‘I was frozen in fear’: Woman testifies of sexual abuse by Maxwell and Epstein when she was 14 – The Spokesman-Review

    - December 2, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Julie K. Brown and Ben Wieder Miami Herald

NEW YORK She met Ghislaine Maxwell while eating ice cream with her friends at a summer arts camp in Michigan.

At 14, Jane had just suffered the loss of her father; her family had also lost their home. They moved into a small pool house in Palm Beach, Florida. They were struggling financially, and Janes mother was unavailable, lost in her own mental anguish.

That was when Maxwell introduced Jane that summer to Jeffrey Epstein, a wealthy financier who had built a chalet at the Interlochen Center for Arts, where he had studied music as a kid growing up in Brooklyn.

From that chance meeting two decades ago, Janes life would turn into a nightmare that would last for years, according to federal prosecutors.

Jane who is using a pseudonym to protect her privacy took the witness stand Tuesday in Manhattan federal court in Maxwells sex-trafficking trial, testifying that the British socialite both participated in and facilitated Janes sexual abuse, starting when Jane was 14.

Epstein promised to help Jane and her mother, she said. He paid for Janes voice lessons and later, sent her to a prestigious performing arts school in New York. He bought her clothes, she added, and told her he would use his connections in the entertainment world to help her become a singer and actress.

I can make things happen you just have to be ready for it, Epstein said one day, as he took her by the hand at his Palm Beach mansion, led her into a poolside cabana, then dropped his pants. He pulled her on top of him as he masturbated, she testified.

I was frozen in fear, she said, wiping tears from her eyes with a tissue. I had never seen a penis before I was terrified and felt gross and ashamed.

She testified she was afraid to tell her mother, who suffered from depression and was encouraging Jane to take advantage of Epstein and Maxwells generosity.

She was enamored with the idea that these wealthy, affluent people took an interest in me, she told the jury.

From then on, Maxwell and other Epstein assistants would help arrange Janes transportation to his Palm Beach home every 10 days or so, and later Jane made trips on Epsteins private plane to his other homes in New York and New Mexico.

I just felt my heart sinking into my stomach, she said, her voice cracking, when recalling how she was summoned into Epsteins bedroom for sex when she was 15 and staying in a guest room at his New Mexico ranch.

After that particular trip, Jane was scheduled to fly home to return to school on a Monday. But because she was 15 and had no drivers license or other identification she couldnt get on the plane, she said. She called Maxwell in a panic, and it was Maxwell who helped her get on a plane to fly home, Jane said.

The most painful testimony came when Jane described in excruciating detail how Epstein forced sex upon her, even when it was painful.

The abuse soon devolved into orgies, with Maxwell and other young women, on almost a regular basis, Jane testified. Epstein would have intercourse with her while Maxwell fondled her.

Jane said it happened so often that it became almost routine.

Where did you touch his body? prosecutor Alison Moe asked.

Ev..verywhere, Jane said, choking back tears.

Jane finally told a school guidance counselor about the abuse and later, her brothers and sister but she never told authorities. It continued until she was 18, she said.

Initially, I felt special. I didnt have anyone to look out for me, she said.

But the false sense of security she felt with Epstein and Maxwell gave way to low self-esteem and fear. At one point she contemplated harming herself.

But she escaped after landing a role in a television show and moved to Los Angeles. Epstein continued to call her, and she continued to travel with him from time to time until she was 22, when she fell in love and got engaged.

Jane stopped returning his calls, and Epstein became angry, calling her ungrateful and threatening to cut off her mother, who had been allowed to live in one of his New York apartments.

Moe kept turning Janes recollections back to Maxwell in an effort to emphasize her role in facilitating the sexual encounters.

The witness testified that Maxwell would often lead her to the massage room, and that both Maxwell and Epstein would direct her to do sexualized massages.

But Jane couldnt recall how many times Maxwell participated in the abuse or how often she helped set it up.

She was foggy on dates, and admitted that there were more times that Epstein abused her than Maxwell did.

Jane the first of four victims scheduled to testify in the case also related that she filed a civil lawsuit against Maxwell after Epsteins death and received a $5 million settlement in exchange for dropping the suit.

Maxwells lawyer, Laura Menninger, was far from sympathetic after hearing Janes story.

You waited 20 years before you reported it? Menninger scoffed.

Jane explained that she never went to authorities because she didnt want to relive the trauma she experienced and feared it would become public and harm her career. She didnt talk to the FBI until 2019, when prosecutors in the Southern District of New York began investigating Epstein, and arrested him on sex-trafficking charges in July of that year.

Epstein died a month later; his death in his New York jail cell was ruled a suicide by hanging.

The FBI continued to investigate the case, and Maxwell was indicted on sex charges in July 2020.

Menninger continues her cross-examination Wednesday. Three other victims are scheduled to testify against Maxwell during the trial, which is expected to last as long as six weeks.

This $21 million mansion in Toronto is the definition of a trophy home – blogTO

    - December 2, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

The listing describes 25 Country Lane as a "trophy home"and it is no participation award-type trophy home this place is the Olympic gold medal of trophy homes.

    The family room.

Listed for $21,000,000, this mansion is everything you could dream of and more ... but then again it should be for that price.

    The living room.

The design and build was completed by the builder Roy Masoumi, from Doran Design Build.

The dining room with a wine display.

The result is a stunning 12,422-square-foot timeless mansion that offers state-of-the-art wellness and entertainment amenities.

The home theatre with starry lights and a full sound system.

The newly built 2020 home boasts luxury things like a salt swimming pool with water features and a hot tub, heated driveway and garages,a multi-use sports court, a Rosehill wine cellar, a California-style four seasons kitchenand oh so much more.

A sitting room overlooking the garden.

The main floor of the home is open concept with soaring ceilings, tons of natural light and grand principal rooms perfect for living and entertaining.

    The front entrance.

In fact, the main hallway is so large it looks like a hotel lobby.

The kitchen has two dishwashers, two warming drawers, four ovens and walks-out to the back garden.

The main kitchen is classic and comes with all the Miele appliances as well as a servery room and a three-door refrigerator because this kitchen means business.

    The four seasons kitchen.

But as mentioned there's also an additional kitchen that works as an indoor/outdoor kitchen with a BBQ, pizza oven and a snow melt system.

    The primary bedroom ensuite bathroom.

The mansion has five bedrooms and 10 bathrooms so you could use a different bathroom every day of the week and still have some left over if you felt so inclined.

The wet bar has dishwasher drawers and a bar fridge.

In the basement there's a media room, a mirrored gym with a steam room and rec room with a wet bar.

An outdoor seating area with a fireplace.

In addition to all the luxury inside the home, there's plenty to get excited about outside.

The backyard has been professionally landscaped and designed.

The pool looks like it belongs ata resort in the Maldives.

The tennis court could also be used as a basketball court and more.

The tennis court is pristine and the cedar wood cabana looks nicer than some actual homes.

A view of the back of the house.

And if all that wasn't enough Country Lane is one of the few non-traffic streets in the Bridle Path neighbourhood so it's extra quiet and private.

An aerial shot of the backyard.

But for most of us this home is just something to look at because it's really the 0.1% who can afford a home like this.

The gym walks out to the backyard.

That being said it's still cheaper than Drake's house and, in my opinion, much nicer.

"Luxury isn't about price point. It's about an experience," listing agent Jane Zhang told blogTO.

The hotels new restaurant, Margie Haas, serves up contemporary alpine-American food (look for tableside raclette with all the fixings), while a collaboration bar with 10th Mountain Whiskey & Spirit Company prepares warming local drinks in the lobby.

    Provided by Gravity Haus

On the heels of Breckenridge and Vail hotel openings from the same company comes Gravity Haus Winter Park. The 38-room hotel and members club replaced the Sundowner before it and added its adventure-seekers touch, plus a new cafe, fitness area and snow cabanas. A-Frame Club, a brand new resort with midcentury-inspired structures, will open by February. Monograph raises $20M Series B to help designers and architects manage their operations – TechCrunch

    - November 16, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Monograph, a startup providing a cloud-based platform for architecture and design professionals to manage their projects, announced today that it has raised $20 million in its Series B funding round. New investor Tiger Global led the round, with participation from Tishman Speyer and existing investors Index Ventures and Homebrew Ventures.

The round brings Monographs total funding raised to $29.3 million since it was founded in 2019. Monograph last raised in May 2021, bringing in $7.4 million for its Series A.

Three design technologists started the company Robert Yuen, Moe Amaya and Alex Dixon all of whom have a background in architecture. Its software helps architectural practices manage many different aspects of their operational systems, including timesheets, budgets, human resources and invoicing; $500 million worth of projects have been executed on the platform to date.

The San Francisco-based company has grown to 33 employees after beginning 2021 with just eight, CEO and co-founder Robert Yuen told TechCrunch in an email. The new funding will be used to further grow the product and engineering teams.

The pandemic has accelerated growth among smaller design firms as the demand for new residential renovations and construction grows, Yuen wrote. As hiring in the industry picks up pace, Monograph is building a virtual community of professionals in the field through sharing content and job openings, on top of investing in its core software product.

Yuen highlighted Monographs budgeting solution, which allows project managers to view project-level finances in real time, as particularly unique given the industrys reliance on spreadsheets. According to Yuen, the typical project manager who does not use Monograph would have to wait an average of one month to understand whether they were under or over budget on a project.

John Curtius, partner at Tiger Global, was closely involved in the firms investment in Monograph.

Monograph is built for architects by architects, which is why it excels at providing a solution to minimize the time spent managing a project, Curtius said in an email to TechCrunch.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must identify as Black or African American, be eligible for the ARE, hold an NCARB Record, and be either an Associate AIA or a member of NOMA.

To apply for the more than 30 awards available under LFRT, applicants must submit a brief 500-word personal statement, a professional biography and/or rsum, and a maximum of three optional letters of recommendation. Applications to the 2022 LFRT cycle close on Friday, January 14, 2022.

The initiative follows months after NOMA and NCARB released a report focusing on the disparities in architectural licensing examinations on the basis of race, age, and gender. According to surveys carried out by the organizations, only 26% of ARE candidates feel confident they can afford the ARE, with almost 50% spending $500 or more on study material.

African American and Latino licensing candidates are 7% and 9% less likely than white candidates respectivelyto receive financial help from their firms, while African American candidates are14% more likely than white candidates to report personal debt as a factor impacting their ability to afford the ARE.

ARE pass rates for white candidates are 27-38% higher than their Black or African American peers, while Latina women are 11% more likely than white women to report spending over $500 on study material, and 20% more likely to report difficulty paying for the exam.

Work begins on Mad Architects’ cracked Denver residential tower – GCR

    - November 16, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Work has begun on Beijing-founded MAD Architects third US project: a 16-storey residential building in Denver that appears to have been ripped open to reveal its green stuffing.

One River North is a 66m-tall apartment block made up of 187 units and 1,200 sq m of green spaces, including a landscaped walkway that winds over four floors and a rooftop terrace complete with pool, spa and garden.

The projects principal developers are The Max Collaborative, Uplands Real Estate Partners and Wynne Yasmer Real Estate.

Davis Partnership Architects is serving as the executive architect and Saunders Construction is acting as the main contractor for the project; both are Denver companies.

The crack in the faade, which covers 10 storeys, is a reference to Colorados dramatic mountain scenery. Kevin Ratner, co-founder of The Max Collaborative, commented that the aim was to create a model that shows how we should be surrounding ourselves in the natural environment, bringing nature into our homes and creating authentic, biophilic experiences coupled with modern comforts and conveniences.

He added: The nature-inspired design by MAD Architects was influenced by Colorados legendary landforms and merges nature and architecture to inspire a well-balanced life. Its glass faade is likewise ribbed with louvres that regulate sunlight and soften its visual presence, shaping a serene retreat in the sky.

Mad was founded in 2004 in Beijing. One River North is the firms third project to break ground in the US, following the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, under way in Los Angeles, and the Gardenhouse, which opened in Los Angeles in 2020. A design for The Star office building on Sunset Boulevard, central Hollywood, was unveiled in September.
