Demolition of the old Princeton hospital started Monday morning, the first step in an estimated six-month-long project to clear the site for a residential development.

The town has said that it would keep a close eye on the demolition to safeguard the public health. Municipal engineer Robert V. Kiser said Monday that air and noise monitors are in place. Also, misting is being used to control the spread of dust.

Work began on taking down a one-story building around 9:30 a.m., he said. Six buildings are on site.

Developer AvalonBay is having its demolition subcontractor, Yanuzzi Wrecking & Recycling Corp., clear the property so that Avalon can build a 280-unit residential development. Avalon bought the land from Princeton HealthCare System, which had operated a hospital there for decades.

Anyone with a noise or other complaint about the demolition can call the engineering department at 921-7077.
