Villanova Schedule Preview: Early games and Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic – VU Hoops

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Happy Monday, VUHoops! We are back with our quick preseason previews before the season kicks off next Tuesday. As always, we will have full and in-depth previews for each opponent as the games approach but right now we plan to squeeze content like water from a stone.

The early takeaway from Villanovas first two weeks of the season is that it is chock full of chances to secure incredibly impressive wins that are likely to age well as the season goes along. The challenge with putting together a non-conference schedule as we know is hoping that, when the games come around, the opponents are potential Quad-1 wins. This year, Villanova will face #2 UCLA, #18 Tennessee, and then one of either #19 UNC/#7 Purdue four Top 25 teams - all before Thanksgiving.

Get ready for the Villanova Basketball season with fresh new Nike gear!

But, scared money dont make no money. Lets roll!

Head Coach: Dan Engelstad (3rd season)Previous Season Record: 12-11, 9-7 NEC Lost to Texas Southern in the First FourKey Players: Nanu Opoku, Malik Jefferson, Mezie OffurumKey Departures: Damian Chong Qui (transferred to Purdue Fort Wayne)

Date: Tuesday, November 9, 4:30 p.m. (Finneran Pavilion)

Preview: Villanova will kick off the 2021-2022 season with a match-up against the Mount St. Marys Mountaineers at the Pavilion on Tuesday, November 9. The Mountaineers, out of the NEC, made some noise in last years conference tournament upsetting both #1 Wagner and #2 Bryant to punch a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. While the Mountaineers were ultimately bounced by Texas Southern in the First Four, the team returns most of last years squad and has designs on once again challenging Bryant and Wagner for the NEC crown.

As for style of play, this is a great match-up for Villanova. The Mountaineers play at an excruciatingly slow pace and finished #355 (out of #358 teams!) in AdjTempo last year. Led by the 69 Opoku, 69 Jefferson, and 68 Offurum, the Mounties prefer to pound the ball inside and play strong defense on the glass. The Mount finished Top-50 in most of the defensive metrics but was hampered by a predicable and one-dimensional offensive attack. Its hard to imagine a situation where Mt. St. Marys is able to score enough points to beat Villanova, even if the Cats get off to the slow start. If the Cats can establish the outside shot early and eliminate the Mountaineers strength under the glass this one will likely be a snoozer.

Head Coach: Mick Cronin (3rd season)Previous Season Record: 22-10, 13-6 PAC 12 Lost to Gonzaga in the Final FourKey Players: Johnny Juzang, Tyger Campbell, Cody Riley, Jaime JaquezKey Departures: Jalen Hill, Chris SmithNew Additions: Peyton Watson

Date: Friday, November 12, 11:30 p.m. (ugh) (Pauley Pavilion)

Preview: Jeez, talk about switching gears. After (hopefully) dispatching the Mountaineers, the Cats will hop on a plane, fly 3,000 miles, and take on #2 UCLA in a game that tips off at 11:30pm EST (#VUHoopsAfterDark). If the Cats can escape with a win, it could go unmatched in terms of NCAA Tournament non-con resumes come March.

We all remember UCLAs Cinderella run last March. The Bruins entered the NCAA Tournament as an 11-seed after an up-and-down regular season that ended with four straight losses. From there, UCLA picked off Michigan St., Alabama, and Michigan en route to the programs 19th Final Four appearance. Ultimately, the Bruins were clipped by Gonzaga in an epic overtime semi-final game.

Now, Mitch Cronin returns the bulk of his squad and enters the season with sky-high expectations. While youll stumble across articles wondering if UCLA is really a Top-2 team or whether their March performance has blinded people as to still-lingering issues, the talent is clearly there.

Obviously, Villanovas primary concern with be Johnny Juzang who, with Collin Gillespie, was named a pre-season All-American and is the face of this Bruin squad. Hes an electric scorer with the ball in his hands and averaged 23 points per game in the NCAA Tournament last year. Juzang is joined by elite point guard Tyger Campbell and sniper Jaime Jaquez. In sum, this game has been circled on the Wildcats schedule since it was announced. While we will delve into the nitty gritty of this one as it gets closer, the Cats have a chance to grab a big time win on a big time stage all before the season hits its second week!

Head Coach: Kenny Blakeney (2nd season)Previous Season Record: 1-4 (remainder of season canceled)Key Players: Steve Settle III, Khalil Robinson, Kyle FosterKey Departures: Makur Maker

Date: Tuesday, November 16, 6:30 p.m. (Finneran Pavilion)

Preview: So, it is a little difficult to fully preview this match-up given that the Howard Bison only played 5 games last year before the school elected to cancel the remainder of the season. Villanova was actually scheduled to play Howard last year a game that had gained significant buzz due to the presence of Makur Maker, the highest recruit to ever commit to a HBCU. However, the game never took place and after playing in just two games, Maker was sidelined with a groin injury. He thereafter left Howard and is presently with the Sydney Kings of NBL.

Howard University is a historically black research university located in Washington D.C. Jay Wright has never played Howard but Villanova holds 2-0 advantage over the Bison with the last game coming in 1998. The Bison are coached by former DeMatha Catholic player and Duke national champion (1991) Kenny Blakeney.

Head Coach: Rick Barnes (6th season)Previous Season Record: 18-9, 10-7 SEC (lost to Oregon State as a 5-seed)Key Players: John Fulkerson, Victor Bailey, Josiah-Jordan James, Santiago VescoviKey Departures: Keon Johnson, Jaden Springer, Yves PonsNew Additions: Kennedy Chandler, Justin Powell

Date: Saturday, November 20, 1:00 p.m. (Mohegan Sun Arena)

Preview: Tennessees calling card last year was its smothering defense. The Vols finished the year Top-5 in AdjD and top 30 in nearly every defensive metric. They generated the 13th most turnovers in the country and were top-15 in blocks. Put simply, the Vols defense was lethal within the arc. However, the offense was inconsistent and anemic, which led to up-and-down season with the Vols finishing 18-9 and ultimately being bounced as a 5-seed by Oregon State in the NCAA Tournament.

This year, the Vols have bolstered their offense with 5-star point guard Kennedy Chandler and the addition of Justin Powell, a transfer from Auburn. With Santiago Vescovi shooting from deep, the Vols will look to open up the floor and space shooters. While Tennessees defense should still remain a force, the loss of SEC all-defensive player Yves Pons will require an adjustment, especially early in the season. Ultimately, this looks like a game where Villanova benefits from catching Tennessee early in the year as it could shape up to be an impressive win if the Cats can pull it out.

Head Coach: Hubert Davis (1st season)Previous Season Record: 18-11, 10-6 ACC (lost to Wisconsin as an 8-seed)Key Players: Caleb Love, Armando Bacot, Leaky Black, Kerwin WaltonKey Departures: Walker Kessler, Garrison Brooks, DayRon SharpeNew Additions: Dawson Garcia (transfer from Marquette), Brady Manek (transfer from Oklahoma), Justin McKoy (transfer from Virginia)

Date: Sunday, November 21, TBD (Mohegan Sun Arena)

Preview: Ole Roy is gone and the Wildcats will get their first shot at new UNC head coach Hubert Davis should the teams meet in the title game of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. I think the obvious headline for UNCs roster this year is the amount of talented transfers that joined the Tar Heels this offseason. All three, specifically Garcia and Manek, project to play big roles this season alongside Caleb Love, Leaky Black, Kerwin Walton, and Armando Bacot.

Tar Heels fans have high expectations for Love, who struggled last year in his freshman season, and they hope he can develop into a strong facilitator for Armando Bacot, the 610 beast down low. This is another game where Villanova benefits from seeing this team early. With a new coach and three transfers, the Tar Heels will likely have some growing pains early on. However, UNC projects to be fighting with the Duke Blue Devils for ACC supremacy by the end of the year.

Head Coach: Matt Painter (17th season)Previous Season Record: 18-10, 13-6 Big 10 (lost to North Texas as a 4-seed)Key Players: Trevion Williams, Eric Hunter, Brandon Newman, Sasha Stefanovic, Mason Gillis, Jaden IveyKey Losses: Aaron WheelerNew Additions: Caleb Furst,Trey Kaufman-Renn

Date: Sunday, November 21, TBD (Mohegan Sun Arena)

Preview: While the game against UCLA grabbed the scheduling headlines, this potential match-up against Purdue might be the true gem. Purdue is getting some early buzz as a sleeper national champion pick given the fact that Matt Painter returns nearly every piece of last years squad that earned a 4-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Nova fans will recall that the Boilermakers were picked off by North Texas, setting up a match-up with last years Wildcats.

Led by 610 forward Trevion Williams, the Boilermakers finished Top-25 in AdjO and AdjD last season with impressive wins over Wisconsin and Ohio State (twice). Purdue plays slow (278th) and is not much of a threat from deep. Williams will be a challenge for a Villanova team without Jeremiah Robinson-Earl but, if the Cats can make someone else beat them, they have a shot at a win that will age like a fine wine.

    Breaking News – "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia" Record-Breaking 15th Season Premieres December 1st | TheFutonCritic.com – The Futon…

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

    "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"Record-Breaking 15th SeasonPremieres December 1st

Seasons 15 Launches Sunny Into the Record Books as the Longest-Running Live-Action Comedy Series in Television History

More Than 1.8 Billion Hours Viewed Since Sunny's Series Premiere in 2005

LOS ANGELES, November 3, 2021 - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's record-breaking 15th season will premiere Wednesday, December 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FXX, and stream the next day on FX on Hulu.

The premiere will include the first two episodes of the 15th season, which makes Sunny the longest-running live-action comedy series in television history, bypassing The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet. Sunny's remarkable run has also racked up more than 1.8 billion hours viewed since its premiere in 2005.

    10:00 PM...

    On a Wednesday...

    In Ireland.

The record-breaking 15th season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is its most ambitious yet. In the seismic wake of Covid-19 and all things 2020, The Gang stands at a crossroads in this strange new world. The rules are changing quicker than anyone can keep up with, despite herculean efforts from "Mac" (Rob McElhenney), "Charlie" (Charlie Day), "Dennis" (Glenn Howerton), "Dee" (Kaitlin Olson) and "Frank" (Danny DeVito) to continue business as usual. Now, they must face the music and decide who they'll become in the cultural upheaval that is 2021. Across the span of eight episodes - and the Atlantic Ocean - we find them answer in a way only they could think to.

Like a fine Irish whiskey, Sunny's distinct flavor has gotten richer and intensified through the years. First barreled in 2005, the show has become a landmark for dark comedy and American satire, uniting the most devoted of fans from all over the country and abroad, and this monumental 15th season is truly one to crack open and celebrate. Continuing to deliver some of the hardest laughs on television while tackling society's most pressing issues, Sunny turns its fearless focus both outward and inward: to a national and international level but also to a deeply personal level. This is a season that sees The Gang try to exploit pandemic aid, sidestep cancel culture, evade criminal justice, reflect on their origins, and reconcile their identities and homeland roots.

Oh, and did we mention this is season 15? Sunny now breaks the record and becomes the longest-running live-action sitcom of all time. The show is executive produced by McElhenney (creator), Day, and Howerton, along with David Hornsby, Megan Ganz, Rob Rosell, Nick Frenkel, and Michael Rotenberg. None of this could be possible without the unyielding faith and courage of FX, who took a gamble on a small, homegrown show and now have cultivated one of the most vital, boundary-breaking comedies in American history.

So, raise that snifter and cheers: To Sunny! Yes, it burns a little, and that's what you want.

The Untold Truth Of Flight Of The Navigator – Looper

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mark H. Baker was a UCLA film student who came up with the initial story of what eventually became "Flight of the Navigator." The idea for his very first screenplay came from a dream, and was originally entitled "Vanished." In the 2020 documentary "Life After the Navigator,"Baker explained the project's origin story. "It was [originally] more of a serious film. In my story, they build the ship from his memory, so they're experimenting with technology that they don't understand but David does, and it gets to a point where he realizes they're never going to let him go."

At one point, Brian de Palma had interest in directing it; John Avildsen of "Rocky" and "Karate Kid" fame later became attached as the helmer, before "Grease" and "Blue Lagoon" lenser Randal Kleiser got the call.

The film's theme, tone and script ended up a tug-of-war between the two companies involved in its production Mark Damon's Producer Sales Organization and Disney."There were two companies that made it, Producer Sales Organization and Disney," director Kleiser recalled in 2020. "Producer Sales Organization was an action movie place, they wanted to have governments trying to shoot down the spaceship and chases and things like that and Disney wanted to concentrate on the family story, so guess who won!"

In the end, Kleiser would say,"the compromises [between PSO and Disney] made the movie better."

Writer Baker reflected: "Most of the elements that I had in my film were in the final film, but it's the changes that really make it different."

Two additions did come from Kleiser himself, who dropped in references to a pair of pop culture classics he had worked on: "Starsky and Hutch," and "Grease" (via "You're The One That I Want," which can be heard on a radio).

Breaking News – BET Studios in Partnership with Klutch Sports Group Present "KLUTCH Academy" | TheFutonCritic.com – The Futon Critic

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

BET STUDIOS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH KLUTCH SPORTS GROUP PRESENT "KLUTCH ACADEMY" -- A NEW ORIGINAL FIVE-PART DOCUMENTARY SERIES EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY KLUTCH CEO RICH PAUL, KENYA BARRIS' KHALABO INK SOCIETY AND TOLLIN PRODUCTIONS

Premiering November 23 at 11PM/10c on BET, the Unscripted Series will Follow Six NBA Hopefuls on their Journey to the Draft and Off Season

NEW YORK, NY - November 3, 2021 - BET Studios, in partnership with Rich Paul and KLUTCH Sports Group, present a new original documentary series, "KLUTCH Academy" - a five-part unscripted series to be executive produced by Paul and his KLUTCH Originals banner, Kenya Barris, and the creative team behind the award-winning docuseries The Last Dance, Mike Tollin and Jon Weinbach. "KLUTCH Academy" documents KLUTCH Sports Group - led by CEO Rich Paul - as they prepare six college basketball prospects for pro careers. These talented athletes possess the potential to be stars in the league but will need to work through areas of improvement on and off the court to achieve success and one day reach superstardom. Each one-hour episode will candidly reveal what players and agents experience in the process leading up to the Draft - and showcase that KLUTCH is more than an agency... it's a tightknit group dedicated to developing young men for life in the NBA and beyond. "KLUTCH Academy" premieres November 23 at 11pm ET/10c on BET.

"With Kenya Barris, Rich Paul, Mike Tollin and Jon Weinbach all on board for KLUTCH Academy, we couldn't have hoped for a better inaugural project for BET Studios," said Aisha Summers Burke, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of BET Studios. "The BET Studios venture is all about giving creators an opportunity to tell stories that have yet to be told, and KLUTCH Sports has a remarkable background and history that we know will resonate with our audiences, which is why we're so glad the series found its home right here on BET."

"These young men work their entire lives to get a shot at becoming a professional athlete, and at KLUTCH we invest the time and care to help them succeed not only as players, but as human beings prepared to meet all of life's challenges," said Paul. "It's an honor to work with Kenya and BET to share our rookies' powerful stories, and I'm excited for audiences to get a glimpse at the incredible work my team does every day to help athletes achieve and sustain success."

"There is no denying the impact that Rich has had. He and the Klutch Team have pushed boundaries and completely shifted the narrative," Barris commented. "And while buzzwords like disruptor and super agent are fitting, it's the work that they do with these young men, behind the scenes and off-the-court, that is the most impressive and I'm excited for viewers to get a glimpse beyond the headlines into that part of their story."

"KLUTCH Academy" will give audiences a 'courtside' seat to the progression these young athletes undergo as they transition from college into the pros - from signing with an agent to training for pro competition to Draft day anxiety and off-season preparation to managing personal relationships and the challenges young Black men in their unique circumstances face. The show will also pay tribute to Terrence Clarke, who tragically passed away the day after signing with KLUTCH. The cast features a roster of talent who recently had their lives changed being drafted into the NBA.

Brandon Boston Jr. - A former University of Kentucky Forward from small-town Norcross, Georgia, Brandon was selected as the 51st pick by the LA Clippers. The loss of his best friend and college teammate Terrence Clarke in a tragic car accident weighs heavily on Brandon, but also drives him to stay focused and make the most of the opportunity to realize his childhood dream.

Kai Jones - Hailing from the tiny island of the Bahamas, this former University of Texas Forward was selected 10th by the Charlotte Hornets. At 6-foot-11, Kai is the tallest of the KLUTCH prospects, but he's not nearly "NBA big" yet. He must add weight and show his team he can compete against the world's best players, has the discipline to work in the weight room and will be ready when his number is called.

Jalen Johnson - A year ago, Jalen was projected the potential number one overall pick of the 2021 Draft. After leaving Duke University, one of college basketball's iconic programs, questions surfaced about his maturity. But Jalen's older brother relocated to help him navigate the process of turning pro and is learning everything he can from Rich and the KLUTCH team about managing the day-to-day of NBA pros. Jalen was drafted as the 20th pick by the Atlanta Hawks.

Moses Moody - Moses had an excellent freshman season at Arkansas, and his combination of size and shooting ability placed him on numerous pro scouts' radar. Now more than ever - after being selected 14th by the Golden State Warriors - he feels the pressure of being the one who will change his family's future forever.

Jericho Sims - A breakout performance at this year's combine trended Sims's draft stock upwards. His 44.5-inch vertical leap (the third highest in NBA Combine history) caught the eyes of NBA scouts and the KLUTCH team. But physicality is simply one phase of a player's game - selected 58th to the New York Knicks, Jericho faces the challenge of breaking out of his shell to impress NBA front office staff.

Scottie Lewis - As a top-rated high school player, Scottie was projected to be a future first-round Draft pick, but a few lackluster seasons at the University of Florida caused doubts about his game. Redemption came in the 2021 NCAA tournament with a stellar performance that turned his fortune around. Picked 56th to the Charlotte Hornets, Scottie will need to work extra hard to prove he has what it takes to make it in the league.

Terrence Clarke - Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Terrence was an accomplished athlete, son, brother, and friend who touched the lives of everyone he encountered. A top prospect from the University of Kentucky, the KLUTCH team and prospects are devastated by his tragic passing but work side by side with his family to make sure his legacy lives on forever.

"KLUTCH Academy" is executive produced by Rich Paul and Fara Leff for KLUTCH Originals, the production arm of KLUTCH Sports Group; Mike Tollin and Jon Weinbach serve as Executive Producers; Kenya Barris serves as Executive Producer through his company Khalabo Ink Society; Tiffany Lea Williams serves as Executive Producer for BET; Mike Gleaton serves as Executive Producer and Showrunner.

Gabby Petitos tragic story sheds light on the grim reality of turning your life into a business – News Nation USA

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gabby Petito speaks to the camera in her only YouTube upload

    YouTube/Nomadic Statik

On October 21, after a nearly six-week manhunt, the FBI confirmed that skeletal remains found in a Florida nature preserve were those of Brian Laundrie. As the days turn to weeks since Laundries whereabouts were uncovered, its become apparent that this grim resolution to one outstanding question is no match for the publics fascination in the murder of Gabby Petito.

From the moment 22-year-old Petito was reported missing by her family in early September, the aspiring vanlife influencer became a real-time fixture of the true crime content mill. The phenomenon was accelerated by the subsequent discovery of her body in a Wyoming campsite, which implicated Laundrie, Petitos fiance and travel companion at the time of her death, as a person of interest in the investigation. But even before an autopsy determined that Petito had died by strangulation a common indicator of intimate partner violence the relationship appeared central to online outpourings of concern and speculation.

There are numerous likely reasons for the publics preoccupation with the case, including the well-established facts of Petitos youth and blonde-haired whiteness. Among the scores of mostly white, mostly 20-something women on TikTok whove taken up the mantle of #justiceforgabby, Petitos purported relatability is one oft-repeated refrain. While its tempting to dismiss these claims of personal identification with Petito as flimsy efforts to justify exploiting a womans death for content, it seems disingenuous to presume that thats all there is to it.

In many respects, Petitos heart-wrenching story speaks to the central tension in digital age constructions of identity. What passes for authenticity online is, more accurately, the convincing commitment to a bit. An influencers digital presence is effectively a character based on its creator, a work of internet autofiction. If the persons offline circumstances are at odds with their broadcasted persona, upholding the act may occur at the expense of the creators wellbeing.

Like so many young women hoping to amass followings online, Petito had been trying to find her voice along the two parallel circuits of a young influencers domain: as an adult making her way in the world and as an aspirational figure by trade. She was, in other words, working toward cementing the pillars that are broadly understood as prerequisites for mature adulthood: an enduring romantic partnership and a fruitful career. Tragically, Petitos path positioned her relationship to Laundrie as the vehicle for both.

The potential hazards imposed on the couple-as-influencer are self-evident. Simply, a monetized relationship discourages each partners disentanglement. For young women, in particular, the adjacent risks can be profound. They are the combined pitfalls of coming of age at this specific moment in time, while inheriting the time-worn legacy of violence that womanhood too often entails especially, but not exclusively, for women with additional marginalized identities.

From the beginning, the Petito case has given a face to the worst-case scenario for the widespread ideal of the influencer couple. And, perhaps, marked an inflection point in the way that this ideal is perceived.

From the hipster Mormon housewife bloggers of the early 2010s to the van life vloggers courting corporate sponsorships today, happy couples have served as more than a recurring set piece in the influencer industrial complex. Picture-perfect partnership and, eventually, family life form the basis of a lucrative market fantasy. These idealized, archetypal personas are too #blessed to stress about unpaid bills or unmet desires, let alone anything more nefarious. They want for nothing they cant materialize into being; their apparent lack of yearning inspires yearning, in turn.

It wasnt so long ago that the bankability of relationship-centric, lifestyle creator content became understood by the general public. Writing in 2015 about the lifestyle blogger-turned-influencer Naomi Davis for The Cut, Jen Gann recalls her delayed realization that Davis blog, Love Taza, was less a public-facing diary of contented homemaking than a savvy commercial enterprise. I felt stupid for not realizing how successful Naomis blog is, Gann writes. She, not her husband, was financially supporting their lifestyle with her lifestyle blog.

Nearly seven years later, the concept of the influencer has become so embedded within the collective imagination that Ganns revelation reads like the relic of a distant era. Among my fellow millennial and Gen Z counterparts, its now taken for granted that any social media personality with a robust follower count and the barest modicum of conventional attractiveness is likely getting some monetary kickback for their outfits of the day. The division between an aspirational life and an aspirational performance of one is more porous than ever before.

In a recent column for TechCrunch, the writer Safy-Hallan Farah argues that the ability to monetize ones social media following is no longer incidental to an influencers appeal; it is their appeal. Fans look up to [lifestyle influencers] not only because they want to live the same way but because they [also] want to monetize their own lives, Farah writes. Somewhere over the course of the past decade, fulfilling the criteria for a hashtaggable #lifestyle carving out a presence within an established sphere of influence has become as desirable as any actual lifestyle, in and of itself.

Its a feat thats easier said than done. Last month, Slates Heather Schwedel reported on the effect of Petitos death among members of TikToks #VanLife community. Some felt that the case underscored public misperceptions of the actual work involved in making a living as a semi-famous, sentient ad. People think that if they live in a van now, theyre just automatically going to get a following and be an influencer, said one 24-year-old woman.

Logistics notwithstanding, theres a major profit incentive for young couples to at least try figuring out the tricks of the influence trade. Early last year, the digital marketing trade publication MarTech Series declared that so-called power pairs stood at the forefront of a new wave of influencer marketing. Though the article focuses primarily on influencers who pair up to form a united mega-brand, it speaks to the basic logic of any influencer couples appeal: They embody happiness and romance, which most onlookers are content to experience even vicariously. As a result, couples have a distinct advantage in facilitating an emotional connection to [whatever] product or service they promote.

For young couples seeking to leverage their relationships for financial gain, the potential for harm is baked right into the premise. The relationship is no longer just a relationship, but a professional endeavor. To extract oneself means surrendering a path to solvency, even if that path has not yet proved fruitful. The dynamic is ripe for exploitation by perpetrators of abuse.

In a culture whose valorization of the nuclear family is rivalled only by its fetish for dollar-quantifiable achievement, the project becomes a compounded test of stick-to-it-iveness; endurance, an arbiter of work ethic. In this light, the tragedy of Petitos death takes on an almost unbearable poignance.

Roblox sheds more than $1.5 billion in market cap following outage that could have cost millions – MarketWatch

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Roblox Corp. was digging itself out Monday from a three-day outage that shut out millions of users, as investors wiped away more than $1.5 billion of the videogame companys market capitalization.

Roblox RBLX, -1.55% shares declined as much as 4% Monday, and closed down 3.4% at $81.14, after the company restored service to millions of users in an outage that started last Thursday and was resolved on Sunday. At 575 million shares outstanding, Mondays drop wiped away $1.66 billion in market cap.

Based on Robloxs last quarterly report, the company brought in $454.1 million, so three days of that would come out to around $15 million in lost revenue. Roblox last reported that 46.6 million people used the platform on a daily basis, and some of those users also derive income from offering their own experiences or wares within the game.

In a blog post on Sunday, Roblox Chief Executive David Baszucki said the outage had been especially difficult because it involved a combination of several factors.

Read: Facebook outage, by the numbers: Largest outage ever tracked could cost millions

A core system in our infrastructure became overwhelmed, prompted by a subtle bug in our backend service communications while under heavy load, Baszucki said. This was not due to any peak in external traffic or any particular experience.

In a Monday morning note, MKM analyst Mike Hickey said it was important Roblox made the distinction that the outage wasnt due to any one factor, as many users suspected that a Halloween Boorito event on the platform involving a giveaway of $1 million in free burritos from Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. CMG, -1.25% was at fault.

Rather the failure was caused by the growth in the number of servers in our datacenters, Baszucki in the blog post. The result was that most services at Roblox were unable to effectively communicate and deploy.

Baszucki said the company would publish a post-mortem of the outage once it had finished its analysis.

On Monday, a Roblox spokesperson confirmed to MarketWatch that the company did not have any more details to share outside of Baszuckis blog post.

Roblox is next scheduled to report quarterly results on Nov. 8. Shares are 80% above their reference price of $45 set back in March when the companys stock began trading.

"State of the Community Luncheon" sheds light on Spearfish promise, issues – KNBN NewsCenter1 – Newscenter1.tv

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

The luncheon allowed community members to hear the good, bad and the ugly from the mouths of city, chamber, education and Lawrence County leaders.

SPEARFISH, S.D. Spearfish community members were able to hear from the mouths of city, chamber, education and Lawrence County leaders the lowdown in a State of the Community luncheon on Tuesday.

A meal that highlighted growth in many areas of Spearfish including major areas like housing.

We have already surpassed previous records in building and development, said Spearfish Mayor Dana Boke. You know we have 105 new homes scheduled to be built in this year alone.

Mayor Boke shared at the luncheon the following figures for building and growth, especially building permit evaluations:

According to Mayor Boke, 95 new residential structures were built in 2021 for a total value of $36.7 million, which equals out to each home costing roughly $386,000 to build. Seven commercial structures were also built in Spearfish, for a total value of $13.5 million.

In her presentation, Mayor Boke highlighted the growth of Spearfishs population, which grew roughly 16 percent from 2010 to 2020 (10,494 to 12,193 according to the 2020 census.) That was slightly lower than what Spearfish, according to Mayor Boke has seen in the past with a 20 percent growth over ten years being the norm.

Mayor Boke also shared that the YTD Sales Tax Revenue is up 18 percent for the year so far at $4.4 million.

Black Hills State University reported some positivity with its Strategic Enrollment plan and a new Title Three Grant worth $2.2 million grant that will help pay for the plan. BHSU also highlighted five different partnerships including:

Spearfish is facing its share of issues.

Like a nearly two percent overall drop in enrollment at Black Hills State University, which is highlighted by a Native American population at BHSU thats been cut in half in the last two years.

We really, truthfully are down nearly 50 percent, said BHSU President Dr. Laurie Nichols. We lost about 20 percent one year, one year and then about 30 percent the next. So its been a dramatic hit on our Native American population.

Issues that also include a jail with a failing infrastructure and a lack of space that theyre hoping to be remedied by a $40 million expenditure in the future.

All of this is explained in Lawrence County Sheriff Brian Deans presentation that explained the hoops theyve jumped through to balance out the books.

Its important in a project of this size to establish what your what your budget is early on, so that you have a system of checks and balances that are integral to the process, Sheriff Dean said.

Student-Led Town Hall Sheds Light On Week 3 Progress of #BlackburnTakeover – The Hilltop Online

    - November 4, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Student leaders of the #BlackburnTakeover protest hosted a town hall on Sunday night that brought together up to 614 students, faculty, staff, alumni and community supporters, such as Rev. Jesse Jackson.

All came together to voice their concerns for the Universitys inability to acknowledge the issues that are being brought to light and the demands made by the protesters. Leaders Erica England and Channing Hill began the town hall by disclosing the experiences theyve had with housing insecurity, sickness and financial aid, and they confirmed that the reason theyre going to these extents are for the love of Howard and wanting to hold the University accountable.

We want to see Howard grow and flourish, but take care of every student that walks across the Yard, England said. We are working for the betterment of Howard University even if the administration doesnt want to admit it.

England said that the two sessions the #BlackburnTakeover team had with the Universitys legal counsel was unfruitful and did not include President Wayne A.I. Fredericks presence. Confirming Englands statement was the #BlackburnTakeover teams pro-Bono legal counsel and Howard University alumnus, Attorney Donald Temple.

We were told by the University counsel that the President was not going to negotiate with them, Temple explained.

Amplifying Englands sentiments, Temple expressed that the protesters intentions are pure and, as the saying goes, their demands are not demanding.

I urged with every ounce of my body that the administration negotiate with these students every piece of press that comes out about this is hurting the University, and we dont want to hurt the University, Temple said.

The University has yet to budge, saying that they are not willing to negotiate with the protesters nor grant them any form of amnesty, according to Attorney Temple.

Along with student leaders and their legal counsel, faculty representatives, alumni and alumni groups were present and spoke on the matters at hand.

The students have not exaggerated the experiences of students and faculty, Professor Marcus Alfred, an associate professor of physics and astronomy and faculty senate chair, said.

Professor Alfred also hinted at faculty bringing in millions of dollars of grants to the University for students, yet the University paid students late on the grants that many of them heavily relied on. Alumnus, former graduate research assistant and current adjunct lecturer Anthony Jackson and others commented that they were paid 2-4 months late.

Alumni organizations that attended and spoke at this town hall were Howard Alumni United and The Capstone Group, a stakeholders collective that was founded in response to the 2018 administration building takeover, according to member and alumna Maria P. Jones.

Jones urged alumni to get involved as best they can by assisting students with financial scholarships, housing and collective organizing. There were brief talks of an alumni gathering on campus in solidarity with student protesters.

Some, including Rev. Jackson, mentioned expanding the matter to a national level by getting Congress. Alumni K. Yvonne Lucas even suggested organizing a march from Howard to the Hill.

Though protesters have struggled to gain their in-person meeting with President Wayne A.I. Frederick, Rev. Jackson has been able to attend meetings with him to advocate on behalf of the student protesters. At his last meeting with the President, the activist was injured and rushed to the hospital.

While meeting with various administrators, including Dr. Wayne Frederick, Rev. Jackson sustained an injury upon entering the Blackburn Center, the University tweeted. We can confirm that Rev. Jackson was taken to the hospital by a university administrator and was later joined by Dr. Wayne Frederick, they said in a follow up tweet.

The #BlackburnTakeover team has received media coverage from various outlets and many members of the Howard community have banded together to provide them with necessary resources. The communitys support has kept them going, and, according to leaders, they will not be moved until their demands are met.

We will not bend, we will not fold until we get what we deserve, Aniyah Vines, a Howard University senior and leader in this movement, said.
