The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation will launch a demolition drive with the help of the police from April 19 to clear encroachments over parking spaces in 385 commercial buildings in the twin cities.

Announcing this after a meeting of the assistant commissioners of 12 zones of the municipal corporation, Deputy Commissioner Rajendra Cholan and HDMC commissioner Noor Mansoor said that the process of issuing notices to the building owners had begun.

They will have 10 days time to act on their own and clear the encroachments over parking spaces. If they dont, the demolition drive will begin under the leadership of zonal assistant commissioners under police cover, Mr. Cholan said.

He said that as per a detailed survey conducted by the corporation officials, there were 1,338 buildings with a built up area of over 2,000 sq. ft, of which 953 had parking spaces as per building bylaws. However, in 385 buildings, the parking space had been encroached upon, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the demolition drive would be carried out in three phases beginning with the encroachments over parking spaces. The survey on identifying encroachments over corporation properties and revenue land has begun and it will be completed by month-end. We plan to start another demolition drive in May. In the third phase, encroachments over pavements will be removed, he said.

To a query, Mr. Noor Mansoor clarified that the corporation would levy penalty on building owners where the demolition drive would be carried out for clearing encroachments over parking spaces. They will have to cough up the penalty and we will recover it through property tax, he said.
