Sydney's beaches and harbourside rock pools inspired the design of the proposed Green Square swimming pool. Vision: City of Sydney.

An emerging Sydney architect has won a large international competition with his design for the city's newest and largest pool in the Green Square development.

Judges selected a design by local Andrew Burges from a global field of nearly 150 designs for the City of Sydney project which has a budget expected to reach $50 million.

The Gunyama Park and Aquatic Centre will cover 16,500 square metres with 2630 square metres of swimming space - 40 per cent more than the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, currently the city's largest pool.

Chairman of the jury, Melbourne architect Carey Lyon, praised the artful combination of a landscaped park with an aquatic centre so close to the city centre.

"It cleverly integrated the idea of a park with a building that was the strong view of the judges," Mr Lyon said.

Mr Burges' entry teamed up leading Australian landscape architects TCL.
