Long before Facebook let out the word on which deck on Bow Street in Portsmouth would open when so that some lucky Jimmy Juice lover could get there first, the annual opening of The Decks has been a much anticipated event.

That series of outdoor seating areas attached to restaurants like Pocos, RiverHouse, Harpoon Willy's, the Oar House and Old Ferry Landing as well as the newer Martingale Wharf and Surf don't open all at once. Oh, no. They stretch it out over weeks until finally, all the outdoor seating areas are open for business by May 10. It's a rite of spring, but also the heralding of our wonderful summer season.

The Samuel Adams Launch Party takes place at Poco's Cantina Friday May 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. WHEB will be broadcasting live, Samuel Adams will have prize giveaways.

Hit the Decks, sure, but it's so much more than that. It means all of Portsmouth comes alive in ways no other season brings.

The Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce recognized of course, that when the Decks begin to open, the Portsmouth season revives. The chamber created and sponsored Hit the Decks, an annual event now in its third year. On Friday, May 10, more than 85 businesses celebrate the arrival of our season with special events, discounts and a celebration. The Samuel Adams Launch Party takes place at Poco's Cantina Friday May 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. WHEB will be broadcasting live, Samuel Adams will have prize giveaways.
