WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) Volunteers have installed fences in the Misquamicut (mis-KWAH'-mih-kut) beach section of Westerly to help curb the kind of erosion that swept away much of the beach during Superstorm Sandy.

WPRI-TV (http://bit.ly/15VUq2q ) reports that the volunteer group Serve Rhode Island worked Sunday to install snow fencing. Resident Jim Kirker says that when the sand is blown against the fencing, it will accumulate rather than being swept off the beach.

Thats what happened last year when dunes were blown off the beach by Superstorm Sandy. The area was devastated by the storm, and many businesses were filled with sand from the beach.

Residents have also planted beach grass to help keep the sand in place.
