The Nova Scotia Home Builders Association is featuring a session on deck construction and safety.

In response to the recent deck collapse in Dartmouth that injured 15 people, the provinces Home Builders Association will hold five renovation sessions across Nova Scotia next month to educate people.

CEO Paul Pettipas told News 95.7 its important for owners to maintain their decks and carry out regular updates and repairs.

I think the difficult thing is comparing how they built them ten years ago with what were doing now, he explained.

Pettipas added what hes seeing in new construction now is decks that will work in the long term.

He said his understanding is that ten years ago, you could nail decks into the wall of a house.

Its the same as buying a car today and comparing it with one ten years ago, he said. What were saying is some of the onus has got to be on the owner.

Information sessions will be held in Truro, Wolfville, Bridgewater, Sydney and Halifax.

There will be fact sheets to take home to show homeowners what to look for to make sure their deck is safe, and experts to answer questions.

Topics discussed will include things like how to hire a contractor.
