LAS VEGAS (AP) Officials cut the ribbon Tuesday on the South Beach-inspired Delano Las Vegas, the renamed and renovated property on the campus of Mandalay Bay that was previously known as THEhotel.

The 1,100-room, all-suite hotel underwent an $80 million makeover starting in April and was rebranded after the Delano (DEHL'-uh-no) hotel in South Beach, Florida.

New touches include airy, white furnishings in the bedrooms and desert design elements in the public spaces instead of the dark marble of the past. A massive, 126,000-pound boulder culled from southern Nevada was split in two and forms a loose passageway into the hotel from the valet area.

New restaurants at the Delano include the Franklin lounge, which will feature craft cocktails and DJs at night, Della's Kitchen for breakfast and lunch, and the 3940 Coffee + Tea bar with a menu that evolves from juice and pastries in the morning to afternoon tea and snacks over the course of the day.

Mix Lounge, which sits high on the tower and offers sweeping views of the city, remains unchanged for now but is expected to be redone in the coming months.

The hotel was open under its old name while the renovations took place.

The original Delano is believed to be named after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The brand is especially popular with customers from Latin America, Europe and the East Coast regions that parent company MGM Resorts International is eyeing for growth because those patrons stay longer and spend more than travelers closer to home.

With rooms starting at about $115 on a weeknight and rising to around $500 on busy weekends, Delano offers a mid-priced option on a campus that includes the mass-market Mandalay Bay and the sumptuous Four Seasons Hotel.

It seeks to give sophisticated travelers, especially conventioneers that make up a large portion of its business, a more personalized, boutique experience than they would have in a 4,000-room megaresort.
