Kyle Field renovation means demolition of coliseum

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Demolition has begun on a nearly 60-year-old coliseum at Texas A&M University as part of $450 million redevelopment of Kyle Field.

Crews on Monday began tearing down G. Rollie White Coliseum in College Station. A website for demolition progress shows most of 1 side of the coliseum was down by Tuesday.

The gymnasium formerly was home to athletic events, graduations, concerts and the A&M Letterman's Association, which has relocated.

A&M facilities official Russ Wallace says demolition should be completed by mid-September. Wallace says construction will be suspended on Thursdays or Fridays before home football games at Kyle Field.

Regents this spring approved the redevelopment plan to make Kyle Field the largest stadium in the Southeastern Conference - expanding from nearly 83,000 seats to capacity of 102,500.
