Strong winds in New Plymouth toppled trees across roads, tossed trampolines through the air and ripped roofing iron from buildings on Tuesday.
The gusting southerlies also cut the electricity supply to many Taranaki towns but service was expected to be restored by late afternoon, Powerco's website said.
Traffic ground to a halt on roads around New Plymouth as trees came crashing down across the lanes.
SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
Strong winds whipped up white caps on the Tasman Sea off the coast of New Plymouth on Tuesday.
Firefighters were kept busy attending multiple call-outs around the city, including uprooted trees, securing loose roofing iron and assisting with trampolines and outdoor furniture that had become airborne.

New Plymouth district councillor and journalist Gordon Brown was conducting an interview at a business on Connett Rd, Bell Block, about 10.20am when the gale force winds tore the roof off a nearby building.
There was this almighty noise, so I just turned around and the roof was being peeled back like a can of sardines, Brown said.
SIMON O'CONNOR/STUFF
Strong winds have caused damage across the Taranaki region on Tuesday.
It was pretty spectacular. I have never seen anything like it.
Senior station officer Jason Crowe, of New Plymouth fire brigade, said the first calls came in about 9am and continued through the day.
It has been a busy day, Crowe said.
SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
New Plymouth district councillor Gordon Brown witnessed the wind tear off a large piece of roof from the Toll building in Bell Block on Tuesday.
The hefty work load required an additional off-duty crew to be called in and the assistance from the New Plymouth West volunteer brigade.
By 2.45pm there had been 22 call-outs, Crowe said.
SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
Firefighters work to secure loose roofing on the gym at New Plymouths Spotswood College as strong winds battered Taranaki on Tuesday.
It has been to a mix of everything from loose roofing iron at commercial and residential properties, to fallen trees, and flying trampolines, as well as having to deal with our usual jobs such as alarm activations, medical incidents and motor vehicle accidents.
Crowe said a car had been significantly damaged when a tree fell on it in Brooklands.
SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
A trampoline was blown into some bushes on South Road, State Highway 45, on Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters also had to secure the roof on the gym at Spotswood College and the flashing on another building at the school.
Theere was also a afternoon callout to The Warehouse on Courtney St in New Plymouth where a large piece of roof flashing had come loose.
With the strong winds forecast to continue, Crowe advised property owners to check around their sections and secure any loose items like outdoor furniture and trampolines to avoid them becoming flying projectiles.
At 7.15pm, senior station officer Nick Hackling said they had attended a job on Cook St helping remove a solar hot water system, damaged by the wind, from the roof, as well as helping a couple of neighbours on Hine St with lifting roofs.
Leighton Keith/Stuff
Contractors have been working to clear a tree that blocked the southbound lane of SH3, Welbourn, around 6.50am on Tuesday.
Police were first called to State Highway 3, Welbourn, just outside the city, around 6.50am after a fallen tree partially blocked the southbound lane.
Traffic heading out of New Plymouth was redirected past Highlands Intermediate and down Junction St while northbound traffic was flowing at a reduced speed of 30 kilometres per hour.
Contractors worked with a digger and wood chipper to clear the debris.
Leighton Keith/Stuff
A tree also came down at the intersection of Frankley Rd and Waimea St around 7.45am.
Officers were also alerted to a tree blocking the westbound lane at the intersection of Frankley Rd and Waimea St, Frankleigh Park, around 7.45am.
Another tree fell at the intersection of SH3 and Smart Road, Waiwhakaiho, around 11.30am, causing traffic to back up as contractors worked to clear it.
Around midday, the two northbound lanes of State Highway 3, Burgess Park, were blocked by another falling tree and police had to direct traffic at the scene while it was cleared.
SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
High winds saw yet another tree fall on a New Plymouth road the second on SH3, near Burgess Park, within hours.
The winds also saw the area around New Plymouths clock tower closed off for public safety as the gusts had shaken one of the window fittings loose, a New Plymouth District Council media spokesman said.
In the evening, Hackling said they were called to assist with the glass in the clock tower, but had to be careful with their staff using ladders in the high winds.
Power was cut to 30 properties in Rhotu about 4.40am but had been restored by mid-afternoon, while 374 properties in Warea were also without electricity after the supply was cut at 11.54am but it was expected to be restored by 4.54pm.
SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
The winds shook one of the clock towers window fittings loose.
At 7pm in New Plymouth, 1792 properties were without power in Westown with a scattering of other outages in the district.
Earlier in the day, 217 properties in Okato were without electricity, but was later restored.
SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff
The Wind Wand bends in Tuesday's wind.
Metservice issued a severe weather warning for Taranaki on Monday forecasting southerly gales between 9am-9pm on Tuesday.
Gusts were expected to reach 120kmh in exposed places, and that the strongest winds were expected north of Taranaki Maunga.

KEY POINTS
The RPG survival title "Valheim" allows players to craft weapons and tools and build houses. Some players are having a hard time building walls and roofs because they often collapse. For those looking for ways to properly reinforce their walls and roofs in "Valheim," this tutorial guide might come in handy.
"Valheim" features colors in its building mechanics, and players must understand this before starting anyconstruction. During construction, players will notice that materials have corresponding colors depending on their structural integrity. For instance, blue is the color of the tile when it is placed next to the ground, which means it is a foundational material.
Among the colors, blue means it is the strongest, followed by green, yellow, orange and then red. The color green indicates good construction, while red means that it lacks the adequate support necessary for its structural integrity.
A brutal exploration and survival game for 1-10 players, set in a procedurally-generated purgatory inspired by viking culture. Battle, build, and conquer your way to a saga worthy of Odins patronage! Photo: Coffee Stain Official YouTube Channel
How To Reinforce Roofs
The best way to reinforce the roof in "Valheim" is by using four-meter log poles. Crafting these log poles is easy. Players only needa Core Woodthatcan be obtained from chopping down Pine Trees. Players need to position these four-meter log poles under the roofs to make them a lot stronger and prevent them from crashing.
"Valheim"Walls Keep Breaking? How To Reinforce Walls
It is important to note that in construction, structural stability and integrity are crucial. When creating walls, players should consider that the further the walls to the foundation, the weaker they become. A piece connected to the ground can support four pieces if players are particular about structural integrity. However, those who want to extend the structure further have two choices to ensure that they keep the structure strong. One is by adding foundational support at the base of the walls or by reinforcing the walls with beams.
Construction or building your house is fun, but it also requires a lot of time and resources. Players must build strongstructures so that they do not waste their time repairing them every now and then. With the proper material, tools and right amount of reinforcement, "Valheim" players can make sure that their structures can last long.

During our wet cool, winter in Oregon we have one plant that flourishes, especially in shady areas, and thats moss.
Moss is a non-vascular flowerless plant from the taxonomic division Bryophyta that spreads by vegetative growth and by shooting out spores. Mosses do not have phloem tissue like vascular plants that carries food and nutrients from the photosynthetic surfaces back to the roots and other parts of the plant. That is partly why you dont see large free-standing mosses.
Mosses move metabolites and other nutrients between cells and within cells primarily by osmosis and diffusion. Understanding this will help you to realize that using most herbicides that are translocated through the phloem tissue of plants will not work on moss.
So, knowing a little about mosses will help us to understand how to control this difficult invader in some areas of our landscape and on our roofs and sidewalks.
Keep in mind these flowerless plants thrive on moisture and shade and generally do not grow or spread well in sunny, dry sites. This is the reason why the best cultural control that will help you to control moss in your landscape and on buildings is to allow sunlight to reach lawns, sidewalks and roofs of houses for much of the day to dry out surfaces.
If moss has invaded your lawn over the years, it is important to remember that moss does not kill the grass in your lawn. Poor growing conditions such as shade, poor drainage, poor fertility or compacted soil lead to the weakened state. These conditions, not the moss, cause the grass to die out.
To reduce moss from a lawn, first focus on improving those cultural conditions for growing grass. Most of the moss will disappear if you do the following:
Another way to control moss is to use chemical products like iron sulfate and ammonium sulfate. These products are to be mixed with water and sprayed on the lawn or roof to contact the moss. They should be used near the end of winter during a dry spell so persistent rain will not wash them off before they burn the moss.
Be advised that the iron products can stain concrete surfaces. These products should be used in combination with the cultural steps to improve the lawn mentioned above when using in the landscape.
After burning the moss to a yellow color in a lawn, it is important to use a dethatching rake or dethatching machine again to remove the dead moss. You can compost the dead moss but be advised that the moss may contain spores that could start new moss where you use the compost. I have never had an issue with this when using the compost in a sunny location.
Another formulation of moss control product is ammoniated soap of fatty acids. You will see this listed on the label of the product under the active ingredient. This formulation is softer on plants so is a good choice when using moss control around shrubs and flower beds. It is also a non-staining product that can be used on cement surfaces.
Remember that waiting to near the end of our rainy season is a good time for controlling moss in your lawn, gardens, sidewalks and roofs. This keeps harmful products from being washed down our gutters into the street and out to our waterways.
Make control applications on lawns with granular products when surfaces are still moist following a rain, but there is no heavy rain in the forecast for at least a week. Spray applications of moss control products on lawn or hard surfaces need to be made when the surface is dry and going to be dry for a week.
You can also keep cement surfaces clean using a power washer but that can cause pitting of the cement so be careful.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ)-- With the on-and-off snow Central Oregon has been experiencing, it increases the chance of ice dams forming around your roof.
Ice dams are a wall of ice that forms at the edge of homes' roofs, typically at the gutters. Just as the name entails, the ice creates a barrier to the melting snow and prevents it from properly draining into the gutters.
According to experts, if you leave snow sitting on top of an ice dam, water can seep inside your home and cause thousands of dollars of damage.
It can lift the shingles on your roof. It can cause a lot of damage by that ice continuing to melt and refreeze in that one spot," Paiton Radinovich, mitigation coordinator for Central Oregon Disaster Restoration, said Monday.
Homeowners will start to see water leaking into the interior of their house. Usually, theyll see dripping down their side of the wall, or theyll see some dripping on the ceiling.
Recessed lighting, skylights and complex roof designs increase the chances of an ice dam developing on your roof.
Radinovich added, This is definitely the time of year that we start seeing an increase in ice dams, especially with it being really cold, snowing and then water melting on your roof and refreshing again.
So what kind of prevention steps can you take to help prevent the build-up of ice on your roof?
Radinovich suggested that removing snow buildup before it starts melting and leaking down is key to preventing ice dams.
She also mentioned what can happen to roofs that are repeatedly being exposed to refreezing water.
When you start seeing some water intrusion," she said, "be sure to call someone and get someone out there to help stabilize the area so that youre not having additional issues later on with mold growth or rot from the water sitting there and doing what water does to houses when it doesnt get taken care of.

On February 15, Iran-backed Shia militia groups in Iraq fired a barrage of missiles a minimum of 14 at an American base in Erbil, Iraq. One contractor was killed and five were wounded; one American soldier was wounded. That no American was killed was a matter of luck, it seems. The U.S. reaction has so far been verbal only. Secretary of State Antony Blinken released a statement, saying We are outraged by todays rocket attack in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. . . . I have reached out to Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to discuss the incident and to pledge our support for all efforts to investigate and hold accountable those responsible. Those accountable are sitting in Tehran, and this is a key test of the Biden administration: If the United States reacts with words alone, the Biden administration will show the Iranians that such attacks are cost-free. The only lesson that Irans leaders will learn from such a response is that the Biden administrations desire to return to nuclear diplomacy will permit Iran to put American lives at risk whenever it wishes. If the U.S. reaction is to strike at the Iraqi Shia group that claimed the attack, it will once again play Tehrans game. Iran is pleased to allow those proxies to absorb American strikes while it acts with impunity. An Iraqi Shiite group calling itself Saraya Awliya al-Dam, which means Guardians of Blood Brigade, said it conducted the attack. Which Iran-backed militia actually carried out the attack is largely irrelevant because Iran controls them all. Proof can be found in the way such militia attacks appear to have been called off by Iran in October. Back then, Iran seemed to fear that if an American were killed and then-President Trump reacted against Iran strongly, Trump might gain popularity and win reelection. Attacks by Iranian-backed Shia groups in the pre-election period did not fall off because they ran out of ammunition or decided to take vacations; there is no other explanation except decisions made in Tehran. In November, December, and January (especially around January 3, the one-year anniversary of the American killing of Quds force head Qasem Soleimani), the U.S. government expected the attacks might recommence. What followed was a successful effort to deter Iran, especially after the one Iranian-backed attack in this period: the rocket attack on the U.S. Embassy in December. While American forces and diplomats in Iraq took great precautions to prevent injuries if attacked, the United States delivered clear messages to Iran both verbally and through the deployment of military force. The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was kept on station in the region after starting to return home, and there were regular B-52 flights over the Persian Gulf. It is in this context that Trump tweeted on December 23, two days after an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Some friendly health advice to Iran: If one American is killed, I will hold Iran responsible. Think it over. The messages were clear: If an Iranian proxy killed an American, the U.S. reaction would not target the proxy but would target Iran. What exactly that meant was kept ambiguous; Iran had to calculate risks. And the Iranian regime did so. From the election to the inauguration there was one attack, and after that December attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the Iranian proxies desisted. And to repeat, there is only one logical explanation for this: Tehran got the message and instructed them to desist. This background explains why the attack on Americans in Erbil is so important. Iran understood the messages from the United States prior to January 20, but what is the message now? Will we hold accountable those responsible, as Blinken said, or will we instead allow Iran to hide behind proxies it controls? If we do the latter, the message to Iran is that such attacks are acceptable and we can expect more of them. These are efforts to kill Americans, and by killing or wounding American servicemembers and contractors to drive the United States from Iraq. The Biden administration should instead adopt a policy of deterrence, warning Iran that it will be held accountable directly. That messaging, plus a clear willingness to carry through if need be, has worked. It did not reduce attacks to zero, but it significantly depressed their size and frequency because those must have been the orders from Tehran. Those orders can be sent to the Iraqi Shia militias once again. It all depends on what Tehran hears from Washington. If an American is killed by an Iranian-supported militia and the United States responds, does that mean the end of diplomacy or a wider war? It does not. The United States has a multitude of military options, some of which would clearly signal to Iran that we have no wish to escalate into a larger conflict but that we insist the Iranian regime stop trying to kill Americans or else. Thats the message the Biden administration should be sending this week.

Starting today, the Brooklyn Public Librarys Flatlands branch will be closed for one year while the buildings roof is replaced.
A short notice published on the Brooklyn Public Librarys website says the branch, located at 2065 Flatbush Avenue and Avenue P, will close today for a scheduled roof replacement and will reopen Winter 2022.
The Flatlands branch has already been mostly closed for long stretches of the pandemic, though the return bookdrop was occasionally operational in recent months. Many branches across the borough remain fully closed, while 39 other locations currently offer lobby service, in which patrons have access to branch lobbies for quick transactions.
A spokesperson for Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) said the roof project would cost $2 million and will be paid for with city capital funding.
The current roof leaks, and has long outlived its lifecycle, the spokesperson said.
An old post on the library systems capital projects tracker pinned the project cost at $4.1 million, with funding provided by the City Council and former mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, but the spokesperson said that information was no longer accurate.
The previous cost estimate, the spokesperson explained, included repair work on HVAC, fire safety, and building management systems that BPL will instead complete with existing resources. No private donations will be used to fund the project.
The renovation, which will be managed by the citys Department of Design and Construction, had been placed on hold during the pandemic, the spokesperson said, but the citys budget office is now allowing work to begin.
BPL also said the new roof will not be a green roof akin to the one installed on a Windsor Terrace library in 2017.
This is the second long-term closure for the Flatlands branch in recent years; in 2019, the building was closed for four months to accommodate the construction of a new conference room. The 6,000-square-foot Flatlands branch building was built in 1955, and was previously renovated in 1985 and 1987.
An email about the closure from local Council Member Farah Louis said that branch staff will continue virtual programs, attend community board meetings, and conduct virtual outreach to schools and community organizations. It also said materials on hold that are not picked up at the close of business today would be available for pick up at the Mill Basin branch at 2385 Ralph Avenue.
Louis email said BPL would not station one of its mobile bookmobile trucks at the site, and directed residents instead to the Mill Basin, Clarendon, and Paerdegat branches, which currently offer pickup and return services.
