Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the government will provide land and contribute some money for construction of an office for Basavanagudi Cooperative Society Limited, which observed its centenary celebrations on Sunday. He made the promise while inaugurating the celebrations at National College grounds. The society was established in 1908. It sells household articles at Basava Super Bazar. At present, it has over 8,000 members and recorded a turnover of Rs. 15 crore in 2012-13. Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi visited the society in 1936 and Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya presided over the golden jubilee celebrations in 1958. Noted lexicographer G Venkatasubbaiah, who turned 100 last year, participated in Sundays function and said he was the director of the society in 1958.

Bangalore South MP H N Anantha Kumar offered Rs. 25 lakh to the society from his Lok Sabha constituency fund towards construction of its office building while MLA Ravi Subramanaya promised to contribute Rs. 10 lakh.

Society president M Bore Gowda felicitated former Union Minister M V Rajasekharan and Prof Venkatasubbaiah. Minister for Cooperation H S Mahadeva Prasad was present at the event.
