PORTSMOUTH Aimee Maher began working with her mother, Andrea Maher, around age 12. This was in Cincinnati, where Andrea was an interior designer. Summering in Maine led the family to move to Ogunquit in 2007.

Now, the mother and daughter duo have opened Evelyn Hill (named after Andrea's mother) on Deer Street in downtown Portsmouth. As their tagline attests, the store sells beautiful things for the home as well as custom interior design.

"We thought about opening in Ogunquit (Maine). We looked all over the Seacoast," Andrea said. "After a lot of research, we felt that downtown Portsmouth was the best place for us to be. It has a year-round population as well as visitors."
