That's Rather Lovely: How One Designer Personalized a Hamptons Spec Home

After New York-based interior designer Gideon Mendelson bought his first piece of real estate, a five-bedroom shingle-style spec home in Sagaponack, N.Y., he set about trying to turn it into everything a spec home isn't: "a sophisticated, cohesive environment with a few very unlikely characters," as he tells Domaine. Naturally, given his profession, many of these characters are from Mendelson's own retinue. The designer built a number of custom furniture pieces for the home, which he downplays as a "an opportunity to show of my collection of things," applying to each piece the signature "nod to traditionalism" he's honed for years as the principal of Mendelson Group. These days, it serves as a vacation home away from Brooklyn from Mendelson, his partner, and their three children.

Photos via Domaine The bright blue living room sports a custom settee upholstered with separate pieces of brown and chartreuse linen, evidencing Mendelson's love for "marrying unexpected things." The branched-framed Herv Van Der Straeten mirror on the mantel is there because he appreciates its expectation-defying "odd kind of Tim Burton effect," and the same can be said for the room's centerpiece, a modifiable multi-tiered cocktail table by Lebanese designer Nada Debs. "It's going to become an icon," Mendelson asserts.

Photo via Domaine Border-frame duvets from Serena & Lily cover the beds in the bamboo-wallpapered guest room. "My friends come and feel really comfortable," says Mendelson. "Every room gets used, and it's a place everybody wants to come."

The dining room is lorded over by an Oval Boi Chandelier from David Weeks Studio, while the table is set with Lorin Marsh Promenade Caned Armchairs, all of it set off nicely by a floor of red oak now stained with a hint of olive green.
