BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -

The man accused of scamming innocent homeowners out of tens of thousands of dollars in paving work was caught by police.

Police have been tracking the accused scammer, Brian Curylo, for more than one year, and he is now facing some stuff penalties.

Curylo owes at least $30,000 in fines to the state, and was an hour late on Monday to face a judge.

Police said Curylo and his Hot Top Paving company are well known throughout Bristol and beyond after he reportedly scammed the elderly.

Harold Thorne lives on Geary Avenue in Bristol and said he could have almost been Curylo's next victim recently.

"I just stopped them before they got here, I said, whatever you're selling, I don't want it'," Thorne said.

After the state's Consumer Protection Department investigated multiple complaints, Curylo's license was taken away, so police said he allegedly resorted to going door-to-door trying to bring in more business.

He was arrested on Geary Avenue while he was working on the cracks in the driveway that belonged to a 92-year-old woman.

"I thought he was legitimate, honestly, trying to make a little money but it turns out he wasn't," Thorne added.
