Application filed to begin demolition of former Orlando Sentinel buildings – Bungalower

    - December 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

EDIT: The permit in question is for 64 E. Concord Street and accessory structures outside of the main Orlando Sentinel. A permit has not been filed to remove the main building yet, at the time of this post.

An application for a permit has been filed with the City of Orlando to begin demolishing the former Orlando Sentinel campus.

Orlando Sentinel staff vacated the main building, located at 655 N. Orange Avenue[GMap], earlier in the year when its parent company made the announcement that it would abandon the building, along with the buildings that New York Daily News, Allentown Morning Call, and Capital Gazette also called home, forcing their staffs to work remotely in the interim.

The newspaper had been operated out of the building since 1951 but the property wassold to Miami-based developer Midtown Opportunitiesfor roughly $35.1 million. Midtown sued Tribune in June 2020 for three months of unpaid rent in the amount of $370,000, prior to them vacating the building.

An exact date for the demolition of the building has not been given at this time but the application was still open at the time of this posting and under review. Midtown intends to remove all buildings, foundations, dead trees, and shrubs, during the demolition. Parking lots will remain according to the application filed with the City.

The Adult Literacy League (Website) which had moved into the Orlando Sentinel building just months before the announcement was made that they were leaving the property, has since been forced to move to a new home at 2221 Lee Road [GMap] in Winter Park.

Editors Note: The Adult Literacy League is currently looking to onboard more students and has a waiting list of volunteer tutors looking to be matched with adult learners looking to learn how to read, write, and speak English. Demolition begins on long-awaited Cardinal Stadium project – CT Insider

    - December 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

GREENWICH Demolition of the Greenwich High School Cardinal Stadium bleachers has officially begun.

The tear down of the bleachers is the first step in a project to revamp the stadium that began with the formation of a feasibility committee in 2017. The scope of the project has been the subject of much debate and change during the time since, but construction is finally underway.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Superintendent of Schools Toni Jones posted a picture of the work and joked that she was doing a happy dance over the news.

Greenwich Public Schools is on our way to an updated Cardinal Stadium, Jones tweeted.

The Board of Estimate and Taxation released $4.6 million, in $1.9 million and $2.7 million blocks, to handle what is known as Phase 1A of what is to be a multi-phase project.

Phase 1A is to include construction of new bleachers on the home field side, a new press box, an elevator, new bathrooms, a new team room that will go underneath the new bleachers and other improvements.

Work on the team room and press box is slated to take place in the spring and summer, according to recent statements made to the BET.

Following this phase, Phase 1B is to include the creation of additional handicap parking spaces, a new entry kiosk and new lights on the existing poles. That work is still awaiting town approval before it can move forward.

Under Phase 2, which also needs town approval, a new access road from East Putnam Avenue has been proposed.

Russell Davidson, managing principal and president of Mount Kisco-based KG&D Architects, which is overseeing the project, told the Board of Education in November the current phase could be mostly complete by the end of the school year.

We should start to see the buildings under construction and foundations in January and February. The bleachers themselves will be erected in March and April, Davidson told the board at its Nov. 18 meeting.

Substantial completion is in the contract for graduation 2021. Were all excited about that, he said.

WGCH Radio Sports Director Rob Adams has logged more than 20 years broadcasting GHS football, Greenwich Youth Football League, lacrosse and soccer games from the press box that came down Tuesday.

It was a bittersweet day for him and other veterans of Greenwich sports coverage.

Im certainly excited for the future at Cardinal Stadium, Adams said on Tuesday. I cant wait to see what the finished new facilities look like and how WGCH and myself fit into that. But as I watched the video of the booth being pulled down this morning I felt a touch of sadness. That booth produced over 20 years of games and memories for me. I came of age as a play by play announcer in the booth at Cardinal Stadium.

But Greenwich deserves a better facility and I look forward to whats next.

Staff reporter Justin Papp contributed to this story.

PHOTOS: Innoventions Demolition Fully Exposed at EPCOT with Even More Walls and Tarps Removed – wdwnt.com

    - December 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

When we last checked in on demolition at EPCOT, it was clear the old Innoventions West building was almost completely gutted. Meanwhile, refurbishment continues inside the Innoventions East and Electric Umbrella building, which is the future location of Starbucks and a new restaurant.

The interior of Innoventions East has been stripped down to the bare supports.

We can see straight through the Mouse Gear building, which is currently also being refurbished to give the store more windows for an open-air feel.

A contractor on a lift was working on the interior ceiling of the building.

Portions of the roof overhang will need to be fixed before construction is complete.

The walls have been removed from this section of Innoventions West.

We can now see all the way through the gutted building.

This temporary, T-shaped metal structure has been outfitted with lights, to shine on the adjacent Spaceship Earth now that the lights on the Innoventions building are out of commission.

Portions of the roof overhang have also been removed.

Several black tarps, which previously blocked demolition from view, have been removed from this end of Innoventions West.

From this angle, its clear just how many walls have been removed from the building, leaving only support pillars.

Refurbishment of Mouse Gear is largely blocked from view by the construction workers break room tents.

Eventually, thissection of the park will be the World Celebration neighborhood. A Festival Center may no longer be in the works, butEPCOT promises a new festival area.

Though its hard to know how plans have changed due to COVID-19, above is the original concept art for World Celebration, in which the Innoventions West building has been completely removed and replaced with a garden area and the Journey of Water Moana walkthrough attraction.

Are you looking forward to seeing what lies ahead for the historic transformation of EPCOT? Let us know in the comments below.

    National Review

As Democratic Senate Candidate Raphael Warnock tries to assure Jews that he is a friend, new video has surfaced of the Georgia Baptist preacher again linking Israel to apartheid. In the video, purportedly from a Palm Sunday sermon in 2015, Warnock also likened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to former segregationist Alabama governor George Wallace.Warnock made the statements shortly after the 2015 Israeli elections, won by Netanyahus Likud Party. On the final day of the campaign, Netanyahu announced his opposition to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, walking back previous support. In his sermon, Warnock described the Israeli and Palestinian region as a land of violence and bloodshed and occupation, and said he heard a very clever politician running for re-election as prime minister suddenly announce No two-state solution, he said.Thats tantamount to saying, occupation today, occupation tomorrow, occupation forever, Warnock said, using phrasing mirroring Wallaces racist call in 1963 for segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.> During his 2015 Palm Sunday Sermon, Dem. Raphael Warnock explicitly called Israel an Apartheid State, describing it as a land of violence and bloodshed and occupation and he referred to Israeli leaders as clever politicians, and accusing them of being racist and vicious. pic.twitter.com/jfdkOUzung> > -- Caleb Hull (@CalebJHull) December 10, 2020Warnock urges his parishioners to consider the Middle East demographics. There are more Arabs in the region that Jews, he said. Without a two-state solution, the Jews in the region would need undemocratic apartheid-like policies, or risk being overwhelmed at the polls. The state will either be Jewish, or it will be a democracy, he said. It cant be both if you dont have a Palestinian state. You would have to have apartheid in Israel that denies other citizens, sisters and brothers, citizenship.Warnock also took aim at a statement Netanyahu made in the lead-up to voting when he warned that his right-wing government was in danger, and urged his supporters to vote because Arab voters are heading to polling stations in droves. Warnock described Netanyahus statement as kind of racist and vicious language.Warnock is one of two Democrats in Georgia trying to defeat Republican incumbents in a January runoff election. If both win, Democrats will take over the Senate. This wasnt the first time Warnocks past statements about Israel have come back to haunt him. Last year, Warnock was part of a group of African American church leaders who toured the Middle East and released a statement accusing Israel of engaging in tactics similar to those previously used by apartheid South Africa and communist East Germany patterns that seem to have been borrowed and perfected from other previous repressive regimes. In a 2018 sermon, after a Hamas terrorists stormed the Israeli border, Warnock accused the Israeli government of shooting down unarmed Palestinian sisters and brothers like birds of prey like they dont matter at all.As a Senate candidate, Warnock has attempted to walk back his apartheid allegations, and released a position paper asserting that he is a friend of Israel.I will stand with Israel and the Jewish people to protect their interests, advocate for the human dignity of the Palestinian people and their position in the world, promote peace, and ensure the U.S. remains economically strong, safe, and secure.

Company’s permit to tear down building to be revoked after ‘eviction by demolition’ – CBC.ca

    - December 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Halifax officials have given notice to a local developer that they intend to revoke the company's demolition permit.

The move follows a stop-work order issued on Dec. 4 to Ardmore Hall Inc., operated by Stavros and George Giannoulis. The parent company is Mosaik Properties.

Crews began tearing down abuilding at the corner of North and Oxford streets, even though a tenant had not moved out of one of the units and was appealing his eviction.

The provincial minister responsible for the Residential Tenancy Board was surprised by the move.

"Honestly this is a very unusual situation," said Patricia Arab."But we have no control or authority over building demolition permits, that's up to HRM."

Coun. Shawn Clearysaid the situation shows more co-ordination is needed between the tenancy board and Halifax's planning and development department.

"We should have assurance from theResidential Tenancy Board that they've gone through an appropriate process before we grant a demolition permit because this kind of eviction by demolition should never, ever happen," said Cleary.

Neither the developers nor the legal aid lawyer for the tenant returned calls made by CBC News. Social media posts saidthe tenantlost all of their belongings due to the demolition.

"Given the housing crisis we are in, I hope this guy can find a new place by the holidays," said Cleary.

    Demolition overload – Vertikal.net

    - December 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

05.12.2020 A seven axle All Terrain crane, a Liebherr from the Aguilar rental fleet, overturned in Spain on Friday after working on the demolition of a large steel and concrete cistern in the Madrid area, although this has not been confirmed. The crane, rigged with a short main boom and luffing jib, was supporting an element while it was cut free from the structure, however it turned out to be twice the estimated weight and took the crane over. Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident. The company posted a notice on social media which said: As many of you know, yesterday one of our machines suffered an accident and overturned. Luckily no one was injured it only involved material damage. Demolition work is very dangerous. The cause of the accident was a miscalculated cut, in this case the piece weighed almost twice as much as we were told, which led to the destabilisation and overturning of the crane.

We must reiterate that we are thankful that there has only been material damage and are grateful for the support shown by all of you. It is time to learn and continue working to prevent this from happening again. Click here to see the companys statement The incident was also caught on video which was also posted on social media: click here to see the video clip

Infamous River West Dive Bar Openly Defies Pandemic Rules With Indoor Service – Eater Chicago

    - December 10, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Notorious River West dive Richards Bar, which was in the headlines earlier in 2020, made it plain its intention to defy the state and local pandemic safety regulations as Chicago continues to hover around a 13-percent COVID-19 positivity rate and the U.S. sees multiple record-breaking one-day death tolls.

Patrons have been seen hanging out inside the bar at 491 N. Milwaukee Avenue since early September. But on Thursday, Block Club Chicago reported the bar had posted a proud letter to the door declaring bar staff will refuse to comply with shutdown requests or citations from city officials. The report also included a photo of patrons sitting inside at the bar. The letter, as of Thursday morning, had been removed and replaced with a sign reading carry out only. The letter stated that Richards had retained an attorney, a Western Illinois-based lawyer who has specialized in representing suburban restaurants in challenging Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzkers pandemic executive orders. Bars havent been able to offer indoor service since late October.

The letter states safety is our one priority and mandates that customers should wear masks. In challenging the citys authority to close the bar, Richards uses an argument with wording other establishments outside of Chicago have used to justify staying open. The Illinois Second District Appellate Court has already ruled in November that the governor has the authority to issue multiple proclamations stemming from one ongoing disaster.

Richards has a reputation for ignoring rules by allowing customers to light up cigarettes inside nearly 20 years after Chicago banned indoor smoking in bars and restaurants. It became the site of a tragedy in February when customer Thomas Tansey, an ex-Marine, allegedly stabbed 23-year-old Kenneth Paterimos to death just outside the bar where they had both been drinking. Paterimoss family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in August against the bar alleging that staff over-served Tansey, who faces second-degree murder charges.

City officials must now figure out how to address the bars defiance. Ald. (27th Ward) Walter Burnett Jr., who represents the West Loop, told Block Club that Wednesday was the first time he heard about indoor drinking at the bar, though neighbors have reported claims to police that the bar was breaking COVID-19 rules back in March. The bar was cited and faces $12,500 in fines from the spring violations.

The alderman told Block Club that there arent enough people to enforce the regulations designed to help stem the spread of the virus. City officials seem to have no qualms about cracking down on other establishments that break pandemic rules Mayor Lori Lightfoots office this week issued a press release announcing that seven businesses were cited for violations from December 3 through 6.

Richards attorney, Tom DeVore who is based about 30 miles east of St. Louis has represented suburban restaurant owners in multiple lawsuits filed against Pritzker, arguing that the governor doesnt have the authority to shut down indoor dining in Illinois. Hes gained a social media following among restaurant and bar owners who feel the Democrat-controlled government in Springfield has overstepped its authority. DeVore saw success in October when a Kane County judge granted a temporary restraining order to FoxFire restaurant in Geneva that allowed it to stay open during ongoing legal challenges. However in November, an appellate court ultimately ruled in Pritzkers favor, and that decision is now legal precedent. That could be bad news for the several pending lawsuits challenging the states shutdown.

Chicagos larger population gives the city more authority than other cities in Illinois. The city told Block Club that it has the power to close Richards and other bars if needed. Alcohol and building licenses give the city more avenues to take action. The city is reportedly investigating Richards. The city is sharing more details on how its enforcing pandemic rules. This week, the city cited Ann Sather, the Lakeview restaurant owned by Ald. (44th Ward) Tom Tunney, for serving customers indoors.
