A thirty-four-year-old local woman, who posed as an employment agent, was sentenced to jail for twenty four months and ordered to pay BND$22,920 in compensation to a group of people who paid her money to secure the services of maids.

Nazura Garip has to serve an additional eighteen months and two weeks in jail if she fails to pay the compensation, which is equivalent to the amount of deposit money she received from 11 clients between October 2011 and May 2013.

She convinced her clients to hand over the money after they selected maids from a list of biodata, which she had created. The deposits varied from BND$500 to BND$2,500.

Nazura used to pick foreign women, who were in the country on social visit passes, to send to her clients' houses to work as maids.

However, after a few days she would take them away on the pretext that the maids had to undergo a medical examination and apply for an identity card.

She used to replace the maids several times to convince her clients that she is an authorised maid agent. When Nazura could not find a foreign woman to work as a maid, she would stop contacting her clients.

A police report was lodged by one of her clients, who did not get a maid after paying money, which prompted a probe into the case.

Nazura had asked the court for a fine instead of a jail term, however, Magistrate Hajah Ervy Rahman ruled that imprisonment is justified as her crime is serious. BRUDIRECT.COM
