesses downtown and in the suburban shopping plazas and to the garbage cans behind our homes.

I havent been inundated with phone calls about rats, said Rocco Cambareri, owner of Insecta X in Norwalk. But I know for a fact that theres rats running around because of COVID.

It's an issue that's going on nation-wide, according to Orkin.

"In an unprecedented year, the visibility of rodents has increased, creating concern for homeowners and business owners alike. As reported in the Spring, the pandemic-driven closure of restaurants forced rodents to find new food sources," the site writes.

And even more troubling: "Without food waste to consume, these pests were seen scavenging new areas and exhibiting unusual or aggressive behavior," Orkin reports.

One thing that hasn't changed is that Chicago is the rattiest city in the country at least according to this report. The windy city ranked No. 1 on the list for the sixth consecutive year. Los Angeles came in at No. 2 and New York City at No. 3.

Local rat experts as well as Orkin's experts said that as the weather gets colder, rat sightings will only increase in homes and businesses as the critters seek warmth.

Rats are rats. Its not like they hibernate, Cambareri told Hearst Connecticut. But you see more of them in the fall and winter because they need warmth.

Customer service is the secret to The Stone Cobbler’s continued success – Community Advocate

    - October 20, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Melanie Petrucci, Senior Community Reporter

West Boylston Have you been thinking about updating your kitchen or bath? Or have you been working from home and find your present space isnt meeting your needs? Jim and Helena Donlevy, proprietors of The Stone Cobblers, and their team of designers can find a solution to meet your needs.

We are a kitchen and bath showroom. We sell several different lines of cabinetry and we have two designers on staff. And we also fabricate our own countertops granite, quartz, marble and natural and manufactured stone.

The company began as a countertop fabricator in Worcester and eventually they added cabinetry to their repertoire.

Jim and Helena are celebrating their 15th anniversary in business, but they have over 30 years of experience in the industry. They have been in their present location at 317 West Boylston St. for almost six years.

Seeing is believing. They carry several trusted brands of cabinets that are beautifully displayed in their showroom, such as Omega Cabinetry, Wolf Designer Cabinetry, Wolf Classic Cabinetry, Homecrest Cabinetry and Presidential by Legacy Cabinets, to name a few. They offer a range for every price point.

We have our own template people and our own installers that install the counters, but we subcontract for the cabinetry installation or we can use an installer of our clients choosing, he said. We also supply sinks and hardwareWe do it all.

What sets us apart from other kitchen and bath places is that we fabricate our own countertops in addition to providing cabinetry. This allows us to offer a full design service to our customers, Jim explained.

Jim strives to make it clear that people dont have to go through a full remodel to update their space.

You dont have to redo your whole kitchen for us to do your countertops, he said. We often place brand new stone over existing cabinets.

When asked what trends they are seeing now in countertops, Jim replied that quartz was extremely popular. Because quartz countertops are made mostly from natural quartz, with the remainder being resins, pigments and binders, it is exceptionally durable with minimal upkeep.

With quartz you can be more creative with color and it can be produced with a consistent design, without the variation found in granite, which some people prefer, Helena remarked. It can be made to look like natural marble.

We take time with our customers to make sure that they make the right decisions and the right choice for their homes, Helena stated.

Helena added that they offer full-service design noting that that extends to cabinetry and surfaces for professional and home offices an emerging niche market because of the pandemic.

The Stone Cobblers enjoy a solid A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and have many satisfied customers. As such, Lynne Massi-Mussulli wrote on Facebook: They designed my kitchen and installed my granite, and cabinets. I highly recommend them! My kitchen came out beautifully!

As part of their successful business, they also fully subscribe to giving back to their community through service. Helen is quite active as a Rotarian with the Wachusett Area Rotary Club and Jim is on the Board of Directors of the Wachusett Area Chamber of Commerce.

Got Termites? Are you Protected Against Damage to Your Home Caused by Termite Infestation? – JD Supra

    - October 20, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Allie Gaiter* is a lifelong resident of Louisiana and has owned a modest home in Pierre Part, Louisiana for the past 20 years. Allie recently noticed damaged wood around her kitchen window and discolored sheetrock in the adjoining breakfast nook. She calls her good friend and local contractor, Bob Villa*, to investigate and repair any damage. Upon close inspection, Bob discovers that the problems are the result of an active termite infestation of Allies home. This termite infestation has caused extensive damage to the walls and floors of the kitchen and breakfast area and will cost Allie thousands of dollars to repair.

Allies situation is not uncommon. South Louisiana is a prime breeding ground for both Arid-Land Subterranean Termites (Reticulitermes tibialis) and Formosan Subterranean Termites (Coptotermes formosanus). These termites are among the most destructive urban pests in the United States causing millions of dollars in losses.[1] Most homeowners insurance policies do not cover first party claims for damage caused by wood destroying insects.[2] Fortunately, Allies home has been covered under a standard termite contract with a local pest control company, Critter-Ritters, LLC*, since it was built 20 years ago. Surely, Allies termite contract will cover the costs of retreatment to eliminate the active infestation and to repair the termite damage, right? Well, maybe.

Termite and other pest control contracts are regulated by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry pursuant to the Louisiana Pesticide Law.[3] The law requires those who are licensed to treat property for subterranean termites to enter into a standard written contract with the owner of the property.[4] The contract must be in a form acceptable to the Louisiana Structural Pest Control Commission.[5] In fact, the Commission has issued an approved Standard Contract for Treatment of Subterranean Termites (the Standard Contract) for use in Louisiana.[6]

Although the Standard Contract warrants the work performed by the pest control company and provides coverage for the cost of retreatment and damage repair, it has numbers limitations, exclusions and places certain obligations on the homeowner. The Standard Contract warrants treatment or repairs for a one year period with a customer option to renew annually for up to four years. However, the pest control company reserves the right to change the terms of the warranty from a damage repair and retreatment guaranty to a retreatment guaranty only upon notice to the customer at the time of any annual renewal.[7] Additionally, the Standard Contract does not cover damage caused by the pest control company at the time the work is performed except those damages resulting from gross negligence on the part of the Company.[8] The pest control companys liability for property damage under the contract is also limited to and shall not exceed the limits of insurance required under La. R.S. 3:3367 ($100,000).[9] Another limitation found in the Standard Contract is that it requires all damage claims to be resolved only through binding arbitration.[10] It also excludes damage caused by aerial infestation of subterranean termites with no visible ground contact.[11]

In addition to the above limitations and exclusions, the Standard Contract places certain affirmative obligations on the homeowner. The homeowner is required to maintain the areas treated free from any factor contributing to infestations, such as wood, trash, lumber, direct wood-soil contact or standing water under pier type structures.[12] The homeowner also must notify the pest control company of and promptly eliminate faulty plumbing, leaks, and dampness from drains, condensation or leaks from the roof or otherwise into, onto or under said areas treated.[13] Finally, the homeowner must immediately notify the company in writing in the event that the treated building is structurally modified, altered or otherwise changed, of if soil is removed or added around the foundation.[14] Failure by the homeowner to undertake these affirmative obligations may void all guarantees and warranties under the Standard Contract.

Returning to our earlier question will Allies termite contract with Critter-Ritters cover the costs of repair and retreatment? The answer is yes assuming that: (1) Critter-Ritters did not elect to change Allies contract from a damage repair and retreatment guaranty to a retreatment guaranty only; and (2) Allies property damages do not exceed $100,000; and (3) the infestation was not caused by an aerial infestation of subterranean termites; and (4) Allie maintained the areas treated free from factors contributing to infestations; and (5) Allie notified Critter-Ritters in writing of any structural modifications and/or the removal or addition of soil around the foundation of her home. If not, Allie may be in for a long and expensive arbitration of her claim against Critter-Ritters.

What Can You Do With Your Old Electrical Wires and Cables? | Earth 911 – Earth911.com

    - October 20, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Do you have a box of old electrical wires and cables lying in a corner of your house? Youre not alone. Around the globe, human beings throw away around 40 million tons of electrical waste per year.

Electrical construction material, including the types of wires and cables used in your home wiring, make up a huge part of the waste we offload on our planet. But its important to keep electrical wires and cables out of the trash they contain a combination of valuable resources that should be recycled, as well as plastic coatings that are harmful to the environment.

The plastic coating on the wires and cables is commonly made of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. If dumped in the trash, these plastics wont just break down harmlessly in the landfill. When exposed to extreme heat and other environmental conditions the plastic coating can release harmful contaminants like lead and dioxins into the environment.

Fortunately, there are many options for old or unused electrical wires and cables that keep them out of the landfills. Here are five ways to extend their usefulness.

You may be able to find buyers for your old electrical wires and cables. There are a large number of technology enthusiasts and inventors who hang on to old gadgets or develop unique new systems for their use. Your old charging cord may be just the type of electrical wire theyre looking for. You could try listing what you have on Craigslist.

Most of the metal recycling centers will accept old wires and cables for the copper inside it. In some cases, they might accept only the metal wire, in which case youd need to remove the plastic covering/insulation first.

You could also sell to electrical liquidators. These are companies that buy old electronic goods to sell to manufacturers or other people who need them. The quantity they accept depends on the company you visit. You cannot go with just one or two cables, but if you have one or more boxes of cables, they might be interested.

One of the best things to do with your old electrical wires and cables is to reuse them with your new gadgets.

A lot of charging cords and cables work with multiple gadgets. While this may not be true for Apple products but often, you can reuse an old cable or plug with a different electronic device. It is a good idea to keep a back-up charging cord for your phone handy. If you dont need it, ask a family member or friend who may need it. You can also try offering your cables for free on Freecycle so someone else can reuse them.

Electrical wires and cables contain valuable materials such as copper and aluminum, which are highly recyclable.

If you cant reuse them or find someone else who will use them, take your old wires and cables to the nearest e-waste recycling facility. Many companies that accept electronics for recycling, such as Best Buy, may also accept cables, wires, and cords. Its always a good idea to call first to confirm what they currently accept.

Universities offering STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs may be happy to accept electrical construction materials such as wires and cables for students to use in their laboratories.

Look up STEM programs in your city on the internet to find likely recipients of your donation. This may require a bit of research because not all universities will accept wire and cables. You could also check with local public schools, which may accept computer supplies such as charging cables and connectors for students who need them.

If you have an artistic bent, you might try upcycling your old electrical wires and cables. Check out these creative wire upcycling ideas:

S2 Cognition Tech Platform Unlocks the ‘Brain Wiring’ Of Athletic Performance – Business Wire

    - October 20, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--How does an athletes brain work when split-second decisions make all the difference between winning and losing in game situations?

S2 Cognition, (www.s2cognition.com) a science-meets-tech-meets-sports startup with just a 5-year history, has cracked that code. And the sports world, from the big leagues to the youth leagues, is paying close attention.

Co-founders and cognitive neuroscientists Dr. Brandon Ally and Dr. Scott Wylie, both former college athletes and previously research and clinical colleagues at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, have succeeded in measuring and quantifying the previously unseen characteristics of the brain that separate elite athletes from the rest of the pack.

With 10 Major League Baseball Clubs, four NFL franchises and numerous NCAA and youth league programs under contract, S2 Cognition is charting a solid growth pattern.

Our delivery platform for the evaluation is a specially-designed laptop computer with millisecond precision, Dr. Ally said. In a 30-45 minute test, we are able to learn detailed information about a players visual processing, instinctive read-react, and motor control skills. Its these kinds of cognitive processes that allow a coach to know how a hitter makes split-second decisions about each pitch, or how a quarterback reads and reacts to the defense while executing a precision throw.

After the evaluation, the player and/or his or her coach is given a sport-specific analysis of strengths and potential shortcomings based on the way the players brain is wired to make rapid decisions.

Every athlete brings a unique set of physical skills and cognitive instincts to the game, Dr. Wylie said. We can now measure the cognitive instincts and develop sport-specific training strategies and drills to help athletes be the best decision-makers they can be given their specific brain wiring. Weve learned we can actually move the needle on performance, Dr. Wylie added. The on-field training strategies we have developed are based on the science of how these decision systems work and can help every athlete perform better, even the elite level pro athlete.

S2 Cognition CEO Tom Noland, who has been with the company since its beginning, declined to disclose financial results to date beyond a description of annual revenues in the growth phase. He noted that with a current data base encompassing the brain wiring of over 7,000 athletes across nine sports, including the very highest level of professional talent, the client universe is likely to expand, in both sports and non-sports fields.

Our data base, Noland said, allows any athlete who is tested to see how he or she stacks up against their peers of the same age and experience level, and also how they stack up against the very best. In the long term, we believe our breakthrough scientific approach has the potential to change the future of sports.

The largest numbers of S2 Cognition clients to date are in baseball and football, but the company also has custom, sport-specific programs and S2 evaluation reports for softball, basketball, soccer, hockey, golf, volleyball and lacrosse. For further information on S2 Cognition including a sample S2 Evaluation Report, please see http://www.s2cognition.com.

CHIPPEWA COUNTY (WQOW) As the temperatures drop, well likely all be camping out inside our homes more and more to keep out of the cold. Experts are warning that rodents will try to do the same.

Rodents like mice or rats typically find places to nest in during the winter and can find ways into our homes through cracks in walls, vents or even through doors.

Experts say rodents can be destructive to your home by gnawing at electrical wiring but also destructive to your health if theyre seeking shelter near you.

Rodents are definitely hazardous to humans, said Jason Freels with Wil-Kil Pest Control. Theres a lot of different diseases that theyre associated with through their droppings and their urine. Salmonella is definitely one of them that you hear of, you hear about hantavirus that does infect people.

Freels said the best way to keep rodents out is to seal loose cracks around your home, make sure vents and chimneys are secured with strong wire mesh and if they do get inside snap mouse traps with peanut butter as bait is one of the best ways to catch them.
