First upgraded Rafale jet delivered to French military - October 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAINT-CLOUD, France, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The French government has received the first of 10 Rafale F1 naval jets upgraded by Dassault Aviation for expanded mission capabilities.

Dassault said the remaining aircraft will be delivered to DGA, the French armaments procurement agency, by 2017.

Upgrading of the aircraft involved full disassembly and outfitting with new modular electronic computers, new cockpit screens, a change to electrical wiring, installation of an enhanced Spectra counter-measures system, changes to weapon store stations and changes to the RBE2 PESA radar.

"The operational advantage provided by the F3 standard results in a variety of new missions achievable after the upgrade," DGA said. "In addition to air defense, ground attack and in-flight refueling, F3 standard Rafale Marines are capable of anti-ship attack, reconnaissance, laser designation and autonomous illumination, and nuclear strike."

The contract for upgrade is worth about $301 million. Working on the program with Dassault Aviation are Service Industriel de l'Aronautique, the Ministry of Defense's aircraft workshops, Thales, MBDA and Sagem.

New York artist's fabric 'Rapunzel' flows down side of Missoula Mercantile - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As they walked the sidewalks of downtown Missoula on Friday, passers-by craned their necks to look around the corner of the Missoula Mercantile building.

Something was different: The normal brickwork was covered in a brightly colored patchwork of cloth that cascaded down the wall.

Lying on his stomach, Brandon Reintjes slowly fed the 45-foot-long stretch of fabric from the corner of the rooftop of the Mercantile until it pooled on the sidewalk below.

It kind of overwhelms the senses. It has the ability to just really interrupt your routine, said Reintjes, curator of art for the Montana Museum of Art and Culture at the University of Montana.

The piece, titled Rapunzel, is by New York artist and Missoula native Amanda Browder. While it was thin at the top, where Reintjes used metal wiring to secure it to anchor points, the installation widened toward its base.

After hanging the piece, Reintjes spent the rest of the afternoon at the base, handing out information about the opening of a broader exhibition of Browders work on the UM campus.

We cant leave it, people could pull on it or try to climb up Rapunzels hair, he said.

Rapunzel was up for only a few hours for First Friday before the MMAC took down the installation and carefully packed it away. Because they are made of fabric, Reintjes said, soft sculptures are fragile and cant be left outdoors for long periods of time.

Amanda generally shows them for short periods of time at her installations around the country, he said.

The exhibition at the MMAC, called End of the Infinite, will run from Oct. 16 to Jan. 10, 2015. On the first and last days of the installation, two of Browders large-scale pieces will be hung over the PAR-TV building on the UM campus, weather permitting.

McLaughlin Field Lighting Project Nears Completion - September 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wet weather has delayed the installation of lights at McLaughlin Field, but the project is expected to be finished soon.

Parks and Recreation Director Darren Dunkle said rains have caused the field to be soggy and soft and not ideal for the replacement of the field lights. Dunkle said conditions are improving and he hoped the new lights are fully installed soon.

They were delayed by some wet conditions out, but I talked to them (Monday) and they said they hoped to be completed by next week, Dunkle said.

MUSCO Lighting began the installation of the lights Aug. 27 and was expected to take just a few weeks to complete the job. Dunkle said he expected the project would be done in early September.

At Mondays meeting Dunkle told the city council the project was dealing with unplanned weather delays.

That area, especially on the northeast end where the bank comes down in both directions, holds water well, he said.

Dunkle said part of the contract said the contractor has to fix any damage done to the fields. With the grounds wet, the contractor and Dunkle decided it didnt make much sense to work in the fields and cause unnecessary damage.

MUSCO is removing the eight older wood poles at the field. The old setup was more than 25 years old and in need of a replacement.

The original plan was to replace the wiring and upgrade the lights, however, Dunkle discovered it would cost nearly the same amount of money to replace the whole system, poles included.

The eight old wooden poles will be removed and replaced with four new metal poles. Despite the reduction in poles, Dunkle said the light output should be better.

High Plains Cultural Center at Killdeer reaches final stages - September 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

KILLDEER, N.D. More than most, Dunn County has taken one for the team in the ongoing oil boom.

Life has changed in good ways and some not-so-good, with intense oil drilling and rigs and trucks proliferating out in the countryside.

In a few weeks, the county will get something back, when the long-awaited dream of an events center with room to gather, exercise and celebrate special occasions finally opens to the public.

The High Plains Cultural Center, along N.D. Highway 22, is a beehive of construction activity these days. And similar to a hive busiest when the honey is in the final stages work is just about done.

The structure has been in the works for nearly a decade, starting with the concept, the funding and finally, construction.

Ken Roshau, who was hired to be the director and schedule events, instead stepped into the role of construction coordinator, or project manager. There were too many workers on site and not enough answers to go around, at the time, he said.

On a quick walk-through, he stops to talk to the various contractors, who are wrapping up the wiring, painting and flooring installation.

He reminds each one of deadlines that need to be met for the next piece to come together the ceiling tiles installed before the floor is painted, and the gymnasium/banquet room cleared of construction materials so the floor can be snapped together, for example.

Its hard to imagine, but Roshau figured by the weekend, all that would be left would be the installation of the kitchen appliances.

At that pace, it wont be long and oil companies will be able to use the center for training meetings and engaged couples will be able schedule wedding receptions for up to 500 guests.

Compact Signal Conditioners facilitate configuration. - September 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

September 26, 2014 - Used for isolating, converting, filtering, or amplifying analog signals, 6.2 mm wide MINI Pro signal conditioners conserve space while accelerating installation. Configuration options include DIP switch, PC programmable, or Android app, and angled housing aids wiring access; terminations can be made in any order. Integrated test points allow loop testing without disconnecting circuit, FASTCON Pro terminal blocks are clearly visible, and each terminal is keyed to facilitate identification. Phoenix Contact P.O. Box 4100 Harrisburg, PA, 17111 0100 USA Press release date: September 23, 2014

Middletown, Pa. Phoenix Contacts new MINI Pro signal conditioners save space and make installation and configuration quick and easy for isolation, conversion, filtering or amplification of analog signals.

The compact signal conditioners measure just 6.2 mm wide, so they require up to 65 percent less space than traditional signal conditioner designs. Using less space in the control cabinet or panel can potentially reduce the overall cost of the design.

The MINI Pro signal conditioners have multiple configuration options, including DIP switch, PC programmable or an Android app. This makes it easy for engineers to configure the signal conditioners, even without printed data sheets.

The angled housing makes it easier to access the wiring, so that terminations can be made in any order. Integrated test points allow loop testing without disconnecting the circuit. The MINI Pros FASTCON Pro terminal blocks are clearly visible and easy to install. The user can easily and completely disconnect signal and supply circuits with just the twist of a screwdriver. Each terminal is also keyed, eliminating connection errors.

The T-bus power-bridging system can be used to supply power to multiple MINI Pro signal conditioners without the need for daisy-chain wiring. This speeds up installation and eliminates wiring errors. With a voltage range of 9.3 to 30 V DC and operating temperature range of -40 to +70 degrees Celsius, MINI Pro signal conditioners are suitable for nearly every industrial application.
