PITTSBURGH, PA Power management company Eaton today announced a contract to provide Victory Electric Cooperative Association with a Modular Integrated Transportable Substation (MITS). The factory-assembled solution will help the electric cooperative support safe, reliable and cost-effective power for residential, agricultural and business customers in Mullinville, Kansas. Eaton's engineering experts will provide complete turnkey support from substation design to assembly and delivery to enhance safety, provide a more aesthetically pleasing installation and increase operational predictability.
"This project will support reliable, cost-effective power for our members while enhancing the safety and security of the power transmission system," said Michael Clark, Manager of Purchasing at the Victory Electric Cooperative. "The compact, enclosed design of the Eaton solution will help reduce commissioning and installation costs and provides us with the flexibility to quickly relocate the entire substation to meet our members' evolving power requirements."
The integrated power assembly will help the utility expedite the construction of its new substation, dramatically reducing engineering time required for the project and avoiding construction and weather-related delays. The new MITS platform will be the second for Victory; the utility recently relocated its first MITS unit to support power needs for customers in Ingalls, Kansas.
"Victory is working with Eaton to support an adaptable infrastructure that provides safe, reliable, high-quality service," said John Gadbury, utility segment manager, Electrical Engineering Services and Systems Division, Eaton. "With world-class expertise and global manufacturing capabilities, Eaton is helping utilities manage complex, integrated solutions and turnkey projects."
The MITS platform incorporates a flexible, expandable and portable design in a compact footprint that is engineered to accommodate current and future power needs. The configuration engineered for Victory will include a pad-mounted transformer, as well as reclosers and voltage regulators to enhance power reliability.
The completely self-contained design will help Victory enhance personnel safety by using all dead front components. The MITS unit also incorporates tamperproof, locked enclosures to enhance security. Further, by utilizing shield-grounded medium voltage cable in a totally enclosed configuration, the solution is less susceptible to environmental, wildlife and other damage than equivalent open-air systems.
The highly compact MITS unit is engineered to fit on a traditional concrete pad, pylons, or crushed gravel base and meets evolving power requirements. The modular substation will help Victory reduce project costs because each unit is factory-assembled, wired and tested to minimize on-site labor, quality issues and time.

Telcom & Data, a leader in mass notification systems, is pleased to introduce the Ritron LoudMouth wireless paging system. The LoudMouth is perfect for any location where a hardwired paging system is impossible or too expensive to route wire. Additionally, the unit works great for situations where the application is temporary. The LoudMouth is designed for both commercial and industrial use. Numerous schools, office buildings, airports, warehouses, and factories are benefiting from the units wireless design.
The LoudMouth is feature-rich and designed for stress-free installation. The unit is an easy add-on for an existing radio system. The LoudMouth allows operators to use a portable 2-way radio, base station, or mobile radio to deliver messages from up to two miles away. The speaker delivers 95dB of audio output at 50 feet; messages are heard loud and clear even in noisy environments. Because the unit is wireless, installation is a breeze and set-up costs are significantly reduced.
One great application of the LoudMouth wireless paging system is delivering emergency safety instructions. Sirens wont get the job done when people are in a chaotic situation. Tom Carey, Director of Security and Campus Safety at Bates College, explains, Sirens signal emergency, but dont tell people what to do or not do. Thats when people flood security phone lines looking for clarification, which only makes the problem worse. Carey chose the LoudMouth for Bates College to deliver oral safety messages in emergency situations.
The LoudMouth wireless paging system is now available at Telcom & Data. For more information, visit Telcom & Datas website or call 1-800-335-0229.

For two decades, Scott Shorrow of Landscape Concepts Inc. has specialized in landscape transformations enhancing the outdoor beauty of homes and businesses throughout Frederick, Maryland.
Hardscaping has truly become an artform, says Shorrow. Its so much more than just laying brick and pavers. The entire process from specification to design takes a real artistic touch to get it right, with a look and feel that promotes livability, curb appeal and even better value in a competitive sales market.
As for lighting, that was another matter entirely. I dreaded lighting projects, explains Shorrow. The wiring was bulky. The line voltage was difficult to anticipate and it always seemed like the first light was brighter than the fifth and all the other ensuing bulbs. Plus, the time and effort involved just wasnt worth the return.
That was until Shorrow learned about i-lighting and the companys extensive line of exterior lighting products using the companys proprietary LED Lighting Simplified connection technology. As a result, he found that installations utilizing i-lighting kits take nearly half the time of traditional outdoor lighting systems, since users need to do little more than plug the system together to create customized deck, rail, stair, post, path, masonry and landscape solutions. Another benefit is that each LED installation only costs pennies a month to operate, which translates to customer energy savings and another valuable business selling point.
I immediately realized this was the answer to my lighting problems, continues Shorrow. It just seemed so easy to use. All you have to do is plug it together and install. There are no excessive set up times. The wiring is thinner and as a result easier to hide and the LED bulbs emit a warm, yellow glow. I was sold the moment I started playing with the individual kits.
Featuring Easy Plug connectors, each i-lighting Stair, Deck and Landscape Lighting kit can be installed separately or in conjunction through a series of connections that plug together using either end of the i-lighting extension cables. Furthermore, each i-lighting system includes a lifetime warranty for its LED bulbs that use approximately 80 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and are rated for 12-plus years of operation if used 24-hours-a-day/seven-days-a-week.
Most recently, the company also expanded its product line with the addition of iluma Under Cabinet and Rail Lighting. Each can be used both indoors and outdoors as well as operated independently or with any existing i-lighting Deck, Stair, Landscape Lighting Kit. Other i-lighting system benefits include a:
Over the past year, Ive used i-lighting products in more than 50 jobs, and I havent had a single challenge, adds Shorrow. I now show the lighting on the first day and customers almost immediately ask me to include it in their projects. Its such an easy upsell and its less expensive than the current low voltage lighting products in the marketplace.
In one case, a previous customer was so impressed with i-lighting that he instructed Shorrow to replace the homes existing landscape and masonry lighting with a complete system consisting of nearly 250 i-lighting masonry, path and uplights. Lighting installations are now not only a profitable, but pleasurable to perform, adds Shorrow. In addition, i-lighting couldnt be a better partner. They answer questions immediately and in many cases will even put together custom solutions for overnight delivery.

Gila Community College (GCC) has just put the finishing touches on the cosmetology building and hired an instructor.
In addition, the college plans to soon break ground on the installation of solar panels.
All thats needed for the new building and program to be fully operational is some electrical wiring, some paperwork from Missouri and the State Board of Cosmetology to give its blessing to the building.
We received the certificate of occupancy last week, said Senior Dean Stephen Cullen. Ron Carnahan and Daryl Meeks are wiring in the stations they should be done by Friday of this week.
Then the following week or the week after, depending on when the State Cosmetology Board can grace us with their presence, with the inspection, well be ready.
Cullen said instructor Laurel Heyholm, hails from Missouri where she worked as a state board inspector. She only has to finish her paperwork to get started.
She will have to transfer her license from Missouri to Arizona, said Cullen, She told me yesterday she feels she will have her paperwork in hand Friday or Monday.
All-in-all, Cullen said he and the Payson campus staff are pleased with the program.
As for the solar panels, Cullen said the new construction company, SunRenu, will pull crews from the San Carlos campus project.
As of right now, the schedule to mobilize the project is mid-October, said Cullen.

Drivers on phones, diesel on corners, changing road surfaces and that ever-present threat of dopey oncoming traffic motorcyclists have quite enough to worry about without having to stare constantly down at their speedometers. But with speed enforcement cranking up in many areas worldwide, there has never been a greater calling for a motorcycle heads-up display that can keep information in view without being a distraction. There are a bunch of different companies racing to get an integrated HUD helmet to the market, but there's only one company that has a working HUD solution out there, for sale, right now. Loz Blain spends some time with Britain's BikeHUD.
People have been talking about motorcycle heads-up displays for a long time. There's a bit of a race on between Skully, Reevu and Livemap to decide who gets the first integrated-HUD helmet to market, each group tackling the challenge from slightly different angles. Then there's Nuviz, which is building a stick-on jigger that fits to the chin piece of any helmet.
The integrated helmets all look very expensive up to US$2,000 (the projected price of the Livemap) and knowing helmets, they'll fit some heads better than others. And as fancy as all their Kickstarter project photoshopped efforts might look, none of them have got anything to the market yet.
British startup BikeHUD actually does have a product you can buy right now; a retro-fit device that will mount to just about any helmet, and it costs $485, or $549 when optioned up with the GPS navigation kit and speed camera warning system.
I've been playing with one for several weeks now, so let's have a look at how it works.
The BikeHUD system is a slightly invasive installation on your bike. The key bike-mounted components are the BikeHUD ECU itself, wired into your ignition circuit, and a handlebar-mounted GPS sensor that also acts as your four-button control interface.
BikeHUD reads your speed through its own GPS, takes an engine tacho reading off a sensor coiled around one of your spark plugs, and splices into the bike's wiring to get a hold of your indicator signals and neutral light.
The GPS sat-nav Wi-Fi dongle plugs in to a USB cable hanging off the main ECU, and splices into the BikeHUD wiring for power. It also comes with a USB socket you can use to charge your phone on the go.
As I have the electrical aptitude of a stoat that also has no electrical aptitude, I was assisted in the installation by 2012 British National Natural Beard, Styled Moustache champion Matthew Brown, who taught me several new swear words in the process.
At the helmet end, you get the "monocle," which fits into your lid on a flexible arm that's mounted to a bracket that BikeHUD builds custom for any lid. In the case of my Nolan N104, the bracket fits perfectly and is held solidly in place by one of my cheek pad press studs. It's easy to add or remove.

After years of planning and several months of site work, activity at McKees Solar Park is beginning to heat up now that the city has finished installing the 900-panel array for the 230-kilowatt solar farm off East Cleveland Avenue.
Once it goes live next month, McKees is expected to produce enough electricity to power approximately 26 to 36 homes, depending on the season, as well as reduce the citys peak power demand, lower the wholesale cost of power, generate solar renewable energy credits, bring locally-produced green energy to Newark electric users and reduce the citys carbon footprint.
Council initially approved the redevelopment of the 3.91-acre brownfield site known as McKees Park in 2012, after District 6 Councilman Stu Markham expressed interest in transforming the former municipal landfill-turned neglected park into a power source for the city.
I like the idea of being able to generate your own power, and solar seems to be the cleanest and easiest way to do it, Markham said. McKees Park, it was worth nothing to us.
Markham said the city had been collecting money though residents electric bills through Delmarva Powers Green Energy Program to pay for green energy projects, which he pushed to allocate toward creating the states first community solar park in Newark.
Public Works Director Tom Coleman said work to redevelop McKees Park began last summer and proved to be a difficult task.
The primary challenge is the brownfield itself, he said, adding that remnants of a former baseball field and basketball court in McKees Park were still intact when crews got to the site. It was still there when we started and had to be removed.
In order to minimize disturbance of the site, Coleman said, city officials met with a landfill consultant.
Workers installed a vapor barrier under the concrete slab foundation and above the stone base that functions as a lid and vents any harmful vapors through a vent pipe out above the roofline.
He said crews also dealt with drainage and settlement issues because the former park was built on top of the landfill and several months were dedicated to redesigning the panel racking system to allow for adjustments in case of future settlement.

LED lighting company, Solid Apollo LED, introduces the new more compact and value priced driverless 3528 LED Strip Light with three white color options. The driverless strip light can be ordered in lengths as short as 19 inches and as long as 165 continuous feet using just one plug. The 3528 driverless strip light is waterproof and comes ready to plug in straight out of the box and has a variety of accessories available to ensure a perfect fitting installation.
Currently do-it-yourselfers, architects and designers have limited options towards high quality long lasting driverless LED strip lights, either the cost is too high or excessive wiring is needed to complete the installation. One alternative is rope lights, but due to their low quality and inefficient non-directional light and limited configuration accessories, it can be hard to accurately aim the light in the correct direction, and even harder to create an installation that correctly fits. Low voltage light strip is also available, but extra wiring, splicing and installation time is required for repowering the strip to avoid voltage loss and light dimming.
Solid Apollo LED has created the new plug in driverless LED strip light with matching accessories to create an installation which correctly fits and accurately casts light in the correct direction. LED rope lights were great when they came out, but with the low quality, short lifespan and soon diminishing brightness, the LED rope light has a lot left to be desired stated Manuel Barquin, CEO of Solid Apollo LED, the new driverless 3528 strip light brings higher quality, more accurate directional light control and more color options to match a variety of projects.
Solid Apollo LEDs 3528 driverless LED strip light is perfect for long length runs requiring waterproof LED lights. Install under the railings of decks, outline pathways, tuck in soffits, wrap around gardens or use in faade lighting. The thinner more compact design is just 0.31 wide for fitting in even more tight spots and to more easily hide the strip so only the light from the strip is visible. Solid Apollo LED also has the accessories to make difficult installations easy, with connectors, brackets and repowering strips available to make bends, jumps and even through-wall installations simpler.
The 3528 is fully dimmable and uses high quality materials to ensure a long 20,000 hour lifespan. Three white colors are available, Pure White, Daylight White and Warm White to match the varied colors on a variety of projects. Look to the driverless 3528 LED Strip Light as the plug in long life solution for indoor and outdoor projects.
Another driverless option for outdoor projects is the iChroma 20W Wall Washer from Solid Apollo LED. The iChroma is perfect for washing vibrant colors on walls and wide surfaces, and comes with a built in controller with pre-loaded programs, or control the iChroma with a remote or in-wall controller.
