Wizards of the Coast announced a variety of new and returning cards for Magic: The Gathering in its upcoming set release, Dominaria United, on Thursday. Among these cards are six returning pain lands, a nickname theyve acquired for doing a point of damage to their controller anytime they are tapped for a color of mana.

Three of these six lands are entering Magics Pioneer format for the first time, signaling a new level of balance to the power level of three popular color combinations that have had to manage with a resource disparity since the formats inception in 2019.

Pain lands have existed in Magic since 1995, when five of them were introduced in the Ice Age set. Five more were printed in 2001s Apocalypse set, completing the land cycle for all 10 color pairs. Over the years, these lands have been reprinted periodically in various sets, sometimes all at once, other times in smaller groups, but have often remained a useful if not beloved resource for fans of two-or-more-color decks to smooth out color requirements at the relatively modest cost of one life per color of mana.

Although these lands have been around long enough that all 10 are legal to play in Magics bigger formats, such as Modern and Commander, thats not the case for all competitive players. Especially those playing Pioneer or Explorer.

To fully grasp the disparity in Pioneers available lands, it helps to understand a concept in the game called the color pie, a design philosophy that dictates what each of the games mana colors are able to do in various cards. The five colors form 10 pairs, and these 10 pairs are often separated into two groups enemy pairs and allied pairs. For instance, the allied pairs sit next to one another on the pie: white/blue, blue/black, black/red, red/green, and green/white. The remaining combinations, the enemy pairs, sit across from one another on the pie.

The last time pain lands were printed in a Magic Standard set was in the 2015 set Magic Origins, which only included the aforementioned enemy pairs. The remaining allied pairs havent seen a Standard reprint since 2007s Tenth Edition a full five years prior to Pioneers available cardpool, which starts with 2012s Return to Ravnica. In effect, this gives Pioneer decks built around the five enemy pairs a built in advantage over allied color decks, since the enemy pairs have more lands to choose from when looking for mana sources.

To make matters more difficult, even setting aside pain lands, the enemy color pairs have more lands to choose from because of other disparities among nonbasic lands available in Pioneer. Although Wizards has done a good job of representing all 10 color pairs in recent years, some of the sets that were released before Pioneer existed also contribute to this resource imbalance.

The other big example of this issue is seen in 2016s Kaladesh, which featured a cycle of five enemy dual lands known as fast lands, which earned their nickname because they enter the battlefield untapped if there are fewer than three other lands already under the players control. The five allied fast lands do exist, and were introduced in 2010s Scars of Mirrodin, but they havent been reprinted in a Standard set since, making them ineligible for Pioneer play. As a result, while most of the other popular dual land cycles that see Pioneer play are available across every color pair, its the absence of these 10 allied dual lands that give enemy colors an inherent advantage and can impact the competitive viability of nascent strategies that dont have access to these crucial resources.

Thats where Dominaria United comes in. Three of the five missing pain lands are finally entering the format, providing the red/black, blue/white, and red/green color pairs a new level of flexibility that can potentially introduce new decks to the format that previously struggled to keep up, or reinforce existing decks that had to make do with imperfect mana.

One way to predict the implications of these three new lands is comparing their color pairs against specific deck styles that dont currently exist in the format. For example, Pioneer has never had a consistent red/green ramp deck, sometimes known as red/green monsters. These types of decks are traditionally defined by cheap green ramp spells, including 1-mana green creatures, which produce extra mana early in the game that then accelerates the decks ability to cast bigger and more expensive red creatures that outclass an opponents strategy.

Since Pioneer has been so limited in red/green dual lands that can tap for both colors early and late in the game, a traditional monster ramp deck hasnt existed in these colors in the format. But the addition of Karplusan Forest in Dominaria United could finally change that, providing a new home for something as classic as Llanowar Elves to coexist with new Dominaria cards such as Squee, Dubious Monarch or Shivan Devastator in one aggressive deck.

In addition to the lands, theres one more iconic reprint in Dominaria United thats likely to make a big splash on Pioneer and to a certain extent, every format where its playable Liliana of the Veil. Over the years, this 3-mana planeswalker has been a dominating presence and staple across a variety of formats, but until now hasnt been available to Pioneer players.

Historically, Liliana fits into grindy and disruptive strategies known as midrange decks that prolong games with a steady stream of removal spells, hand disruption, cheap creatures, and sticky planeswalkers. When she appears in Modern midrange decks, she functions as the glue that provides a little extra support for whichever angle of attack the deck needs most to take over the game. Her +1 loyalty ability keeps cards out of opponents hands, her -2 helps keep the board clear, and if she sticks around long enough, her ultimate -6 ability essentially resets the game, making it near impossible to ever recover.

Midrange players will be particularly thrilled by her reprint since Pioneer already has a powerful red/black midrange strategy that most players agree is one of the top decks of the format. Liliana, coupled with the new red/black pain land, are easy additions to the red/black midrange deck thats currently dominating Pioneer and Explorer play. Of course the classic question that always comes up in these situations is, What do you take out to make room for Liliana? But theres very little room for doubt that she belongs in the deck and will be a new powerhouse in the format.

Dominaria United goes live on Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic: The Gathering Online Sept. 1, followed by its paper release Sept. 9.

Charlie Donadio, the president and owner of Rhode Island Fast Ferry, is making a Mayday call for help, but his vessels need employees, not a rescue.

We have immediate openings, Donadio said. We are looking for anybody with experience in boating, sailing, offshore fishing, or any type of maritime experience. This is a great opportunity for retirees, or for anybody who just likes working on the water.

His company provides high speed ferry service from Quonset Point in North Kingstown to Marthas Vineyard; offers Lighthouse Cruises and Newport Harbor Tours on Narragansett Bay; and Atlantic Wind Transfers, an offshore wind commercial services arm, operating crew transfer vessels for technicians and equipment servicing offshore wind farms all along the East Coast.

Rhode Island Fast Ferry is looking for seasonal (May-October) deckhands, deck bartenders, and mates for the Quonset to Marthas Vineyard fast ferry, and it has year-round openings for deckhands and mates on the crew transfer vessel that transports technicians to and from the Wind Farm off of Block Island.

We are struggling to find people to hire, just like many other businesses across the country, Donadio said. We are looking to train people who may want to grow with the company.

The company is offering a $300 sign-on bonus, he said.

Rhode Island Fast Ferry is the fastest growing marine transportation company in New England, Donadio said, operating three high-speed ferries and two offshore wind crew transfer vessels, with plans to expand. The company also charters their fast ferries to other ferry operators throughout the country and owns a Rhode Island PUC License to provide a new ferry service from Quonset Point to Old Harbor Block Island, although it has not started that service yet.

A new dating app is launching on the premise that "other dating apps have gone woke" and tech billionaire Peter Thiel just wrote a $1.5 million check into the startup.

The Right Stuff, a conservative dating app founded by Trump administration staffers John McEntee, Daniel Huff, and Isaac Stalzer, came out of stealth last week via a video posted by the company's spokesperson, Ryann McEnany, on Twitter.

The startup, which will launch in September, was founded as an antidote to "wokeness" that conservatives face on mainstream dating apps like Tinder and Hinge, McEnany said in the video.

McEntee, one of the cofounders, told Insider in an interview that the app is an opportunity to break into the massive dating-app market and cater to a population that he said is underserved by current offerings.

"We talked to our other conservative friends and then looked at it from the business standpoint that dating apps are super popular," he said. "They've only been growing and all of these different markets are being served, but one that's being underserved, obviously, is one that caters to conservatives. It hasn't been really tried before, so we're really excited about it."

On The Right Stuff, users can only identify themselves as male or female, or view profiles without pronouns, according to its site. Women on the app can earn a premium subscription by inviting friends to the platform, while men have to pay to access premium features, such as viewing more profiles, sending more likes to other users, and seeing all of their likes at once, McEntee said.

The company is helmed by a bevy of former Trump administration officials. McEntee served as the director of the Presidential Personnel Office towards the tail end of Trump's presidency. Daniel Huff was Trump's appointee to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, The Hill reported.Isaac Stalzer served as a senior advisor to the Small Business Administration under Trump, according to his LinkedIn profile.

McEnany, meanwhile, is the younger sister of former Trump press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany.

Amid the presidential elections of 2016 and 2020, dating apps started to cater to the political beliefs of users. Bumble, for instance, launched an election-themed filter in advance of the 2016 presidential election which allowed users to signify which candidate they were supporting.

The Right Stuff is the latest dating app catered to conservatives that has cropped up in recent years. Others include Righter and Donald Dater.

McEntee said that he and his cofounders had ambitions to create some sort of app after leaving the Trump administration, but that it was "extremely difficult" to connect with investors until they conceived The Right Stuff thanks to conversations with conservative women, and later partnered with Thiel.

Thiel has a long history of investing in startups that align with conservative values, which include Rumble, an online video platform popular with right-wing viewers, according to PitchBook data.

Schedule it for the wrong time of year and the sealant wont stick, wont bond, and wont be able to provide the extra layer of protection you are expecting. And then youll have to put the bill to remove the sealant and start all over again!

One of the biggest advantages of a properly sealed driveway is that its going to be able to shed water much more effectively.

Theres nothing that deteriorates a driveway faster than water, and even just the occasional rainstorm every now and again on an unprotected driveway can cause extreme damage and erosion more than you would probably expect.

Combine that with water working its way into the sub layers of your driveway because of cracks in the surface and then freezing over the winter and youre talking about a recipe for disaster.

Warm (but not hot), dry weather is best for this kind of work because it allows the sealant product to work itself deeper and deeper into the asphalt itself.

That kind of weather is going to be just warm enough to let the sealant fully spread everywhere, and if its followed by drive cool nights theyll be plenty of time for the asphalt sealant to cure and harden in place without being hurried along.

If at all possible, try and schedule this kind of project for late spring and early summer or late summer and early fall.

You want to try and avoid the wet season of early spring, not just because of the water that will be held in the ground from the snow melting in our area but also because of the springtime rainstorms that are so common.

Shoot for May or June and youll be able to avoid a lot of those rainstorms while at the same time getting the dry, warm days that arent scorching hot days that still have relatively cool nights that allow the product to cure in place.

If your schedule doesnt allow for a May or June project its a good idea to push this until late summer and early fall.

Real late August and throughout the month of September generally have the same kind of weather conditions youre looking for as May and June, allowing you to knock this kind project out without a lot of headache and without a lot of hassle.

When it comes to driveway alternatives, the average homeowner is usually unaware that such options exist. The standard concrete or asphalt driveway has long been the standard for residential and even rural homes. And, while these types of driveways have served their homeowners well up to this point, the need for alternative driveway solutions has become too strong to ignore.

This is because while asphalt, concrete, and other impervious types of driveways are somewhat durable and nice-looking, they pose many problems that can lead to an unsightly driveway, extra vehicle maintenance, injury, muddy messes, and other issues that the average family should not have to deal with.

There is no good reason to suffer from the plethora of problematic situations that an asphalt or concrete driveway can lead to when there are exceptional alternative driveway surfaces available. In case youre tired of dealing with your concrete driveway and you want to learn about driveway options other than concrete, here are some of the best alternatives to paved driveways we could find.

Brick has become a very popular concrete driveway alternative because it can be laid in such a manner that allows for the absorption of water between the bricks. This creates a somewhat permeable driveway that will allow stormwater to pass through it, preventing the development of mud puddles or giant ruts in your driveway.

One of the things that makes brick one of the best driveway paving alternatives is that it is less expensive than having an asphalt or concrete driveway poured and installed. Its also a bit more environmentally friendly and you can even include some pieces of natural stone in a brick driveway to create your own unique style.

This is one of the cheapest alternatives to asphalt driveways by far, costing very little to have installed. The average gravel driveway consists of hard, angular gravel laid throughout the driveway. Though loose gravel can tend to migrate away from your driveway over time due to traffic, this can be fixed by simply raking up the loose gravel and reapplying it to your driveway every now and then.

Gravel can be a somewhat permeable alternative to a concrete driveway, allowing some stormwater to pass through it. Gravel can be problematic if your driveway has more than a 7% slope to it but for level driveways, it makes an outstanding asphalt driveway alternative.

Permeable pavers combined with an aggregate like gravel are a great combination if youre looking for alternatives to paved driveways. Residential pavers like the kind offered by TRUEGRID will lock gravel in place, preventing it from spreading and also preventing you from ever having to reapply it.

The square, interlocking grids made from 100% recycled plastic are laid over a prepared, compacted subgrade made up of hard, angular gravel. They make for one of, if not the best, alternative driveway surfaces because of their makeup and structure.

One of the biggest reasons that permeable residential pavers from TRUEGRID make one of the best driveway material alternatives is because they cost very little to install, compared to other concrete driveway alternatives. They are also more durable than concrete, asphalt, and other driveway alternatives due to their patented flex joints. These allow the pavers to absorb and evenly distribute pressure throughout the grid because of the vertical compression strength and flexibility of the joints.

Because of the impervious, solid nature of concrete and asphalt, many people assume these types of driveways are longer-lasting, but this isnt the case. An alternative asphalt driveway like one built from permeable pavers will last anywhere from 25 to 60 years, depending on how much traffic it gets. This is because the recycled plastic they are made with is high-density polyethylene which has UV inhibitors added for additional protection from the sun.

You have a lot of options when it comes to alternative driveways. Paved driveway alternatives arent always cheap and temporary, some alternative driveway solutions are even more durable than concrete or asphalt. Brick is one of the alternatives to a concrete driveway that looks great and wont cost you much. It can be semi-permeable if laid over sand and comes in many styles.

Loose gravel makes for one of the cheapest driveway alternatives, though it can be high-maintenance when compared to other asphalt driveway alternatives. While it will be able to help with water drainage, ruts and mud holes can still occur if the gravel isnt regularly reapplied. In terms of alternative driveways, loose gravel is a good option but inferior to other paved driveway alternatives such as TRUEGRID permeable pavers.

Their interlocking plastic pavers are one of the best driveway material alternatives on the market due to their cost-effectiveness, ease-of-installation, and durability. In terms of driveway alternatives to paving, these pavers outperform traditional asphalt and concrete in terms of water-drainage as well as environmental-friendliness.

Looking for alternatives to asphalt driveway can seem like a chore, but going with TRUEGRID permeable pavers can allow you to put all the other driveway alternatives to concrete out of your mind. Their sheer superiority when it comes to permeability, durability, functionality, versatility, and length-of-life make residential pavers from TRUEGRID the number one option to consider when searching for a good alternative to an asphalt driveway.

Browsing through alternatives to paving a driveway doesnt mean you have to settle for less. Consider using the TRUEGRID permeable paving system and see for yourself why so many homeowners have chosen it instead of other driveway paving alternatives.

option for the base layer of a gravel driveway is item #4. Item #4 is comprised of sand, dirt, and golf ball-sized stones. This type of gravel is available in a few different variations including recycled item # 4, which is made up of recycled stones, brick, blacktop, concrete, and rock.

There is also quarry item # 4, or crushed limestone, gray item # 4 which appears dark grey in color, and crushed bluestone item #4. Crushed bluestone item #4 is usually found in municipal driveways, though.

The middle layer of a gravel driveway features stones closer to golf ball size, with #57 stone being the prominent type of gravel. Otherwise known simply as crushed gravel, #57 stone also helps promote drainage.

There isnt a lot of variety for the bottom layers of a gravel driveway, however, there are more options when it comes to finding the best gravel for driveway surfaces. Among the other options are crushed stone #411, quarry process, pea gravel, jersey shore gravel, marble chips, and river rock. These are the best options for driveway surfaces gravel, because they are small stones combined with rock dust, which makes a more solid driving surface.

It is crushed up #57 stone combined with rock dust. This mixture is able to handle moderate traffic from heavy vehicles.

It is also called crusher run and works well for the surface of both driveways and walkways. Its made from stone dust fines and crushed stone.

The stone dust will settle and become compact to create a semisolid surface that is smooth. It is important that you know that this type of surface gravel needs to be sloped towards the sides of your driveway for better drainage.

Pea gravel is popular gravel for driveway aesthetics. Its made up of round, small stones that can come in many different colors. This type of gravel will easily migrate and spread under the weight of vehicles, though, and needs to be stabilized for long-term, maintenance-free usage.

It is made of yellow, tan, white, gold, and brownstones and looks quite a bit like sand. Its similar to pea gravel since it needs borders or stabilizing pavers to prevent it from spreading.

Marble chips are white and they sparkle in the sunlight. They typically cost more than other gravel types but are another favorite when it comes to being the best gravel for driveway aesthetic appeal. This type of gravel also needs a border or stabilization to prevent it from spreading, migrating, and washing away.

Asphalt Paving Thickness - Is 2 Inches Enough for a Driveway?

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will temporarily close the westbound I-70 interchange ramps to southbound and northbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway outer and inner loops) in Woodlawn this weekend to allow pouring of new concrete pavement.

The westbound ramps from I-70 to the I-695 outer loop (Exit 91A) and the inner loop (Exit 91B) will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Motorists traveling westbound on I-70 to I-695 will be detoured onto the northbound Security Boulevard (MD-122) ramp toward Baltimore County, then back to I-695.

The ramp onto southbound Security Boulevard, toward Cooks Lane and Baltimore City, will remain open. There will be no access to westbound I-70 past the second ramp during the weekend. SHA advises motorists on westbound I-70 traveling from the park-and-ride lot to I-695 to plan for extra travel time within the interchange area.

Digital message boards, temporary traffic signs and cones will guide motorists through the detour route. In the event of inclement weather, the concrete work and detours will take place the following weekend from Aug. 26-29.

SHA will also be continuing its project to improve pedestrian access and safety along segments of MD-26 (Liberty Road) in Baltimore County.

Starting Friday, SHA will reconstruct concrete sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, curbs, gutters and driveway aprons from I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) to North Rolling Road where necessary to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and improve mobility for all travelers on Liberty Road.

Motorists should expect temporary single-lane closures along this segment of Liberty Road between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. Overnight work will also take place 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday into Friday. Work will continue through late fall, weather permitting.

SHA contractor Image Asphalt Maintenance, of Pasadena, will use electronic signs, cones and barrels to alert motorists and pedestrians of the work zone.
