New Years resolutions for homeowners might include completing various upgrades to their living spaces. And like most resolutions, items on the renovation wish list are popular and predictable.
The top five projects Philadelphia homeowners are planning for 2022 are kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, landscaping, interior painting, and exterior painting, according to research by Zillow and Realm, an online platform of home data and insights.
Nationwide, nearly three in four homeowners will consider at least one home improvement project in 2022. That number surprised researchers at Zillow.
READ MORE: Remodeling your home? Heres how to pay for it.
We think 2022 is going to be the year of the renovation, said Amanda Pendleton, Zillows home trends expert. Homeowners can build equity while making their homes more livable and functional, she said.
Kitchen and bathroom renovations are in the top five anticipated projects in cities across the country.
Kitchens and bathrooms sell homes, thats what weve always heard, Pendleton said. As places for entertainment, nourishment, and relaxation, these spaces took on additional importance during the pandemic.
READ MORE: Home bathrooms are evolving in the pandemic, just as they did in 1918
Bathroom remodels are the most popular, with more than half of surveyed homeowners saying they would consider this type of renovation. Many buyers are willing to pay a bit more for homes that have spa-like features such as curbless showers, heated floors, and free-standing bathtubs. The average cost of a bathroom remodel is about $13,400, according to Angi, the home services platform formerly known as Angies List.
Over the last couple of decades, main bathrooms have become retreats, and homeowners have become more willing to spend money to buy nice fixtures, steam showers, and lighted mirrors, thanks in part to luxurious hotel experiences, said a spokesperson for the National Kitchen and Bath Association, a trade organization representing 50,000 members of the construction, design, and retail industries who specialize in kitchens and bathrooms.
Zillow found that 46% of surveyed homeowners would consider remodeling their kitchens in 2022. Luxury kitchen features have become even more popular during the pandemic as homeowners cook more often. Homeowners are including more storage, such as walk-in pantries, and wealthy owners are adding a second kitchen, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association. The average cost of a kitchen remodel is about $35,300.
READ MORE: These kitchen features help you prepare holiday meals and sell your home
The three other renovation projects in Philadelphians top five for 2022 landscaping and interior and exterior painting are popular because they are relatively more affordable and can change the whole look of a home, according to Angi.
In nearly all of the 35 cities Realm examined, landscaping is a top priority for projects this year. The average cost of landscaping is about $2,400, according to Angi.
Interior and exterior painting ranked as a priority for 2022 in 17% of cities Realm studied. The average cost for interior painting is $2,000 and exterior painting is $3,300, according to Angi.
READ MORE: Which home renovations are worth the cost? Fewer than you think
Renovations with the highest return on investment for homeowners add living space, including conversions and additions that dont change the original structure of the house, according to Realm.
Nationwide, the projects at the top of homeowners lists include adding or improving office space, finishing a basement or attic, and adding a guest house or accessory dwelling unit such as an in-law suite, according to Zillow survey data.
Especially in high-cost and dense metropolitan areas, square footage is at a premium. And spending more time at home during the pandemic has made households want to spread out, use home gyms, and create spaces for schooling and working from home.
Space is king right now, Pendleton said, and thats what were seeing in these results.

Andrea Estes, a lifelong Hoosier, has walked through several centerpiece homes at the Indianapolis Home Show. She had no idea she was living in one.
The roots of her home,on North Emerson Avenue near East 13th Street, have beentraced back 100 years to thefirst home showin 1922.
They built a small bungalow house inside one of the buildings at the fairgrounds, saidBrent Keller, vice president ofMarketplace Eventsand a former home show manager. It was an advertising, fun way to show people what they could have. That'swhat started everything 100 years ago.
On the market: Estate of late businesswoman, philanthropist, Christel DeHaan, on sale for $14M
After the show, the house wastaken apartandmovedto its current locationon Indianapolis east side, Keller said.
It's a typical older house where the kitchen is small,Estes said. The appliances were notnearly asbig back then as they aretoday. The closets are nice and tiny. We'vebeen here 21 years and have loved the house and especially the neighborhood.
The Indianapolis Home Show is the oldest of its kind in North America, drawing 450home building, remodeling and designexhibitorsas well as80,000 attendees, according to its website. It was started by Indianapolis residentJ. Frank Cantwell after he attended a similar show in Europe.
He brought that back and thought it would be a great way, coming out of World War I, to get people interested in owning their own homes,Keller said. The centerpiece home has always been avery ship-in-the-bottle-type effect. People areamazedwecanbuild such a structureindoorsin such asmall time frame.
Esteswas surprised and even a little skeptical to learn she was living in the first centerpiece home.Marion County Assessor's Office records online indicateher home was built in 1940, with a garage added in 1989. County Assessor Joseph O'Connor said the office has limited records dating back that far and address changes through the years could make verifying the home's age a challenge.
Keller, who has worked with the Indiana Historical Societyto preserve the home shows history, said he is confident Esteshouseon North Emerson Avenue is the original centerpiece home.
More Indianapolis history: Broad Ripple's White City amusement park and the fake 'opium den' that burned it down
I am absolutely, positively sure of it, Keller said. There are multiple written records from 1922 and over the years of the house being moved there.
There is at least onephotoaroundof thehome from the 1922 show. The photodoes look like her house, Estes said.
Do you remember?: That time the Snake Pit hosted a wedding for 'the Mayor of the Fourth Turn'

Window-wise it resembles our home because the north side does only have three windows, Estes said. It has one in each bedroom then of course the one in the bathroom is smaller.
Estes has lived in the home since2000.
I'd love to know what the inside ofthe house looked like in 1922, Estes said. Our house isvery interesting. It hadallthese arches that werebuilt inside of it. Even in the bathroom it was arched to get into the shower and bathtub area.
Mostcenterpiece homeswere taken apart and rebuilt in Indianapolis or other Indiana cities, such asTerre Haute, Muncie and Logansport, Keller said.
People bought the homes at the show itself or they were put up for sale, Keller said. We still get calls today with people trying to find out if they have one of the centerpiece homes of years past.
Sometimes the homes were taken apart and sold in pieces.Othertimes the entire homeor partswere donated toHabitat for Humanity, Keller said.
The home show has happenedevery yearat the Indiana State Fairgroundssince 1922,with a few exceptions. The show was suspendedfrom 1942 to 1945due to a shortage of building materials stemming from World War II.

From 2015: Q&A with home design expert Ty Pennington
The fairgrounds were used for wartime activities during those years, Keller said. There was also no show in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The home shows comeback after World War II was accelerated when it was featured in a nine-page spread in Better Homes and Gardens magazine in 1947.
Ithelped popularize the ranch-style homeinIndianapolis in the 1950s, which wasmore affordable compared to other models. A ranch-style home has an open concept with just one story, Keller said.

New and innovative products have been introduced to attendees at the home showover the years.
"There have been some things that were first introducedeither to the Indianapolis, Indiana or U.S. markets, Keller said.
Many celebrities, including HGTV host Ty Pennington, interior designer Vern Yip, radio show host Dr. Dirtandactress Ethel Merman haveattended the show.
We've had upside down rooms, full swimming pools, cottages, log homes and even lighthouses built here, Keller said. The centerpiece home has always been a creativewayto showcase the building, remodeling and landscaping exhibitors.
The 2017 centerpiece home stands out in Kellers mind because it was built with a basement.
Think about howthat would bedifficultsince they are building the home inside anotherbuilding," Keller said. They built on top of a hill that was built into thefairgroundsbuilding. That was one of the most fun.

In recent years, the centerpiece home has been trending toward an empty-nester-type house with extra rooms forthe homeowners parentsoradult children.
It's an ever-expanding type of home, Keller said. It grows when your family grows.
The 2022 centerpiece home will be built byFischer Homes and is called the Leland, said Indianapolis Home Show ManagerLaura Groninger.
Its a four-bedroom, two-story home with the option for 2.5 or 3.5 baths and is offered in Fischer Homes neighborhoods across central Indiana.

OSHKOSH Coffee shop fanatics will have to look elsewhere for their caffeine fix.
The Cafe at The Howard, 405 Washington Ave., permanently closed Dec. 18. The Howard Operations Director Carol Velascosaid itwill be transformed into a barthat will only be open during ticketed and private events.
"We have been receiving a ton of requests on utilizing The Howard in different ways," she said. "We realized the community does have that (coffee shop) fulfilled in other elements in the area."
The Howard Cafeoriginally opened in 2018 to provide something new to the community, Velasco said. She said the caferemained open despite it being "a bit slower." Instead of being an asset as intended, she felt ittookaway from other businesses that specialize in coffee as a full-time service.

"It's an opportunity for us to send people's business to other great, local cafes," she said. "That's what they specialize and focus on."
The Howard, meanwhile, plans to focus on hosting more corporate, private and ticketed events in 2022 and beyond, Velasco said. Italso wants to focus on food service, including small-scale catering, based on feedback from community members and potential customers.
"This gives our staff time to focus on some of those initiatives," she said.
Remodeling the cafe into a bar adds versatility for those ticketed and private events, Velasco said. For example, a wedding could utilize it as a separate cocktail lounge between the ceremony and reception.
"We want to transition to a bar and event space to fill a void that the community doesn't really have," she said.
The bar will only be open during private and ticketed events.
The Lanes upscale bowling alley and bar in the basement of The Howard remains open to the public. Starting next week, Velasco saidthey are adding open bowling hours on Thursdays.
The Lanes arenow open from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Thursdays as well as 4:30 p.m. to midnight on Fridays, September to April. Reservations can be made online at thehowardoshkosh.com/thelanes.
Siblings Carey Sharpe, Jenna Golem and Ben Johnson bought the former Fraternal Order of the Eagles headquarters building and transformed it into The Howard, which opened with the cafe in September 2018. The Lanes opened in January 2019.

To run the Windows Update Troubleshooter on your Windows 10 PC, do the following:
When upgrading Windows using the ISO, normally Windows will try and connect to the internet and check for updates and install available bits its at this stage or phase of the upgrade process that the operation may go south as indicated on the error description. I have had this experience first hand; so we recommend as soon as you have the Windows ISO downloaded, disconnect the PC from the internet, then mount the ISO (if youre attempting the upgrade from Windows 7, youll need a third-party virtual drive software to mount the ISO image) and run the setup.exe file from the root folder to begin the in-place upgrade. Once the upgrade process completes successfully and you get to the desktop after completing the OOBE (Out-Of-Box Experience), you can now reconnect the PC back to the internet and check for updates to install the latest required updates.
Since the error in view is occurring trying to upgrade to the latest version of Windows using the ISO, the solution simply requires you to Upgrade via Windows Update or use Update Assistant or Media Creation Tool. For major updates like the Windows 11 Feature Update, you can manually update to the version using the two mentioned tools.
If upgrading isnt working for you, you can simply create Windows 11 bootable installation mediaon a Windows computer or on a Linux or Mac computer, back up your files and then proceed to use the media to clean install Windows 11 on the device you were trying to upgrade.
Hope you find this post helpful!

If Windows 11 is not installing on your device, it could be due to a number of reasons. For starters, Windows 11 requires 64GB of storage. So, your first troubleshooting step, is to check/analyze your drive storage space and run Disk Cleanup if need be. Alternatively, you can clean up your Hard Disk via Settings or use Storage Sense to free up diskspace.
Any PC user that wishes, can bypass the TPM requirement and install Windows 11. To install Windows 11 without TPM, just head over to the Windows 11 download page and click Download Now under the Windows 11 Installation Assistant section. This will download the Windows 11 installer to your device. When you run the installer, youll get a message that This PC cant run Windows 11.

Clark Public Utilities has doubled its rebate amounts for a limited time for those who are looking to upgrade their windows or insulation.
New windows or insulation not only provide improvements to the home itself, but it can also save homeowners money later on, stated Clark PUD media specialist Dameon Pesanti.
You can probably save up to 20% if people choose to take this limited-time opportunity, Pesanti said.
To qualify, people must live in an electrically heated home.
Its a big advantage for people who live in older homes because starting in 1990, Washington state began ratcheting up its energy efficiency standards for home construction, and its only gotten higher and higher every year after, he said.
In order to qualify for a rebate, the contractor who does the installation must be part of the PUDs contractor network. The reason, Pesanti said, is because the contractors in the network have agreed to follow the PUDs customer service standards and quality of work. Those contractors are also trained to fill out the paperwork needed to file rebates.
All the customer has to do is sign a piece of paper, Pesanti said.
The contractors must also meet the countys licensing and bonding requirements.
According to Pesanti, a homeowners biggest energy expense is heating and cooling. Insulation, he said, is the most effective and cheapest way to save money on home energy bills.
It takes effect immediately, makes you warm and comfortable all year round, and theres no maintenance because once the insulation is in, the projects done, he said.
Having a contractor install insulation can also save money because they can acquire the material in bulk, which is cheaper than a homeowner purchasing the product at a retail rate, Pesanti said.
Since newer homes built after the energy efficient standard change in 1990 have better insulation, Pesanti said homes built before 1990 would benefit more from the installation and rebates.
Most of the time, the rebate is included as a line item in the invoice so its an instant rebate for the customer and then we pay the rebate out to the contractor after the fact, Pesanti said. Thats not required though, so sometimes the customer pays the pre-rebated price to the contractor and then the rebate gets paid to the customer directly by us after the fact.
Pesanti said those who are looking to get new windows or insulation should get at least three bids before proceeding with a replacement.
According to the PUDs website, new homes are required to have R-49 insulation in the ceiling and R-30 insulation in the floor.
The website also lists other qualifications people may need to be eligible for the rebates.
How much more insulation you need depends on the cost of the fuel you use to heat your home, the website states. From a purely financial standpoint, the less you pay for heating fuel, the less it makes sense for you to invest in more insulation.
The website states that homes built in the 1960s and 1970s included little insulation because the cost of fuel didnt justify an investment in insulation, but as heating costs increase, it makes more financial sense to increase insulation.
With the incentives, customers can get $1.20 per square foot for wall insulation, $6 per square foot for double pane windows, $8 per square foot for triple pane windows, and $100 for attic or crawl space air sealing.
A full list of the rebates is listed online at https://tinyurl.com/2p9x9vah. The list of eligible contractors can be found online at clarkpublicutilities.com/services/weatherization.
For more information, people can call 360-992-3355 to speak with an energy counselor.

Visitors stroll through the Lost in the Woods art installation created by students in art and writing classes during the fall semester.
A steady flow of students and other visitors toured an interdisciplinary immersive narrative installation, created by SUNY Fredonia students enrolled in writing and art courses, at The Art Market, a Main Street storefront in Fredonia, on an unusually warm December afternoon.
The collaborative effort by students in WRTG 365 Form and Theory of Writing and ARTS 340/440 3D Methods and Materials spawned loosely-tied together narratives that combined writing and sculpture. Students developed the storylines and created sculptures and other visual illustrations.
Various stations that included a small tent were spread throughout the downtown gallery to convey the stories. The Art Market is part of Main Street Studios, a downtown performing and visual arts facility owned and operated by Department of Theatre and Dance Professor Ted Sharon.
Anyone, as they come in, passes through a series of stories, explained Department of English Assistant Professor Michael Sheehan. Along the way they encounter creatures such as a unicorn in the front window and a beautifully crafted paper mch witch related to one of the stories. Its kind of like a narrative that flows through the space, Mr. Sheehan noted, through the use of words and objects.
There were essentially three narratives: about a woman, Lilly, who lives in a mythical woods surrounded by strange creatures; two brothers who get sucked into a video game, which causes their mother great distress; and the character Juniper, who possesses some sort of telekinetic ability to connect with the brothers inside the video game and is able to bridge the two storylines.
Students in their respective classes worked in groups that took ownership of a narrative, and also met together across the two classes to share ideas, Sheehan noted. For example, one student wrote a diary of one of the characters, while another student created companion illustrations.
The collaboration was really fun in that students kind of went back and forth, Department of Visual Arts and New Media Associate Professor Peter Tucker said. Students in Sheehans class came up with prompts and that led Mr. Tuckers students to think about what they could create in response. And it worked the other way, too.
"The Writing students came up with the original prompts, my students developed ideas for sculptural forms loosely based on those prompts, then Mike's students altered their narratives based on what my students were making," Tucker said."It went back and forth, which was super fun!"
Visitors could take a dive deep into the narratives, paying close attention to solve some of the mysteries presented to them reading the stories, scanning the evidence, looking at the sculptures and putting everything together, Sheehan explained, or simply take a casual approach and see whats on display. They could also take a story along with them through a QR code so the story can continue to grow, Sheehan added.
This was the first time and hopefully not the last time, Sheehan and Tucker say that their students will collaborate on a variation of an installation that involves art and the written word.

The Microsoft Windows team is starting off 2022 with a roll out of its new Media Player to more Insiders as it transitions the app as the official replacement for Groove Music.
A few months ago, Windows Insiders started getting a taste of a new replacement app for the now defunct Groove Music player with an updated Windows Media Player that took aesthetic inspiration from Windows 11's new design language.
While the app hasn't officially become the replacement app for Groove Music for every Windows 11 user, it is going through the transition for even more Insiders at the start of the year.
A recent update to Groove Music in the Microsoft Store now links to the new Media Player app. Prior to this week's update the two apps, Windows 11 Media Player and Groove sat parallel to one another and duplicated functionality.
Now it appears the Windows team is consolidating the codebase and directing all future updates to Groove to be represented as the new Media Player app, and this is good thing.
While those of who still hold nostalgia for the last remaining remnants of the Zune interface that Groove held, the new Media Player is proving to be more functional replacement.
Media Player retains the borderless window design as Groove but also incorporates clearer navigation icons for play, pause and skipping tracks. Another added benefit of the new design is better visual cohesion with the OS.
The Media Player app does retain trace elements of the color scheme of the old Groove Music player, its rounded corners, slate grey background and iconography match much closer to the new design language of Windows 11.
As far as functionality is concerned, there are a few things the new Media Player app needs to incorporate to make par with Groove or even the old Windows Media Player such as extended codec support or network support to pull media from OneDrive.
On the flipside, the Media Player does direct users to the Microsoft Store to get additionally (approved) codecs, and the player does bring a nice new equalizer setting to manually adjust the sound for music as well as pretty extensive casting menu to share content to other devices.
For local files that are recognized by the player, there are also settings to pull metadata from the cloud to fill in items such as album cover art, publishing dates and studio information.
All in all, the new Media Player is shaping up to be a great replacement for Groove, the old Windows Media Player and hopefully the Movies & TV app at some point.

For decades Hope Home Repair assisted low income home owners with repairs to their homes.
Since 2011 Hope Home Repair has worked in conjunction with the City of Newton, utilizing Community Development Block Grant funding to assist with home repairs issuing low or no interest loans to some homeowners to assist with repairs like new windows, heating and air systems, water heaters and roofs for homeowners with an income of $14,000 a year.
Those days are, apparently, over. Jan. 11 the city commission will likely terminate the agreement at the request of Hope Home Repair.
The organizations board of directors notified city staff via letter at the end of December that the organization is unable to accept new applications and requesting the closure of a memorandum of understanding between the city and Hope Home Repair.
For many years, HOPEs founder, a licensed general contractor, was able to do much of the work himself. Health challenges have gradually changed that, the board wrote in a letter to the city commission and city staff.
Calling the phone number listed for Hope Home Repair listed on the organizations letterhead and online results in a phone number not valid message.
During the agreement city staff assisted with approving applications for funding. Projects have included replacing siding, guttering, broken windows, the roof, electrical or plumbing upgrades, and repainting house exteriors.
[We] would like to take this opportunity to express our most sincere gratitude to the staff and board members of HHR for their dedicated service to those most in need in the Newton community, wrote Kelly McElroy, city manager, in a memo to the city commission. Their work has improved countless lives and properties in our community and we are grateful for their service.
At the income level served, home repairs can be difficult if not impossible to pay for. The CDBG backed loans were/ are repaid to the revolving account with the city as properties change hands.
Yet, statistics demonstrate that cost for a retirement community are far higher than remaining in ones own home, and furthermore, its more satisfying and mentally healthy, wrote the board of Hope Home Repair in its letter to city staff.
City staff and the Commission have advised and recommended that any remaining CDBG funds obligated to the Hope Home Repair program can be moved to new city weatherization program, that has a similar mission and vision. City staff estimated there are about $49,000 available in CBDG funds that could be rolled into the new program.

It is conceivable Sheffield Wednesday will add to their attacking options before the end of the January transfer window.
Losing Theo Corbeanu to League One rivals Milton Keynes Dons was not part of the plan. Wolverhampton Wanderers cut short his loan spell, ending his hit-and-miss time at Hillsborough.
One of the issues appeared to be Darren Moore's utilisation of the Canadian as a wing-back instead of a winger. However, regardless of whether Corbeanu's patchy form or the manager's choices are the primary issue, the club have lost an attacking option, whilst one of their rivals have been strengthened.
So it is highly likely the Owls will be in the market for another attacker. Rayhaan Tulloch of West Bromwich Albion has been linked, as has Josh Sims, who is currently a free agent.
Yorkshire Live has assessed some options the club could look at, primarily looking to utilise the loan market and seeking players who have yet to make the breakthrough at Premier League clubs.

This would be an ambitious one.
Clarke has Championship experience, having spent half the season on loan at Stoke City in 2020/21 and with his form in the division for Leeds United saw Tottenham Hotspur spend 10 million to secure his signature.
However, Clarke has stagnated since moving to London and found himself primarily limited to Premier League Two football. With that in mind, a move to League One and particularly back to Yorkshire could be tempting as he could play regular football and be close to home comforts.
His direct wing play would be hugely beneficial to Moore's side as he is the third highest contributor of assists in Premier League Two this season.
Another option from Spurs, Markanday is 20-years-old and has yet to have his senior debut so would likely be seeking a move in January to get his senior career started.
His 12 goals and five assists from the right wing prove that he has outgrown U23s football and it's time for him to get a chance in league football.
One thing which might count against him is his physicality though, as he is 5 feet 8 inches with a slight build. If he played tentatively against League One defenders he could be bullied.
A 19-year-old of Zimbabwean descent, Maswanhise is one of the stars of Leicester City's U23s side.
He is a rangy winger, with excellent pace and skill. His long strides and acceleration allow him to burst past players easily. Whilst he has a slim build, he would perhaps suit League One football more than Markanday due to a little more height and better acceleration allowing him to escape defenders.
He is Leicester's top goal scorer in Premier League Two this season with five and should he be loaned out this month, it would be his first step into senior football.
West Ham's 20-year-old from Dublin, the fantastically named Armstrong Oko-Flex is a versatile forward, capable of playing on both wings or as an auxiliary striker.
He initially came through Arsenal's academy after being scouted in Dublin, before moving to Celtic and moving back to London with West Ham in the summer.
He is a powerful forward who primarily prefers playing on the left to cut in and shoot on his right foot. This has seen him become the second top goal scorer in Premier League Two this season, behind only Arsenal's Folarin Balogun. Like the two previous options, he is seeking his first opportunity in senior football.
The Leeds United forward has some senior experience as he made a handful of appearances for Birmingham City in the Championship at the end of last season.
The 19-year-old was subsequently bought by the Whites but the Premier League club could be tempted to allow him to move on loan and gain more experience at senior level. He is a left footed player but is adept at playing from the right or the left.
His best football for Leeds has come on the left, where he has been most confident taking on fullbacks and attacking the byline.
