It may not be evident from the outside, but work to demolish the former Souderton Area High School has already begun.

As of now, we are pretty well completed with the first step, which is removal of asbestos, Tim Hendricks, of American Real Estate, said March 30.

Work to disconnect public utilities is also in process, he said.

Within 10 days to two weeks, physical demolition of the building should be under way, Hendricks said. Were looking at three months from start of demolition to completion.

Work has also begun to remove items such as lighting fixtures and light bulbs that must be removed before the demolition, he said.

Permission was given for the removal of sentimental items that had remained in the building, he said.

Items of value to be reused were previously removed, he said.

Whats left is of no consequential value, so that becomes part of the demolition trash, Hendricks said.

Souderton Borough Manager Mike Coll said he met March 18 with representatives of Trego Excavating, of Lionville, the company doing the excavation work.

The demolition area will be fenced off and there will be other requirements for the work, including that there be tire cleaning areas so trucks leaving the site do not track dirt out onto the roads, he said. Continued...
