Jangmi in the region could see waves reach 4.5 metres in the waters off Sabah, Sarawak.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah, which is surrounded by three seas viz. South China Sea, Sulu Sea and Sulawesi Sea, will be spared tropical storm Jangmi which had been expected to lash the east coast at 55 kph, down from its 74 kph earlier strength.

North Borneos good feng shui has come to its rescue.

The storm, as expected, has changed course from the direction of the Land below the Wind, and will be a spent force some 300 km north east of Sandakan on New Years Day. It weakened considerably to 46 kph after crossing the Sulu Sea.

The Meteorological Department said in a statement that the advent of Jangmi in the region could see waves reach 4.5 metres in the waters off Sandakan, Kudat, West Coast, Labuan, Miri and Bintulu, the last two being in Sarawak.

This is expected to pose a danger to all shipping and coastal activities including fishing and ferry services.

Heavy rains and strong winds are expected to start tonight until tomorrow, the Meteorological Department said in the media update. We have issued heavy rain warning for all districts in Sabah except for Tawau. The same warning applies to all districts in Sarawak except for Kapit.
