Restaurants based around the Metrolink site where the remains of 100 people were found fear their excavation could be bad for business - and even bring negative Feng Shui.

The grim discovery was made by tram engineers during test digs and the area has been temporarily closed off for their study and removal.

But Jenny Lau, owner of the Rice Bowl on Cross Street, said the nearby work is blocking her restaurant from view - and could bring bad Feng Shui.

She said: I dont really feel comfortable about the bodies because in our Chinese culture and Feng Shui, we dont like to do business next to dead bodies.

The work around us is preventing us from getting customers into the restaurant.

We have found our trade dramatically reduced - its gone down by 50 per cent and the council said it was going to help us with signage but one week in and that hasnt happened.

It means our business is really going to struggle over the coming months, I feel really sad. I worry we cant survive - we are a family run business which has been here for 50 years.

Steven Lunt, deputy manager at the neighbouring Miller & Carter Steakhouse, said they had suffered their worst week of trade since they opened in May.

He added: Its blocking us off and affecting trade. People see our restaurant as a special venue for anniversaries and birthdays.
