ORLANDO, Fla.

The demolition company in charge of taking down the round building in downtown Orlando has notified the city that it cannot finish the work, Channel 9 learned Tuesday.

Crusader Demolition, which landed the $736,000 job, has been criticized for issues and delays related to the project, which was meant to make way for the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The project was supposed to be finished by November's opening of DPAC, but the large pile of debris off Orange Avenue remains.

The city sent a letter to Crusader Contracting, saying the company failed to perform and meet the project schedule over the last six months and that the company is in default, saying Crusader recently removed its equipment from the worksite.

The city is giving the demolition company seven days to provide a schedule and plan on how it would complete the work. If there's no plan to finish the project within seven days, the city said it will terminate the company's contract.

Part of the contract required Crusader Demolition to have a performance bond with a third party company. If the contract is terminated, the bond company will take over what remains of the project and select a new contractor to complete the work.

City officials said the ordeal will not result in any additional costs.
