The museum of everything: do you have time to look at 150,000 exhibits? – The Guardian

    - September 23, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

From a block away, it looks like a craft from a more advanced civilisation has landed in the centre of Rotterdam. The structure is futuristic, with walls of mirrored glass curving up some 40 metres, reflecting the iron-grey clouds and the fractured city skyline. It wouldnt be surprising if it had a tractor beam instead of a door. As I draw close, a middle-aged Dutch couple are debating whether they like it. They decide not, but snap selfies in front of it anyway.

Rotterdammers are used to high-concept architecture, but what makes this building unusual is its function: its a warehouse. Designed by the Dutch firm MVRDV and known as the Depot, it has been created for one of the most well-regarded art museums in the Netherlands, the Boijmans Van Beuningen. When I visit in mid-September, contractors are installing vitrines and polishing concrete floors; in December, art handlers will begin moving in the museums collection of Rembrandts, Boschs, Magrittes and Dals some 150,000 objects. It will open fully late next year.

In the atrium, Sjarel Ex, the Boijmans director, is wearing the look of a man who cant quite believe its finally happening. A treasure chest, no? he exclaims, gesturing towards a dizzying lattice of glass stairwells above our heads. Every single thing we have will be on display.

To call the Depot a warehouse is, it turns out, to do it a considerable disservice: the building is an attempt to turn the Boijmans inside out. Instead of locking their crown jewels away behind closed doors, the institution has ploughed 55m (50m) into an open storage facility in the heart of the city, right next to the main 1930s building.

Museums have dabbled with open or visible storage for decades. New Yorks Metropolitan made some of its research collections available in the late 1980s, while the V&As 200910 ceramics galleries put some 26,000 objects on display in tall, tightly crammed glass cabinets. But Ex and his colleagues reckon this is the first time that anyone has built an open-storage facility to house an entire museum collection early Netherlandish paintings to Renaissance silverware and De Stijl design. Radical transparency, Ex grins. A little bit Dutch, Im afraid.

As we stride from the loading bay to the decontamination zone (if a piece of furniture has moths, this is where we sort it out, he explains), Ex rattles through the story. In 2013, the basement stores of the Boijmans flooded. Though the damage was mercifully minimal, it was obvious that the museum needed to upgrade, particularly given that 90% of Rotterdam is below sea level and with climate change, the percentage is increasing.

But instead of erecting something in an anonymous industrial zone somewhere, Ex had the idea of turning the stores into a visitor attraction. There were already plans to close the main building for seven years for renovation its due to reopen in 2026 so this would also be a way of bridging the gap.

Whats the English expression out of sight, out of mind? says Ex. So much of what museums do happens in the dark. We wanted to bring some of it into the light.

An appealing idea, but fiendishly difficult to pull off, architect Winy Maas tells me light itself being a major problem. The museum was insistent that, even though the Depot is a public building, conditions should be as good, if not better, than a regular vault: super-high-grade air conditioning will make the environment dust-free, while the structure is divided into five climate zones for different kinds of artefacts (colour photographs need to be stored at a lower temperature than black-and-white prints, for example). While some pieces will hang on movable racks, or in 13 display cabinets placed through the building, light-sensitive objects will be kept in sealed cabinets and only inspected by appointment.

Ex doesnt go into detail about security, but suggests that the building is more than a match for art thieves. And which is safer, really? he asks. Putting your depot on the outskirts of a city, or having it right here in the centre, surrounded by people?

Theres more at stake than technical questions about how best to care for fragile artefacts. Although few museums advertise the fact, what we see in their galleries is a tiny fraction of what they possess: the usual estimate is that 95% of most collections are locked away. Research done in 2016 by the magazine Quartz suggested that, in a sample of 20 museums, almost half the Picasso paintings were in storage, while far more Georgia OKeeffes were in the vault (67) than on permanent display (36).

The problem, of course, is space. Some museums have expanded to make more of their collections visible: Tate Moderns 2016 extension doubled its gallery capacity, while the redeveloped MoMA in New York now contains a leg-punishing 15,000 square metres of gallery space over six floors more than a city block. The V&A has open-storage ambitions for its new offshoot in east London, scheduled to open in 2023: the plan is to have 250,000 objects accessible, added to the 60,000-odd currently on display, which visitors will be able to access through guided tours.

But collections, like the universe, are ever-expanding partly because many public museums are forbidden from de-accessioning, or getting rid of artefacts. Show me a museum that doesnt have a storage problem, one director tells me. Id love to visit.

Its a real challenge, agrees Pil Rasmussen, who runs the conservation department at Denmarks National Gallery. These collections are owned by the public, but the public cannot see most of them.

Open storage is one solution, but has its own challenges. For a start, most museums dont have the resources to build new facilities, particularly in the UK, where institutions have battled with shrinking budgets for at least a decade, putting many on life support, even before the coronavirus crisis hit.

Conservators are working away in public view somewhere between restoration, performance art and a high-culture Big Brother house

In redevelopment plans, storage and backroom facilities are often the ones that get cut back, Rasmussen sighs. Its as much as some places can do to make sure that existing objects are kept safely, never mind the extra resources it takes to show them safely to the public.

Some professionals also have a suspicion that, eye-catching as visible-storage projects are, they are more of a symbolic than a real change to the way museums operate. Does anyone have the appetite to see the 2.3m-odd objects and books owned by the V&A? How about the Smithsonian, whose 19 institutions possess around 155m artefacts, most of which are stored offsite around Washington DC? Where would you even start? Isnt that what curators are for?

When I raise these points with Ex, he nods. Sure. Projects like ours are an experiment. Will anyone come? Or will they come to the Depot, and not to the beautifully curated exhibitions we have in the museum? He shrugs. Well see.

A train ride away from Rotterdam, another major institution is attempting its own version of radical transparency. For the last 14 months, Amsterdams Rijksmuseum has been conducting what it calls Operation Night Watch a project to restore Rembrandts most famous painting while the rest of us look on. The painting hangs in its usual second-floor spot, but its been slipped out of its frame and encased in a giant glass box. Conservators are working away inside somewhere between painting restoration, performance art and a supremely high-culture Big Brother house.

When I visit, the first stage of the exercise, producing an ultra-high-resolution image of the painting surface to analyse damage and chemical composition, is nearing completion: a robotic daylight camera whirrs across a gantry, pausing every so often to take a shot (a lower-resolution photograph, still 44.8 gigapixels big, is already online). Once conservators have studied the picture in microscopic detail, they will begin cleaning and repair all in view of visitors. For the full Big Brother effect, you can watch everything live via webcam.

Rijksmuseum director Taco Dibbits concedes that locking The Night Watch in the conservation studio for years on end wasnt realistic it is the reason many thousands of people visit the museum. Restoring it on display has benefits, too. For museums, the way forward is how you share research, he suggests. We sometimes underestimate how fascinated the public is.

Though audiences wont see the painting as Rembrandt intended for several years, they will gain something else: an insight into the difficulties of conserving a much-damaged, much-restored Old Master. The history of an artwork like this is really complex. The questions are almost philosophical, says Dibbits. Dialogue helps.

For both Dibbits and Ex, opening up marks a powerful shift in how museums see their role, particularly as they emerge from lockdown and re-evaluate their place in the world. Pushing backstage processes and personnel into the limelight is part of it (perhaps the easy part); institutions also need to be open about uncomfortable issues such as funding and ethics, staff diversity, curation and collecting policies, the provenance of disputed or colonial-era objects.

Its a crunch point, Ex suggests: We have to think much, much harder about transparency if we want to survive.

Dibbits concurs. The objects stay the same, he says. But how we talk about and show them that really has to keep changing.

The Boijmans Depot opens for public previews on 25 September; Operation Night Watch is ongoing

Boring, mundane businesses have an exhilarating, viral life on TikTok – The Verge

    - September 23, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a minutes time, you can see a beekeeper remove tens of thousands of bees from a compost bin with her bare hands. Watch a man cut open a tree with a chainsaw, water spewing out of it like a gaping wound. Or see a bare patch of desert transformed into a luxury oasis dotted with waterfalls and palm trees in the snap of a finger.

These normally humdrum tasks have become fodder for viral videos on TikTok, where clips of seemingly dull jobs like landscaping, car detailing, and power washing regularly rack up millions of views. The app has turned sometimes-hidden jobs or dirty behind-the-scenes necessities into soothing, thrilling, or otherwise intriguing videos.

Its also presented an opportunity for enthusiastic business owners, letting them use the platforms viral mechanics as a means for advertising, and for reaching an international audience far beyond the region theyd normally serve.

People on the other side of the world are seeing my videos, said Kelita Butler, whos had videos go viral that show her filling tubes of lip gloss for her Fairborn, Ohio-based company TopSecret Bundles. I got an order in Finland, an order in Ireland. People that I probably will never even meet face to face are seeing my products and what Im doing.

TikTok has been such a successful platform for Danny Wang, the founder of a luxury pool landscaping company in Orange County, California, that its become pretty much his entire job. Wang regularly posts videos of the homes and yards his company transforms from bland, blank spaces into what look like million-dollar resorts. Hed gotten some traction posting before-and-after photos on Instagram. But it wasnt until he applied the format to video and put it on TikTok that his work started going viral.

A typical clip will show a blank backyard covered in dirt, a caption promising something good is about to come Client: can you make my pockets hurt? followed by a glamorous reveal after the beat drops. Wang always includes a genie emoji, like hes simply poofing these dreamy projects into existence.

Our projects are very out there so that alone draws a lot of attention, Wang said. Its different. Its just interesting. It replaces the television.

TikToks much-discussed algorithm is the big reason these videos have succeeded. Whereas on Instagram or YouTube, you might have to seek these videos out I certainly have never searched for cool logging videos TikTok is built around serving up anything its algorithm deems addictive to viewers at large. Butler and Wang both use YouTube and Facebook too, but neither has seen the kind of wild, out-of-nowhere success that TikTok gifted them. The platforms short time limit also demands that videos are simple and focused, encouraging creators to make clips that are catchy up front, easy to follow along with, and that cut out before you lose interest.

The best small business videos capture your attention with something new and unexpected, like a sawed-off wedge of wood falling out of a huge tree or bright pink lip gloss flowing from a stark white machine. They take you behind the scenes of a small world youd otherwise know nothing about and may not have even known you could seek out.

I didnt realize that people might not know what I do exists, said Erika Thompson, who operates the Austin-based Texas Beeworks. A recent video shows Thompson in jeans and a tank top the veil, suit, and gloves cause you to lose a lot of dexterity taking a tree branch covered in a thick swarm of bees and banging it against a box, toppling the bees into the hive-like storage structure below. Bees have pretty tough exoskeletons, so the short drop doesnt harm them at all, Thompson says in the video.

At the same time, business owners have found clear patterns to what their audiences like, and they may have to stick to them to keep blowing up. Butler said shell film herself filling up lip gloss bottles she doesnt even need yet, just because thats what her fans like to see. Thompson said viewers respond strongest to her bee removal videos, which show her scooping thousands of bees out of strange spaces like a water meter box or a patio chair, then relocating them into transportable frames.

For the TikTok account of R&A Tree Service in Enumclaw, Washington, the winning formula has been big trees. The companys videos show owner Ryland Popke and colleagues slicing into and toppling over trees theyre paid to remove.

It sounds stupid, but Ive posted a lot of videos on TikTok where it was a small tree, but I thought it was a badass video and all the timing was right, and it turns out it doesnt do nearly as good as some of the other ones, Popke said.

The exposure has been helpful for their businesses. Wang said hes able to provide design services internationally, expanding his reach far beyond the 30-mile radius his company initially operated in. Popke has seen demand from all over the country for hats he sells. Butlers business operates online, so shes seen a surge in sales.

Thompson says the viral videos have helped her business too, but shes more excited about the education shes been able to offer people. She received an email from a woman saying her niece now wanted to be a beekeeper; another person said their child had been reenacting her video in their playroom, wearing a toy astronauts helmet as a makeshift beekeeping veil.

Shes also gotten some criticism from people who fear the videos will encourage amateurs to start scooping up bees on their own. Thompson doesnt buy it. I cant stop watching guys in wind suits, she said. But Im not gonna buy a wind suit and jump off a cliff.

Who Pays for ‘Kitchen Crashers’? It Isn’t Easy to Get Cast on the Show – Distractify

    - September 23, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

As fans of Kitchen Crashers know, the DIY Network program loves to surprise unsuspecting shoppers at home improvement stores with professional remodels, but who is expected to pay for these pricy renovations?

Lucky for us, past participants have opened up about their experiences on the various Crashers shows (which include Kitchen, Yard, Bath, House, and Room), though getting cast is tougher than you think.

All five versions of Crashers use the same production company, Big Table Media, who foots the bill for the projects. However, local businesses typically donate their goods and services in exchange for free advertising.

On top of that, home makeover shows tend to have big-budget sponsors, like Bed Bath & Beyond and Target, to help cover certain costs. In a 2019 blog post, one of the franchises former clients, Bill Cunningham, confirmed that he didnt contribute a single penny to his renovation.

"My wife and I were on Bath Crashers and while we received a $40,000 high-end bath remodel, as the homeowners we never saw an invoice for one single item or trade that worked on our project," he stated.

"Everyone related to the show was really amazing," he added. "Like a group of fun and talented friends who take over your house for a few days. Its a crazy few days which will leave you sleep deprived and exhausted, but my wife and I would do it again in a heartbeat."

Mike and Wendy Schmiedeler, a couple from Oak Park, Ill., were thrilled with how interior designer Alison Victoria and her Kitchen Crashers crew transformed their outdated space. "The new kitchen is great," the duo told the Wednesday Journal after their episode aired.

"It looks fun and modern now, and the layout makes a ton of sense, and, of course, the new appliances are fantastic," Wendy shared. "People were skeptical that we would turn over the design decisions to someone else There was nothing anyone could do to this kitchen to make it worse than it already was."

Unfortunately, most of the people you see on the Crashers shows were actually found in home improvement stores, meaning your odds of manufacturing an appearance are slim.

The Schmiedelers, for example, were selected to appear on Kitchen Crashers while shopping at Lowes. "We are looking for homeowners who really need and want a new kitchen, who will really appreciate it," Victoria, who also hosts HGTVs Windy City Rehab, said in 2012.

Yard Crashers star Chris Lambton previously told Popsugar that viewers would be shocked by the number of individuals who turn down his offer for a free lawn makeover.

"It's funny how many people when I walk up to them just say 'no' to me or walk away without talking much," he revealed. "That was one of the biggest surprises I found from doing Yard Crashers, how many people don't even want to talk to me."

Though the DIY franchise does its best to be authentic, no reality show is 100 percent real. As one redditor noted in 2017, "My friends sister knew the [Yard Crashers] producer so they set it up where my friend would be at Lowes and then the host would surprise [him] and his wife. Far from random."

We just care about the transformations.

11th annual Venice Bible Read-a-Thon scheduled for October – Sarasota Herald-Tribune

    - September 22, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Earle Kimel|Sarasota Herald-Tribune

VENICE After a six-month delay, the 11th annual Venice Bible Read-a-Thon is scheduled to return to the gazebo at Centennial Park, Oct. 3-7, despite the fact that the city of Venice is not currently issuing permits for public events because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The marathon, 90-hour reading of the King James Bible was one of several spring special events canceled because of COVID-19 concerns, but organizers feel that the reading can proceed safely within social distancing guidelines.

We do not want to wait until 2021, that would have skipped a year, said Sandy Black, one of the read-a-thon organizers.

Some of the concessions include the elimination of opening ceremonies that feature speakers and local church praise teams.

About 50 churches and organizations come together to make the marathon reading possible.

The group considered the possibility of hosting the Bible reading on private property, or even virtually, but decided that the virtual reading would not meet one of their missions.

If we do it virtually its not going to be in a public place, Black said. We feel its important to read his word publicly.

The Read-a-Thon was started by Susan Nartowicz, along with Karla Roy and Kathy Bolam, both of whom have since passed away.

The three started the marathon Bible reading after learning of one in Stuart. For the first three years, it was hosted at Patriots Park. Since then it has called the gazebo at Centennial Park home.

The city of Venice is still not granting special event permits and several traditional events have been sidelined for 2020, including the Womens Sertoma Sun Fiesta and the Venice Holiday Parade.

But city officials said that that does not forbid the read-a-thon from occurring, as long as social-distancing protocols are followed, and there is no amplification.

Black has been working with Assistant City Manager Len Bramble on available options and the Oct. 3-7 dates were actually selected because those dates were free at the gazebo in Centennial Park though the gazebo has been technically closed since May for repairs.

Black said the group will bring its own tents and set up accordingly, if need be,

We plan to bring our own tents and we know what parameters we have to fit into, Black said.

City spokeswoman Lorraine Anderson noted that people can usethe public park without a permit, providing theyre appropriately socially distanced.

In June a public candlelight vigil in remembrance of George Floyd and dealing with social justice concerns occurred at West Blalock Park, though no permit was issued.

The read-a-thon is actively recruiting volunteers to read passages. The best way to sign up is actually online at venice.biblereadathon.org, where its possible to pick a specific available reading slot.

They can log on and select a time, its a real easy reservation system, Black said. It helps us to keep people socially distanced.

Most read for about 15 minutes, though many in the late night/early morning slots double up.

One can also call Black at 941-702-2000 as well.

For nine years, then-mayor John Holic read a proclamation honoring the Bible reading, and frequently opened the event by reading Genesis.

Holic, who found out about the read-a-thon Monday, said a birthday celebration for his grandchildren means he will not be able to attend the opening days, but he plans to continue his personal tradition of reading a passage.

I cant be there for the start like usual but I definitely will sign up, Holic said.

For nearly three decades the free summer concert series run by the Clinton Chamber of Commerce has been a staple of Clintons summers. Though the series was postponed this summer, the series will now have a fall run on Sundays in the fall from 2 to 3:30 p.m. through Oct. 11.

The concerts, now officially the Michael B. Ierardi Jr. Memorial Concert Series, have been held for about 30 years at the Vece Gazebo at the Pierson School, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the concert series planned start in July was postponed.

The fall concerts started on Sept. 13. Upcoming concerts include The Convertibles on Sept. 27, The Engine Room on Oct. 4, and the Vonzells on Oct. 11, at the Vece Gazebo & Lawn, Pierson School, 75 East Main Street, Clinton. The concerts feature music ranging from rock and roll to oldies to doo wop music. Each concert has two or three sponsors that cover the costs of the concerts and police presence at the concerts

Traditionally, attendees of the concerts would see a large group of people from young children to grandparents all over the lawn dancing and having a care-free good time on a warm summer evening. The concerts this year look a little different, with people staying farther apart.

Chamber Executive Director Paul Orsini said that the Sept. 13 concert still drew a good sized crowdabout 125 to 150 peopleand went well.

The guidelines are kind of ingrained in people by now so people came prepared, Orsini said.

The new COVID protocols require that people maintain six feet of distance between separate groups and that masks be worn at all times, except for when sitting with your own group. Socializing between separate groups is discouraged. No attendees are allowed within 12 feet of the stage, otherwise the singers would need to wear masks on stage.

Orsini said that there was an issue where one attendee at the Sept. 13 concert refused to wear a mask and was asked to leave.

Orsini said the intention was never to cancel the concerts, but to postpone them until there was more clarity as to whether the concerts could offered safely. Orsini said the concerts have gone well and that some people suggest that the chamber move the concerts to the fall going forward.

Orsini said the decision to postpone was made in June when new guidelines on large gatherings were issued by the state. Orsini said that at the time, the chamber was unsure on how to interpret and enforce some of the guidelines and with the start date of the concerts fast approaching the chamber decided the prudent move was to push the series to the fall so that more protocols could be developed.

The feeling was it was going to be too hard to manage. We decided more time is better, Orsini said. Its a lot easier to manage now.

Parker Colorado Named Second Best US City to Live in 2020 – Westword

    - September 22, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Money magazine just released its list of the best places to live in America in2020, and the Douglas County community of Parker finished second, behind only Evans, Georgia.

After receiving anearly heads-up regarding this honor, we headed to Parker on Saturday, September 19, to get a sense of what so impressed Money's minions. What we found was a bucolic community that's very affluent, very white (we saw a single family of color during our visit), and growing like mad. Massive tracts of land are being graded in preparation for new subdivisions that will allow many more people to experience a lifestyle that shows few negative effects from the COVID-19 pandemic.

That makes sense: According to updated figures about per capita infection rates, only one in 142 residents of Douglas County has contracted the novel coronavirus, placing it 33rd among Colorado's 64 counties. Nonetheless, most people in the public places we visited around Parker had masks on, unless they were dining at one of the many outdoor patios in town; most practiced some degree of social distancing. But there were definitely exceptions to that rule.

Money's introduction to Parker boasts these basic factoids:

Population: 59,000Median household income: $114,000Median home price: $486,000Unemployment rate: 8.7 percent

"A generation ago, Parker was still a ranching outpost of less than 5,000," the Money item points out. "But as Colorados economy and population took off in the late 1990s, Parker began to attract white-collar workers and young families looking for more space than Denver had to offer." Moreover, with home prices "skyrocketing in Denver, surrounding areas like Parker are starting to look more attractive. Homes in Parker are listed for roughly $169 per square foot compared to $338 in Denver. ... And it might be the right time to buy in: In the last two years, prices for homes were up 2.4 percent in Denver vs 7.2 percent in Parker."

The piece adds: "Based on our estimates, only about one in five Parker residents works in industries seriously impacted by COVID-19, like retail and entertainment. And about 76 percent of the people here own their homes."

No wonder Parker scored so high in two of Money's main metrics: Economy and Health and Safety.

On the afternoon of September 19, dozens upon dozens of people were walking around downtown Parker, where oodles of restaurants and shops line Mainstreet. We didn't see a single empty storefront.

O'Brien Park, a lovely facility centered around a gazebo, also boasts walking paths and a large playground, where unmasked kids were frolicking. Nearby, families and other groups were enjoying casual lunches at establishments embracing the Colorado casual culture.

One eatery spotlighted live music behind a fence festooned with a sign on which the phrases "Thank You For My Freedom" and "Thank You For Your Service" were emblazoned over an American flag backdrop a reflection of Parker's conservative nature. So, too, was a truck roaring around the area while flying a Blue Lives Matter flag (along with a Colorado state flag) from its bed.

Another busy spot was Railbender Skate & Tennis Park, which was crowded with skater tots. Facial coverings in the main skating area definitely weren't a thing, and groups freely mingled, suggesting that the idea of infection happening in such an ideal setting was utterly unfathomable. But at big-box stores in sprawling commercial developments, safety protocols were very much in evidence, if only because masks were required for entry. After all, businesses don't want to risk liability, no matter how perfect a place might seem.

And Parker certainly does look perfect. Even without advocacy from Money(which also loves Broomfield, which finished in eighteenth place), the community is booming, whether the country is in crisis or not.
