NEW GLASGOW The demolition order was scheduled for Sept. 30, but Garretts by the Bridge is still standing.

JOHN BRANNEN THE NEWS

The sign Garretts by the Bridge has been removed from the building in downtown New Glasgow. Despite a demolition order scheduled for Sept. 30, New Glasgow Town council voted on Monday night to give a final extension to the demolition timeline until Oct. 24, when the building will come down.

The only part of the building removed so far is the iconic sign across the front of the building.

Thats sparked the ire of staff with the town of New Glasgow, which voted on Monday night to give a final extension to the demolition timeline until Oct. 24, when the building will come down.

I received a phone call from realtor representing Garretts who indicated that they were looking at the end of October for the demolition, said town CAO Lisa MacDonald. I said other arrangements would have to be sought because there are significant concerns around the stability of structure.

While the realtor indicated that the demolition contractor was unable to perform the task until the end of October, the towns solicitor went to the solicitor representing the property owner and indicated that the time line at the end of October was simply unacceptable.

New Glasgow council voted last May to give Eddie MacArthur until Sept. 1 to meet the requirements set by the fire inspector and town engineer or else the building would be demolished.

Throughout the discussion, town councillors stressed their concerns about the building, which has been deemed structurally unsafe as well as an eyesore
