Sweden football fans themselves demolish stadium
Organised chaos has descended on Stockholm #39;s now defunct Rasunda Stadium as fans were given the opportunity to help themselves to a souvenir before the venue is demolished. An estimated 5000 people armed with screwdrivers, drills, and hammers turned up to claim a part of the old stadium that hosted the 1958 world cup final in which Brazil beat Sweden 5-2. Football fan Oskar: "Lots of memories. I was here when AIK, my team, played in the Champions League in the late 90s. And just last Thursday when they met Napoli here was -- great moments." Among the mementos to disappear on Sunday were seats, fences and even patches of grass. The stadium, which opened in 1937 and was home to the Swedish national team and Stockholm #39;s AIK, is being demolished with matches moving to the new nearby Friends Arena. Swedish Football Association official Sune Hellstromer: "It, I mean, it #39;s natural to, to have it like this because this is also part of football. This is really the soul of football you can feel inside here today with all the supporters and all the people with all their memories from this stadium and then of course we must have this kind of day. So I think it was really natural for us to have it like this." The stadium was the first to host both the men #39;s and women #39;s world cup finals, in 1958 and 1995 respectively and the site will now be used mostly for new apartments and offices.From:JewishNewsOneViews:179 3ratingsTime:01:42More inNews Politics
