Roofing manufacturer IKO breaks ground on Clay County production plant | Jax Daily Record – Jacksonville Daily Record

    - March 31, 2024 by Mr HomeBuilder

Representatives from global roofing manufacturer IKO Industries Ltd., Clay Countys Economic Development Corporation and the Clay County Board of County Commissioners broke ground March 27 on Clay Hill, a $270 million, 300,000-square-foot plant to make residential roofing products.

The manufacturing facility is on 80 acres east of U.S. 301, at County Road 218, about 10 miles south of Interstate 10.

IKO said it will create about 100 jobs and is hiring. The company said it will begin operating in mid-2025.

From left, Clay County Economic Development Corp. President Crawford Powell; U.S. House of Representatives District Director Bryan Campbell; Clay County District 3 County Commissioner Jim Renninger; IKO CEO David Koschitzky; IKO Vice President of Operations Guy Tremblay; and Clay Hill Plant Manager Daniel Lindhahl broke ground at the Clay Hill construction site March 27.

The first of three production lines will manufacture shingles.

IKO Corporate Communications Manager Derek Fee said the project will have an estimated economic impact of about $1.3 billion on Clay County.

Its the first time weve built down here, Fee said. It will support a growth market for us.

IKO, founded in 1954, is headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Most of its U.S. facilities operate in the Northeast, but it has operations in Texas and Alabama.

Clay Hill is the eighth shingle production line in IKOs North American manufacturing operations.

IKO paid $5.26 million in April 2023 for the 80 acres of timberland.

County commissioners approved incentives and a mobility fee exemption for the project in May 2023, which at the time was code-named Project Gator.

IKO Consultant Dan Redmond, left, and CEO David Koschitzky attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Clay Hill, the manufacturers first facility in Florida.

The impact in Clay County is huge, said Chereese Stewart, assistant county manager for the county commissioners.

Clay Hill Plant Manager Daniel Lindhahl relocated from Illinois for the job, but is from Clay County and attended Orange Park High School. He has worked for IKO for about 15 years.

We appreciate all of the support thats been given and provided for this project, Lindhahl said. Were looking forward to building a successful operation with the state of our equipment and putting together the best team of people in the area.

Weve already started recruiting and building that team. Were looking forward to building long-lasting relationships in the surrounding areas and well strive to be a great neighbor.

He called his role a dream. He has been at IKO for about 15 years.

I was made aware of this opportunity a couple of years back and its funny how things come full circle, Lindhahl said. Im glad to be back.

Construction continues at the Clay Hill IKO Industries Ltd. facility east of U.S. 301, at County Road 218, about 10 miles south of Interstate 10.

Trusted Roofing in Seattle and Surrounding Areas, Orca Roofing & Exteriors Offers Guidance to Extend a Roof’s Lifespan – GlobeNewswire

    - March 31, 2024 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bellevue, WA, March 29, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The average lifespan of most roofs ranges from 25-50 years, with certain materials like ceramic and clay tiles lasting up to a century. However, factors such as regional climate, roofing material, and installation quality significantly impact longevity. While homeowners may not control these variables, they can take proactive measures to extend their roof's lifespan through preventive maintenance measures.

Orca Roofing & Exteriors, a roofing company comprising a skilled team, shares some tips on preventive maintenance strategies and techniques aimed at extending the longevity of roofs.

Orca Roofing & Exteriors advises homeowners to regularly clean debris, algae, and mold from their roofs. This essential upkeep prevents water pooling, rot, and damage to roofing materials, ensuring the safety of the home and its occupants. Property owners can preserve their roofs through regular cleaning while keeping their homes safe from respiratory infections.

Additionally, the roof company Bellevue advises homeowners to fix missing and damaged shingles as early as possible. Neglecting minor issues can compromise the roof's integrity and aesthetic appeal, leading to costly repairs in the long run and forcing homeowners to ultimately necessitate a roof replacement.

Preventing ice dams is another key strategy recommended by Orca Roofing & Exteriors. By addressing ice buildup and ensuring proper water flow, homeowners can mitigate the risk of roof damage caused by freezing and thawing cycles.

Ensuring proper ventilation is also an ideal way of extending a roofs lifespan. Orca Roofing & Exteriors states that inadequate ventilation may lead to decay and ice dams. Additionally, homeowners are encouraged to inspect their attic for leaks and ensure adequate insulation to prevent temperature-related issues.

However, for homeowners with roofs that have seen better days, Orca Roofing & Exteriors offers replacement services. Whether it's asphalt shingles, metal roofs, ceramic, or wood shakes, the company uses top-quality materials and adherence to all safety regulations during installations. Furthermore, the installation process is carried out by skilled professionals boasting years of experience in the roofing industry.

    About Orca Roofing & Exteriors:

Orca Roofing & Exteriors provides a comprehensive suite of roofing solutions, including replacements. Beyond their core services, Orca Roofing & Exteriors is dedicated to educating individuals on essential topics related to roof maintenance and longevity. 5 Milwaukee Tools That Will Come In Handy For Roofing Jobs – SlashGear

    - March 31, 2024 by Mr HomeBuilder

Whether you're removing decking from the house's frame or installing metal flashing, roofing is a vigorous job. That's why it's important to take care of your number one tool your hands. Milwaukee makes many different types of gloves, and some may prefer different styles to others, but its Demolition Gloves is a good choice if you're looking to keep your hands protected while still being able to utilize them. According to the company, they work great for all-day comfort and come with a breathable and moisture-wicking lining. One of the coolest aspects about these gloves is that there is a smart swipe knuckle, which means you can use your knuckle instead of a dirty finger on touch screen devices, which will save your screen from scratches.

In terms of reviews, these gloves received a 4.4 out of five star rating from over 1,600 buyers. When the reviews were narrowed down to being used during roofing projects, a few stated that the gloves held up great though a couple did state that their hands did get a bit warm after some use. However, there were a couple of complaints about the gloves coming apart after a few days of roofing. If you're on the fence, we'd suggest trying on the gloves beforehand and seeing for yourself how well you think they'd hold up.

They took advantage of me: Ontario man warns of alleged fake roofing crew – Global News

    - March 31, 2024 by Mr HomeBuilder

A senior citizen in midtown Toronto says he wants to warn the public about an alleged door-to-door roofing scam.

Stuart reached out to Global News with his story last week. For the safety of him and his friends, Global News is not publishing last names or the street where they live.

Two weeks ago, the senior was having a quiet day at home when there was a knock on the door.

There was these two guys, Michael and Tom, that were at the door, he said.

They said they were working across the street and had seen some issues on my roof, and Can we go up and look?'

Stuart, who has hearing, memory and mobility issues, says that he let the men into his house and that they immediately went onto his roof.

    Story continues below advertisement

I heard a bunch of banging upstairs. It was heavy, heavy duty banging.

Stuart said the roofers originally gave him a quote of about $4,700 to fix his roof, but upon returning the next day, told him there was much more damage than originally thought. He said they even used what he and his neighbours believe in hindsight was a stuffed raccoon to convince him that they had found it dead under his roof.

They took me to the basement basically and were saying, Well, theres all this damage, weve got to redo it. So the contract that Id signed was at that point null and void and so its going to be about a $150,000 repair, which is a nonsense price.

They eventually lowered their price to $80,000 then $75,000 according to Stuart, which he accepted. He was unable to take that amount of money out of the bank, though.

    Story continues below advertisement

Stuart says once it became evident there was no easy money to be taken from him, the roofers stopped coming around.

He says he soon learned they had left his roof with a massive gaping hole, exposing the space below it down to the beams. Stuart says they had even left behind the sledgehammer they used to make the hole, and the ladder they used to get to his roof.

Making matters worse, heavy rainfall moved through the area later in the day.

    Story continues below advertisement

Stuarts good friend Carol and neighbour Kathy provided Global News an audio recording of their last phone call with the roofers, in which they claimed they would be over to place a tarp over the hole, but Stuarts friends say they never showed.

Kathy was able to hire another team of roofers to install a cover at the last minute during the storm.

They worked in the dark, in the driving rain, to set up a good tarp so that the hole was efficiently protected, she told Global News.

However, a lot of damage was already done.

Carol showed Global News several areas where water had seeped through and into Stuarts home, pouring out of a light fixture above of his bed.

It was just a steady stream, she recalled.

Water also leaked through a seam in the drywall ceiling above his living room. Most of his home is now covered in clear plastic drop sheets just in case any residual water leaks.

While the roofers didnt get any money from him, hell still incur heavy costs to pay for the damage left behind.

    Story continues below advertisement

Stuart says he believes he fell for a scam and tells Global News he feels like a moron.

The flyer and bill the roofers left at Stuarts house have logos and contact information for a company called Greater Toronto Roofing & Construction. Its one of multiple roofing companies in the city with the term Greater Toronto in its name. Carol believes it was used intentionally as a way to blend in with legitimate businesses that have similar names.

Greater Toronto Roofing & Constructions website touts itself as having 45 Years Experience. Budget Friendly Solutions, encouraging potential customers to contact the company for a free estimate.

Global News called three different phone numbers associated with the company on Friday afternoon. Two of them led to voicemail boxes. Messages were left but no one called back. The third number does not connect at all.

The address given in the companys materials leads to a property up for sale in an industrial area near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue West. Now vacant, it was formerly a dry cleaner. There is no sign of any roofing operation there or at any of the properties nearby.

Stuart, Carol and Kathy filed a report with Toronto police. A police spokesperson told Global News the investigation is currently open and being actively investigated.

    Story continues below advertisement

His ego bruised, Stuart takes no pleasure in telling his story publicly, but hopes it can serve as a warning to others.

It was well thought out. They took advantage of me.

"Outstanding" landscape architect Lynn Kinnear dies aged 64 – Dezeen

    - March 31, 2024 by Mr HomeBuilder

Landscape architect Lynn Kinnear, founder of Kinnear Landscape Architects who collaborated on projects including the Stirling Prize-winning Burntwood School, has died aged 64.

Described by Observer architecture critic Rowan Moore as "one of the outstanding landscape architects of her generation", Kinnear passed away earlier this month after a battle with cancer.

Born in Edinburgh in 1960, Kinnear studied at Heriot-Watt University before going on to work at architecture studios including SOM and Gillespies andestablishing her own studio in 1991.

She was diagnosed with cancer in 2017, but continued to run her practice until 2023.

In a thirty-year career, Kinnear designed numerous playgrounds including Drapers Fields and Normand Park as well as parks, public squares and playspaces for schools including Chobham Academy in Newham and Daubeney School in Hackney.

She collaborated with leading architecture studios on high-profile projects including Caruso St John at the Walsall Art Gallery, RSHP at Mossbourne Academy and AHMM at Burntwood School.

Burntwood School received the Stirling Prize in 2015 one of many awards won by Kinnear, who also received the Landscape Institute President's Award for her Brentford High Street project and the Landscape Institute Award for Walthamstow Wetlands.

Reflecting on her work at Burntwood School, AHMM co-founder Paul Monaghan told Dezeen that the landscape design was "a key part of the project's success".

"She quickly developed our idea of a school where the outdoor spaces were seen as teaching rooms and her concepts included a sculpture court, a village green and a contemplation garden, which all offered special places for the girls at the school," he said.

"She was very collaborative, but also stuck to her ideas, which were always strong."

"Our final project with her was at Tower Hamlets Town Hall now housed at the old Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel," Monaghan added. "It was only finished last year but it provides a new front door to the borough."

"Lynn was unable to deliver this on site but her strong design remains a shining example of someone who kept things simple but bold and made it look easy."

Along with her work through her studio Kinnear Landscape Architects, she also commissioned the Blue House in London by architecture studio FAT, where her then partner Sean Griffiths was co-founder.

The project is one of FAT's most significant works and remained Kinnear's home until she died.

"Lynn was an amazing person who touched many lives and places in all of her capacities as a mother, a friend and a brilliant landscape architect one of the most important of her generation," said Griffiths.

"She leaves behind a tremendous legacy of wonderful places including natural environments, school playgrounds, parks, public squares and streets that will be enjoyed by generations to come."
