After spending close to two decades manning the DJ decks at some of Perth's hottest bars, clubs and music festivals, renowned Perth DJ Paul Malone has decided to hang up his headphones.

Despite building up a reputation as one of the city's most sought-after DJs, the music veteran told Access All Areas it was time for a change - but the decision didn't come lightly.

"It's something I've been thinking about a lot. It's a big adjustment but it's something I really want to do and it's also a test for myself," he said. "I want to try something different, so I'm going to head offshore and get a job up north hopefully."

While he will be putting his DJ skills to rest, Malone said he wasn't going to completely abandon the city's bar and club scene.

"I don't plan on leaving the industry," he said. "I'll probably come back to that in some sort of capacity, maybe something to do with a bar or operating my own bar, something like that.

"I've worked under enough great people over the last 20 years and I've been so embedded in the industry, so it would be a shame to waste that experience. I think if I can go up north for a bit and get some money behind me I can come back and review my options then."

Reflecting on his early beginnings, Malone said he just happened to fall into the DJ scene while working at a Broome pub.

"I was a glassie at a nightclub up there and the DJ went on holidays and, because I was showing some interest in the music, he said 'Look, do you want to look after it while I'm away', and then when he came back he didn't have a job," he said. "So then I got the whole gig and I did that for about two years."

As a regular favourite at Luxe Bar, Tiger Lils, The Breakwater and Connections, Malone has seen his fair share of music festivals and major Perth events having played at the Big Day Out, Good Vibrations and the Perth leg of the Red Bull Air Race.

And while he's collaborated with some music greats including the Black Eyed Peas, Michael Franti and Joey Negro, Malone said his career highlight was hosting an impromptu beach party at two in the morning at Port Beach several years ago.
