Although Kit Chua and her husband had lived in their Chicago home for several years, shed never set up her home office properly. Once the pandemic hit, and Ms. Chua, an education consultant, was forced to work from home, where her husband was also working and their two daughters, ages 9 and 12, were engaged in remote school, it became clear that she needed a viable office setup.

When Ms. Chua, 46, hired interior designer Alice Benjamin to help design her office last spring, she realized that there were other spaces in the home that also needed attention. Our living and dining room had become the kids space over the years, says Ms. Chua. It can be pretty stressful to have the biggest and best space in your home filled with kids stuff especially during a pandemic. Ms. Benjamin created a plan in which the tucked-away family room was transformed into a study and hang-out zone for the girls while the dining and living room got a dramatic refresh. The overall project cost roughly $250,000.

Ms. Benjamin took cues from commercial workspaces for the design of the girls area where she incorporated rectangular booths fitted with cushions. The kids each have one where they can stretch out or sit up and do their schoolwork at writing desks positioned in front, says Ms. Benjamin. Sconces illuminate the cocoon-like booths and charging stations ensure there is always a spot to plug in. Colorful cubbies nailed to the wall provide storage and the walls are covered in cloud wallpaper.

In the living room, a movie screen and projector were installed along with a custom sectional. We werent a big TV-watching family before Covid, says Ms. Chua. But now that we have such a nice screen, we watch a lot of shows and movies all together. Additionally, Ms. Chuas Peloton software hooks up to the projector and while in quarantine during the colder months, the family has been doing yoga. When the kids are home for remote school and I need to be their P.E. teacher, we do dance cardio, she says.

Ms. Chua says her office, equipped with a desk at which she can either sit or stand, is now her dream space. It has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a sliding ladder. To expand the workspace, Ms. Benjamin transformed the adjacent room into a room where Ms. Chua participates in podcasts and video conferences. Dry-erase paint turned the walls into a blank canvas that she uses to map out ideas; the girls also enjoy writing on the walls and doing school projects at the adjustable table in the room where they can spin on swivel stools.

London-based furniture suppliers, Arlo & Jacob, have notably jumped on the trend, and have recently released a gingham collection which could sit comfortably in any modern home, as their Buying and Merchandising Manager, Laura Barnard, shared: Gingham is a very confident upholstery choice, and rather than being too frilly its bringing attention to an interior.

If you are still not convinced that weve reached the end of ginghams frilly days, luxury interior designer Rebecca Hughes, Founder of Rebecca Hughes Interiors, further emphasized the versatility of this ever-enduring pattern.

She explained: Gingham is a big interior trend and personally I love how this simple pattern can change an interior scheme. Although gingham is nostalgic and traditional to many, it certainly doesnt have to be confined to country homes.

Alternatively, designer Sarah Peake, of the London-based Studio Peake also suggests interpreting gingham into your home through your curtains.

'One of my favorite places to use gingham in projects is on curtain linings,' she explains. 'If curtain linings are seen from outside through the window, it is lovely to use a contrast lining for that element of surprise, and ginghams work well with most patterns.'

Erin Hiemstra's cozy home office is a lesson in functional and stylish small-space design. The creative behind Apartment 34 transformed a snug 10-x-10-foot accessory dwelling unit in her backyard into her dream home office when the pandemic hit. We added the ADU to our yard months before quarantine, and I'm so thankful we did! she shares. I couldn't wait to create an elevated escape, especially as the rest of the house devolved into chaosit's not easy to get work done with a kindergartener.

She worked with California Closets to create a custom built-in desk that optimized the limited floor space, and had room leftover for a meditation corner. She went with gray herringbone floors from Cle Tile, a soft Roman Clay treatment on the walls for a texturized, plaster-like finish, and a dark, moody color palette for a modern and minimal look. I breathe a sigh of gratitude every time I step in here, she adds. I love that I can display my favorite treasures, and my husband is happy that my magazine collection is out of the house.

To re-create the look at home, Hiemstra swears by three design tips: Select a spot with great natural light to improve focus, invest in a comfortable chair, and carve out space for pieces that inspire you. Interior designer Shea McGee is all about function when designing a spaceespecially something as utilitarian as a home office. I always start by asking myself, How can I make this space as functional as possible? In her book, a comfortable chair, spacious desk, plenty of storage, and some degree of separation from the rest of your home are the building blocks of a successful home office.

Having a designated office or desk is important so that on some level, you can still leave work at the end of the day, she notes. If you're working with a multiuse space like a kitchen table or closet, she recommends investing in a comfy chair and adding luxe touches like a candle or flowers to make the space feel intentional.

As for home office design, McGee always aims to create an organized, relaxing atmosphere that's conducive to productivity. In her husband Syd's home office, for example, she went with a coat of calming navy paint, plenty of built-in storage, and personal touches like artwork, books, and greenery.

This staycation is kid friendly and the host provides coloring books, crayons, games and videos. The listing also teases that guests will receive a mystery special gift.

This Kansas City studio offers one bedroom and one bathroom and is located 5 to 10 minutes from downtown Kansas City.

The home is in walking distance to restaurants and bars, according to the Airbnb listing. And the space has a built-in scavenger hunt activity. The homes owners encourage visitors to check out some fun artifacts they found in the walls and attic while remodeling the space.

This quaint space, located about an hour north of Overland Park, is the perfect place to write, read, paint or just pause, according to its listing.

The carriage house is on a working farm complete with goats, horses, chickens and the worlds best not-so-mini-pig Dolores Claiborne.

The listing promises visitors they will hear coyotes howling at night and a choir of roosters in the morning.

The modest West Baltimore rowhouse, located a block from the now-razed childhood home of bandleader Cab Calloway, appears an unlikely epicenter of campaign contributions to Baltimore States Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby.

But 2103 Druid Hill Avenue is listed as the address of 10 people who donated $3,200 to Friends of Marilyn Mosby, her campaign committee.

None of the 10 is reported as the buildings owner in property tax records, while all of them are identified in Mosbys report to the State Elections Board as employees of the Baltimore City States Attorney Office.

In fact, only one, Janice Bledsoe, works for the SAO. The others range from an equity manager to an inspirational author, a sewer contractor, an events planner, an architect, a hospital association lobbyist and three attorneys.

The buildings owner, on the other hand, has never contributed to any political candidate, according to state elections records.

A similar scrambling of names, addresses and employers throughout Mosbys report makes it impossible to determine with certainty who exactly contributed to Baltimores top law enforcement officer last year:

Is the real donor the person listed as the contributor?

Or is the donor the person tied to the address listed, which in dozens of cases does not match the contributor named?

Or is the employer of record a hint of the actual giver?

The Brew has tried unsuccessfully to reach Mosby and her treasurer, Shariff J. Small, for explanations about the discrepancies found in the report.

While the amount of funds in question is not large (about $20,000), the degree of confusion and the apparent inaccuracies are striking.

As chair of the committee, Mosby vouched under the penalty of perjury that the information in the report is complete and accurate.

Most of the contributions were raised during a 40th birthday fundraiser held in January 2020 for Mosby at the Sangria Patio Bar. Suggested contributions ranged from guest ($40) to host ($1,400).

Several of the larger donations came from regular Mosby contributors such as Robert Harrington, the city plumbing contractor, whose $1,400 contribution was listed to the 2103 Druid Hill Avenue address, and P&J Contracting, whose $1,400 contribution was linked to a Mount Vernon law office rather than his northwest Baltimore office and yard.

Other oddities crop up in the report.

For example, Kevin Pfeffer, a $3,000 Mosby donor, is listed as residing at the Hanover, Md., address of Byron Deese, a Tuskegee University graduate who has given generously to Mosby and her husband, City Council President Nick Mosby, both Tuskegee alums, in the past.

Pfeffer is the president of CMDS, a drug management company, who last year recruited Bilal Ali, a former state delegate and ex-Mosby community liaison officer, as CMDS executive director.

Ali is also listed in the report as a $1,400 Mosby contributor, but not as a CMDS manager. Instead, he is identified as an employee of Coldspring Co., a construction contractor.

Outside of the unclear provenance of many Mosby donors, an examination of the report raises questions about how much money is in the states attorneys campaign coffers.

The Friends of Marilyn Mosby committee reported an ending cash balance (as of January 13, 2021) of $68,386.79. But Harbor Bank of Maryland, where the account is held, reported $49,263.18 nearly $20,000 less on the same date.

Almost always, campaign committees reconcile the two accounts, often to the last penny, in reports submitted to the State Board of Elections.

This last happened in Mosbys case in January 2019, when both the committee and the bank reported a cash balance of $53,401.21. Since then, the Harbor Bank account has lagged as much as $27,000 behind committees stated balance.

The Brew found several other recurring patterns in Mosbys latest report:

Employees and former SAO employees are linked to the addresses of longtime Mosby contributors:

SAOs Communications Director Zy Richardson, according to the report, contributed to Mosby through the Baltimore County address of a media services company whose CEO, Tyrone Taborn, earlier contributed $1,500 to Mosby.

Incoming City Councilman Antonio Glover, a former Mosby community liaison officer, contributed to Mosby under the address of ex-housing commissioner Daniel P. Henson. At the same time, three SAO employees used Glovers apartment building address to donate to Mosby.

SA Chief of Administration, Camille Blake Fall, contributed $40 to Mosby through Club Paradise, according to the campaign report. The owner of the West Baltimore bar previously donated more than $3,000 to Mosby.

SA Deputy Bledsoe (incorrectly listed as living as 2103 Druid Hill Avenue in the report) had her actual Baltimore address listed for contributions by two other individuals, one affiliated with the SAO.

Seemingly random people were used as campaign cutouts.

A donation linked to the Cockeysville address of the CEO of Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. is attributed to an electrician from Parkville. Last year, the electrician, Sekwan Merritt, received media attention when he sued the U.S. government for excluding him from the Paycheck Protection Program because of his criminal record.

Hairstylist Char Wilson is linked to the address of longtime lawyer-lobbyist Eric Bryant. Last year, Bryant managed Kweisi Mfumes 7th District Congressional race and is now Mfumes chief of staff.

2/19 UPDATE: Bryant tells The Brew, I dont have any knowledge of or relationship to Char Wilson.

DJ Quicksilva, also known as The Party KingPin, is listed as a Mosby contributor at an address associated with a former Pikesville businessman.

A $1,000 contribution listed to a Washington, D.C., attorney has the Bowie address of a public relations and branding expert who has a history of supporting Mosby (see below). Nicole Kirby is listed as the owner of both CarVer Communications and the Bowie property used as the address for attorney A. Scott Bolden.

Mosby contributors are listed by their first name, followed by the last name, a violation of Elections Board protocol of registering contributors by last name, then first name.

Listing contributors this way makes it difficult to compare Mosbys 2021 campaign report with her prior reports, which followed the last name, first name standard.

It also can add confusion to and diminish the transparency found in an online Elections Board search. Thats because the database is keyed to a last name, first name sequence.

The walls are coming down at Olsen Middle School in Dania Beach-- not the current school, but the old building, which was completed in 1954 and has sat unused for three decades, an eyesore fenced off from the public.

The demolition started Friday, and should be finished in about a month, according to Broward County Public School officials. The space will be turned into a park.

"We see the walls, we se the roof of a structure that was built in the 50s, and it is because of our unwavering commitment that those walls are coming down today," said Valerie Harris, the principal of Olsen Middle School.

A small crowd applauded her at a ceremony Friday afternoon.

The school district allocated $800,000 from its SMART bond program to get the demolition done. Across the district, however, dozens of the district's other renovation projects are way behind schedule, including new air conditioning systems that need to be installed and new cafeterias that need to be constructed.

Broward Superintendent Robert Runcie said that "When we started out, back in 2014, the thought was that we'd do roof maintenance work. Now, we're doing roof replacement on probably 90% of the roofs we have in the county."

He said the surface area of all the roofs the districts is replacing is equal to the pavement on the entire length of I-595. The bond programs price tag jumped from $800 million to $1.4 billion.

"That's very different than the original estimates that we had back in 2014," Runcie said. "When we award these projects, they're being done within budgets that we grant, but those are estimates."

"Those arent the real numbers of the scopes of the projects were dealing with, so I think the criticism that it's taking far longer than everyone expected is fair."

Some of the renovation projects, such as those at Stranahan and Blanche Ely High Schools, are years overdue. Others, Runcie said, are delayed by design.

For example, the plan to renovate Northeast High School morphed into a plan to build two new classrooms, so it's taken more time. The public can track each project on the school districts website.

Runcie says all the projects will be done by 2025. They had originally been scheduled for completion this year.

The sight of San Diego's rapidly vanishing Mission Valley stadium now has a companion piece downtown, where demolition crews have scraped away the facade of the once-iconic Horton Plaza mall, rendering it unrecognizable in some spots.

Demolition work has dramatically altered the site of the former mall that helped to anchor the revitalization of San Diegos downtown and Gaslamp Quarter.

The work is being done to make way for a new $330 million high-tech office campus and lifestyle center called the Campus at Horton, much of which will utilize the bones of Horton Plaza. Developers expect the final site to boast 700,000 square feet of office space and 300,000 square feet of retail space, including both restaurants as well as shops.

Good news for commuters: The Campus at Horton will retain Horton Plaza's parking garage, enough spaces for 2,200 drivers to park.

Horton Plaza originally opened to the public in 1985, housing a movie theater, Macys and other department stores, and restaurants.

The glory, the glamour and the glitz it brought to San Diego, Oscar Carlson told NBC 7 last summer when the demolition began. We lived in Oceanside when it opened, but we came down frequently just for the experience.

SkyRanger 7 captured a bird's eye view -- through some fog -- of the progress of the demolition at SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley on Jan. 8, 2021.

Horton Plaza's unique architecture distinguished it from other malls in the county. The Los Angeles Times even called it a landmark of urban design.

Developers hope the new project will attract Silicon Valley technology companies to San Diego, with 3,000 and 4,000 new workers employed at the Campus at Horton. The project is expected to be completed by early next year.
