RPT-China’s new copper futures add another card to global yuan deck – Reuters

    - November 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Financials Tom Daly Mai Nguyen Emily Chow

(Repeats for Asian morning readership. No change to text.)

Nov 17 (Reuters) - China will roll out a new copper futures contract this week that will be open to foreign traders, in a push to boost yuan adoption and wrest some pricing power away from the established industry benchmark in London.

The addition of copper, the worlds most-traded base metal, to a growing suite of international commodity futures will increase Chinas appeal to the global trading community, analysts say, even if limits on yuan convertibility remain a barrier to wider adoption.

Such yuan-denominated products serve two strategic ends: they give global market participants another reason to use the yuan while also boosting Chinas pricing power in key commodities markets.

There is no reason why China, being such a big consumer, shouldnt be the price-maker...and not the price-taker, John Browning, managing director of Bands Financial, an international intermediary brokerage for Chinese commodity exchanges, said in a webinar this month.

The copper contract starts trade on Thursday on the Shanghai International Energy Exchange (INE), where Chinas flagship international crude oil futures also trade.

Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economic research at HSBC, said two key requirements for international investors to use the yuan more widely were gradually falling into place.

The first is availability of deep, liquid markets for financial products, while the second is smooth convertibility of the yuan, on which Chinese authorities have taken significant further steps over the past year to facilitate transactions, Neumann added.

Foreign investors ignore onshore trading opportunities at their peril, he said in an email.

A Singapore-based trader who is watching the INE contract closely said Chinas line-up of yuan-denominated commodity futures was starting to make it a formidable trading venue.

We now have gold, silver, oil and international copper contracts in yuan. That should scare the dollar, said the trader, who declined to be identified.

Chinas launch of its crude oil futures in 2018 sought to increase influence over commodity pricing and promote the yuan, whose internationalisation is a longstanding policy objective.

While trading volumes for that contract have been impressive, especially this year, at just one sixth of the dollar-denominated benchmark Brent crude they are far from dominating the global market.

Chinas weight in the global copper market, however, is much larger, accounting for about half the worlds usage.

The countrys emergence as the worlds second-largest economy has created an insatiable appetite for the red metal, which is used in everything from power to construction.

Booming imports this year have propped up prices on the 143-year old London Metal Exchange and the Shanghai Futures Exchange, the INEs parent bourse, where domestic copper futures are traded.

An executive at a major copper supplier to China expects that sooner rather than later, (copper) contracts will be in yuan and the INE price.

However, even the most bullish projections for yuan-priced international commodities trade dont expect it to take off for at least another five years.

Bands Financials Browning, who sees the INE copper price eventually becoming a regional benchmark, said strict currency transmission rules adopted after Chinas 2015 market meltdown have yet to be rolled back, making cross-border currency flows more complex.

The INE copper contract will be settled in yuan but investors using an overseas intermediary will be able to use dollars for the initial margin, the collateral investors must stump up to trades the futures, albeit with a 5% haircut.

Analysts say China may need to further loosen controls and encourage free conversion of the yuan to help investors overcome concerns about trading.

I think there would need to be quite a bit of regulatory reform, currency reform and probably the removal of capital controls, said Caroline Bain, chief commodities economist at Capital Economics.

James Wang, head of sales and dealing at Singapore brokerage Straits Financial, said Chinas strategic ambitions in developing a global benchmark price wont be achieved immediately.

We dont foresee (this happening) in the next two-to-three years, but in 10 years onwards, Wang said.

What happened to Kate on Below Deck? – Monsters and Critics

    - November 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Below Deck is certainly not the same without Kate. Pic credit: Bravo

Fans want to know what happened to Kate Chastain on Below Deck as Season 8 hit airwaves without the chief stew.

It may seem odd that some viewers are asking about Kate considering most people knew going into the current season of the Bravo show that she would not be chief stew.

However, many fans are asking what happened to Kate. Even Below Deck charter guest Charley Walters was shocked to learn Kate was not the chief stew on his latest trip on the My Seanna.

    Sign up for our newsletter!

Charleys group had a lot of issues during their charter with the crew. They endured a lot of fan backlash, which he addressed and admitted the trip was not the same without Kate.

Last February, right after the Season 7 reunion show, Kate announced she was leaving Below Deck after six seasons.

Kate decided it was time to give up yacht life for land life. She moved to New York City to kick off her next chapter.

Rumors immediately began swirling that Kate was joining The Real Housewives of New York City, something Kate has admitted she would like.

Although she was ready to leave Below Deck, Kate was clear she was not done with the Bravo family or Andy Cohen. The latter plays a pivotal role in the network as a producer and host of Watch What Happens Live.

Kate was true to her word too.

Since leaving the hit yachting show, Kate had a limited radio show on SiriusXMs Radio Andy. She also appeared on an episode of the Bravo digital series Ghosted and gave commentary on episodes of Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5.

Recently, Kate launched Bravos Chat Room alongside Summer Houses Hannah Berner, The Real Housewives of Potomacs Gizelle Bryant, and The Real Housewives of Atlantas Porsha Williams. The four ladies chat all things Bravo, current events, and pop culture in a virtual chat environment.

The irony of Kate leaving Below Deck after Season 7, which was full of misogynistic behavior, was not lost on fans. There has even been speculation the drama of the season led to Kates decision to exit the Bravo show.

Kate has admitted to not loving the male behavior during the toxic season, but that is not why she left.

I just feel like Im 37 and a half and I dont think a girl should be wearing a skort at 38, Kate told Andy during an episode of WWHL.

Fans and guests certainly miss Kate Chastain on Below Deck. Captain Lee Rosbach missed his friend dearly during filming. He also asked for viewers to give the Season 8 crew a chance.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo.

‘Million MAGA March’ Falls More Than 900000 Short of a Full Deck – The Daily Beast

    - November 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lets just call what happened in Washington, D.C. today what it was: An anti-democracy protest by an assortment of white supremacists, violent fascists, and conspiracy nuts. They came to town to collectively demand the disenfranchisement of more than 78 million Americans, Joe Biden voters, and to reaffirm that legal votes can only be cast by white folks outside of miscegenated cities.

Had they been marching against anti-Black racism or police abuse, cops would probably have violently rioted against them. Instead, the crowd of overwhelmingly white anti-democratic whiners and agitators made their way from Freedom Plaza to the Supreme Court with nary a tear gas canister lobbed or billy club deployed.

The disparate groups of demonstrators called the protest by various names, including Stop the Steal, March for Trump and the Million MAGA Marchthe latter of which was cribbed from the 1995 Million Man March, because these people cant go a day without stealing from Black folks. There were far less than a million people there, though the White House way overinflated the numbers on hand for Trump, just as they did four years ago at this administrations inauguration.

Theres a pretty rich irony in people who cant properly count crowd numbers taking to the streets to demand that the nation accept their feelings about the vote count in various states. And yet the attention paid to a march of however many dozens of thousands of disgruntled and deluded supporters of a candidate who lost by more than 5 million votes is a perfect metaphor for the Trumpism movement. From the moment its leader descended an escalator to the cheers of actors paid $50 each to cheer him, theyve managed to be the center of the national political conversation.

The attendee list was a whos who of prominent white nationalist groups and QAnon supporters, including the Proud Boys, Groypers, and Pizzagate pushers. The media repeatedly refers to these groups as far right or fringe, but this was actually a pretty perfect representation of mainstream Republicanism. In fact, GOP politicians Louie Gohmert, Mike Kelly, and Marjorie Taylor Greene were there to co-sign this display of white entitlement, and egg the whole show on.

The white reactionary politics were on full, proud display. There were plenty of All Lives Matter chants, OK hand signs, and posters with slogans including, Ban Homo Marriage and Kyle Rittenhouse did nothing wrong. Fox News caught sight of a sign that read, 'Coming for Blacks and Indians, Welcome to the New World Order, which was clearly meant to be read as a threat. These arent people who are actually angry about election fraud. Theyre people who believe that having Black and brown votes counted is unfair. White people have rights, damn it. Thats their only real message.

The GOP legislators smiling at all this and hyping these people up know that Trump lost. They know that the unfairness of this election can be found in their gerrymandered districts, our undemocratic electoral college, and Trumps tampering with the USPS. They know that they are potentially stoking violence, delegitimizing the incoming Biden administration, fomenting white racist hate and undermining democracy. Theyre just too invested in maintaining their own power to care.

Speaking of not caring, Trump, who teased an appearance at the rally on Friday, passed through the crowd in his motorcade. Here was a moment when the president, who has been gassing up his followers on conspiracies and racism since before he made it to the White House, could stop his car, step outside, and address his fawning adorerswho unlike the press hes assiduously avoiding, wont have any follow-up questions about the timeline for conceding his historic loss. Instead, he rolled right through them, in his mobile version of a castle, and headed to where he really wanted to bethe golf course. His supporters carried on their protest for Trump, unable to see themselves as the pawns that they are.

The takeaway from the day was pretty simple: There is no way to make these people believe that theyve lost, because they dont believe in democracy. There is no recount that will satisfy them. There is no version of America they want unless their voices, their lives, and their votes take priority.

This was an exhibition protest of sorts. There will be more to come. And we should expect that its going to be, at the least, an annoying four years.

Below Deck’s Izzy Shares Why She Went Straight to Captain Lee About Wanting to Join the Deck Team – Bravo

    - November 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

With the My Seanna crew already down a deckhand during the first charter of Season 8, stew Izzy Wouters saw it as an opportunity to see if she could switch to the deck team during the November 9 episode of Below Deck. "I much prefer throwing lines and dealing with heavy machinery," Izzy said during an interview in the episode. "I really want to go outside."

Izzy first broached the subject with none other than Captain Lee Rosbach himself when she ran into him in the galley. "So I know you just lost a deckhand, so I was wondering, if it's possible if I could maybe work on deck and then you find a stew to replace me?" Izzy asked Captain Lee, to which he replied, "How about I take it under consideration, and I'll let you know?"

Izzy explained why she wanted to make the switch during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on November 9. "I went into it, and I kind of knew straight away that I wasn't vibing kind of with the role and vibing with the team and that my talents and personality would be better suited to outside," she said.

She also shared why she went straight to Captain Lee instead of her immediate supervisor, chief stew Francesca Rubi. "So I probably should have gone and spoken to her first, but I think we were all so overwhelmed and so overrun at that point, that I didn't really want to add anything more to that plate," Izzy said. "And I was kind of so desperate to get outside that I was just like, I will do anything to leave."

Izzy dishes more on working with Francesca in the above video from her appearance onWWHL.

Izzy shared on Below Deck that she has her yachtmaster offshore license andexperience working as a skipper. "I've still got a lot to learn, but I think I'm equally as if not more qualified than some of the people on deck," she said in an interview during the episode.

After speaking with Captain Lee, Izzy later told Eddie Lucas that she was interested in joining the deck team, and the bosun gave her something of a job interview on the spot when he needed help adjusting the anchor for the tender during the guests' beach party.

While discussing the possibility of Izzy joining the deck team in the bridge that night, Eddie told Captain Lee that she "was really helpful" during the beach party that afternoon. "Maybe we could take a look at it," Captain Lee told Eddie. "Not make a decision right now."

A parking structure in downtown Port Huron? Here’s how it came up in recent talks for city officials. – The Times Herald

    - November 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

The West Quay parking lot in downtown Port Huron in spring 2018.(Photo: File photo.)

Whether to build a parking structure in downtown Port Huron is a discussion that goes back years.

Now, city officials are using reconstruction of public parking areas to touch on laying the necessary infrastructure for a second deck at the West Quay lot in case, its ever needed.

City Manager James Freed said officials briefly weighed if an underground parking deck was possible at the citys Majestic lot, where DTE Energy is currently wrapping up reconstruction as part of a soil excavation effort.

However, as talks are underway for a similar DTE project nearby at West Quay, he said theyre hashing out cost details with the energy company as that lots size may be a better fit.

The process with West Quay is even more preliminary than that. Meaning, we dont know what the design for West Quay is going to be, but its one of those conversations were having, Freed said. And so, the very 30,000-foot-level conversation was, We dont want to put a second deck on it right now, but can you put the pilings in place today for a possible second deck in the future? And thats something were looking at. Thats really as far as we got.

DTE is paying for reconstruction of the Majestic as part of an effort to clean up century-old contaminants in the area, which was home to one of the companys predecessors, Port Huron Gas and Electric Company.

It wasnt yet clear when the city would consider another access deal with DTE, as they did for the Majestic. In October, a company representative said they were in talks to move to West Quay, and city officials said they expect that phase sometime next year.

Several downtown parking lots in Port Huron are shown in May 2018.(Photo: File photo.)

The question about parking rarely escapes conversations among city officials, business owners and those looking to invest in new developments downtown.

Freed emphasized the West Quay was just an idea. But both he and Cynthia Cutright, director of Port Hurons Downtown Development Authority, acknowledged officials utilize projects in the central business district to address future parking needs overall.

    Not just parking structures.

With new lofts going up, new projects like the grocery store and Wrigley Center on their way, parking is something we are definitely keeping our eye on, Cutright said in a statement last week. Having appropriate parking is key. We dont need just spaces. We are being mindful of where timed spaces need to be to turnover in front of businesses, permitted parking for lofts, and quick trip parking for grocery store pickups.

Among the more vocal figures about parking downtown has been developer Larry Jones, whos amid his third major loft project and has plans to redevelop the old Art Van building into a multi-use structure with lofts and commercial space as the Wrigley Center next year.

He approached Port Huron City Council members during public comment of an Oct. 12 meeting, calling the Majestic lot reconstruction a missed opportunity to address larger parking needs.

Freed later said the proximity to utility lines and the size of the lot itself wouldnt have added enough spaces to make the upgrade worth the cost. He told DDA members Nov. 5, We could maybe get four spots out of it.

Still, Jones said last week, he thought a site right on the Black River, where West Quay is located, may not be the best spot to add more parking and nothing else.

Rather, the developer said he thought city officials should be thinking more proactively about parking inland.

The East Quay lot reconstruction several years ago, Jones said, was an example of another missed opportunity. There was also one other a much older one that he still references in talking about the kinds of infrastructure that developers like him might look for long-term when deciding whether to invest in Port Huron.

When me and Brent first came to Port Huron here on 10 years ago, Bruce Brown, the very first time we met him, he has a board in his office, and he tries getting us to build a hotel in that parking lot where the transit bus station is and a parking structure, Jones said, referring to his development partner Brent Marsall and Brown, then-city manager.

So, as the need comes about for it, and now, with us doing the Wrigley Center everybody is very excited about the Wrigley center they know the amount of investors and other people that are going to be looking at Port Huron. Those things are going to come about in the future.

Below Deck’s James Hough Wasn’t the Only Crew Member Asked to Wear a Speedo – Bravo

    - November 18, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

James Hough gave a charter guest a very special birthday present when he rocked a sparkly silver Speedo at the request of the primary in the November 9 episode of Below Deck. But it turns out the deckhand wasn't the only My Seanna crew member the charter guest was hoping to take part in this birthday surprise.

Deckhand Shane Coopersmith revealed that he, too, was asked to wear a Speedo that night during his appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on November 9 (clip above). "Oh, they asked me. They wanted to get me in a Speedo, too, but I didn't want to get in there," he explained. "And James kind of jumped in at the right time, too."

As for why Shane declined the offer, he said he was thinking about his family back home. "I said no right away because I know my grandma's gonna watch Below Deck, and I don't want her seeing me in a Speedo on national TV," he said, later adding on WWHL that it was one of the "wildest requests" from a guest he's ever turned down.

James immediately said he was "game" for putting on the Speedo when Eddie Lucas relayed the charter guest's request to him on Below Deck, and the bosun called the deckhand "a team player." "This could be a lot of fun," James said in an interview during the episode.

Even though James appeared to be at the center of some drama among the charter guests that night, the Speedo was ultimately a hit.

    The Week

President Trump's campaign on Monday replaced its entire legal team arguing his key federal lawsuit in Pennsylvania, naming conservative Harrisburg talk show host Marc Scaringi the lead lawyer in the case. The two Texas lawyers Scaringi replaced had been appointed Friday, taking over for the law firm Porter, Wright Morris & Arthur, which bowed out.On Monday night, Scaringi asked U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann to move back Tuesday's make-or-break hearing in the case, and Brann said no, "Scarinigi is aware of the schedule set by the court in this matter" and "counsel for the parties are expected to be prepared for argument and questioning." The lawsuit in question Trump's main effort to overturn his loss in the state to President-elect Joe Biden was dramatically scaled back Sunday.Scaringi was already publicly skeptical of Trump's chances, telling his radio audience Nov. 7 that "in my view, the litigation will not work" to "reverse this election," and "there really are no bombshells that are about to drop that will derail a Biden presidency, including these lawsuits." Cloud-based technology is having its moment, especially in the legal industry.

As attorneys have been propelled to work remotely amid the pandemic, data security and streamlined work processes are top-of-mind for law firms, leading them to adopt cloud technology. A recent Clio report found that nearly 80% of respondents use cloud storage and 96% plan on doing so moving forward.

Investors are taking note. Disco, a cloud-based ediscovery platform that uses artificial intelligence to streamline the litigation process, snapped up $60 million in equity financing this October.

Its Series F, led by Georgian Partners and also backed by VC titans like Bessemer Venture Partners and LiveOak Venture Partners, brings total investment to $195 million, valuing the company at $785 million.

Launched in Houston in 2012, Disco offers AI-fueled products geared towards helping lawyers review and analyze vast quantities of documents, allowing them to more efficiently determine which ones are relevant to a case.

"We're leveraging this basic idea that we want lawyers to spend their time working on the things that only they can do. And we want technology to automate away the boring, mundane, and repetitive tasks," explained Kiwi Camara, Disco's CEO and cofounder.
