Sandy Liang’s new Lower East Side flagship reflects eclectic and locally-inspired fashions – The Architect’s Newspaper

    - February 9, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Informed by her upbringing in New York Citys Chinatown neighborhood, the style of up-and-coming fashion designer Sandy Liangcan be described as playful, process-driven, and eclectic. Her bespoke garments reference a fusion of cultural signifiers and emulate this diverse locale. Its no wonder that Liangs first brick and mortar flagship should incorporate a broad material palette that reflects both its context and her approach. Brooklyn firmAlmost Studiodesigned this 1,500-square-foot Lower East Side boutique as a playground for a fashion designer.

Transforming a former laundromat into an expansive, multivalent retail space was a family affair. While Almost Studio coprincipal and Liangs life partner Dorian Booth was responsible for the complete retrofit, her fathers company Sun Sun Contracting Inc served as the builder. These deeply rooted connections ensure that the project is seamlessly embedded within the community and is as true to the fashion designers locally-inspired vision as possible. The new boutique is within walking distance of other family businesses and homes.

Booth and Almost Studio cofounder Anthony Gagliardi implemented a layered scheme that distinguishes different areas with layered materials and curvilineal partitions. These depth-defining mesh and semi-translucent curtain walls are broken up by half-archways, allowing for an easy flow between designated clothing display areas, points of sale, dressing rooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, and an office. Booth described this mise en scene as a stage set with overlapping backdrops.

Ingenuity and inventiveness provide a way to visit despite restrictions – ECM Publishers

    - February 9, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sometimes, what matters most for a project to succeed is simply the spark of an idea and many pairs of hands to bring the idea to fruition. Thats what happened for a group of people at Stang Precision in Paynesville, shortly before Thanksgiving.

A family friend with a relative in assisted living called my father to talk about it, said Chad Stang. Their conversation generated the idea and he talked to me. Its a great cause. We thought that was something we could do.

Precautions to protect the elderly and disabled from COVID-19 in 2020, came at a great price, with very limited contact from family and friends. Visiting outdoors was a seasonal option, but the colder fall weather ended that.

Because of a slowdown in business around the same time, employees of Stang Precision were able to help construct a place for relatives and friends to visit their loved ones at Stearns Place in Paynesville, one of the locations where visitation was restricted.

It was a win-win project, to do something for the community and use our folks to do it, said Stang. We had excellent support from the hospital staff.

An already-existing gazebo was in the right place to be used for a new Visitation Station. There is a hallway connecting the gazebo to Stearns Place assisted living facility.

The project included finishing the gazebo. The structure was in place, but to be used in winter it needed some work. The workers put in a dividing wall to separate visitors from residents. They insulated the gazebo and installed heat.

Using equipment from Safeguard Security in Cold Spring, a microphone and a speaker were installed on each side of the dividing wall. The top half of the wall is glass.

Stang Precision employee Ryan Symanietz is up on a ladder, working on the Visitation Station taking shape in a gazebo at Stearns Place in Paynesville. He was joined that day by Bruce Stang.

All of the labor was donated, as well as most of the supplies. Spray foam insulation was completed by McPherson Products, St. Cloud. Bork Lumber provided wood and expertise.

Everything had been set in motion very quickly so that the gazebo would be ready for Thanksgiving weekend.

It was really a community effort, said Stang. We knew we could help and didnt think twice. It was really humbling and heartwarming and exciting to be part of this.

It was just amazing, said Angie Gerhardson, housing manager. Once word got out about the project, the tenants were just buzzing. It brought a lot of hope and joy around here, just knowing someone cared that much.

The visitation station was used many hours each day throughout the holiday season. Residents sign up for one-hour slots. Up to eight people fit comfortably in the gazebo, a nice location to visit in any weather.

It was really a blessing a priceless gift to both the seniors and the family members, said DuDonne Andrie, community marketing for CentraCare Health in Paynesville. We saw quite a few social media posts about the Visitation Station. People were saying they wished they could have that at all of the senior sites.

That spurred more action and now there are three visitation stations in Paynesville: at Stearns Place, the hospital and the care center. The other two were funded through donations to the CentraCare Foundation and were finished right before Christmas.

Stang hopes that people reading about what was done in Paynesville will take the idea and run with it.

Good deeds lead to more good deeds, he said. Its a very do-able thing.

We hope this story will spur other people to do good, Andrie said.

For more information about the Visitation Stations, contact DuDonne Andrie at (320) 243-7903, ext. 42276.

An already-existing gazebo next to Stearns Place in Paynesville was finished and set up to be a place for visits with residents. The project was completed just in time for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. The labor was donated, as were much of the supplies, by area businesses. Ryan Symanietz is preparing lumber for the gazebo.

This Is How You BBQ | The Feed | sandiegomagazine.com – San Diego Magazine

    - February 9, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Like a good mullet, the party of Bowlegged BBQ is in the back. The front is functional stucco with a barred screen door. Its either a shame the front doesnt speak to the sheer joy inside, or its a blessing because the people who know get to keep this secret for themselves.

One step inside and you get itthe pop, the visual confetti, the unrelenting stimuli. An oil painting of a man with a guitar abuts one of a man blowing a trumpet, photos upon photos of famed and lesser-known Black musicians. Two foot-tall figurines play brass instruments atop the cooler full of waters and Shastas and Gatorades. Gigantic basketball shoes hang near the back door. Not sure if theyre Shaquille ONeals or not, but anyone with feet that big definitely has a sports drink named after them. Every inch of this place is an homage to some great player or cultural force. Its hoarding as a joyful creative impulse.

Music thumps and screams out back on the patio. A single, muscular music machine, blinking various colored lights to the beat, absolutely blares Jackson 5, Heavy D, old soul and R&B and rap and hip-hop. Its 6 p.m. on a Wednesday, dark and a little cold outside. But crackling embers and woodsmoke from a few fire pits warms the whole place and backyard lights set the mood.

This is what the backyard of a barbecue joint should look likelong picnic tables made of whatever material school cafeteria tables are, two gazebos the sort you can buy at Home Depot and assemble if youve got cold beer to offer a few handy friends, art painted by locals (you can tell because some is half-finished on a table), a full camper trailer Id like to live in for a while.

I dont want elevated design with my barbecue; I sure dont want a plant wall. I prefer that lawn chairs and brisket aesthetic, like Im borrowing fresh air outside someones home. Bowlegged is nicer than that, like the yard of a friend who owns a hammer or two and tends to entertain everyone on the block. Seven or eight men sit at a table under a gazebo, holding court. No one else is here. Feels like we walked in on a family gathering. Turns out we have.

How you guys doing? says a man walking over, huge smile, arms out for the welcome, a little bowlegged. I note this only because Ive read about himKen Stance, proudly bowlegged (its listed as his middle name on the website), and the restaurants namesake.

Get you a drink? he asks. A minute later, he returns with two ice cold drinks. He explains his familys lived in this part of town, Oak Park, for generations. He owned this corner lot at Market and Toyne Streets and wasnt sure what to do with it. When his sister, Maria J Reese, retired from the educational system, she convinced him to turn it into a restaurant. Shed cook all the sides, hed just need to handle the meat.

I didnt know a thing about barbecue, but I said, Well, why not? Give me a couple months. I ruined so much good meat. He laughs.

That was 2017, and now hes figured it out. The pork ribs are especially tender and juicy, and the sauce on both that and the brisket is the sort of thing that would make computer paper taste good. We dig through the sidesdirty rice with what seems to have a great little whiff of oregano, cheesy mac n cheese, sweet greens, creamy black-eyed peas, savory cornbread. Business has been brisk, Stance says, even better during the shutdown (barbecue by the pound is a great model for takeout, since its always been the thing you bring to a picnic or outdoor get-together anyhow). Theyre looking at opening a second location.

I tell him how much I love this back patio and how I might just squat here for a while if thats okay. You should see it on weekends; its packed, he says, giving the obligatory clarification that its done safely spaced. People out here playing dominos and cards. Its a good time.

Halfway through our meal his brother, Carlos Stance, checks in on us, all smiles. We gather our leftover brisket and walk out that door. I look back at that unflashy front of Bowlegged and head home to spill its secret a little more.

These are 5 romantic and free spots to spend Valentine’s Day in the Brockton area – Enterprise News

    - February 9, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Darvence Chery|The Enterprise

If you are reading this before Valentine's Daythen you are ahead of the gamewhen it comes to making plans for your special someone.

But maybe you aren'tsure where to celebratethe holidayduring the COVID-19 pandemic.

Well, weve got you covered. We found some romantic outdoor spots in the Brockton area. And, as an extra bonus, they are free.

Here are some places you could spend this Valentine's Day with a loved one just don't forget your mask.

As you gaze at 13 acres of pond, looking at the horizon, you see a bench, fit precisely fortwo, perfectly made for getting close over conversation. Johnson Pond is located in Raynham and runs between North Main and Pleasant streets and off of Johnson Street.

If you want to give her the ring well before spring, the gazebo inside the Borden Colony Complex in Raynhammakes for great intimacy amidst the cold. The complex even provides great hiding spots in the playground and the athletic fields in case you want an audience. The complex is located on King Phillip Street.

If you want to spookyour scream queen, the park affectionately known as "The Nip" will be your spot. The lake has been known to be inhabited by paranormal beings, whether it be Native American ghosts, UFOs and cryptic creatures. The Nipis located offRoute 104 (Pleasant Street) on the southeastern corner of the pond near Lakeside Drive.

Don't let this historical industrial site fool you. If you get past the old factories, you and your significant other will have the chance to bond walking over the 200-year-old bridgeoverseeing the town river. There's even walking trails along the waterfalls if you care for scenery. The Bridgewater Iron Works Park starts on High Street, but make sure to get there early in the day as the parking only seats six cars.

After a hearty meal at the nearby Westgate Mall or another location in the city, you decide to walk off those calories taking a tour of Brockton's own D.W Field Park. The 650-acre park makes for many possibilities. There's aview of Waldo Lakesitting along the picnic benches, sledding on the field of the Memorial Toweror simply just walking along the trail greeting passerby walkers and taking in one of the few places in Brockton without the noisiness of the city.

‘Firefly Lane’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 10 Who Dies in the Finale? – TVLine

    - February 9, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Warning: The following contains spoilers for the finale of Firefly Lane. If youve yet to finish your binge, you might want to put off reading this recap until you have.

Is a finale still a finale if theres not actually anything final about it? That was the question we were left asking after watching Episode 10 of Netflixs Firefly Lane. Not only did it leave Johnnys fate unresolved and Seans future uncertain, it revealed that Tully and Kate hadnt remained Firefly Lane girls forever. But why?!? We were never told! But if you read on, Ill fill in as many of the blanks as did Auld Lang Syne.

1974 | In the furthest-back of our three eras, as Christmas rolled around, Kates dad Bud seemed to be getting wise to wife Margies infidelity. You get what you need? he asked rather pointedly when she returned from the longest grocery run in history with flushed cheeks and a guilty conscience. Across the street, Cloud was forced to reveal to Tully that shed given their regular allowance from Gran to Leon before theyd broken up. What were they supposed to do for food, then? Theres bread, said the Mother of the Year. Make toast! Even if she hadnt been high as a kite, she wouldnt have been worried. Leon had left behind a stash of drugs; as soon as she sold it, theyd be rolling in green. And not the kind that she was so fond of smoking, either. Well, not only that kind, anyway.

While trimming the tree at the Mularkeys, Cloud did what she does best and made a scene, first by mentioning that shed seen Margie in town with some guy, then by pointing out that the factory at which Bud worked made more than the Mars Rover, it also made bombs that were then dropped on villages in Vietnam. Erm, who wants a Christmas cookie? asked Margie. After Buds blood pressure came back down, at least a little, he privately informed his wife that shed have to make a choice. OK, Margie replied. And since we know she was still with him years later, she obviously picked him over Bruce from church. But that wasnt the end of the drama on Firefly Lane. Shortly, Cloud was busted for dealing drugs, and to Tully and Kates mutual horror, the former was sent to live with her Gran.

1980S | In our middle era, Kate and Johnnys chemistry was on full display at KPOC to the point that only Kate didnt notice it at a Carol Tries It meeting. Afterwards, she insisted to Tully that she and her crush had agreed to just be friends. But apparently, her breasts hadnt gotten the memo. Ive never actually seen a bosom heaving in real life, cracked Tully. If Kate was still into their boss, would she be going to the office Christmas party with a blind date who was said to be a megahunk? In fact, she might, suggested Tully to make Johnny jealous. Mind you, they never made it to the bash. As Kates date arrived to pick her up, she received a call that her father had had a heart attack. So, uh, rain check? said the megahunk. After Bud had been declared out of the woods and Johnny had driven Kate home, the Aussie revealed that Margie had asked him to stay overnight in Seans room so that her daughter wouldnt be all alone. Was that opportunity that we heard knocking?

In fact, it was. At last, Kate planted a kiss on Johnnyfrom which he pulled away. Finally, they dispensed with their long list of his and hers misunderstandings. But since he still didnt want to mess up their friendship, they went to bed separately. At least briefly. Before long, she was getting up to go to his room, only to find him at her door. To hell with their friendship, he joked. Ive got other friends. Plus, Im in love with you. So they consummated their eons-long flirtation. In other developments, when Tully visited Wilsons office to sign her KLET contract, the creep made pass after pass at her until she finally had to knee him in the groin. Good luck, he spat as she left. Your only talent was getting shot. Ah, if only that had been the last she or we saw of him

2003 | In our final era, as Marah and Emma worked on a school project upstairs with goth pal Josh, Kate and Travis canoodled downstairs. That is, they did until she removed her tongue from his mouth long enough to moan, Oh, Johnny. Oops. When she subsequently reported her disastrous gaffe to Tully, her pal advised her to invite Travis over again, then greet him at the door naked. As for Tullys predicament, Kate suggested that she simply apologize to Max. And it appeared that she was going to do just that when she arrived home to find her husband there. But she choked the words back down when he shared that hed learned that they could get an annulment that very week. Heartbroken, she went over to Kates and crawled into bed with her bestie. Wait a day, Kate said, then ask Max to meet at the gazebo in the park where the wedding had taken place. Wasnt that from a movie? Its from every movie, Kate admitted, because its just. That. Romantic.

The following day, Kate left a series of rambling messages for Travis, one of which included a colorful description of their make-out sessionsand was heard by Marah, Emma and Josh, who remarked to his mortified friend, Dude, your mom is buck wild. At The Girlfriend Hour, Wilson apologized to Tully for his past behavior. But the misogynist pig hadnt really changed at all. Soon, hed foisted on her Brooks, an obnoxious male guest to interview in hopes of attracting a bigger audience of guys. Men, he insisted, mean bigger ad dollars. Uh, since when? Afterwards, she was so furious that she punched her dressing-room mirror which gave her the perfect excuse to call EMT Max. All I do, he noted, is chase you. So he wasnt sure that he wanted to take the second chance that she was offering. Well, shed be at the gazebo the following day if he decided that he did want an I do-over.

That evening, Kate, apparently unfamiliar with the concept of a peephole, answered her door naked. Care to come in for some hot nog? she asked Travis who it turned out had brought his mother along. Once Mom excused herself, Travis assured Kate that she didnt have to try so hard. They could take their time and figure out what they were to one another. Later, though, it wasnt Travis who was on her mind but Johnny. Just as in the 80s, she ran to the door to go to him, only to find him already on the other side. Also just as in the 80s, they had sex. The following morning, after she dropped him at the airport, she admitted to Tully, I think Im still in love with him. Tullys and the only possible response: Duh. At The Girlfriend Hour, Wilson reported that the network had loved Tullys interplay with Brooks, so he was being made her new co-host. Of my show? exclaimed Tully. Actually, its my show, Wilson reminded her. He could have it, then; she quit.

When Tully arrived at the gazebo for her date with destiny, Max was a no-show. But of course Kate was there, you know, just in case. Back at Kates mansion, the pals were comforting one another when Sean showed up to join them in the worlds largest chair. Hed just come out to Julia, he said. And shed immediately shown him the door. As the episode and the season drew to a conclusion, we got a glimpse of Johnnys experience in Iraq and saw him step perilously close to a landmine. Was he dead? Alive? Couldnt say. On New Years Eve, Kate and Tully toasted to 2004, the year in which the latter was going to make her comeback, she said, with the help of her new producer: Kate, natch. But something must have gone very wrong with that plan, because when we returned to the funeral weve been circling for episodes it turned out to be Buds, by the way the besties seemed to have put the E-N-D in friends. No one wants you here, Kate told Tully, who felt as if shed been punished enough for some undisclosed transgression. When I said I could never forgive you for what you did, what did you think that meant?

Obviously, the show cant end-end here, right? There will have to be a Season 2. If there is, will you watch? On your way to the comments, stop off at the poll below to grade the finale and Season 1 as a whole.
