City of Atlanta Enters Bid to Host the 2026 FIFA World Cup
City supports FIFA's human rights call-to-action
ATLANTAIn 2026, the FIFA World Cup, the world's largest and most prestigious sporting event, is coming to the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Twenty-three (23) cities across North America were submitted as a part of the successful 2026 United Bid, but likely only 16 cities 10 in the United States, three (3) in Canada, and three (3) in Mexico will be selected by FIFA as Official Host Cities. Atlanta is currently in the bidding process to have the honor of serving as an Official Host City of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"Atlanta offers the best that any city can offerrich culture and diversity, support of human rights issues and a history of successfully hosting national and international events which makes the city a natural place to host the FIFA World Cup," said Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. "Thank you to the FIFA Organizing Committee for considering Atlanta as a Host City for the 2026 competition."
Atlanta is no stranger to hosting large-scale sporting events. In addition to hosting the historic 1996 Olympic Games, the city has hosted three Super Bowl games, four NCAA Men's Final Four tournaments and 24 consecutive Southeastern Conference (SEC) football championship games. Many of the world's visionaries have called Atlanta home, including historic changemakers like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Congressman John Lewis and President Jimmy Carter. Collectively, Atlanta's history in the Civil Rights Movement and diversity also makes the city uniquely qualified to host this event.
As part of the overall Venue Selection process currently being carried out by FIFA and U.S. Soccer, the Candidate Host Cities have been tasked with conducting a thorough stakeholder engagement exercise to examine the human rights-related risks and opportunities posed for the city of Atlanta in hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The human rights component of the selection criteria set by FIFA is the most extensive ever for a mega-sporting event.
Atlanta commends FIFA and U.S. Soccer for their commitment to safety and human rights, through their historic human rights protection requirements for Host Cities. The City of Atlanta strengthened the advancement of human rights through Mayor Bottoms' creation of the City's first Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; as well the appointment of a Chief Equity Officer, Director of Immigrant Affairs, Director of LGBTQ Affairs and the City's first Chief Health Officer.
The City of Atlanta is working to soon convene a Human Rights Advisory Council comprised of immigrant community leaders, human trafficking advocates and Atlanta business leaders to discuss the FIFA World Cup initiative. Leaders in racial equity, women's rights, disability access and more will be represented in this diverse council. Additionally, the City will host three stakeholder workshops geared toward reviewing and preventing any human rights risks in Atlanta, as well as the legacy of this important work. A preliminary strategy of findings will be presented to FIFA in 2021. If Atlanta is chosen as a host city, this strategy will be executed and built upon in the years leading up to the event in 2026.

When Lindsay Weiss began renovating her home on the edge of Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn, it wasnt just an opportunity to give the place a new look it was a chance to make a clean break from a failed relationship.
Ms. Weiss, an architect, bought the 922-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment with her boyfriend in 2008, for about $735,000, and filled it with a mix of furniture each of them owned and new pieces they acquired together. By 2011, they had broken up, and Ms. Weiss bought out her ex, who left almost everything behind.
For a few years, she focused on her work, doing her best to live in a home that cost plenty but didnt make her happy. I hated my furniture, said Ms. Weiss, 41.
After she founded the firm Weiss Turkus Projects with Noah Turkus, an interior designer, in 2014, she began dreaming about making a radical change at home, brainstorming design ideas with her new business partner. But as an architect with wide-ranging tastes, she found it hard to commit to one course of action.
I didnt know how much I wanted to spend. I didnt know what I wanted to do. It was such a daunting task, Ms. Weiss said. I do this every single day, helping clients make these decisions, but its hard to pull the trigger yourself.
By 2017, Mr. Turkus insisted it was time to take action. To get things moving, he suggested breaking down the renovation into a series of manageable decisions. I was like, Lets get the flooring, said Mr. Turkus, 41. Once we have our flooring, we can hit the ground running.
Ms. Weiss selected wide-plank European white oak from Walking on Wood. Then, as if to prove to herself that there was no turning back, she cleared out her apartment, selling or giving away almost every piece of furniture, except her mattress. I just ripped off the Band-Aid, she said. I thought it was a good time to say goodbye to everything.
Soon after, Ms. Weiss decided to replace the swing doors into the bedrooms with pocket doors, and to rip out the closets to make way for custom cabinetry. She stayed with a friend for a few weeks while much of the apartment was gutted and moved back in as the new floors started to go down, carrying her mattress from room to room to stay out of the way.
Another early decision, which inspired much of what followed, was the material for the kitchen counter: Dzek Marmoreal, a terrazzo with large chunks of marble in various colors.
I had been trying to use it in our projects, but nobody would really go for it, Ms. Weiss said. It had the color palette for my entire apartment in it, even though I didnt realize it at the time. It set the stage for every other choice.
She decided to keep the existing kitchen cabinet framework, but updated it with new lacquered doors. And when she wavered on what color to make those doors, Mr. Turkus came up with an ideal choice: Benjamin Moores Regent Green, which picked up on one of the colors in the counter.
With each decision and with Mr. Turkus providing a steady stream of ideas and encouragement Ms. Weiss grew more emboldened, searching for ways to amp up the apartments character by tapping into their network of artisans.
For the foyer, she hired Lillian Heard, a decorative plaster artist, to finish a wall with mottled waves of terra-cotta orange. In the guest bedroom, which doubles as a home office, she covered the walls with vibrant green, flocked Moooi wallpaper from Arte, meant to resemble sloth fur. For a closet in the primary bedroom, she worked with Peg Woodworking to create doors covered in intricately woven cotton cord.
And when she was in need of a monumental piece of art to anchor the dining area, Ms. Weiss went to see her mother, Dale Weiss, a painter in Los Angeles. I hauled home a piece of the Marmoreal, Ms. Weiss said. I picked out a bunch of acrylic paints that went with the palette and just told her I needed to fill up the whole wall.
Most of the work was done by the summer of 2019, but by then Ms. Weiss and Mr. Turkus were finally on a roll. So they kept going, adding art and accessories. Its like a snowball rolling down a hill, Mr. Turkus said, taking on more and more, and becoming this much bigger thing.
They finally considered the apartment finished in February, just in time to hunker down for the pandemic, at which point Ms. Weiss had spent about $200,000.
Mr. Turkus seems just as happy with the result as Ms. Weiss is. I was really excited to watch her develop into a decorator, because so many architects dont have that skill set, he said. She succeeded infinitely beyond my expectations.

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) The house at 5 Culvert St. is a nationally-recognized historic site, but until a few years ago, it spent over a century in disrepair.
In 2017, Darren and Lisa Tracy, the Saratoga Springs-based owners of West Branch Engineering and Consulting, bought the former 1870s office of Dr. James Ferguson for $1, and had a lot ahead of them. The 627-square-foot structure had gaps in walls, flooding, and a roof that had completely caved in and broken through two floors, into the basement. That roof had to be raised 6 inches from the brick in order to get it intact again.
The original windows are still intact, as are most of the outside brick walls. Inside, the building is a currently-occupied apartment, which the Tracys say found a tenant quickly.
The effort to fix the house finished this past spring. Since then, its received an Excellence in Historic Preservation award from the Preservation League of New York State.
Darren and Lisa Tracy previously restored property in Elizabethtown, which they got registered as a historic place themselves.

Mahalo for supporting Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Enjoy this free story!
In January, Hawaii head coach Todd Graham and his family will be handed the keys to a house that is completing an extensive renovation.
Its a house we found in the location we wanted, said Graham, who was hired nearly 11 months ago.Lets build a special home here. We wanted to make it our home here.
In planning the renovation, Graham recalled thinking, were going to do it the right way and build it up right.
It is the same approach he has endorsed in his first season at UH. While Grahams teams improved dramatically in the first year of four previous head-coaching jobs, the Rainbow Warriors are 2-3 entering todays game against 5-0 Nevada.
In these pandemic-restrictive times, Graham acknowledged, Im not surprised by where were at. We gave the last game away on special teams (with long returns setting up 21 Boise State points). But they showed tremendous progress. Were building something special.
Graham said the Warriors are embracing the culture of playing smart, disciplined and tough.
Were definitely changing the culture, Graham said. Im very pleased with the progression were having. We wish we won three more games. But you build the culture, and the wins will come.
For the second week in a row, the Warriors will face an opponent that is unbeaten in Mountain West play. Nevada also has the nations No. 4 passing offense (363.8 yards per game), led by quarterback Carson Strong, wideout Romeo Doubs, and an experienced offensive line. Doubs is averaging 41.7 yards per touchdown catch. The Wolf Pack have forced only three takeaways two picks and a fumble recovery but opponents are punting on 52.4% of drives. The Pack induced 21 three-and-outs on 63 possessions.
Theyre really playing at a different level than everybody else, Graham said of the Wolf Pack. Theyre definitely at the top (at) 5-0. We have to come out and play our best game. Im excited for the opportunity to go against somebody who sits at the very top.
Across the Aloha Stadium field will be Nevada head coach Jay Norvell, who was the pass-game coordinator on Grahams 2016 staff at Arizona State.
I really enjoyed my time with Coach Graham and the coaches there at ASU, Norvell said.
Norvell said he picked up some coaching advice from Graham, including the Wolf Pack walk. The day before each game, the Pack walk the length of the field. The first 50 yards, players think of the past, the next 50 are spent visualizing the upcoming game. Graham has implemented a similar walk for the Warriors.
I thought it was perfect to take that and bring that here to Nevada, and incorporate our alumni and boosters, Norvell said. That was one of Coach Grahams traditions.
Graham recalled the day he hired Norvell.
I can remember sitting at the hotel and visiting with him, Graham said. I was so impressed with him as a person. He embraced everything we were about character, discipline, tough. He came to us as a very experienced coach, and did a great job with us.
Graham said their families remain close. I think the world of him, Graham said.
6 p.m., today Aloha Stadium Pay-Per-View 1420-AM / 92.7-FM

The Resurrection Project will renovate and build 150 affordable homes. (The Resurrection Project)
JPMorgan Chase is providing funds for the construction and restoration of 150 affordable homes in Chicago. The move comes more than two months after modular construction firm Skender Manufacturing closed down after 16 months in the city, halting plans to build dozens of affordable apartments buildings in vacant lots across Chicago.
JPMorgan will donate $7.2 million for its project, which will finance the construction of 100 prefab homes and renovation of about 50 existing properties in the Southwest and West Sides, according to Crains. Affordable housing nonprofit Resurrection Project will lead the effort.
The money is part of a $37 million fund JPMorgan will use for similar projects in cities across the country, according to the report.
In late September, the asset management arm of JPMorgan launched a $700 million fund focused on developing single-family and multifamily rental properties in Sun Belt cities.

Tips to Avoid a Stressful Home Renovation
If youre tired of staring at the same (drab) four walls, it may be time for a home renovation. Your home is one of your most important assets and tackling a renovation can help increase its value. Plus, youll get the benefit of enjoying your new and improved living space for years to come.
We know home renovations are stressful but dont worrywere here to ensure this one goes smoothly. Read on to learn four ways to avoid a stressful home renovation.
Even with unlimited resources, home renovations take time. Assuming you dont have unlimited funding (reality strikes again), its even more important to prioritize your projects. Deciding what you want to address first will not only help you allocate time and money appropriately, but it will also help you avoid mistakes that come with trying to bite off more than you can chew.
Its helpful to break your renovation to-do list down into two categories:
Its a good idea to address significant structural projects first. Not only will these renovations add the most value to your home but leaving them unattended can necessitate more expensive repairs down the line. Non-cosmetic projects include:
Once youve gotten the bigger projects taken care of, you can move on to the fun partmaking your home beautiful! Cosmetic projects include:
Striking a balance between getting your hands dirty and relying on the pros can be tricky. To get it right, you need to be honest with yourself about your abilities (no, you shouldnt rewire your kitchen without an electrician, no matter how many YouTube tutorials youve watched).
Its also important to factor in the cost of your time. You might be able to handle certain projects on your own, but if the time cost is greater than the cost of hiring a professional, you may want to reconsider. Remember: time is money.
Tips to Avoid a Stressful Home Renovation
Regardless of how many projects youre willing to do yourself or how frugal you are when selecting materials, renovations can be expensive. Ensuring you have enough cash to complete your projects before you begin will help you avoid having to live with a half-way completed bathroom remodel or a kitchen without a stove (yes, these are possibilities if you dont plan).
Sometimes, this requires looking beyond your personal savings account to fund your improvement projects. You can always take out a conventional loan, but dont forget to look into options like a HELOC, FHA loan, or home refinance for veterans first.
Renovating your home can be exciting and rewarding, but it can also be frustrating. Bracing yourself for a few mishaps will enable you to get back on track faster. Its helpful to have a plan to keep your sanity intact as you take on this huge project.
Try booking a few nights in a hotel to give yourself a break from the renovation grind or give yourself one day a week where you dont do any renovation-related work. Your mental health will thank you.
We cant promise that your renovation is going to be totally stress-free (youll probably want to throw paint at the wall at least once), but we can assure you that if you follow the tips above, the process will be a lot more manageable. So, what are you waiting for? Its time to turn your house into your dream home!

The third episode of House on Fire explores the One Trillion Trees initiative to grow and conserve a trillion trees on Earth to counter the effects of climate change. Where did this goal originate? Can it really save the planet and where could it go wrong?
To answer these questions we talk to Tom Crowther, a scientist whose work did much to inspire the creation of the Trillion Trees platform. He explains how his team reached its conclusions, as well as some of the limitations of the work.
We also speak to restoration ecologist Karen Holl and environmental resource professor Forrest Fleischman about the charge that planting trees a distraction from more important decarbonization goals. They explain how the movement can successfully sequester harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, based on decades of experience of restoring trees.
Well also have a response from Justin Adams, one of the co-directors of the One Trillion Trees platform, as well as testimony from Pedro Brancalion, vice-coordinator of the Atlantic Forest Pact, one of the worlds most significant restoration initiatives. He tells us about the projects that have helped reforest vast areas of his homeland, Brazil.

At the White House, Ms. Psaki intends to bring back the daily press briefing, which has been all but phased out over the past four years. It is not clear, however, when those sessions might resume, given the constraints of the pandemic.
But as the incoming administration prepares to roll out a coronavirus vaccine and convince more than 300 million Americans that it is safe, Ms. Psaki, colleagues said, views a central part of her job as restoring faith in the words spoken from behind the podium.
The clown games are over, said Susan Rice, who was President Barack Obamas national security adviser. Jen will represent the professionalism and decency and commitment to transparency that has been a hallmark of Joe Bidens career.
As Mr. Trumps press secretary, Ms. McEnany has focused on remaining in the presidents inner circle and has made little effort to be accessible to reporters or to disseminate accurate information. Ms. Psaki plans to take a different approach, Biden transition officials said.
At the State Department, they noted, Ms. Psaki moved the spokespersons office, which had been on the sixth floor, where it was inaccessible to reporters, to be next to the press room.
Ms. Psaki, pronounced SOCK-ee, was a candidate for the press secretarys job under Mr. Obama, but she is arguably coming into it now at a more difficult and more critical moment.
I think she brings as much experience in that building, as much as anyone has ever brought to the job, said Robert Gibbs, who served as Mr. Obamas first White House press secretary. The world this administration inherits has more challenges than any in nearly a century. Having a steady, experienced voice behind that podium will serve them well.
