Review: Ranking the X-Men movies Grand Valley Lanthorn – Grand Valley Lanthorn

    - January 25, 2022 by Mr HomeBuilder

Over break, I decided to watch every X-Men film and rank them in an extremely subjective fashion. Throughout my binge, I enjoyed this Den of Geeks article by Kayti Burt explaining every confusing plot hole in the several timelines this franchise has created. Its been extremely enjoyable reviewing and very confusing. Ive laughed, Ive cried and Ive kissed several hours of my life goodbye.

The New Mutants is one of the worst films Ive ever watched. What makes it worse is the fact that this might be the last movie of a beloved franchise.

The latest addition to the franchise brings an interesting idea: creating a thriller/horror movie with young mutants trying to control their powers. Ideally, this movie should have been on the same level as The Machinist and Fractured. However, it failed on almost every aspect of storytelling, whether it be character development, script, cinematography and CGI.

The way this movie was produced is laughable and the idea turned into a shit-storm. It rivals the idea of creating a romantic comedy starring Black Widow and the Hulk or a Tony Stark movie like the Social Network. Despite the effort put in by Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton with an absolutely terrible script, this movie should have never been attempted.

At this point in the prequel series, I couldnt get over the fact that the films have spanned 50 years and every actor looks like they havent aged a day. Dark Phoenix follows a familiar storyline revolving around Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and her struggle to control her powers. But theres a moronic and poorly thought-out twist: the presence of aliens. Yeah, it wasnt good.

This was done better in X-Men: The Last Stand with the original cast and its a waste of a film and also extremely confusing for the timeline to rehash this story again. Some originality wouldve been appreciated.

Its obvious that Bryan Singerthe director of several X-Men films left during production due to sexual misconduct allegations. With Simon Kinberg at the helm, the movie fell apart. The writing was flawed, plotlines were confusing and added nothing to the movie and several actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult appeared to be over this franchise. This series should have ended with X-Men: Apocalypse.

I remember enjoying X-Men Origins: Wolverine when I was a kid. After watching the movie again, Ive realized I was a dumb kid.

Like usual, Hugh Jackman gives an amazing performance as our favorite metal-clawed hero Wolverine. The script and action-focused direction failed Jackman. What was to be the start of an origins series, Wolverines story was filled with explosions and one-liners. Exploring his past also didnt add much to the character and officially ended the ambiguity of his character that was prominent in the original series.

The plot follows a Kill Bill story as Logan hunts down his former army buddies and exacts his revenge for William Stryker putting adamantium in his body. Logans brother Sabertooth (Liev Schreiber) kills his wife and for some reason the audience is supposed to care about their relationship after three scenes of sappy dialogue and some dumb story about the moon.

The real tragedy of this movie is what it does to other beloved comic book characters. Sabretooth was portrayed in the first X-Men film, but hes now played by someone else and no one mentions anything in the 2000 movie about their relationship? That was really the best they could do with Gambit? John Wraith is portrayed by will.i.am?

And a new depiction of Ryan Reynolds Deadpool was remedied seven years later.

Out of all the X-Men movies, X-Men: Apocalypse might be the blandest. Its a decent film, but it doesnt really touch on any new issues in the series or develop some of the older themes.

As usual, the acting and script are all solid. Its noticeable however that this was the point that the prequel franchise started relying more on CGI and action sequences rather than a compelling plot.

The film introduces a new villain, En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac). He tries to take over the world after being asleep in Egypt for over 5,000 years. En Sabah Nur is supposed to be the ultimate badass and is trying to conquer the planet. Stop me if youve heard this plot-line before.

Overall, the movie is entertaining yet disappointing. Professor X and Magneto argue tirelessly about humans and mutants. Several new students like Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler all hone in their powers after first being afraid and uncontrolled. Even a brief cameo by Hugh Jackman in his Weapon X form couldnt save this movie from mediocrity. This film could have been much more than what it was and it was the beginning of the end for the franchise.

This was not the way a trilogy should end. Despite introducing some new themes, political commentary and ethical issues, the film tries to answer these questions with giant explosions, a lot of fighting and superpowers.

Ironicallybecause of their storylines this film was absent from Singers direction much like Dark Phoenix. Like the newer Star Wars movies, the fact that the final film didnt have a consistent director made the movie suffer. The storyline in essence would have been great for the finale with Jean Grey becoming Dark Phoenix and not being able to control her powers. However, this film was too fast-paced and action-oriented to deliver. X-Men: The Last Stand at least conveyed this plotline much better than Dark Phoenix.

The biggest issue with the third and final film in the original trilogy was the fact that it didnt live up to its predecessors. The first two films were unlike other superhero movies with their character development and themes. Instead, X-Men: The Last Stand is like an Avenger movie with its action and failures.

Finally, weve reached the point in the franchise where I have little complaints about the films.

The Wolverine sets Logan in Japan and portrays him being less than immortal. As usual, Jackman is brilliant, and this time the rest of the ensemble pulls their weight. Rila Fukushima as Yukio in particular gives an amazingly amusing and heart-warming performance.

The film also brings a new idea by placing the cast in a new setting and set pieces to visually enjoy. Logans motivations are much clearer than in his first standalone film. We feel his pain as he struggles with his immorality, loss of friends like Jean and Charles Xavier, his aging body and new relationship with Mariko Yashida (Tao Okamoto).

The Wolverine is everything that X-Men Origins: Wolverine wasnt and proved that a Wolverine movie was possible to pull off with its acting, plot and more substantial action sequences. The film also paved the way for James Mangolds next movie in the franchise, Logan.

We all know prequel movies arent the best ideajust look at the Star Wars franchise. What makes X-Men: First Class work, however, is its cast and script. McAvoy is great as a young Professor X, Lawrence was surprisingly a great cast for Mystique and Fassbender was perfect as the younger version of our favorite metal wielding badass.

As a prequel movie, X-Men: First Class also stands out due to the success of the originals. The first three X-Men movies did an excellent job setting up its characters, themes and philosophies. Rather than take a feature length film to eventually explain why characters feel the way they do, X-Men: First Class benefits from the fact that these characters are already so solidified that they can just focus on their interactions and why their original feelings have escalated.

This is the reason why this movie is an excellent origin story. The pacing of the film is perfect as it follows the world becoming more aware of mutants, Charles starting his school and Charles and Erics relationship. It also sets up the rest of the series in a perfect way with the films ending even though the later films didnt deliver.

We all knew that there was going to be a second Deadpool movie after the tremendous success of its predecessor. Deadpool 2 is a great film, but with the title character, its difficult to add more emotion or anything new to the series.

What was added was a more in-depth plot with its action sequences and characters. Deadpool stays exactly the same: un-killable, comedic and just a badass. Reynolds stays great, but the additions to the cast is what really makes this movie standout.

Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino are brilliant. As usual, Brolin plays an excellent bad guy and even has some great comedic lines. Beetz is a great addition to the cast as a young woman whose power is being lucky. (Is that a power, though?) These two combined with Reynolds makes this film standout in a way that not many sequels do.

I still think the original Deadpool movie is better. The ideas are largely the same and its extremely difficult for a sequel to be better than the original. While Deadpool may be higher on this list, Deadpool 2 isnt far behind it as its still one of the best movies in the X-Men franchise.

X-Men: Days of Future Past reminds me of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The idea for the second X-Men movie in the prequel series is unique: lets take the prequel cast and combine them with the original crew. To do this the series relies on time-travel not the most original idea, but it holds up, I suppose.

The best part about the idea isnt just the combination of the cast, but instead where it lies in the plot. Unlike the newest addition in the Spider-Man series, X-Men: Days of Future Past relies on the mutant and human issues to drive its story.

At this point in the franchise, Magnetos and Charles arguing was getting stale. In this film however, things are heightened when characters realize what their actions will truly mean in the past while their future-selves fight for survival.

This is evident in Charles and Erics relationship. In the past, their friendship is shown even as they continue to differ in their ideals and actions. In the future, its excellent to see these characters understand the roles theyve played and how theyve both not only failed each other, but that both of their ideologies were flawed.

Like most of the X-Men films, theres fantastic acting and action. Every actor from Fassbender to McKellen, from McAvoy to Stewart and from Jackman to Lawrence is fantastic. The intersections between these characters are also brilliant. As a standalone film, X-Men: Days of Future Past is one of the most enjoyable.

The only real issue I have with this entry is what it did for the entire franchise. This film opened the idea to add another timeline to the series or is it three or four timelines, who knows? This was the point in the series when I stopped believing the later films were even connected to the original and just decided that each movie was just a product of its own and not added to the larger X-Men collective.

The first X-Men movie is still a pleasure to watch today. Even though its over 20-years-old, the film is still entertaining and action sequences still stand for todays standards. After watching it again, I can say its still an excellent movie and its a blueprint for superhero movies today.

X-Men expertly sets this story from the pages in a comic book to the big screen. It also frames the trilogy perfectly with Xaviers (Patrick Stewart) and Magnetos (Ian McKellen) philosophical differences, Logans memory loss and struggle to find out who he is and the issues with humanity dealing with super-powered mutants.

The cast is also superb with Jackman, Stewart, McKellen, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos. With its acting, large yet realized plot and unique action scenes, X-Men paved the way for modern hero movies and started one of the top grossing franchises to date.

X2 is everything you want from a sequel. The scale was raised. The action was tighter and grittier. The stakes were higher. The team-ups and new characters were abundant.

In Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back fashion, X2 has a darker plot. Stryker (Brian Cox) is targeting Professor Xs school and eventually kidnaps the majority of his students. A group of teens escape with Logan and eventually the crew unites with Magneto and Mystique to get their students back and destroy Strykers military compound.

The best feature of X2 is what several sequels struggle with. X2 thickens its themes and messages while also introducing new characters and ideas in an extremely tight script. The human and mutant war is obviously brewing and the tension between the mutant factions are evident. The mysteries surrounding Logan are touched on without giving up too much information. Even Jeans and Logans relationship is expanded in a realistic way.

X2 pathed the way for sequels like The Dark Knight and the rest of the Avengers series. The second movie in the X-Men franchise delivered in almost every single way.

Deadpool fans finally got what they wanted in 2016. After the atrocity that X-Men Origins: Wolverine put on the big screen with its representation of our favorite merc with a mouth, Ryan Reynolds went back to the drawing board to deliver a fan-service feature length film.

Its surprising that Reynolds was able to play this role so perfectly especially after his first attempt as Wade Wilson and of course his first foray into the hero industry in Green Lantern. In Deadpool however, Reynolds is perfect with his quick one-liners, fourth wall-breaks and swearing-tirades.

Much like Logan, Deadpool brings to the big screen what several fans wanted: an R-rated blood fest filled with gut-busting moments. For superhero movies as whole, Deadpool stands out as the first of its kind. This film proves that a bloody comedy in the genre is profitable and enjoyable evident by its $783.1 million gross. In terms of the X-Men franchise, Deadpool ranks as one of the best for its action, script, acting and authenticity to its comic book counterpart.

Logan is not only the best X-Men movie in the franchise, but possibly the best superhero movie ever. Jackson, Stewart and new-comer Dafne Keen are stellar in their roles. The plot is rough, realistic and bloody.

The best part of the film surrounds the fact that Logan isnt what he once was. After Charles has a seizure and kills several of the X-Men crew, Logan is now tasked with taking care of his old mentor. Now an alcoholic, aging and depressed man, Logan has lost all touch with the world and even with his own emotions. This changes when he finds Laura (Keen) and must help this young mutant find her companions and lead her to safety.

The way Jackman portrays his role is perfect. Watching every bullet, punch and stabbing that Logan endures is gut-wrenching as Wolverine cant heal at the same rate. This realistic story with tighter fights although there are some epic sequences fits the film perfectly. This was exactly what X-Men fans and Jackson were looking for in this movie: A story around Logan where hes not as much of a hero but just a man. Logan is the best entry in this franchise and is one of the best Marvel movies there is.

A couple of veteran assistant coaches with ties to the Palouse are among the latest additions to new Idaho coach Jason Ecks staff.

Stanley Franks Jr., a record-setting defensive back for the Vandals in 2006 who spent the last two seasons at Washington State as a defensive quality control coach, has been hired as Idahos cornerbacks coach.

David Lose, whose coaching itinerary includes six seasons at Washington State (2011-16) as a defensive assistant, joins the Vandals as defensive line coach. He spent the last four seasons as a defensive quality control analyst at his alma mater, Oregon State.

As a Vandal, Franks set the Idaho single-season interception record with nine in 2006, a mark that led the NCAA and helped earn him first-team All-WAC and Sports Illustrated honorable mention All-America. He played three seasons for the BC Lions of the CFL (2009-11) and one with the Spokane Shock (2009).

After coaching two seasons at Ferris HS (2010-11) and one as defensive coordinator for the Shock (2012), his resume includes stops at Idaho State (2013-17), the BC Lions (2017-18) and Cabrillo (California) Community College (2019) before arriving at WSU.

Lose, who played at Oregon State in the early 2000s and spent five seasons in the Arena Football League-2, was defensive line coach at Portland State (2017-18) before going to WSU. He also coached two seasons at Saint Pauls College (2009-10) after starting his coaching journey at his alma mater, Luther Burbank HS in Sacramento (2006-08).

Dave DeMers, whose name is synonymous with high school track and field in Sandpoint (the schools track and field complex is named in his honor), was the recipient of the Idaho State Coaches Association 2021 Track and Field Distinguished Coach of the Year Award.

A 1978 Sandpoint graduate, DeMers focused his attention on track and field after a knee injury ended his football career at Boise State in 1979, and he set the school record in the javelin in his first year.

He stepped down as track coach at Sandpoint in 2015 after 27 years but continues as an assistant, focusing on the jumps and hurdles. He retired from the Lake Pend Oreille School District in 2018 after 34 years as a teacher, coach and athletic director. He also coached football and basketball and was the middle school A.D. for 26 years.

DeMers led Sandpoint to its only state championship, winning the 4A title in 2003, and this past spring, his latest protg, Braden Kappen, won the State 4A boys long jump. The Bulldogs placed fourth, earning the schools first state trophy since 2004.

Bear Hughes, a forward from Post Falls and fifth-round selection of the Washington Capitals in the 2020 NHL entry draft, has been named the 35th captain in Spokane Chiefs franchise history, filling a void left when Jack Finley was traded recently to Winnipeg.

To fill out their leadership group for the balance of the 2021-22 season, the Chiefs also named forward Blake Swetlikoff and defenseman Raegan Wiles full-time alternate captains and forwards Erik Atchison and Reed Jacobson and defenseman Graham Sward alternate captains on a part-time basis.

Taylor Christian of the Spokane Junior Rifle Club, a sophomore at the University of Memphis, won the 2022 womens individual Washington State USA Junior Olympic Air Rifle Championship Dec. 11-12.

The Spokane Valley Tech graduate scored 583 out of a maximum 600, taking 10 shots in the standing position from 10 meters. Winning a gold medal earned the 19-year-old an automatic spot in the National Junior Olympics Championships in May in Hillsdale, Michigan.

Anna Pearsall, 19, an Eastern Washington University student, finished eighth in the 15-shooter womens field with a 549.

SJRC had two top-four placers in the 23-shooter mens competition. Ben Tafoya, 18, Spokane Falls CC, shot 555 to finish third and capture the bronze medal, and Garrett Pearsall, 17, Mt. Spokane HS, shot 548 for fourth.

The SJRC Gold team Christian, Tafoya and Pearsall earned the silver medal in the team competition, losing the gold in a tiebreaker.

Madeline Gotta, a former Gonzaga University team captain, three-time All-WCC selection and third-team United Soccer Coaches Academic All-American as a senior in 2019 (3.58 GPA), has rejoined the womens program as director of operations, head coach Chris Watkins announced.

Gotta is eighth in program history with 37 points, her 13 goals 10th all-time and 11 assists sixth. She was All-WCC second team in 2017 and 2018 after being named to the All-Freshman Team and honorable mention All-WCC in 2016. Following graduation, she played professionally in Spain, Iceland and Sweden.

The 10 best songs of 2021 – The Michigan Daily

    - January 25, 2022 by Mr HomeBuilder

Found on this list are boisterous anthems played the world over; beautiful, intimate ballads and boundary-pushing, underground hits. Although the songs featured in this article are of great diversity, they all share a common thread excellence. Theres no doubt each of the songs on this list will end up in the music history books. In no particular order, here are the 10 songs the writers in The Michigan Daily Music Beat believe to be the best of 2021.

Kai Bartol, Music Beat Editor and Rosa Sofia Kaminski, Senior Arts Editor

family ties, Baby Keem ft. Kendrick Lamar

family ties will undoubtedly go down as one of the defining songs of our current musical era. Featuring Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem, two of the most in-vogue rappers, this track represents Keems mainstream breakout and new beginnings for Kendrick.

Unapologetic in all aspects of its production, family ties exudes the confidence of two artists who fully understand their significance. Cocky lines such as Kendricks Smokin on your top five tonight and Keems The girl of your dreams to me is a fan are substantiated by the tracks downright fantastic production. The songs blistering instrumentals include boisterous horns and manic 808s that swerve through multiple tonal shifts, combining with Keems marathon-level delivery to elevate the track from song to spectacle.

family ties will amp you up and leave you exhilarated. It reminds you that Keem and Kendrick are running the show and proves theyll have much more to offer in the future.

    Kai Bartol, Music Beat Editor

INDUSTRY BABY Lil Nas X ft. Jack Harlow

Lil Nas X really has a knack for controversy and writing memorable tunes. INDUSTRY BABY is undoubtedly one of the catchiest earworms of 2021.

Its loud, boisterous brass and snare drums call back to marching bands and give it a triumphant sound, with an absolutely addictive hook. Its rebellious and still has that outsider underdog feel to it, despite its production value. Jack Harlows verse fits well with the song, though his role in the music video seems a little misplaced. Lil Nas X injects humor, sexiness and attitude into an absolutely captivating performance.

Put best by one commenter on YouTube, Salvador Rodona: Never thought Id see a male version of WAP.

SWEET / I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE, Tyler, The Creator

The longest song from Tyler, The Creators latest album, SWEET / I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE features rare emotional vulnerability on an album that is otherwise defined by Tylers extravagance and tasteful arrogance.

Musically, the track is upbeat with dynamic and diverse instrumentals influenced by R&B, West Coast hip hop, jazz and reggae, but lyrically, the song has a completely different tone. In the first half, Tyler sings about a romantic relationship, stating his love is so strong a diamond couldnt put a dent in it. However, in the second half, Tyler slowly expresses mixed emotions about his love, culminating in one of the best rap verses on CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST where Tyler boldly reveals he wishes he never even met the person he fell in love with.

Despite being nearly 10 minutes long, every second of SWEET / I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE is memorable thanks to its captivating blend of musical styles and emotional themes. Once again, Tyler, The Creator has leveled up as a musician and raised the bar for modern hip-hop.

    Jack Moeser, Daily Arts Writer

All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylors Version) (From the Vault), Taylor Swift

Taylor Swifts Red (Taylors Version) broke the internet and made one of Swifts most beloved albums into one of the top albums of the year.

The most highly anticipated track off the rerecording was certainly the frequently teased 10-minute version of fan-favorite, All Too Well. While the 10-minute version stayed true in many ways to the original release, the additions and overall feeling of the song absolutely shocked fans, completely taking the world by storm. The track became the longest song to ever chart at number one and the longest song to ever be performed on Saturday Night Live.

Despite the sheer mass of the track, it truly is as marvelous as everyone says. Its a full story, a full relationship, in the span of one track. The heartbreak and the memories are palpable in the lyrics, and Swifts tender and intimate emotional revisitation of a 10-year-old track is baffling in its cutting realness. All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylors Version) (From the Vault) is a beautiful trip down memory lane that will stick in our minds for a long time to come.

BIG PERSONA, Maxo Kream ft. Tyler, The Creator

The lead single off of Weight of the World, Maxo Kreams third studio album, this boisterous southern rap tune, definitely fits into the sonic trend of this portion of Tyler, The Creators career.

He has expressed that his most recent studio album, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, is intended to emulate the legendary King of Philly: Gangsta Grillz tapes of yore. BIG PERSONA doesnt deviate from this trend. The thunderous horns that comprise the beats main melody have become staples of Tylers recent production work as a result of their heavy use by Gangsta Grillz mastermind DJ Drama. However, Tyler also throws in a subtle homage to Maxos hometown of Houston with the songs drums, which have a slower, lilting pattern that has become a trademark of the citys hip-hop sound.

Its nice to hear both artists, who have reputations for conveying phenomenal pain and heartsickness in their music, celebrate their success together and have a little bit of rambunctious fun.

    Ryan Brace, Daily Arts Writer

    Hotel Breakfast, Bladee

Bladees Hotel Breakfast off of The Fool was by far his most popular release of 2021 and is slowly becoming his most listened to track of all time on streaming services.

Despite the songs controversy among more devoted fans, as well as the Swedish rappers unstable reputation within internet music circles, its undeniable how immediately fun and strikingly memorable Hotel Breakfast can be. It doesnt take itself too seriously, but still manages to cultivate a sense of sincerity through Bladees ethereal yet catchy vocals. Its melodic and unforgettable; itll make you laugh, itll make you think, itll make you sing, itll tell you a story its simply Bladee at his best.

And if youre a fan of hip-hop, rap or lyricism, you will not fail to see the genius, the beauty and the emotion behind one of the most incredible bars in recent memory: Im Bladee, she call me Bladee-y.

    Conor Durkin, Daily Arts Writer

    Heart Storm, Serpentwithfeet ft. NAO

Heart Storm sounds just how its titled. Serpentwithfeets voice pulls you in like a tornado, forcing surrender, while the interval bass enters and leaves like thunder getting closer and closer. The track washes over at first, with Serpentwithfeets quiet vocals and repetition of bass, but as it progresses, it builds into a downpour. NAO enters the track unapologetically, calling for boundless love. It is the perfect track to play when the feelings of an overwhelming crush take over.

    Katy Trame, Daily Arts Writer

    Hard Drive, Cassandra Jenkins

This gem of a song was released in January of 2021 but has been stuck in my brain the entire year. Jenkinss voice is so warm and intimate that even her patchwork of barely relatable interactions with museum security guards and consoling psychics feel familiar. As she transitions seamlessly from spoken word to meditative chorus, Jenkins collects these disparate moments with strangers into one cohesive tapestry of human nature. She isnt trying to make sense of all her experiences; instead shes letting twists of grief and healing mingle and wash over her.

A voice clip of the aforementioned museum security guard opens the track and reminds Jenkins that, When we lose our connection to nature, we lose our spirit, our humanity, our sense of self. Over hazy guitar and airy swells of saxophone, Jenkins invites us to scour our own hard drive of memories and dwell on our humanity for just a moment. She counts to three in steady intonations, reassuring the listener that, All those little pieces / One, two, three / Were gonna put em back together now / Are you ready? At its core, Hard Drive is a glimmeringly gorgeous delineation of feeling whole again despite the fractured struggles of the past year.

Tears in Abyss, deaths dynamic shroud

It doesnt feel all that forced to say that plunderphonics (otherwise known as sampling) is one of the most important innovations to be introduced to pop music and perhaps just music in general. However, what might in fact be forced to say is that the next great innovation was realizing that other modern pop songs were perfectly suitable phonics-to-be-plundered.

Not only is Tears in Abyss by deaths dynamic shroud one of the best songs of the year, it also serves as a perfect case study of this phenomenon of pop recycling. Built up from Demi Lovatos Skyscraper and Kelsea Ballerinis the way i used to, this song achieves a level of glitch pop maximalism that feels frankly unheard of in the genre. Even so, it seems just as fair to call it vaporwave given deaths dynamic shrouds well-defined status within that genre. Every conceivable open space is filled with a unique set of moving textures and rhythms in a way that feels both repetitive and ever-changing.

This sense of morphing is most notably recognized in the way Lovatos and Ballerinis vocals are shifted and manipulated in an off-putting yet organic way. It sounds strange to call something constructed in such a macabre manner emotional, but there isnt really any other way to put it. Jumping, laughing, crying, screaming its all there to be unraveled.

    Spud Infinity, Big Thief

So often, infinity is interpreted with terror or at least trepidation. But on Spud Infinity by alternative folk outfit, Big Thief, there is a determined joy to infinity you can hear the resolve in each bow of the fiddle.

The jaw harp bounces as a happy backbone to the song, with the drums and sunny guitar filling out the piece. The band finds the perfect line between profundity and just plain silliness in their lyrics, inspecting our size on this earth through talk of ants, elbows and knishes. My listening experience is best when I let my imagination roam free: Sometimes I picture them playing this in the back of a pickup truck under sunny skies, sometimes around a campfire late at night. Wherever they wind up, you can feel the bands intense connection to each other, both musical and emotional, in the full-heartedness with which this piece is performed. Adrianne Lenkers sweet whup! at the end draws the listener into the kind and frenzied dance of this song.

‘Servant’: Why the Apple TV+ Series Will End With Season 4 – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

    M. Night Shyamalans psychological thriller, Servant, is back for season 3. And while teasing whats to come, the showrunner revealed why hes ending the Apple TV+ series with season 4.

Servant premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim. By the second season, which hit Apple TV+ in January 2021, the show grew in popularity, and its finale cliffhanger left audiences wanting more.

Servant Season 3 hits the streamer on Jan. 21. And it has already been renewed for a fourth installment. Shyamalan, whose daughter Ishana Shyamalan serves as writer and director, is ending the series with Season 4. And he says its because he wants the show to be driven by its story, not viewership.

Its tricky because if youre doing an episodic show, its not as problematic, he told TV Line. But on a serialized show, youre kind of going, Did the audience like it? OK, weve got another season! And you feel that were just adding on additions to the house rather than [focusing on] its natural design.

Acknowledging the shows growing audience, Shyamalan said he doesnt want to keep going only to appease ratings. Its a tricky balancing act because the information thats driving you is coming in yearly, he suggested.

Part of the reason I wanted to get to a finish line: I dont want to be telling a story in relation to the decay or rise of the audience, Shyamalan added. Hopefully, the audience will feel that integrity, and itll resonate with them as they move forward.

Servant follows the story of Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose) and Sean Turner (Toby Kebbell), their mysterious new nanny, Leanne (Nell Tiger Free), and Dorothys brother, Julian (Rupert Grint). Last season, after finding out Leanne was part of a strange cult, Dorothy kidnapped and tortured the nanny, pressuring her to get Jericho back.

But after the finale in which Leanne shuns her cult in favor of Dorothy the dynamic between the two has changed. And according to Ishana Shyamalan, season 3 will find the pair in a much more respectful place. But she hints fans will have until the end of the season to see how their relationship pans out.

RELATED: Servant Season 3 Will Find Dorothy Helping a Paranoid Leanne

Where they start out in Season 3 is actually a really beautiful place, she told TV Line. They are all coexisting in this family unit and seeing if it can work as this family of four brought together by these crazy circumstances. Its very fraught and beautiful in many ways, and well see if it can work out.

The first two seasons of Shyamalans Apple TV+ series aired with ten episodes each. And it seems the new installment will be just as long.

Servant Season 3 will also air with ten episodes. The show premieres on Jan. 21 and will drop new episodes weekly, on Fridays.

21 Small House Interior Design Ideas – How to Decorate a …

    - January 25, 2022 by Mr HomeBuilder

When you live in a small house or apartment, fitting in everything you need is difficult. Trying to fit everything and making it look cute is an even bigger challenge, but that's what makes small space design so fun: Coming up with clever solutions to those obstacles makes it all the more rewarding in the end. Whether you live in a studio apartment or want to get more out of a tiny room in a small house, these small space design ideas will make it feel so much larger while maintaining style.

    1Incorpoate Reflective Materials

Opt for white lacquered walls and glossy tiles, as designer Brian Patrick Flynn did here. The high-shine materials are reflective and will generate the same maximizing effect that a mirror will, bouncing light and making for a generally airer space.

    SHOP TILES Zellige Tiles, $2

    2Opt for Pocket Doors

Pocket doors with glass windows allow for shared light to flow throughout the space while also creating separation. And even better, they slide right into the wall when not being used, taking up much less space than swinging doors.

SHOP DOORS IKEA Sliding Doors, $180

    3Be Resourceful

When space is limited and you don't want to shop for new, bulky furniture, use a chair as a side table and install wall sconces to save surface space. A cheerful color, like this pale turquoise hue, is also a good idea to set a happy mood in a tiny room.

SHOP SCONCES Arc Mid-Century Sconce, $79

    4Shrink Your Dining Table

Small round tables aren't just for breakfast nooks. Ditch the giant dining table and give yourself some extra space by opting for a small, round dining table instead.

SHOP TABLES Marble Dining Table, $999

    5Use a Day Bed

Add a day bed and watch your bedroom double in size. If you don't have a designated guest room, this could also come in handy in your living room.

SHOP BEDS Monarch Hill Daybed, $672

    6Express Yourself Everywhere

Yes, even on the fridgeno, especiallyyour fridge and other bulky appliances. Since there's limited space for extras and less room to pile in all your favorite items, you'll need to beautify everything. Here, Anthony Dunning turned a regular old refrigerator into a design opportunity by dressing it up in removable wallpaper.

SHOP REMOVEABLE WALLPAPER Peel and Stick Paper, $150

    7Mount Your TV

A media console is the biggest space waster in a small living room. Mount your TV on the wall or above a fireplace and you'll regain necessary floor space.

SHOP WALL MOUNTS TV Wall Mount, $30

    8Hide Your TV

Or, even better, hide it! Whether inside of a credenza or disguised as artwork, this design trick is perfect for anyone whose living room is always their family room, dining room, and/or more.

SHOP MEDIA CABINETS TV Stand, $300

    9Do Double Duty

Pieces that can serve multiple purposes are key: Find a table that can function as a desk and dining table, get a deep sofa that can double as a guest bed, or buy cubes that serve as a coffee table and bonus seats when guests are over.

    SHOP SEATING Storage Ottoman, $315

    10Take Advantage of Architectural Quirks

Every single inch counts in a small house, so be sure to take full advantage of architectural quirksthis way, they'll actually become your favorite thing about the space. That radiator by your window? Invest in a pretty radiator cover and customize a cushion so you can use it as a window nook to read and relax in. (And you'll be able to forgo the bulky couch that'll take up half the studio!) Pile on the pillows and add a pendant light for tasks, as Jae Joo did here.

SHOP RADIATOR COVERS Radiator Cover, $255

    11Use Mirrors

It's the oldest design trick in the book: Mirrors will make your space feel larger, lighter, and airier. And a fun convex one like this adds a lot of personality without taking up a ton of space.

    SHOP MIRRORS Mirror Plates, $16

    12Make Every Piece Count

    13Think About Scale

If your kitchen doesn't have an island and you don't have a living room that's separate from the kitchen, don't give up on making it functional. Opt for a tall wooden table that can provide some extra counter space for cooking and as a two-top dining table. Use this one in a kitchen by Corinne Mathern Studio as your blueprint.

BUY SMALL ISLANDS Counter Table, $125

    14Keep It Neutral

Calm, even-toned rooms fool the eye into thinking they're more spacious than they are. Make sure to add a variety of textures to keep the space from falling flat.

    SHOP PILLOWS Velvet Pillow, $6

    15Convert a Closet

Designer David Kaihoi used some seriously smart storage solutions to make his New York City apartment work harderincluding creating this compact laundry "room" in his closet. That way, when he's not doing laundry, he can close the door on these eyesore appliances.

SHOP LAUNDRY MACHINES Washer and Dryer Unit, $1259

    16Customize Storage

Bespoke built-ins, storage nooks, and furniture tailored to your exact needs can utilize every available sliver of space. When they're part of the walls, you don't lose nearly as much valuable square footage. And extra storage under a bench helps, too.

    SHOP BENCHES Storage Bench, $449

    17Create Zones

In interior designer Max Sinsteden's studio, he made his sleep zone feel separate from the rest of the room by hanging a super high curtain and then suspending a floating painting to break it off even more. "I hate seeing a bed from the front door, so I added a curtain to partition that space. When you close it, you honestly feel like you're in a Parisian hotel," he tells us. This means you can entertain, too, without feeling like everyone's hanging out in your bedroom. "A small space doesn't hamper me from inviting 50 people over."

SHOP CEILING TRACKS Ceiling Track, $90

    18Use All Available Surface Space

Even a windowsill can provide extra storage space for decor, lighting, and other essentials when there's no room for an extra table.

    SHOP SHELVES Floating Shelf, $20

    19Get a Wall Desk

Think you have no room for an office? Think again. A mounted wall desk takes up way less roomand you can even mount shelves above it for even more storage space. Designer Tariq Dixon transformed an unused corner by installing a wall-mounted desk.

    SHOP DESKS Floating Desk, $65

    20Use Strategic Seating

Opt for extra seating that can fold up and be super compact so you can store it away while the guests aren't over. A stool like this one in a living room designed by Hecker Guthrie is perfect.

SHOP STOOLS Royal Design Folding Stool, $136

    21Use Bigger (But Fewer) Furnishings

It may seem counterintuitive, but outfitting a small space with just a few large-scale pieces (rather than a mishmash of pint-size furniture) can actually make it feel grander. Resist the urge to push all of your furniture up against the walls. If you create space behind the furniture, it makes the room look wider than it is.

SHOP BED FRAMES Canopy Bed, $1,299

22Go Big in a Small Space

It's easy to overlook a room when it's super tiny, especially because there simply isn't enough useable space for dcor. But it's definitely possibleand well worth itto elevate and personalize these little rooms. Take this powder room in Ailana Michelle Ralph's home, for example. With a light blush pink wall color and a surrounding gallery of eclectic artwork, the small room packs a lot of punch.

    SHOP FRAMES Gilt Frame, $39

    23Think Vertical

Exploit the often under-utilized space between the tops of furniture and a room's ceiling with hanging or high-mounted elements. Take bookcases and cabinets all the way upit'll make the room feel higher.

    SHOP CABINETS Kitchen Cabinets, $489

    24Forgo Bulky Pieces

Though the under-the-sink storage can be great, larger vanities with a lot of drawers and cabinets can end up looking oversized and awkward in small spaces. In this bathroom designed by Studio DB, the dainty marble vanity has plenty of surface space and the extra towel tracks and hooks take care of the storage needs.

SHOP TOWEL BARS Towel Bar, $50

    25Build a Partial Glass Wall

Tear down walls, enlarge windows, or swap solid doors for glass to open up views and connect adjacent spaces.

SHOP HARDWARE Glass Door Sliding Track, $200

    26Incorporate Good Lighting

Good lighting will make or break any roombig or small. Make sure to especially install good lighting in smaller, cramped spaces like a bathroom with a tiny window, as shown in this gorgeous space.

SHOP LIGHTS Mount Ceiling Light, $23

    27Edit Yourself

You don't have to display everything. After all, nothing makes a room feel smaller than clutter.

    SHOP SHELVES White Shelf, $397

Find Antiques and Modern Touches in This Art Collector’s Dream Home – D Magazine

    - January 25, 2022 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lizzie and Dan Routman had no plans to leave their Bluffview home of 21 years. Besides being spacious and beautiful, with a sizable yard, the house had sentimental value, tooit was where the couple had raised their two daughters.

But a quick zip through Zillows latest listings a couple of years ago presented an intriguing alternative for the now empty nesters. Tucked away on a secluded street, on a bluff overlooking Turtle Creek, a contemporary stunner designed by influential architect Bud Oglesby caught the couples eye. You walk in, and theres all this natural light and lots of windows, Lizzie says of the 1988-built house. So its very welcoming, but its clean and contemporary.

Originally designed for a pair of art collectors, the 5,000-square-foot residence also had plenty of art walls, a feature that appealed to the Routmans as they, too, collect art.

Before the couple closed the deal on the house, however, they asked architect Russell Buchanan to take a look at it as well. As great as it was, the home hadnt been updated since the 80s, so they wanted to get a professional opinion. Buchanan confirmed what the Routmans had suspected: the house had exceptional bones, and with just a few fixes, it could soon be ideal for the downsizing couple.

To complete their dream design team, Lizzie and Dan enlisted interior designer Wendy Konradi, who had done some work on their previous home, and builder Bert Smith to work alongside Buchanan. Then they tasked the trio with, among other things, completely remodeling two main spaces: the kitchen and the primary suite.

The kitchen was a very small space for the scale of the home, yet there were very interesting details that Bud Oglesby had originally designed for the house, Konradi says, the best one being a full-height window that overlooks Turtle Creek.

Originally, a set of glass upper cabinets floated in front of the window, offering a clear view of the outdoors. The Routmans loved the concept but felt a little bit like they were in a fishbowl. Buchanans solution: trade the glass cabinets for white oak to create more practical storage and to keep the homeowners from feeling like they were on display. It was very much respecting the original architecture but making it work better for the new homeowners, Konradi says.

To maximize the kitchens footprint, Buchanan removed an existing fireplace and relocated a nearby laundry room to the second floor. Then, to finish the space, Konradi and project manager Ashley Hunt opted for stainless steel countertops for the Bulthaup cabinetry and cork floors that extended into the adjoining breakfast nook. Cork is so soft underfoot, Konradi says. And with tho- se stainless countertops, its such a nice contrast.

Like the kitchen, the primary bedroom and bathroom also had to be gutted, but unlike the cramped cookery, the two private spaces were bigger than they needed to be. The bathroom area was especially cavernous, so much so that the remodeled space now houses a utility room, an exercise room, dual closets, and a spa-like wet room that Konradi clad in an eye-catching terrazzo, including the walls, floor, and tub surround.

In the bedroom, the design team added a dividing wall between the sleeping area and sitting area, transforming what was once an oversize single space into two separate and intimate spaces. To up the coziness quotient even further, Konradi wrapped the entire bedroom in a soothing blue fabric. The room just cocoons you in this wool flannel wall upholstery that is so serene, she says.

For the rest of the house, Konradi focused on adding color and texture throughout, as well as integrating Lizzie and Dans various collections. They didnt want it to feel like they were in a museum, the designer says, but we were very conscientious that nothing competed with the artwork.

In addition to art, the couple has been collecting exquisite furnishings for many years. Theyve also inherited several outstanding pieces, including a pair of Ward Bennett Scissor chairs that Konradi refinished and reupholstered. We didnt buy everything brand new for this home. We reimagined a lot, Konradi says. So its created this wonderful layered effect, and it gives the home such soul.

To keep a room feeling fresh, Konradi looks to the past and present, incorporating pieces from various eras. I think its a testament to good design when you cant differentiate a space or piece of furniture that is 100 years old versus something contemporary thats being executed today, she says. In the Routman house, Konradis eye for combining items from different time periods is on full display in the breakfast nook (below), where a pair of chairs designed in 2010 share space with a coffee table from 1947all resting in a brand-new Bulthaup kitchen. The space isnt staid or stuck in any one era, she says. These pieces can have this fun coexistence. That happened a lot throughout the home. Thats the fungetting that magic in the mix and making these pieces work together.
