Former Vice President Joe Biden put his foot squarely in his mouth during the debate last week when talking about energy policy.
Many pundits thought Biden would make that kind of gaffe in the first debate but President Donald Trumps frequent interruptions ensured that would not happen. However, during the second and final presidential debate, Biden made a mistake when he declared that America needed to transition from oil and gas to green energy.
The energy (fossil fuel) industry is one of the largest in our country according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. In 2019, 81 percent of our energy consumption was tied to petroleum, natural gas and coal, leading to 1,122,764 jobs and generating $181 billion in total revenue.
Furthermore, for the first time since 1957, America produced more energy than we consumed last year. Interestingly, while energy production grew by 5.7 percent in 2019, energy consumption actually decreased by 0.9 percent. While natural gas continues to top energy production, followed by crude oil, coal, nuclear power and natural gas plant liquids in descending order for a total of 89 percent of production sources, the other 11 percent is comprised of biomass, wind, hydropower and other sources, including solar.
It is more than fair to assume that any so-called transformation from fossil fuel to green energy would have major disruptive consequences for our national economy. Luckily, we have a state that has been experimenting with this transformation for some time now in California, where rolling blackouts are a common experience because reliance on green energy is intermittent and isnt capable of matching demand to supply in an efficient manner.
Between 2011 and 2017, Californias electricity prices rose five times faster than they did nationally, Environmental Progress noted. Today, Californians pay 60 percent more, on average, than the rest of the nation, for residential, commercial and industrial electricity. This is not a model that the rest of the country should follow.
This is Californication with few concepts from the Golden State worthy of replication. Not only are electricity costs in California over the top, gasoline prices are also the highest in the nation. This is because the California Progressives continue to push the absurd principles of carbon neutrality which includes high gasoline taxes, higher than national standards requirement for gas mileage and, just recently, the outlawing of gasoline vehicles by 2035!
What Californians are now experiencing is what the rest of our country will endure if we allow Far Left politicians to implement the New Green Deal (NGD) advocated by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, and U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.
What I did not know until recently is that the NGD is not just about mitigating climate change, it is also about economic inequality. Forgetting economic inequality a moment, combating climate change is wishful dreaming because Communist China, India and Russia, all of which still rely on extensive use of coal-fired plants, still spew out toxic chemicals and haze which cannot simply be limited to within their national borders. As volcanic eruptions can show, the wind does not respect national boundaries. The unilaterally expensive remediation called for by AOC, the Bernie Bros and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to be imposed on American industry will never guarantee carbon decline in our air or a substantial difference in climate change.
Even an international treaty the Paris Accord which thankfully Trump withdrew the U.S. from, was unenforceable and had loopholes large enough for a wind turbine to slip through. Had America tried to live up to the Paris Accord, industries across the nation would be hindered with expensive regulatory costs which would make the U.S. uncompetitive.
Clean energy is not really clean though it is, admittedly, cleaner. To manufacture wind turbine blades, toxic chemicals must be used and then carefully disposed of since they are, at this time, still extremely hard to recycle. A turbine tower on average is around 280 feet high (about the same height as a 28-story building). These towers are noisy, ugly and kill somewhere between 328,000 to 573,000 birds indiscriminately every year.
Solar has its own unique set of problems including the currently high initial costs (solar panels, inverter, batteries, wiring and installation); being weather-dependent; solar energy storage being so expensive that some experts say it makes more sense to use it during the day and switching back to fossil fuels during the night; the amount of acreage needed for a solar farm; pollution from the transportation and installation of the panels; and, just like wind turbines, the manufacture of photovoltaic systems requires toxic materials and hazardous gasses.
Meanwhile, fracking has become an anchor around Bidens neck since he does not seem to know whether he is for it or against it. But, his running mate, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., was an early co-sponsor of banning fracking in the U.S. Senate. With avid support from AOC and a host of others, the future of fracking is in doubt if Biden gets elected. Though fracking has been around since 1947, as recently as 2015, there were around 300,000 hydraulically fractured wells. Today, there are more than 1.7 million wells producing more than 7 million barrels of oil and 600 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Fracking also directly employs around 636,000 people.
Without petroleum, we would all be screwed as more than 144 everyday products are made from its derivatives, including tires, boats, antiseptics, shoes, deodorant, paint, shampoo, aspirin, eyeglasses and detergents, to name just a few.
America can not afford to be Californicated energy-wise and the NGD would only exacerbate energy costs and issues. Americans expect to be able to walk into any room, flip a switch and have the lights come on. Neither industry nor consumers will be satisfied to pay higher energy costs offset with less dependability and sustainability. Furthermore, our national security is dependent on fossil fuels since the U.S. military is the largest consumer of energy.
Transforming from fossil fuels to green energy and a ban on fracking will lead to the Californication of America. Think twice before you vote for Joe Biden.

Founded in 2015, Tel Aviv-based TechSee has made its mark during the Covid-19 pandemic by enabling technicians from companies such as Vodafone and Verizon to turn up customers' services remotely without entering their homes. TechSee is also used by contact centers to reduce the number of calls and improve the productivity of support agents
TechSee had driven its solutions into the realm of augmented reality and artificial intelligence (AI) to help solve issues remotely and quickly. Unlike some remote virtual assistants, TechSee doesnt require the customer to download an application to their smartphone or tablet.
TechSees AI platform can automatically identify components, ports, cables, LED indicators, and more to detect issues and suggest resolutions for consumers, contact center agents, and field technicians. TechSee is a cloud-based solution that runs on Amazon Web Services. Since there are no downloads or sign-ins, the service can be up and running in days.
With TechSee, a telco customer agent can send an SMS to the broadband subscriber that is experiencing a broadband issue. The subscribers click on the link that turns on their smartphone cameras to show the agent a broadband router our set-top box. TechSee supports Android and IoS devices, and also works on tablets.
Currently, there are more than 50 companies, including Logmein, Teamviewer, and Help Lightning, that provide remote visual support for installations, but they don't use computer vision AI.
In addition to keeping techs and customers safe during the shelter-at-home mandates from Covid-19, TechSee can also reduce costly truck rolls for operators by solving installation or service issues remotely.
"TechSees technology reflects a material leap forward in delivering great experiences and support to consumers," said Rich Osborn, managing partner, Telus Ventures. "Covid-19 has also accelerated the path to adoption through very clear use cases, and the transition from traditional means of servicing customers is primed for an evolution. The majority of consumers have powerful mobile computing devices that can enable a wide variety of virtual and augmented reality applicationsfrom solving simple technical issues or unboxing and installing new devices, to activating and bringing user guides into real life.
"Telus Ventures was impressed with TechSees strong traction in enabling telecommunications client service through unique and differentiated technology, and its ability to innovate and deliver new capabilities during the COVID-19 crises."
TechSee's roadmap
TechSee's use of AI and augmented reality, along with the new funding round, is opening doors into new use cases and products. Autonomous assistance for technicians will allow telecom and cable technicians in the field to point their smartphone or tablet at a device, its components, wiring, LEDs, ports and cables to get troubleshooting guidance. It will also include auto-job verification such as providing feedback if the fibers are configured incorrectly.
TechSee is also working on visual self-service, which will allow consumers to self-install and troubleshoot issues in self-servicesuch as router installationby pointing their smartphone camera at the device. Currently, the TechSee technology still requires an agent on the other end to speak with the customer to identify issues and troubleshoot.
With automated visual self-service, no agent will be needed because the computer vision AI can work with the customer directly to pinpoint problems and identify solutions. It can also diagram solutions using an AR overlay right on the consumer's tablet or phone screen. It's also fully automated, which means businesses can save time, money and resources by deflecting callers to the self-service portal.
TechSee, which currently has 60 employees, but expects to have 100 by year's end, has also seen some additional use cases crop up this year. One new use case includes "bill and invoice explanation" where an agent can visually guide customers through their bill or total automated self-service. TechSee's computer vision AI can identify the components and line items of a bill and help explain them to the customer.
App navigation has also proved to be an interesting use case for TechSee. Some telecom customers are finding TechSee's solution valuable when it comes to learning how to use their provider's mobile applications.
TechSee is also seeing its customers use its technology for on-site support when a technician is having difficulty solving a problem. In that use case, technicians contact an expert, such as an engineer, back at the office to help them fix problems without having to dispatch to the site.
"We believe there is significant potential to expand TechSees relationship with telcos globally by growing its offerings with existing customers and continuing to deliver value-added services to become a leading visual assistance company that can enable organizations like Telus to enhance its customer service and support," said Osborn.

Wiring Installation | Comments Off on Vertical Gear Motor Market to Flourish with an Impressive CAGR During 2018 to 2027 – Eurowire
Gigabit services often bypass MDUs and home clusters because of the construction disruption and high cost of bringing fiber to each housing unit.
The broadband industry has been serving recently built, larger multiple dwelling units (MDUs) and multiple tenant units (MTUs) with in-building fiber infrastructure. When providing services in older buildings, operators increasingly turn to G.hn instead of deploying fiber because a fiber-centric strategy requires a massive investment to pass every door and many subscriber sign-ups to achieve economies of scale.
According to the most recent MDU data available from the U.S. Census Bureau (for 2017), the number of small to medium MDUs (two to 19 doors) represents 16 percent of the total number of housing units compared with barely 8 percent for larger units. Ninety-five percent of these units were built more than 15 years ago, which further complicates deploying fiber inside these buildings.
Given the age and construction types of MDUs with fewer than 20 doors, the deployment challenges are quite different. The first challenge is density. Given the small number of doors, the solution needs to scale from a very low number of subscribers. This prevents the use of high-density devices and makes the business case for GPON extremely difficult.
The second challenge is that there is no wiring closet in the building. The solution needs to be installed outdoors, near the telephone pair demarcation point or where the coaxial taps are reachable. This is typically on the outside of the MDU or near the curb, where the fiber feed terminates. A fixed wireless radio also can bring the gigabit signal to these buildings.
The solution needs to be deployed outdoors, which means it must be hardened in conformance with the IP67 standard to ensure that it resists water and dust, and should not require a local power source (local power sources are complex and costly). The third challenge is therefore the ability to power the G.hn access multiplexer (GAM) from the subscribers. This is known as reverse power feeding (RPF).
The fourth challenge relates to the complexity of entering the premises for installation or service calls. It is important to enable subscribers to self-install equipment in their apartments with no need for assistance.
Serving small and medium-sized housing units from the outside in takes into account that the telephone pairs or the coax taps are accessible only from the outside of a building or from the curb, where there is no local power.
Positron introduced the GAM-8-MRX (eight-ports copper) and the GAM-4-CRX (four-ports coax with each port serving up to 16 subscribers) with RPF support specifically to serve gigabit to housing units with fewer than 20 doors. Installing these GAM devices does not require entering a building and eliminates construction work and the resulting disruption. RPF support eliminates the need for an outdoor power source and allows GAM devices to be installed where the fiber or fixed wireless access terminates, be it a manhole, rooftop or utility pole.
Because subscribers can self-install, a technicians work is a lot simpler and truck rolls can be reduced to the initial installation trip. These cost savings result in stronger business cases, where even an initial low subscriber take rate delivers a positive return in no time.
Reverse power feeding (RPF) is a technology standardized by ETSI and the Broadband Forum. It allows sending power from customer premises to a GAM. RPF is a critical technology for powering outdoor GAM and reduces installation costs by removing the need to connect to power and monitor power consumption with a meter.
Garden-style homes are notoriously challenging to serve cost effectively. Homeowners associations resist the deployment of fiber because of the impact on existing infrastructure and landscape.
An interesting characteristic of G.hn ports is that they can operate either as domain masters (usually GAM devices) or endpoints (terminating the G.hn link and converting to Gigabit Ethernet). Positrons outdoor GAM devices support a unique daisy-chain capability in which the first GAM device connects to a fiber or fixed wireless multi-gigabit feed and then creates a distribution downlink to the next GAM device using two G.hn ports. The next GAM in the chain then serves an average of four homes on the existing telephone pairs and uses the remaining two G.hn ports to feed another downstream GAM.
A typical installation will see the chain of GAM deployed at each copper pedestal (serving a small number of homes) located every 300 to 500 feet to extend gigabit services over several thousand feet.
This approach eliminates disruption from the deployment of fiber while ensuring performances on par with a GPON feed with a 1:32 splitter architecture.
The Positron GAM is a fiber-to-the-distribution-point (FTTdp) solution and comes with multiple 10 gigabit SFP+ interfaces to support any type of fiber or PON standards (using an ONT as required).
The GAM hardware enforces per-subscriber bandwidth profiles and always guarantees a fair and balanced use of the backhaul link to include value-added services such as IPTV, video streaming, online gaming and telephony. Its extensive support for VLAN (including Q-in-Q) allows for seamless integration with the operator xPON services and the OSS and BSS functions already in place.
The GAM family includes 12- and 24-port indoor units and the newly introduced four- and eight-port outdoor units with RPF support. All of these units are offered with copper (telephone pairs) and coaxial configurations to match the available in-building wiring or cabling.
G.hn is an access technology for operators looking to simplify their access network with an Ethernet-like technology. With G.hn, operators deliver advanced services, such as gigabit high-speed residential internet and 4K IPTV without the high capital and operational expenses associated with a fiber retrofit. Each G.hn subscriber port supports up to 1.7 Gbps of dynamically allocated bandwidth for near-symmetrical gigabit services.
Positrons GAM connects to and extends multi-gigabit feeds from fiber (xPON) or fixed wireless access radios. It serves all residential gateways with gigabit Ethernet router ports using G.hn. In addition to delivering residential high-speed internet, Positrons GAM solution is compliant with MEF CE 2.0 and is suited to deliver business Ethernet services in an MTU deployment.
The ITU-T G.9960 G.hn Wave-2 standard leverages the existing telephone wiring (UTP, CAT-3 or CAT 5/5e) or RG-6/RG-59 coax cabling (each coax port serves up to 16 subscribers) to deliver a gigabit internet service to each unit inside an MDU or MTU without the cost, complexity and delays associated with in-building fiber installation.
Delivering gigabit services to small and medium MDUs and home clusters has its challenges. It is time to reconsider the strategy and the underlying technologies and distribution mediums to achieve a solid business case and a positive return on investment with the fastest time to revenue. With the outdoor Positron GAM and support for RPF, a provider can use the following approach to address the four challenges identified earlier:
Overall, a provider can deliver a better quality of experience to subscribers. With G.hn, providers meet the demand for more bandwidth flexibility with dynamic bandwidth allocation in the upstream and downstream directions to satisfy the needs of the high-speed internet connections now used for working remotely, remote learning and overall entertainment.

An entire floor of NGV International will be dedicated to works in illumination, juxtaposed against the historical collection, literally showing them in a new light.

And a big shiny Venus, by controversial, world-famous sculptor Jeff Koons, will sit immodestly among it all, the decoration on a gigantic art cake.
The Triennial has immodest ambition: to "explore the pressing issues of our time and survey the world's foremost artists, designers and architects" in media ranging from ancient Indigenous practice to the cutting edge of technology.
New York artist Tabor Robak is at that cutting edge, and says it's a huge honour to be part of the Triennial. His Megafauna, an immersive installation of computer-generated animations that will surround the viewer in an entire gallery, is the biggest work he has ever made, in the biggest room in which he's ever had to work.

"It opened up possibilities," he says. Robak read up on Australia and was captivated by stories of megafauna, the exotic, huge, extinct animals that roamed our continent. He married that with ideas from robotics and artificial intelligence, to create a work he says is "both terrifying and exciting".
"It's easy to say technology will save us, or that it has our impending doom baked into it. I tend to take a middle road... [looking at] the urge to race towards this technological future, that comes with a lot of ethical and environmental cost."
Robak wanted to convey the potential of creating new lifeform on a "Godlike scale", playing with the design languages of the future from military weapons, healthcare and surveillance. "This will be a holy site, and these are deities."
His biggest disappointment is that, even though the exhibition runs until April 19, he may not get to see it. As with the vast majority of the artists, Robak has had to supervise the installation process remotely, placing his trust in the NGV team and an intricately detailed brief - down to the wiring standards - to make sure his vision isn't compromised.
Ellwood said Robak was one of the first artists the gallery commissioned to "plan something spectacular and he's pulled it off".
The pandemic shutdown, and the likelihood of continuing restrictions on public gatherings and venues, had affected the exhibition structure, Ellwood says, but it has "barely suffered".
Loading
Some works that were more about physical engagement or interactivity had to be modified from their original plan, but Ellwood says "they don't lose their power". His best bet is that, by December, government rules will have relaxed enough to allow plenty of visitors.
Gallery layout was tweaked so as to not overcrowd any particular area or encourage people into corners. They will closely monitor visitor numbers, and make more use of outdoor spaces. Most of the art was commissioned before the pandemic but those that tackle themes such as isolation, loneliness, and speculation about the future may have new resonance.
"I can't wait," Ellwood says.

Three years after its first steps into smart irrigation systems, Orbits B-hyve brand is back with its most advanced smart watering hardware yet. The new B-hyve XR is stuffed with features, so lets dive into it.
For starters, the hardwarea beefy device that weighs more than two poundsis designed for either indoor or outdoor installation, with no additional housing required. (That said, the device is clearly not fully waterproof, so Id advise giving it some level of protection if youre mounting the XR outside.)
A row of connectors beneath a removable panel supports up to eight valves (or 16 valves for the next model up, which costs an additional $30) and includes room for a rain or freeze sensor. Unique to the smart irrigation space, the XR includes no external power brick (which is one reason why its outdoor friendly); the transformer is instead built into the main housing. This also helps to explain its overall size and weight.
The Orbit B-hyve XR relies on the typical clips to secure your sprinkler systems wiring, but it takes quite a lot of force to shove the leads in (16-zone model shown here).
As with most smart watering systems, your valve leads attach via simple wire clips. (The previous B-hyve required wiring to be attached with tiny screws.) I initially tried inserting my leads into these clips and thought they were connected, only to find that when I ran a test watering run, nothing happened. After some trial and error, I found that the XR requires fairly long wiring leads, and those leads need to be inserted with a significant amount of force in order to hold. I ended up trimming and re-stripping my wiring to improve the connection, after which everything worked fine.
With the B-hyve XR powered up, youll quickly notice its most interesting feature: A panel of three tiny, color LCD screens built into the hexagonal design pattern on the housing. These micro-displays give you some basic information about your system, including the current weather and the time and date of your next scheduled run time. Strangely, the weather report only includes the overall condition (sunny, raining, etc.) but not the temperature, which would have been a bit more useful.
While its a monstrous hardware device, the B-hyve XR offers a number of new features you wont find on competing water controllers.
Once your hardware is configured, its time to use the B-hyve app to connect the system to Wi-Fi. Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks are supported, and I had no trouble bringing the XR online, after which I could begin configuring my watering zones. Like most modern sprinkler controllers, the B-hyve XR offers both manual and smart watering programs, the latter setting up what it thinks is an ideal watering schedule based on answers you provide about the size, condition, and composition of your lawn or garden.
You can set up to four separate watering programs, or let B-hyves smart watering system decide for you.
After telling the app about the soil, plant types, sprinkler heads, ground slope, and sun condition, my system suggested a somewhat strange smart watering schedule: two 18-minute soaks, one right after the other, running once every three days. I dont know if this is really the ideal way to water my plants, as I know a smaller amount of water every day tends to work best in my garden. The total amount of water being delivered over the course of a week, however, was just about right.
If you want to fine-tune things, B-hyve supports catch cups, wherein you physically measure the actual amount of water your system is putting out, and then use that information to tweak its programming. As well, if you have a Flume water-leak system installed, a new partnership with that company lets you use its data to measure exactly how much water each zone is using. If the numbers suddenly jump, thats a sign that theres a leak or break somewhere in your irrigation tubing. This feature is available now, but Orbit says it wont be fully implemented until the end of the year.
If you dont like B-hyves smart schedule, its easy to disable. The system includes four manual program schedules that you can customize, and all five of these schedules (including the smart schedule) can be turned on and off individually or all run simultaneously. If your municipality has watering restrictions, you can include this information as a sort of master override over all programs to prevent water from flowing during certain days or times.
If your water utility issues restrictions as to when you can irrigate, you can input that information into the B-hyve app.
The system includes configurable push notifications, but only for warnings and when watering is finished, not when it starts. Alexa and Google Home are both supported and fairly robustly, letting you use your voice to run on-demand watering programs, delay an upcoming schedule, and more.
B-hyves app is reasonably intuitive, but its biggest flaw is how it presents future and historical watering information. A daily calendar gives you a look at the watering schedule past and present, but it can only fit a few hours of a single day on the screen at a time, which means youll need to scroll up and down and do a lot of switching between days to get a good sense of whats going on. Theres also a watering history function deep in the settings menu, but this only shows you the last time that water was run, not a true history of watering events. If B-hyve overhauls the calendar to be more functional, itll go a long way toward enhancing its overall usability.
The B-hyve XR also includes onboard controls that let you do a lot of things by interacting with the hardware, sans app, but this is largely a missed opportunity: Theres only a single button on the front of the XR, and you use that to do everything, through combinations of short presses and long presses of that one button. Figuring this out isnt easy, so B-hyve includes an exhaustive cheat sheet on the inside of the flap that covers the wiring leads. But its written in tiny type, so youll need to remove it entirely to make any use of it. And frankly, all of this is really convoluted; its much easier to just use the app rather than futz with the button.
At $150 for an 8-zone unit, the B-hyve XR is a good value, if not quite an insanely great one. The product works well and the learning curve is less steep than with competing hardware; as such, its definitely worth serious consideration for just about any environmentespecially if you need a unit that you can mount outside.
