Pandemic pricing? Cost of a patio heater quadrupled on Amazon – CBS News

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

A patio heater that cost $150 on Amazon back in late 2019 had soared to $699 a year later, one of hundreds of products the online marketplaces sells whose price surged during thecoronavirus pandemic, according to a consumer advocacy group.

In ananalysisof 750 products sold on the platform, U.S. PIRG Education Fund found that 409 items saw prices jump more than 20% in 2020, while 136 at least doubled in price.

The spikes largely involved items viewed as necessities during the public health crisis, including surgical gloves, eye goggles, toilet paper and cough syrup. Across 15 product categories examined by U.S. PIRG, the highest price increases ranged from $13.10 to $4,000, with patio heaters showing among the 10 largest price jumps.

In the past year, 61% of patio heaters sold on Amazon increased in price by at least 20%, and 45% at least doubled. The highest jump was $549, from $150 to $699. Other products that saw similar spikes include oral thermometers, disinfection wipes and hand sanitizers. (See U.S. PIRG chart below.)

"Our research throughout the pandemic has revealed massive price spikes on Amazon listings," U.S. PIRG stated.

"It's not meant to imply that this is true in all cases only to reinforce the point that these price hikes can't always be blamed on heightened demand," Grace Brombach, a consumer watchdog associate and author of the study, told CBS MoneyWatch last week.

"We believe Amazon has the technology and resources to combat this," Brombach said of the company, which reported record sales of $96 billion in the third quarter of 2020, a period that saw its profits tripling to $6.3 billion from a year earlier.

Amazon acknowledges that the pandemic has boosted demand and plumped up its profits as millions of Americans stepped up their shopping online. But the company said it has both the automated and the manual means in place to ensure prices are fair to consumers.

"Our systems are designed to meet the best available price amongst our competitors," an Amazon spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch in an email. "Sellers set their own product prices in our store. We have a long-standing policy against price-gouging, have processes in place to proactively block suspicious offers and monitor our store 24/7 for violations."

Amazon blocked or removed more than 39 million offers and suspended more than 13,000 accounts for attempted price gouging last year and referred the most egregious offenders to federal and state law enforcement, according to the spokesperson.

Amazon has worked with more than 40 state attorneys general to prosecute bad actors, and the company supports the idea of creating a federal price-gouging standard, he added.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData, faulted U.S. PIRG for focusing exclusively on Amazon in its latest report and not looking more deeply at pricing changes on other big venues for third-party sellers like eBay and Walmart. "You have to look across the whole industry to be fair," he said.

Its report released last week built on earlierfindingsreleased in September that found escalating costs on Amazon while "prices on the same product from Walmart, Target and others remain(ed) largely unchanged," the group stated, acknowledging it had not looked at other retailers in its most recent analysis.

The price of essentials like toilet paper and hand sanitizer did go up, partly due to companies dispensing with offers and deals to discourage volume buying amid product shortages, Saunders explained. "Prices are often determined by supply, demand and underlying cost factors," he said.

Saunders points out that "no one is forced to buy anything," a sentiment echoed by U.S. PIRG's Brombach, who said: "Our biggest advice to consumers is to shop around."

Patio lighting ideas: 16 ways to illuminate your plot with pendants, fairy lights, stakes and more – Yahoo Lifestyle UK

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Refinery 29 UK

It was a season like no other, says Libby Page, senior fashion market editor at Net-A-Porter, of SS21. With hardly any live catwalk shows, a handful of private appointments and many livestreamed events, SS21 fashion month was the most unusual on record. The fashion industry is certainly in crisis but its not all bad. For some, the pandemic gave pause for thought, with blockbuster brands like Gucci deciding to opt out of the show calendar for good as part of a commitment to sustainability. For others, like JW Anderson, who streamed a delightful video of cut-out paper models in a box, it was a chance to get more creative. Others still paid tribute to the heroes of 2020, using key workers as muses and donating collection profits to charitable causes. Not only did designers outlooks change; so, too, did ours. What do we want from our clothes now? Practicality? Comfort? Fun? Our customers habits over the past year have changed, explains Page, with a shift away from trend-driven items and into shopping with a purpose. So what does this mean for your wardrobe? Several aesthetic moments emerged from this most unprecedented of seasons: from serotonin-boosting joy to a grown-up move on from loungewear via escapism in the form of dreamy romance and beach-bound pieces, SS21 threw up trends which suit our current WFH lives while looking towards a more hopeful future. Were looking forward to celebrating the weddings, events and parties that will roll over to next year, says Heather Gramston, head of womenswear buying at Browns. The cult retailer is spotlighting dancing shoes from Paris Texas and Mach & Mach, and disco-ready dresses from Paco Rabanne and Rotate. There is a growing sense of optimism and we will continue to celebrate how fashion can lift the spirits and spread joy, adds Natalie Kingham, global fashion officer at Matches Fashion. Read on for the four key trends to come out of the most unexpected fashion month to date. Happy Wardrobe, Happy Mind Reasons to be cheerful were few and far between in 2020. Designers sought an antidote to the never-ending doom and gloom by injecting a healthy dose of serotonin into their collections. Good cheer was the order of the day, whether it was through joyful casting see Michael Halpern spotlighting frontline workers and Christopher John Rogers employing his roster of muses or rainbow hues and playful prints, as seen in The Elder Statesmans tongue-in-cheek tie-dye and Molly Goddards zingy hues a real tonic. We saw a sea of bold, bright colours in a multitude of fabrics and textures, says Page. We bought over 3,000 joyful dresses for SS21, including an exclusive sunshine yellow rendition from TOVE, and 500 lady in red options. Bring on mood-boosting clothes that add a little fun to our everyday lives. Grown Up & Grounded We may have embraced coordinating loungewear last year but for 2021 were looking to feel a little more put together. This neednt mean abandoning comfort; on the contrary, designers introduced easy styles and soft-touch fabrics which suit WFH life while allowing us to employ some sartorial structure. We love The Rows slouchy silhouettes and Proenza Schoulers take on dressed down knitwear, says Page of the SS21 offering. For Kingham, labels like Lauren Manoogian, JW Anderson and Khaite are providing the foundations for a timeless wardrobe which equips you for the new normal. Think refined knitwear, soft but smart trousers and failsafe basics like oversized shirts and loafers to see you through the working day. Heres Your Getaway If the most that 2020 threw at you was a cancelled holiday, youre one of the lucky ones but either way, were all dreaming of far-flung places. Sure, were not certain when well next don a bikini or roll out a beach towel but if looking to a more hopeful (and sunny) future is a healthy coping mechanism, count us in. Designers perfectly captured escapism through colour, texture, and prints even literal takes on under the sea at Versace, says Page. Etros Baja-inspired bucket hats and matching swimwear had us dreaming of sundowners on sandy beaches, while Michael Kors seaweed-green gowns, Altuzarras platform sandals and Rixos 60s-inspired beach cover-ups are crying out to be worn with plenty of SPF and a pair of oversized shades. Safe international travel is still out of reach but imagining our sun-soaked wardrobe for a future getaway is something we can do right now from the comfort of our homes. Romance Rebooted From cancelled weddings and socially distanced dates to the sheer domesticity of lockdown, there was little room for romance to flourish in 2020. Looking ahead to a time when we can physically embrace our loved ones, designers called for a little whimsy for SS21. Turning out ruffles, frills, lace and chiffon, from Erdems Regencycore gowns to Cecilie Bahnsens modest femininity, theres hope for romance yet. Despite restrictions, our wedding edit has performed brilliantly, says Kingham. Whether you opt for Simone Rochas darker take on the fairy tale (she layered harnesses over tulle frocks) or go for Jacquemus contemporary clean lines, hyperfeminine dresses can be worn by brides and beyond. .branding-banner{background-color: transparent !important;} /* Background color */ body { background-color: #302325 !important; } /* Color of entire page, except footer, up to 2000px */ article, .r29-article { background-color: #302325 !important; } /* Ad BG Color */ .section-ad, .row-ad { background-color: #302325 !important; } /* Advertisement label */ .section-ad span { color: #302325 !important; } /* Headline font color */ h1.title { color: #ffffff !important; font-weight: 420 !important; } /* Author and details font color */ .main-contributors, .modified { color: #ffffff !important; } /* Page font colors */ .section-text { color: #ffffff !important; } .section-text h2 { font-family: Brown Light, arial, helvetica, sans-serif !important; font-weight: 300; font-style: italic; letter-spacing: -0.025em; font-size: 50px; text-align: center; } /* Credits font colors */ footer .byline, footer .featured-name { color: #ffffff !important; } /* Credits module divider color */ .byline.breadcrumbs:after, .byline.other-contributors:after { background-color: #302325 !important; } /* Sticky header with headline and share */ .condensed-header { background-color: #302325 !important; max-width: 1800px !important; border-bottom: 0 !important; } .condensed-title span { color: #000 !important; } /* Dividers */ #squiggly_coral, #squiggly_grey, #squiggly_green, #squiggly_blue, .divider svg { display: none !important; } .section-divider .divider, .r29-article .squiggly-line { margin: 40px auto 20px !important; height: 1px !important; border-bottom: 2px solid #000; text-align: center; opacity: 1.0; max-width: 720px !important; width: 100% !important; } .section-divider .divider { text-align: center !important; } @media only screen and (max-width: 760px) { .section-text h2 { font-size: 26px; color: #ffffff !important; } .section-text h3 { font-size: 18px; color: #ffffff !important; } } /* Text links color & underline color */ .section-text a, .section-text a:link, .section-text a:visited, .related-entry-title { color: #ffffff; border-bottom: 2px solid #d78884 !important; } /* Text links hover color & underline hover color */ .section-text a:hover { color: #d78884; border-bottom: 2px solid #d78884 !important; } /* ===================================================== */ /* PRODUCTS & PRODUCT CAROSELS */ /* Product count color (above product carousel) */ .section-multi-product-container .product-count { color: #ffffff !important; display: block !important; /* add 'block' = visible, 'none' = hidden */ } /* Product brand/promote label font color */ .multi-product-carousel-container .product .brand-name, .multi-product-carousel-container .product .sponsored-product-label { color: #ffffff !important; } /* Product title font and color */ .multi-product-carousel-container .product .short-title { color: #ffffff !important; } /* Price color */ .multi-product-carousel-container .product .price .retail-price { color: #ffffff !important; } /* Sale price color, shows up sometimes */ .multi-product-carousel-container .product .price .sale-price { color: #ffffff !important; } /* Buy Button colors */ .multi-product-carousel-container .product .buy-button { /* Button font color */ color: #ffffff !important; /* Button fill color, set to 'transparent' to have background show through */ background-color: transparent !important; /* Button border color */ border: 1px solid #ffffff !important; /* Round or square corners, 0 = square, 40px = rounded */ border-radius: 0 !important; } /* Buy Button colors */ .multi-product-carousel-container .product .buy-button:hover { /* Button font color */ color: #ffffff !important; /* Button fill color, set to 'transparent' to have background show through */ background-color: #ffffff !important; /* Button border color */ border: 1px solid #ffffff !important; } #spcv_conversation#spcv_conversation .spcv_conversation-header { color: #FFFFFF; } #spcv_conversation#spcv_conversation .spcv_conversation { color: #FFFFFF; } Like what you see? Playoffs on the Patios sells out in 8 Hours – Buffalo Rising

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Playoffs on the Patios Bills game day event on Chippewa is already a huge success. 8 hours after announcing that Chippewa would be partially closed off to traffic, for 260 Bills fans to cheer on the team together, safely outdoors, the event sold out. Chris Ring (Rec Room), who organized the undertaking with Jay Manno (SoHo), told me that he never would have thought that people would respond the ways that they did.

I cant believe how fast people signed up to be a part of this, said Ring. I probably have 800 texts and emails from people who didnt get reservations for this particular game day event. People are excited about watching the Bills together it was a huge response, and something that were ready for. Jay and I have years of experience in the entertainment and restaurant business, so we will be reaching all expectations.

Ring also told me that there were originally talks of holding this event in another part of WNY. A friend of Jays called us and mentioned the idea for an event to possibly be held in Williamsville. We asked if we could host it on Chippewa, and he was cool with that. We were lucky because the Mayor had extended summer patio licenses though May, with the thought that we might be able to have a Christmas market. But then we went to orange, and nothing happened. But we had the paperwork filed with the City, and the all of the approvals in place. All we had to do was rent the tables and chairs, and the video walls.

While Rec Room is currently closed, this event is a shining light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel. We tried the take-out angle during the pandemic, explained Ring. But we were losing money. We ended up closing. Now, with 260 people, with proper social distancing (67 tables 8 feet apart), its worth it. We can get tax revenue generated for the City, put people back to work for a little while, and 260 Bills fans who couldnt make it to the game will have something to really cheer about.

Ring is confident that everything will go according to plan on game day. If everyone behaves (and as the Bills win), we will be looking to get approval for future games.

It is interesting to note that this game day exercise on Chippewa was always one of the overarching visions for the original street closure concept, which unfolded as the pandemic took hold. This past summer, I dont think that anyone could have imagined that the Bills would be kicking so much butt, and that Chippewa would be in line for such a game day frenzy in January. Sometimes, when the stars are aligned there are many stars in this case we see greatness arise.

Once the pandemic is over, it would be amazing to see this same sort of street party held throughout the year, with even more players, for all sorts of celebratory occasions.

No matter where you find yourself this coming Saturday, be sure to take all necessary pandemic precautions. Remember to Celebrate Safely!

Bent Paddle Reopens Indoor Seating While Unveiling Heated Outdoor ‘Patio Camp’ – FOX 21 Online

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

In addition to the roughly 120 people they can safely have inside the brewery, management said the patio is a big help for those who not be ready to sit indoors yet.

DULUTH, Minn.- While reopening their indoor seating per Gov. Tim Walzs loosened restrictions Monday, Bent Paddle Brewing in Duluths Lincoln Park neighborhood also unveiled their new patio seating.

Patio Camp as they call it is a pet-friendly, heated patio covered in a tent from Frost River down the street. Heat lamps warm the 20-24 people that can sit socially distanced.

In addition to the roughly 120 people they can safely have inside the brewery, management said the patio is a big help for those who not be ready to sit indoors yet.

A lot of folks with everything thats going on are feeling safer in spaces that are outside versus inside, said Pepin Young, Director of Taproom and Retail Operations.

Having additional capacity helps a lot with cutting down on two things. One: lines outside as well as spacing and social distancing within the space, he said.

Young adds that they will continue making improvements to Patio Camp; they hope to install infrared heating to the roof and extend the deck to allow for more seating.

Investigators say house fire in Warren that killed mother, child started on back patio – WJW FOX 8 News Cleveland

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

The actual cause of the fire remains "undetermined"

    by: Nadine Grimley

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) Fire investigators say theyve pinpointed where the deadly house fire in Warren started on New Years Day.

Cassie Gray and her five-year-old son, Otto, were killed in the fire at their home on Woodland Street.

Her husband and other son, Simon, were able to make it out alive.

Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle says investigators believe it started on the exterior back side of the house on a patio next to the sunroom.

Nussle says there was a plastic tote in the area containing ashes from the fireplace and cigarette butts that were discarded during a family gathering the night before.

That is the area where the fire originated. The investigators have not ruled out that the actual cause was cigarette butts but they have not ruled that is the cause, but that is definitely the area of origin. It originated on the exterior of the house on that back patio, Nussle said.

Nussle says investigators werent able to locate any working smoke detectors in the home.

I just think this is just another painful reminder of the importance of smoke detectors. They are so important and I would recommend getting smoke detectors with lithium 10-year batteries in them instead of a 9-volt, Nussle said.

The actual cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Slick Whiskers cited for violating COVID ‘last call’ rule and insects in liquor bottles – The Columbus Dispatch

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

    The Columbus Dispatch

A Far North Side pub has been cited by the Ohio Investigative Unit for violating state health orders for COVID-19 and for unsanitary conditions.

Slick Whiskers Pub & Patio, 12 Dillmont Dr., located in a shopping plaza off the east side of North High Street (U.S. 23) and south ofLazelle Road East, was cited Monday by OIU agents for improper conduct for violating a state COVID-19 ruleand unsanitary conditions.

Agents, who are responsible for enforcing Ohio's alcohol laws among other things, reported that at 10:15 p.m. they observed patrons consuming and purchasing alcoholic beverages at the pub in violation of the state's "last call" requirement for bars and restaurants to stop serving alcohol at 10 p.m. because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In additions, agents reported they observed "debris and insects in liquor bottles" during a subsequent inspection of the establishment.

The case against the pub, which formerly operated under the Brew-Stirs name, will go before the Ohio Liquor Control Commission for potential penalties, including fines and/or the suspension or revocation of its liquor permit.

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

BOCADO, an acclaimed restaurant that first opened in Atlantas Westside neighborhood in 2009, is bringing its American cuisine across state borders to Charlotte, North Carolina, this summer. Named BOCADO Bar + Diner, the new restaurant will open at Atherton in the former Big Ben Pub space. In response to COVID-19, BOCADO Bar + Diner plans to follow safety measures upon opening to provide a safe dining experience, including distancing tables, requiring masks for staff and guests unless seated at a table, providing QR code menus, offering touchless curbside pick-up and outdoor seating on a patio, and more.

Described as a new Southern American bar + diner, BOCADO Bar + Diner will honor the same seasonally driven and locally sourced food menu as the Atlanta staple, with an added diner culinary approach and aesthetic. Open for brunch, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night, guests can expect to find BOCADOs iconic Double Stack Burger (praised by Forbes, Thrillist Atlanta and Eater Atlanta) and favorites like House-Made Pasta Carbonara with smoke pork belly lardon; Roasted Chicken with stone ground grits; and Deviled Eggs with pickled okra and shallot. Brunch dishes will include Fried Kibbeh (adapted from owner Brian Lewis' grandmothers recipe) served with yolky eggs and field green salad; Avocado Toast with poached egg and pickled red onion; and French Toast Muffins with caviar cream and maple syrup. Raw Oysters, a Seafood Tower, Chilaquiles and more will be offered each day during happy hour and late night.

At the bar, elevated classic cocktails will complement the house menu. Guests will be able to enjoy a refreshing drink on the breezy patio during brunch or lunch or a boozy stirred classic to close the evening out. A broad selection of smartly organized wine and local beers on draft will round out the beverage list.

We're thrilled to be bringing Atherton our take on a neighborhood commonplace where visitors can make memories over good food and drink, and were looking forward to visiting our friends at Big Ben Pub in their new location," says owner Brian Lewis.

BOCADO Bar + Diners 2,700-square-foot interior, designed by EMC Design, will maintain the history of the structure with modern updates. Elements like heavy drapes, leather furniture and large mirrors lining the walls will convey a distinctive style in the dining room. A light-hued bartop and lounge seating along with an open kitchen will create an approachable vibe throughout the day for an enlivened dining experience. In the evening, lighting will be dimmed as the space transforms into a moody late-night lounge. Off the dining room, a large outdoor patio will feature views of the Rail Trail and include a fireplace for year-round use.

Where to Find Heated Outdoor Dining in Champaign-Urbana – chambanamoms.com

    - January 15, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

We know our readers are eager to support local restaurants. With help from our readers and other resources, we have put together this list of Champaign-Urbana area restaurants with heated outdoor seating.

Weve revamped this list to include igloos, greenhouses, and heated tents all very creative ways to keep everyone safe while still being able to go out to eat.

Please note, this information is subject to change without notice, just like the Illinois weather. We do our best to keep this info up-to-date, but restaurants often change course. When in doubt call ahead before you go.

Thank you for your help please email us if you know of an establishment with heated outdoor seating that we have missed, or if you can help us update any of the following information.

To combat the surge of COVID-19, the entire state of Illinois moved into Tier 3 mitigation effective November 20, 2020. No indoor service is permitted in bars or restaurants under Tier 3. When a temporary structure such as a tent is used for outdoor seating for multiple parties, at least 50% of the sides [must be] open to provide adequate air flow, and Patrons inside a temporary outdoor structure must be seated, and tables must be spaced a minimum of six feet apart, as well as other outdoor dining requirements spelled out in state Phase 4 guidelines.

Inclusion in this article does not constitute a guarantee that a restaurants outdoor seating meets current public health guidelines. Questions? Contact Champaign Urbana Public Health District.

    1. Many restaurants are now requiring reservations for igloos/cabins.Call ahead, because you dont want to be waiting too long. Weve tried to indicate which places require reservations.

    2. Look at the menu before you go, and be prepared to order. Many restaurants have their menus online, or again, call ahead. Some restaurants are offering contactless menus. Because these outdoor locations are limited, some may have time limits for tables.

    3. BYOB. In this case, bring your own (washable) blankets. Need hand warmers? Get them online in bulk.

    4. Do you tailgate? Or sit outside at football/soccer/other athletic events? Outdoor dining isnt much different. Approach your attire similarly. Wear layers if you dont want to eat in your coat, especially if you are in a tent or a greenhouse. Some of the igloos do get pretty warm.

    5. Heres our biggest tip for spending extended periods of time outside: be sure to invest in a lot of cozy headwear and footwear this winter. Warm hats and socks will be key to staying comfortable.

    6. Tip well!

Agave Mexican Restaurant, 405 S Century, Rantoul: Heated tent. See it on Facebook.

Aspen Tap House 2001 S. Neil (former Scottys Brewhouse): Heated outdoor tent with TVs in there. Watch your favorite teams.

Aroma and Cowboy Monkey, downtown Champaign: Individual greenhouses seat up to four. They are heated and have outlets for your charging needs. Coffee, studying, or lunch during the day; at night get dinner and drinks.

Billy Barooz, 2521 Village Place, Champaign: Billy Barooz has put what it calls cabins outside for outdoor dining. Reservations are recommended a least 1-2 days ahead of time for weekdays and 3 days ahead for weekends. Hold up to six people. Open for lunch and dinner.

Black Dog, downtown Champaign: Has heated seating on a screened porch (windows open, radiant heaters) in addition to a few greenhouses. In the interest of maximizing safety for our guests and staff we have recently installed new greenhouses outside as well as inside of our four-season open porch. (See it at the link). No reservations needed; first come first serve.

Bunnys Tavern, 119 W. Water St., Urbana: Bunnys has a large tent with heaters for plenty of outdoor dining. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week.

El Toro Loco, Urbana, 1601 N Cunningham Ave: This branch of the El Toro family has a covered patio with heaters. See it here on Facebook.

Fiesta Cafe, 216 S. 1st St., Champaign: Fiesta Cafe permanently installed heat on their patio even before the pandemic. It was quite cozy even though we were outside. Extra bonus was that our food was served piping hot! Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Guidos, Downtown Champaign: Eight greenhouses are set up on the patio. No reservations are needed and sat by first come first serve. Seat four. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Hamilton Walkers, 201 N. Neil St., Champaign. Hamilton Walkers now has igloo dining for parties of up to six people, for dinner only from Wednesday through Sunday. Reservations are required and seatings are limited, so make sure to do it in advance. (See photo above).

Jupiters At the Crossing, 2511 Village Green Place, Champaign. Heated patio dining.

Kofusion, 1 E. Main St., Champaign. Igloos available. Weve heard they are pretty chilly, so dress warm. Call or reserve online. Open for lunch and dinner.

Nando Milano Trattoria, 204 N. Neil St., Champaign. Heated tent with limited seating available. Reservations required. Open daily for dinner only.

Pias Sports Bar and Grill, 1609 W. Springfield Ave., Champaign: Heated tent behind the building. Serving food from their menu as well as carry-out.

The Original Pancake House, 1909 W. Springfield Ave., Champaign: Youve got to see the setup at OHOP to believe it (here it is, on Facebook). Open daily for breakfast and lunch.

Seven Saints, 32 E. Chester St., Champaign:Heated greenhouses in the Seven Saints Garden seat up to 4 people each. They will be seated first come, first served. They also feature a heated tent for dining.

Sun Singer, 1115 W. Windsor Rd., Champaign: Dont be confused if you pull up to Sun Singer and dont see a heated tent. Its behind the building. Open daily for lunch and dinner, and weekends for brunch.

Watsons, downtown Champaign. Greenhouse available, with limited seating. Open 11 a.m. to 9 pm. Seats six. Reservations are required.

When indoor dining is again permitted by state and county public health, we know that many restaurants have been working to make their indoor dining rooms safer for both patrons and servers alike. Farrens and Cafe Kopi, both in downtown Champaign, have installed UV air filtration systems, and other restaurants are updating their HVAC systems to improve indoor air quality.

A heartfelt shoutout to all the establishments doing this hard work to keep us well fed and most importantly safe.

The fledgling bar in the Stadium District is a new concept for Northwest Brewing Company, serving up its iconic beer in a rustic, cozy atmosphere. Northwest Brewings spacious, welcoming patio, affectionately referred to as the Pie Hole, boasts plenty of socially distanced seating, twinkle lights for ambience, and heaters to ward off the chill. This new neighborhood eatery (the result of a complete building remodel) opened in Tacomas Westgate area in 2020. Its got something for everyone family-friendly seating in the main dining room and an adjacent stylish bar for the over-21 crowd. A garage door opens from the bar onto a cozy covered patio with a fireplace, heaters, and plenty of space where tables are arranged to keep diners (or drinkers) distanced. Like at many restaurants these days, you scan a QR code with your phone to see Coopers menu, which keeps service as contactless as possible. Stop in to sample Coopers comfort-food menu, complete with appetizers like nachos, pickle spears with house-made sauce, or tangy pulled-pork sliders. If youre in the mood for something more substantial, its marinated pub steak topped with a garlic and blue cheese compound butter or sophisticated truffle oil, brie, apple, and arugula pizza should fit the bill. Parking comes at a premium in this hood, so families with kids or anyone trying to escape the rain will be happy to see the large parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. Call to order take-out, or arrange for delivery via its website.

Anyone craving Mexican food in the Kent Station neighborhood can head to Agave Cocina & Cantina, where the covered patio is equipped with socially distanced tables, a fireplace, and heaters. Agaves large menu of tasty Mexican dishes is accompanied by an impressive sipping-tequila menu (offering 150-plus choices all the way up to the luxurious Gran Patrn Burdeos Aejo Tequila, famous for its ultra-smooth finish). Keep Agave Cocina in mind if youre in the mood for weekend brunch with a spicy twist. Vegetarians will appreciate the Omelet Vegetariano, filled with grilled veggies and covered with a creamy roasted-poblano hollandaise sauce. If youre sticking close to home these days, Agave has you covered, too. Its popular Dinner for 4 to-go bundles combine large portions of classic dishes, like shredded beef enchiladas or chicken tamales, with plenty of chips, rice, beans, and a choice of salsa (warning to rookies the house-made tomatillo salsa doesnt lack for heat!). You can add beer, wine, or a margarita kit to your to-go order, too.
