Seamlessly nestled in Sonoma County's rolling hills, the new Montage Healdsburg beckons with a bucolic setting, sumptuous accommodations, mouthwatering menus and a whole lot more.
A fire pit-equipped outdoor patio at Montage Haldsburg
The moment our plane touches down at Sonoma County Airport, my stress level plummets. And when our car rolls up to the brand-new Montage Healdsburg resortonly a 15-minute drive awayany lingering anxiety from the week disappears completely.
Rooms come with stunning views of the Alexander Valley
Located in the heart of Sonomas wine country, just minutes from Healdsburgs charming downtown area, the lush property is rife with eye candyvine-covered hills, clear blue skies and historic grovesand although new, it looks like it has been there for generations. The subtle contemporary architecture by design partners Glazier Le Architects and Delawie Architects fits into the landscape so well, its tough to locate the 130 bungalow-style guest rooms dotted across the 258-acre retreat.
The hotels gorgeous open-plan lobby
After arriving to our stunning suite via golf cart, we take a moment to soak in the gorgeous design and seemingly endless views. The suitedesigned masterfully with every detail considered by EDG Designhas a roomy living room and bedroom, two bathrooms, two showers (one outdoor, one indoor), a beckoning bathtub, two enormous flat-screen televisions, and last but certainly not least, a massive deck, complete with a fire pit and outdoor furniture. Because we arrived later in the day, we decide to take advantage of our cozy accommodations and order room service. We share the colorful Hazel Hill salad with perfectly prepared wagyu, a half chicken topped with black truffle jus, and the most delicious pommes frites. It is divine.
Bathrooms at the resort include deep-soaking tubs and luxe products from California-based GlossModerne.
The next day, we walk down the hill to Hazel Hill restaurant for a hearty alfresco breakfast before heading to the on-property Compass Sports. The planto ride electric bikes throughout the areais squashed by my lack of athletic prowess, so instead we drive into downtown Healdsburg for strolling and boutique-hopping. Post-shopping, we drive to the highly recommended Dry Creek General Store for delicious sandwiches, devoured on the porch while gazing out at vineyards. We then head back to the hotel for a private wine tasting experience at Hazel Hill with beverage manager and sommelier Petra Polakovicova. Sitting outside overlooking the fields and mountains, Polakovicova presents wines from labels led by female makers, including a delicate bubbly ros by Poe. I wont soon forget how its sparkling pinot meunier electrified my palate.
Interiors by EDG Design have a relaxed, elegant feel.
Afterward, a quick dip in the pool is the perfect pick-me-up before getting ready for dinner back at Hazel Hill. The attentive and friendly service complements the food beautifully. We enjoy some gorgeous appetizers (oysters and bigeye tuna with blood orange, Sicilian pistachio and shiso) before digging into the delicately plated mains (Liberty Farms duck breast with rhubarb, turnips and pistachio, and Mishima filet mignon with duck fat potato puree, baby carrot, cipollini onion and sauce au poivre). The dessertcoconut tapioca pearls with tropical fruit salsa, black sesame and mango sorbet, and a chocolate crunch bar with hazelnut cookie, Valrhona chocolate and Frangelico ice creamis divine. Post-meal, we enjoy some stargazing around the fire pit from our private patiothe perfect end to a perfect day.
The farm-to-table fare at Hazel Hill is perfectly in line with its setting.
Our last day is lazily spent enjoying meals at Hazel Hill and cocktails at Scout Field Bar before some downtime at the pool. I bring my Kindle, but find myself distracted by the dazzling viewall I see are trees, water and sky. I sneak away to Spa Montage, which offers a wide variety of facial and body treatments. I opt for the 90-minute Harvest Honey Infusion Ritual, an indulgent exfoliating, nourishing and relaxing treatment that uses locally harvested honey and other delicious ingredients. The experienceluxurious, wellness-focused and locally mindedencapsulates the entire resort. Although Im sad to say goodbye, I know well be back before long. Standard rooms from $995 per night, deluxe rooms from $1,145 per night, guest house from $12,000 per night
Located next to Spa Montage, the resorts main pool has stunning views of the property.

Gunnison County commissioners on Tuesday passed a resolution authorizing the continued use of both all-terrain and off-highway vehicles on a segment of road approaching Lead King Loop, while reaffirming the importance of a multilateral process building toward a permit or reservation system that would limit motorized recreation in the backcountry near the town of Marble.
While the commissioners did not enact a de facto moratorium on OHV, ATV and UTV traffic on the 1.5-mile segment of county road leading to the popular loop on Forest Service land as some area residents were hoping the discovery three weeks ago of a language error in a county resolution governing the road served to elevate the issue, according to a woman who has been advocating for better management of surging motorized traffic on Lead King Loop.
Lead King Loop is 13 miles of rugged road running through White River National Forest, accessing the town of Crystal and the historic Crystal Mill and skirting the edge of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. It is accessed via Marble a hamlet in the upper Crystal River Valley 28 miles from Carbondale using Gunnison County Road 3, which runs from the town boundary up to the top of Daniels Hill. At that point, the road hits a junction with Forest Service roads that form the loop.
White River National Forest in its 2011 travel-management plan designated its roads serving the loop as open to all motorized vehicles, including highway-legal cars and trucks, off-highway vehicles, dirt bikes, ATVs and UTVs.
State law prohibits OHVs on county roads unless a specific section of road is exempted from that ban by the county of jurisdiction. Gunnison County in 2015 passed a resolution applying that exemption to a portion of County Road 3. However, the resolution language defined the exemption as from the town limits at Beaver Lake to the bottom of Daniels Hill, a distance of approximately 0.7 of a mile. That description leaves a gap of approximately 0.8 of a mile to where the Forest Services jurisdiction actually begins.
Gunnison County commissioners this month introduced a draft resolution that would extend the exemption to the top of the hill, based on the understanding that the countys long-standing intent has been to allow OHVs on its segment of the road, due to the fact that the machines are legal once the road enters Forest Service jurisdiction. Commissioners were inundated with comments from concerned citizens who wanted stronger action taken to limit and, if necessary, temporarily ban OHV traffic on the road.
At a May 4 meeting, Commissioner Liz Smith proposed sunsetting the OHV allowance on the road at the end of the year, as a way to assure citizens that a long-term solution was in the works.
I have deep reservations in continuing this public access without some affirmation or sense that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I think a lot of people on the call are feeling that too, Smith said at the meeting, adding that she doesnt want to enable a problem if we cant get other stakeholders to really lean in to solve it.
A provision stating that the OHV exemption shall expire at midnight on Dec. 31 was included in the resolution passed Tuesday.
Smith was credited at Tuesdays meeting with reaching out to concerned residents. She also said she spoke with Forest Service officials and came away heartened that they are willing to continue working collaboratively toward an ultimate solution to the issue of overuse.
Its necessary to have that partnership with the Forest Service, she said, adding that she believes based on her conversations that a permit or reservation system could be implemented within two years.
Commissioner Jonathan Houck said he, too, spoke with White River National Forest officials. He said he noted to them that while data collection is important to justifying a cap on motorized use on Lead King Loop, it shouldnt have to take years and years. Other national forest jurisdictions have recently made rather quick pivots, when necessary, to deal with surging recreational use, Houck said.
Commissioner Roland Mason said the resolution gives the county, the town and the Forest Service the time to thoroughly investigate all the nuances of potential policy solutions to make sure that the best course of action is taken.
The resolution passed unanimously.
Over the past two months, Gunnison County and the town of Marble have committed funds to support increased Forest Service ranger patrols on Lead King Loop this summer, while the Gunnison County Sheriffs Office has also promised that a new deputy will be assigned to the area by August. Along with increased education directed at OHV users, officials are hoping that these interim steps will have a positive impact on the situation. They say that noise, dust and traffic on the narrow roads and damage to the landscape are prime concerns for local residents.
Teri Havens, who lives on Daniels Hill, has been a leading voice calling for policy changes to limit the environmental and quality of life impacts experienced as OHV traffic has been climbing over the past decade. She said that in all that time, she had never received a call back from a Gunnison County official, but she has recently had two conversations with Smith about the matter.
Prior to that, no one returned my calls, and honestly I dont know if anyone would have if we hadnt found this loophole, Havens said.
She said the discovery of the language deficiency in the countys OHV authorization got our foot in the door and forced a more serious discussion of the issue.
While acknowledging tough times ahead, she sounded an optimistic note in an email sent Monday to community members.
With an expected record number of visitors this summer and a scarcity of parking, it could be a challenging season, she wrote in an email to community members after the OHV issue. However, we believe our voices have been heard, and we are optimistic that all entities will be working together toward a management plan that will benefit both the community and the wilderness in the near future.
This story ran in the May 19 edition of The Aspen Times.

The Philadelphia skyline is seen at dusk in this photo from November 2020.
It's lights out in Philadelphia for several weeks this year as skyscrapers go dark at night in an effort to keep wayward migrating birds safe.
Owners and tenants of both commercial and residential buildings are being asked to turn off unnecessary indoor and outdoor lighting, or pull curtains or shades, from midnight to 6 a.m. through May 31, and again from Aug. 15 to Nov. 15, according to Bird Safe Philly.
The initiative is part of a national program that also takes place in more than 32 other cities, including New York, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago and Atlanta. This is the first year that Philadelphia has participated.
Bird Safe Philly, a coalition of several organizations including the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University and the Audubon Society, was created after thousands of migratory birds died after they collided with buildings in Philadelphia's Center City district on Oct. 2.
(MORE: Will Masks Be Required in Hurricane Shelters? It Depends)
Most migrating birds travel at night, using the stars and other clues to navigate. Artificial light can cause them to become disoriented, especially during cloudy or rainy weather, according to Bird Safe Philly.
Experts say that's exactly what happened in October.
Conditions were perfect for a heavy migratory flight and imperfect given that there was a low ceiling of clouds and rain, Jason Weckstein, associate curator of ornithology at Drexel's Academy of Natural Sciences, told the Associated Press. That in combination with Phillys bright city lights was a disaster for many fall migrant birds winging their way south.
It's not known how many birds die in building collisions during annual migrations, but a 2014 study led by researchers from the Smithsonian's Migratory Bird Center estimated that between 365 million and 988 million birds overall are victims of building collisions each year.
New York City Audubon estimates that between 90,000 and 230,000 birds are killed every year by flying into buildings in the city.
Besides artificial light being a danger, birds also often fly straight into windows and other glass.
The problem isn't new, but initiatives like the lights out programs and research by scientists have brought more attention to it in recent years.
We have specimens in the academys ornithology collection from a kill that happened when lights were first installed on Philadelphias City Hall tower in 1896, Weckstein said.

NEW YORK, May 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ --A majority (83%) of Americans believe that exposure to natural daylight is critical to their good health, according to a new survey. Yet the findings come at a time when Americans increasingly spend most of their time inside, underscoring the need for technologies that can simulate daylight indoors.
BrainLit, a health tech lighting company, commissioned the survey of 1,331 U.S. adults 18 years and older in May 2021 to gauge opinions around light as it pertains to health and workplace issues. The study revealed that 83% of respondents agree that natural daylight is important for good health, affecting things such as sleep cycles, mental focus, and worker productivity. However, there was lower awareness (39%) for the fact that natural daylight can be replicated through indoor lighting systems to improve health and wellbeing.
The disconnect is significant since most respondents reported spending a majority of their time indoors, with nearly half (49%) saying they are inside 12-23 hours each day. Government studies put the numbers even higher, revealing that most Americans now spend 93% of their lives indoors[1].
The survey's findings around light's impact on sleep were particularly telling. The pandemic and its quarantine measures have increased stress and changed sleep behaviors, fueling insomnia and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders[2] for many. The survey bore this out, with half (50%) of those under 35 years of age and nearly a third (32%) of those 35-54 reporting they are getting less sleep since the start of the pandemic.
"While the data suggests we should encourage people to spend more time outdoors, humanity has moved in the opposite direction in recent generations," said Niclas Olsson, CEO of BrainLit. "People need the health benefits of daylight, but life's circumstances don't always allow them to be outside. The good news is that BrainLit's personalized lighting can help those staying indoors by supporting the body's natural circadian rhythm, resulting in better sleep, health, and mental acuity."
At the same time, Americans prefer the benefits of natural light compared to alternative health and wellness remedies, according to the survey findings. More than half (56%) of all age groups agree that exposure to natural daylight helps them to sleep better, and 67% said that if they had not been sleeping well, they would rather find a natural solution to their sleep troubles than taking medication. Similarly, a majority of Americans (55%) would rather go outside to gain an energy boost during a stressful workday rather than drink a soda or cup of coffee.
The survey also found that a substantial number of Americans believe natural light can benefit cognitive and performance functions as well. For example, 59% of adults agree that children require natural light to learn, while 42% believe it can relieve symptoms of hyperactivity or ADD in children. For the elderly, respondents believe light can improve symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer's, with more than 42% of respondents agreeing. And two-thirds of adults (67%) believe natural light improves worker productivity.
Methodology
All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 1,331 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between May 10-11, 2021. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all US adults (aged 18+).

Changes in lighting technology mean that the future will see new lighting systems. Many places, especially businesses, will want better ways to manage their lighting; this saves energy and gives a business premise that additional charm. The light bulbs of today came in the 1880s during the times of Thomas Edison. Before those days, kerosene lamps dominated lighting systems. Though they provided utility, they lacked convenience and were uneconomical to some extent. Today, the world faces a similar issue, even though the lighting systems have cut down power bills for many people.
For most businesses today, closing and opening the lighting systems manually is no longer convenient. Current lighting methods are also becoming expensive due to the increased need for more lighting systems. The need for more convenience and control has pushed people to IoT lighting, which is poised to take over in the decade to come. In 2026, the intelligent lighting system will hit $4.5 billion and grow consistently throughout the 2020s.
Businesses want to make profits, one of the significant drivers of innovation. Many startups today are looking for better solutions to get the attention of the markets, and what better ways to do this than to offer efficient lighting systems that guarantee lower expenses. Many buildings are now installing the Building Management Systems (BMS), ensuring lights are off whenever no one is in the building. The lighting systems will also come in handy in rooms, which are not in use, helping businesses save a lot when it comes to electricity costs.
IoT is an intelligent system that eliminates the use of wires in buildings. The technology has extensive use of wireless switches, which removes the traditional wires connecting switches to the LED light bulbs. Bulbs and computers have a central connection to the companys internet network, giving an administrator the power to shut off any light after everyone has gone home. Intelligent lighting systems can also vary the LED bulbs brightness and even decide the best times of the day where lighting is not necessary. Additionally, in the event of an issue in the wiring system, the administrator can have it fixed in record time. Wireless technologies can also tell whether some bulbs have reached their lifetime and provide ample time for replacements.
IoT has many potentials, which many are just discovering. The future uses in many commercial places of the technology include:
Asset tracking
IoT has the capabilities of sensing the exact position of an asset in a building. Precious assets in the workplace have special sensors. IoT can pick and relay critical information about the location to the administrators or the people trying to locate the goods at any time.
Indoor-based lighting positioning systems
The technology for position-lighting systems started in 2017 with the use of Bluetooth. Before the advancement of network-based wireless systems, Bluetooth technologies dominated, which connected various devices. In 2017, shoppers in some stores used a connection via Bluetooth devices to find their way around the stores. A shopper would connect their Bluetooth-enabled phone to another device placed strategically in the store to create a map to show them the location of various goods. The same technique is possible with IoT-based lighting systems, with faster results and better maps.
Tracking goods on store shelves to minimize expiry
IoT technologies can help deal with perishables when coupled with technologies that can monitor humidity and expiry dates of different products. When a good reaches its expiry date, or conditions suitable for storage change, smart devices can help send alerts for proper action from the store owners.
Whether you want to cut down your electricity cost or want timely updates on the nature of your goods, IoT-based lighting can achieve all that.
The future requires intelligent solutions like the phoenix lighting heavy duty LED used by mining, port and terminals, marine and governments, which can help in the current fight against climate change. Having intelligent systems in place will ensure lower power usage with that additional charm in the workplace when bulbs turn on and off on their own.

YOU WOULDNT illuminate your den with a single spot light. And you would certainly think twice before painting your bedroom a distinctly untranquil bright red. But as soon as homeowners step outside their back doors, sometimes even the most discriminating lose their well-honed sense of aesthetics. Its important to think of an outdoor space with the same logic as an indoor one, said New York designer Christina Nielsen, who recently redid her own patio.
Lighting should be layered, your plantings should soothe you and the dcor should be as thoughtfully considered as your living rooms. In these five stories, landscape pros and interior designers right a full wheelbarrows worth of patio, deck and garden wrongs with strategies that will have your neighbors asking if youll tackle their yard next.
For centuries, Japanese priests have reaped the benefits of contemplative plots. Now clients are asking landscape architects for gardens that, rather than relying on showy flowers, create a sanctuary that soothes sensuallyvia sound, scent and movement, among other factors. Heres how they do it.
Many of us upgraded our outdoor spaces last spring and summer: sectionals, fire pits, the works. But few of us invested in well-designed and -executed lighting. Designers advise that we should follow the same concept for illumination outdoors as we do for lighting indoors: careful layering. We rounded up the best ways to elevate your yard with pro-quality lights, from sconces and LED chandeliers to articulating floor lamps and bulbs recessed into steps.

These kinds of upgrades can start with simple things like installing task lighting in kitchens to accommodate fading eyesight and multi-height countertops to allow people of all abilities to both stand and sit while working in the kitchen, investing in nonslip tiles and grab bars in bathrooms, and relocating select electrical outlets to be 18-inches to 24-inches high, up from the more typical 12 inches off the floor to make them more accessible. Bigger changes can include enlarged doorways to allow for wheelchair access or a walker and adding ramps to eliminate stairs.
Dr. Rodney Harrell, the vice president for Family, Home and Community at AARP, says intentional planning to create an ideal space to age in place can be started at any time.
When were not planning ahead we need to react quickly, said Dr. Harrell, who added that the best homes integrate universal design elements that can accommodate life for aging, but also unexpected illness, injury or disability. The vast majority of people want to stay in their homes as they age, and most homes in this country arent designed to allow that to happen.
There are a growing number of resources that can help in this planning process.
AARP recently introduced HomeFit, a free augmented reality app on iOS that can scan a room and suggest improvements to help turn a house into a lifelong home, free from safety and mobility risks. It is an extension of the organizations extensive HomeFit Guide, which is available online.
There are also certified aging-in-place specialists, a wide range of professionals including remodelers, designers, architects and occupational therapists, who can recommend modifications to help people live independently in their home. This designation was developed in 2002 by the National Association of Home Builders in collaboration with AARP and other experts. Specialists can be searched by state at nahb.org, which offers a three-day certification program.
Even the smallest safety updates can potentially be lifesaving.
Ted Porter, a co-chair for the Design for Aging Committee for the New York City chapter of the American Institute of Architects says the process of making an apartment or home aging-friendly can be relatively easy, inexpensive and done gradually over time.
