Listen to Report

All the flooding caused by Sandy is still causing concern about mold. The New Jersey Health Department is providing some guidelines to help homeowners and businesses.

Health Commissioner Mary ODowd says there has not been an increase in reported health problems resulting from mold in flood-damaged buildings.

She says a brochure available on the Health Departments website tells residents how to correct mold growth before it becomes troublesome.

You want to make sure that youre removing all of the potential wet material making sure that you cleanse it properly using a detergent and then making sure its making completely dry before you close that wall back up again. Take your time and do it right.

If youre hiring a contractor to do the job, the brochure recommends you get bids from different companies and make sure they have specialized training for mold assessment work.

ODowd says free classes on mold remediation are also available for homeowners, businesses and local building officials.

There are about 35 classes being held around the state of New Jersey and hundreds of people have signed up already but theres room in classes yet to be scheduled.
