D-428 to review Lincoln Elementary cooling project bids – DeKalb Daily Chronicle

DeKALB The DeKalb School District 428 board will consider bids for a $1 million-plus project to replace the boiler system at Lincoln Elementary School and install a chiller.

Advertisements to bid were sent to 10 contractors.

Of those, five provided a range of pricing.

Three contractors then attended the bid opening, which took place last month.

DeKalb Mechanical came in with the lowest responsible bid of $1,134,000, which is $20,800 over budget of the estimated cost.

The project also includes an asbestos removal plan.

Indiana-based Environmental Assurance was the lowest bidder for that part of the project at $33,744, well below the projected cost of $122,000. This estimate was based on a cost estimate of $968,000 from 2014 with a 15 percent cost escalation.

Board members will review the proposals at their meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Education Center, 901 S. Fourth St.

Funding will come from $900,000 from life-safety budget and $464,863 from the operations and maintenance budget, according to district documents.

Lincoln Elementary is the only District 428 school without an air-conditioning system, which led to classes being dismissed during a heat wave in the fall semester.

Approval will also be sought for bids from Dunlap-based Commercial Mechanical Inc. totaling $547,000 to install air-conditioning units at Huntley Middle School and from DeKalb-based One Source Mechanical for $347,400 to replace heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment at Clinton Rosette Middle School.
