The Puducherry Planning Authority (PPA) has temporarily stopped the demolition of the multistorey residential structure at Dhanaraj Udayar Street on a stay granted by the Madras High Court.

The PPA had started demolition of the third and fourth floors of the apartment on Sunday after the owner failed to respond to the notice served by the PPA.

But the builder approached the Madras High Court which granted a stay on PPAs proceedings.

A division bench of the High Court stayed the demolition of the structure till Tuesday.

A top official said the Puducherry government would present full details of the action taken, status of the structure and take steps to get the stay vacated on Tuesday to resume the demolition work.

Attempt to gherao

Meanwhile, residents of houses located adjacent to the multistorey structure attempted to gherao PPA Chairman K.S.P. Ramesh protesting against suspension of demolition of the structure.

PPA authorities assured them that efforts would be taken to vacate the stay on Tuesday following which they withdrew their protest.

Sources in PPA said that the government had made arrangements to accommodate over 13 families in hotels till the process was completed.
