Hans Op de Beecks Garden of Whispers art installation sheds light on the refugee crisis – Hindustan Times

    - September 11, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A renowned Belgian artist by the name of Hans Op de Beeck created a quintessentially site-specific work of art in the 13-century gothic church of the Convent of the Jacobins, in Toulouse, France. Created for the Printemps de Septembre Festival, this multi-sensory, immersive art installation is called The Garden of Whispers.

The 600 square metres of space has been re-imagined as a type of wasteland, where the terrain has been changed to sand dunes and lifeless trees. The sand used by Op de Beeck matches the same ochre colour of the buildings centuries-old brick walls. A wooden walkway winds through the sand dunes, lit only by a simple string of lights.

As you walk through the desolate landscape, whispers emerge from the sand all around you through 20 carefully concealed speakers, sharing secrets, confessions- of misdeeds and escapades. Women, men and children, all seem to be reaching out of the atmosphere to express themselves. The voices present in a mangled form, overlapping one another.

The area represents a kind of abandonment one feels while walking through an area which was previously occupied but has since been deserted, left to those who themselves are forgotten. While walking through the area, one can spot small makeshift campsites, cobbled together from scraps of canvas and wooden poles, according to the artists website, which serve as a visual reminder of the shelters built by nomads in the desert.

According to the artist, Hans Op de Beeck, this installation serves as an embodiment of man as a being who stages the world around him in a tragi-comic way, as told in an interview with The Mind Circle. The Garden of Whispers employs a range of biblical and mystical references that touch on the issue of refugees. The visuals and the whispers of the installation create an atmosphere that is almost confessional in nature, but further than that, the artist leaves the installing to the interpretation of the viewers introspection.

More so, with the current world environment, the sense of desolation created by Hans Op de Beeck, is even more relevant as the conversation regarding this post-apocalyptic pandemic has become the new norm.

New Research in JNCCN Sheds Light on Multi-Organ Adverse Events from Immunotherapy – PRNewswire

    - September 11, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., Sept. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --New international research in the September 2020 issue of JNCCNJournal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Networkadds important knowledge about how immunotherapy-related adverse events (irAEs) can impact more than one organ in a single patient. This study provides new information on how frequently multiple organ side effects occur, and reveals that multi-organ irAEs are more likely to happen sequentially rather than simultaneously.

"Multi-organ irAEs are under-recognized, under reported, and their pathophysiology is poorly understood," said lead researcher Ganessan Kichenadasse, MBBS, FRACP, Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, Flinders University, in Bedford Park, Australia. "We need a concerted international effort to improve our understanding and help identify predisposing factors and prevention strategies. Treating teams should be aware of the potential for irAEs which affect multiple organs and institute plans for recognizing and managing them."

The researchers evaluated the incidence and patterns of multi-organ irAEs using individual patient data from four non-small cell lung cancer trials where patients were treated with atezolizumab, a PD-L1 inhibitor. Those four studies, known as OAK, POPLAR, BIRCH, and FIR, include investigators from around the world. Out of 1,548 patients worldwide, 27% experienced at least one adverse event; 5.4% experienced multi-organ irAEs. Skin, laboratory, endocrine, neurologic and pulmonary abnormalities represented the most common organ systems involved.

Among the 84 cases with multi-organ irAEs, 70 patients (83.3%) had two organ systems affected, 13 (15.5%) had three, and one patient had four systems affected. 86% of multi-organ irAE patients experienced these side-effects sequentially rather than concurrently. According to the results, multi-organ irAEs were generally amenable to satisfactory management, and their occurrence was associated with better overall survival rates.

"Based on the mechanisms of action for these immune checkpoint agents, tumor response and irAEs are likely to have a common pathophysiology," said Dr. Kichenadasse. "There is also probably a cumulative immune activation with every dose of immunotherapy, meaning lengthier treatment could lead to both better survival and added organ damage. However, it is important to highlight that this analysis was exploratory and hypothesis generating; these results need to be confirmed through additional research."

"This study confirms that more than one organ, at the same time or sequentially, can be affected by immune-related adverse events from checkpoint inhibitor therapy," commented Igor Puzanov, MD, MSci, FACP,Professor of Medicine, Director of the Early Phase Clinical Trials Program and Chief of Melanoma at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, who was not involved in this study. "This is worth noting for all practicing oncologists and other specialists taking care of patients who are receiving these therapies. The silver lining here is the seemingly improved overall survival we see among these patients."

To read the entire study and a related commentary, visit JNCCN.org. Complimentary access to "Multiorgan Immune-Related Adverse Events During Treatment With Atezolizumab" and "Immune Related Adverse Events: Implications for Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy" is available until December 10, 2020.

The Shed to Reopen on October 16 with Solo Exhibition by Howardena Pindell – ArtfixDaily

    - September 11, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

New York's The Shed debuted in April 2019 in a grand $475 million building in Hudson Yards. After being closed for over six months, this new arts center plans to reopen with a powerful presentation of works by Howardena Pindell.

The Shed has announced that it will reopen on Friday, October 16, with the new solo exhibition Howardena Pindell: Rope/Fire/Water, examining the violent, historical trauma of racism in America and the therapeutic power of artistic creation. After closing on March 13 in response to New York Citys efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, The Shed will welcome back visitors, Thursdays through Sundays, with enhanced health and safety protocols, as well as free admission to the exhibition through October 31.

    Howardena Pindellphoto: Nathan Keay

We are very honored to produce and present Howardena Pindells powerful and timely work as our reopening exhibition this fall, and to have commissioned her unrealized project of 50 years, Rope/Fire/Water. When we started planning an exhibition with Pindell in 2017, we could not have foreseen its resonance with this summers profound call to dismantle systemic racism and to establish equality for Black lives, said Alex Poots, The Sheds Artistic Director and CEO. Were so pleased to welcome our audiences and neighbors back to The Shed after closing our doors in March, less than a year after opening, and weve implemented thorough protocols to ensure a safe environment for all. As our city restarts, we continue in our commitment to supporting artists and providing a space where they can address the urgent issues of our time.

Howardena Pindell: Rope/Fire/Water presents Pindells first video work in 25 years, as well as new large-scale paintings, and several abstract paintings from earlier in her career.

Over her nearly 60-year career, Pindell has created richly textured abstract paintings while engaging with politics and the social issues of her time. The powerful new video Rope/Fire/Water, commissioned by The Shed, is a work that Pindell has wanted to create since the 1970s, inspired by a traumatic experience in her youth when she saw a shocking image of racial violence.

Pindell also will also debut a pair of large-scale paintings related to global atrocities of imperialism and white supremacy, and several abstract paintings that demonstrate a through line in Pindells practice: after working on traumatic historical projects, the artist decompresses by creating meticulously produced, large-scale abstract works on unstretched canvas.

An online gallery of paintings in the exhibition with explanatory texts and a digital reading room of supplementary resources will be available online at theshed.org. Additional programs exploring themes of the exhibition will be announced.

Productivity profiling sheds light on how people get the job done – The Irish Times

    - September 11, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Companies have been using personality profiling to get insights into their employees for decades, but now UK-based productivity specialists Smarter Not Harder has developed an online tool that profiles productivity traits. It is called PQ (productivity quotient) and if you have ever wondered what drives your productivity or that of the people on your team theres now a 15-minute test that can tell you.

Ive probably done 10,000 or more productivity-related interviews in my career, and Ive reached a point where, within a few minutes of starting to talk to someone, I know exactly what their productivity traits are going to be, says company co-founder Neil Massa.

Just over two years ago I mentioned this to Cliff Edwards, who is both a business psychologist and a mathematician, and he reckoned he could model it and create an algorithm around it. He spoke to other members of our team who have also done thousands of similar interviews, and the result is PQ, a mathematical model that enables us to predict what peoples preferences will be when it comes to managing their time and productivity.

Massa says peoples productivity behaviour is driven by numerous factors, including the beliefs and attitudes they have formed over time, the characteristics they were born with and their expectations of work and life.

What the profiling does is to help them understand what their preferences mean in practice, while also shedding light on why different styles may be the reason a team is faltering or its members are not getting on.

Preferences are grouped under four productivity pillars: logical; instinctive; self; and team.

Massa says that people with a high logical preference typically love spreadsheets, lists, gadgets and technology that automates things. They get their productivity from being incredibly logical and organised which I stress is not for everyone, he says.

Those with an instinctive preference go a little more on emotion. They trust their intuition, and quite often make complex decisions involving a lot of information in a very short space of time and sometimes this freaks out their colleagues. Theyre incredibly valuable people, partly because of their creativity but also because of the speed with which they can arrive at their decisions and take action.

The logical and the instinctive could be seen as polar opposites, but its not inconceivable that someone could have a balance of both.

The productivity of those operating from the self pillar is driven by what is important to them, and this has its good and bad points. On the negative side, they can come across as selfish, but Massa says this is often because they are gimlet-like in focus. They dont do anything they dont need to do, and usually have very clear priorities, goals and objectives.

Productivity linked to the team pillar is someone who can see the value in the people they work with, and uses it to help them achieve what they need to achieve, Massa says. So this type of person will call on and draw in the experiences and talents of other people to get work done.

Theyre also very good at enabling other people. For example, they will consider whether something they might do will get in the way of someone else doing their job. They are collaborative and embrace team working holistically.

PQ profiling takes 15 minutes online. When it was being designed Massa stipulated that it should be quick and not something you need a flask of coffee, two Kit Kats and 45 minutes or more to do, he says.

When someone takes a profile it gives them their relative scores and preferences across the four pillars ,and tells them a little bit about how this might manifest itself in the way they approach things.

Individuals can take the test for 95 (106) and there are different packages for corporate clients that include additional elements such as coaching.

Apart from throwing light on peoples individual productivity drivers the profiling can also be useful in starting wider conversations around how teams tick.

The power of the tool lies in the insights and what you do with them, Massa says. Were just beginning a project with a technology company that had to restructure due to the lockdown. They had to put together new teams made up of people starting work for the first time and those who havent worked remotely before. They are using the tool both to understand individuals and maximise team productivity.

While PQ profiling will indicate someones preferred route to productivity Massa says context can affect behaviour.

If someone is in a steady state their default preferences will apply. However, they can shift and if youre in a period of change, such as has happened during the lockdown, an individual may lean on one more than the other. Ive taken the test quite a few times, and its picked up subtleties and nuances around the circumstances Ive been in when Ive taken it. Preferences are not fixed forever.

If youre running a team you ideally need people with all four pillar traits, Massa adds. Its also really important that people understand the preferences of those around them.

Most people dont set out to make life difficult for others. They do it accidentally, and if they knew why there would be a lot more harmony and higher levels of productivity.

Police Shed Light On Effectiveness Of Aerial Surveillance – WBAL Radio

    - September 11, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Friday, September 11, 2020Tyler Waldman, WBAL NewsRadio 1090 and FM 101.5

A day after a federal appeals report heard a challenge to the Baltimore Police Department's aerial surveillance program, police released a mid-term reportFriday that sheds light on the program's effectiveness.

From May 1 to July 1, the plane produced 81 evidentiary packages related to homicides, shootings, armed robberies and carjackings. Of those cases, 21% have been closed with an arrest, compared to 16% of similar incidents that did not have support from the spy plane.

Police said the data in the report assembled by RAND Corporation are provisional and that they have made no conclusions about the program. They said more work needs to be done to determine correlation, causality and effectiveness, including determining how many of the cases solved with the plane's help could have been solved without it.

This report provides an extensive review of the programs progress, while fulfilling our commitment to transparency in sharing data on where the program is at its halfway mark, Commissioner Michael Harrison said in a statement. We will continue to be guided by our research partners on the effectiveness of the program and other metrics of performance.

The flights are conducted by an outside vendor and are privately funded by Texas philanthropists.

Morgan State University and the University of Baltimore are surveying public opinion on the aerial surveillance program. Police have received 63 complaints, most of which have been noise complaints. A third plane being deployed is quieter than the other two, police said.

They are among the first residents of the white-bricked town homes on Park Avenue south of Leavenworth Street priced at $315,000 and above.

The 12-residence project of Milestone Development stands out on thetransforming midtown corridor because it infuses brand new for-sale homes among apartment buildings (many of them recently rehabbed) and aging houses.

So far, a third of the town homes that span about 1,640 square feet are claimed, said leasing agents Debbie and Bob Jensen of NP Dodge Real Estate. Each comes with two bedrooms, their own two-car garage, deck and front patio.

The Beavers have a rooftop terrace and views of the downtown riverfront. On a day last week, dad was helping to move in new patio furniture, as daughters Kyrsten, a college freshman, and Abbigale, a high school sophomore, took their dog for a walk.
