A petition calling for a stop to the proposed demolition of Ebenezer Chapel in Old Market, one of Bristol's most historic buildings, has been launched by residents and campaigners.

The petition is online and can be found here

The chapel, built in 1849 and the city's first Primitive Methodist chapel, is planned to be pulled down in the next two to three weeks.

Heritage campaigners have joined forces with residents in Old Market to launch a petition to raise public support for a stay of execution, allowing talks to take place with the landowner and Bristol City Council.

The group says the former Methodist Chapel is a key part of the area's history and heritage, as well as the gateway to the popular Bristol to Bath cycle path.

They want time to put forward new plans that save the building by incorporating it into any new development proposed for the site.

"Notwithstanding the wishes of local residents, the landowner wants to destroy this beautiful part of the history of Old Market," said Mariateresa Bucciante, a local resident and member of Bristol Civic Society.

"Bristol City Council says it is powerless to intervene and save this beautiful building - despite the thousands of pedestrians and cyclists which pass it each day.

"We are calling on the people of Bristol to support our campaign by signing our petition, which merely asks for the landowner reconsider his demolition plans. A new development on that site would be a good thing for the area, but it will be a far better development for the area if it incorporates the chapel as well."
