SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Carol Wheelock makes a living bringing harmony to people's homes.

"I immediately notice things when I walk into a house," she said. "And I can usually have an idea of what's working and what's not working."

She's a former public school teacher turned certified feng shui practitioner who helps clients understand how their surroundings affect them.

"Feng shui itself means wind and water," she explained.

The practice is based on ancient Chinese beliefs. By balancing chi, or the energy in and around us, it's thought feng shui enhances the environment in which we live. Wheelock says the work is quite personal. She wouldn't let us approach her clients, so we found a pair of guinea pigs who allowed us inside their consultation. You may recognize them: WCAX Reporter Alex Apple and Digital Media Producer Trevor Audet.

Carol Wheelock: You must have more coats than that?

Alex Apple: I keep my coats in my closet. But I have a big closet.

Carol Wheelock: And you?

Trevor Audet: Mine are mostly on the floor in my bedroom.
