Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Summer is always an ideal time to take that family vacation, but that empty house opens up an opportunity for burglars.

To counter, Home security companies are coming up with some novel ideas to keep intruders out, like a light machine that mimics a television.

Todd, burglars are often looking for an easy target, and that means an empty house.

Tactics for making it look like someone is home range from simply having someone mow the lawn, to gadgets like a Fake TV.

When it comes to protecting her home, Marjorie Schlossman isn't taking any chances.

Marjorie Schlossman- Fargo Resident: "I have had a security system for a long time. It's set off by motion detectors, by glass breaking, by other things like that."

Besides alarms, her home is equipped with cameras and motion detectors that flip on the porch lights.

An empty house can be an attractive target for burglars.

So, deterring opportunistic intruders is all about making a home look "lived in."

Lt. Joel Vettel- Fargo Police Department: "The majority of burglars we see are looking for those easy targets. They're not looking for the ones that are going to take and complicate their lives."
